Had some wholemeal spelt spaghetti today. Don't know how long it had been languishing in the cupboard, but certainly well before we moved here. Anyway it was delicious with the king prawns, homemade pesto, peas and spinach. Not a low calorie meal, but I have a 900 burn. AF today.
Did some rowing today for my bonus exercise. And had a little nap.
Looking forward to singing tomorrow. Won't have to battle the wind and rain this week. It's just cold.
I'm preparing for my weekend guests by washing their bed linen etc. I might even iron it, for once in my life!
One thing I love about Burns Night is that the menu is decided for you! I'm going to have nibbles in the living room when they arrive of blinis with creme fraiche - half smoked salmon and half faux caviar. Then, at the table, the haggis, neeps, tatties, something green, and a whisky and cream sauce. Then I'm sure we will be too full for dessert so we will retire to the living room again for chocolate truffles and maybe a fruit nibble, like mango cubes on sticks. Or cherries, if I can find any.
I have a tartan table runner and napkins in the form of Scottish pound notes. The men will wear 'Wee Jimmy' tartan berets, with ginger hair attached. We do the whole thing with bagpipe music, reading the 'Address to a Haggis' and the stabbing of it with a big knife. We have five different kinds of single malt whisky.
I tried to write my memoir this morning, but only managed a few words. One thing I am steeling myself to do is look through my old diaries from when I was 13 or so. I have got to that point in my memoir and I want to quote the occasional entry. I am, quite frankly, nervous. It was a very difficult time of my life. This afternoon I got as far as getting the Memory Box out of my upstairs wardrobe. It is sitting there on the carpet.

I'm going to complain a little about my partner. She is temperature sensitive. I gave her a nice ChiliPAD and a wonderful electric blanket, but when she is sitting in her bed propping up her casted R leg & feels too cold, she uses her iPad to change the whole house's thermostat settings by 5 degrees. Geez. $$$

Thanks again ladies, good ideas on the deciphering hints.👍,
Today I reorganized my pen pal stuff. I weeded out there pals that aren't writing back. I realize life can get in the way of this hobby. It was just 3 that are in a holding pattern. I might drop them a line, or send them a Valentine next month. My active pen pals tally up to 15. I have 3 more that are new, still in the "Hi how are you" stage.
We have been picking up a LOT of branches around the house. One was as tall as my husband! He's been throwing them over our fence, there's a trail back there. No one uses it though.
I made pinto bean soup on Saturday, so I have been having a bowl for lunch the last couple of days.👍.
On Saturday I watched the documentary about Mr. Rogers and I just cried! Some times life gives you opportunities to cry, and this was one of those times.
My husband has been on a Dragnet series kick this week. "Dum, dee,dum DUM"..(music)....

This made me chuckle....not at you, at myself. I am the one that is ALWAYS cold. I have an electric blanket on the bed and one for my chair in the den. I have a space heater by my desk where I work in the office (I work from home). However, I am also the propane miser and won't make the house any warmer because propane is so flippin expensive! My hub laughs at me, he says you know, you can really turn the thermostat up a couple of degrees.....
Nope, not gonna happen. That propane costs too much.....I function fine wrapped in a blanket!

Hi everyone, my name is Kathy and I'm from Oregon. I'm a little late on getting the new year started but here goes. I've gained back all 50lbs that I lost in 2011 and would love to blame it on my Rheumatoid Arthritis being out of remission or turning 55 or being happy and in love but I honestly think what it comes down to is will power and maybe some of the above all mixed together. I just keep gaining it back. My new year I like to take a moment to reconnect with myself and get my life under control again. All I've done these first few weeks is gain another 5lbs. Today, January 20 I start again. Refreshed and thinking straight and ready to tackle my self esteem and take control of my body. Is anyone else struggling like me? Any positive input is appreciated.9

Heather: Looking at your old diaries from early teen years would be a challenge for many of us. I think it is a sign of strength & courage that you are willing and able to look at the past and include some of it in your memoir. It is a worthy and admirable effort. :flowerforyou:
Karen in VA: My yoga class meets in the morning 3 days a week. It is filled with people in the 50+ age group and a few younger people who seem to drift in and back out. It includes men and women. I love it and am healthier because of it. A younger group of people who come to the gym after work also take yoga classes from one of the morning teachers. I haven’t gone in the evening because it isn’t convenient for me. I think that having a yoga teacher is important for people who are just starting out. Manuals and books, no matter how many nice drawings and photos, do not give the personal support that a teacher offers. I also recommend finding out about the class you’re considering. Taking a "test lesson" to see if you’ve found a class where you will be comfortable is a good idea. You may find the perfect match right away or may wind up trying several different situations before you find a class that fits you. Sorry to hear that your partner is in a cast. I hope she heals well and quickly. Remind her to use her electric blanket so she can turn it up as high as she wants. In exchange, ask her to leave the house thermostat at its regular setting. (((HUGS))).
I’ve declared our sourdough starter experiment a huge success. We had brown rice sourdough waffles for breakfast today. YUM!!! The taste and texture were both excellent. We began using white rice flour to create a sourdough starter a couple of years ago when DH was diagnosed with wheat intolerance. The white rice sourdough was gritty, in my opinion. I like the brown rice flour version we just tried much better. I still have my original heirloom wheat-flour based sourdough. I’ve given starts of it to both of my adult children and a few friends. Brown rice flour sourdough waffles will be on our table regularly.

thermostat wars are real. I basically live in a hot house, visitors will actually strip down —not kidding. My DH has very poor circulation and starts to turn on the heat in October at the first inkling he feels chilly. And yes, he can and does control the thermostat remotely! KarenVA I can relate!!!
NYKAREN5 -
Staying warm in a cool house is a lot easier than getting cool in a warm house. We keep our thermostat at 68
or 69 degrees and I wear lots of extra layers of clothing to stay warm. If I am extremely chilly, I add one or two knitted hats and possibly wool fingerless gloves. I am up and down too much for a blanket to work for me. At night we turn the thermostat down much lower and I sleep under 3 or 4 blankets.
The snow is gone but the ground and surfaces are too wet for using the leaf blower for cleanup. I do a bit each time I bring the dogs back from the walk using a rake and a broom and expect I'll get things cleaned up eventually.
Kathy from Oregon. I've found that will power isn't useful. I've read a lot about acquiring and keeping good habits (books by James Clear and Gretchen Rubin) and continue to look for good strategies to make my life better.

I'm home and in bed.had a meeting with Dr P and then he had a meeting with the 3 of us..Mary I could tell was getting her hackles up because he mentioned staying on task and no chit chatting.. and that we need to work together.. I talked with him earlier and told him what a nightmare friday was.. and he asked what Mary was doing and I answered him honestly saying I was to busy to notice what she was doing.. Poor Zina her dad not doing well and they were going to intubate him this afternoon..so I ended up.assisting this afternoon..so Mary and Aimee had to do the insurance which is what I usually do..but she threw a dig in out of earshot of
Dr P saying well I'm doing YOUR work and mine.. and I told her I am doing Zinas work and we all need to rally around her and do our share.. she also made sure before I left to make sure to stay close dont take off anywhere in case we need you..
I cant wait for this vacation....8 -
Nice out today, cloudy with just a little rain. I was able to take horse poop down to the compost and filled up the cart with downed branches to bring back and dump in the fire pit. I have done mostly paperwork this morning, getting things together for taxes. This is going to be difficult this year with DH's death. Makes things more complicated but have a firm that does it just have to get them the papers.
DD and I keep our house on the cool side, 68 during the day and 62 at night. We both have blankets in our recliners for when we are watching TV or reading. I have an electric mattress pad on my bed.
Welcome to Kathy from OR.
everyone take care, Sue in WA4 -

Pip: Happy 2860!!!! 7.84 years is a fabulous accomplishment. Keep up the great job!
Kathy from Oregon: Welcome to a fellow Oregonian!!! You have found a welcoming and supportive group of women. What part of Oregon do you call home? I live in Columbia County. My best advice is to move more, measure all food portions, and count calories. Let MFP set your calorie goals for you starting where you are now. As you lose weight they will reduce your allowed calories. Stop by here regularly for support and encouragement.
Allie: Putting up with an obnoxious coworker is part of life. :ohwell: I hope your upcoming vacation is a delight. :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:
Yoga this morning was delightful. It set me up for a pleasant day and week.

Agree with Barbie. Habits are the key. Two people I follow regularly have both recommended Atomic Habits. I havent read it yet, but I’m going to try to get it on audiobooks from the library. I have to make a trip to Nashville next week - six hours in the car there and back would be the perfect time to listen to it.8
-
Dr.Katie: I second "Atomic Habits". I already knew or was practicing alot of it. However, I will share that my big takeaway was reframing the more difficult habits. Instead of saying "I have to hit the treadmill" to say "I GET to hit the treadmill". I've adopted this for everything about my life from care giving duties to cleaning the toilet. Great book, and I'm grateful it was available as an audiobook from my library.
Kathy from Oregon: Welcome!
Good day today. Got DH showered, which is never easy because he procrastinates for days and days (pretty normal behavior for dementia). He has had a couple recent episodes of incontinence while sleeping, and with very little prompting also got him to try an adult diaper. The VA provides them for free. Tomorrow we have side by side dental cleaning appointments. I know his dental hygienist will not be happy that he doesn't brush and floss as often as he should...oh well...
My scale is stuck. Now that birthday and anniversary are past, I foresee a full day fast coming up soon. Stay well friends. We can do this. We GET to do this.

Rori- JRs dentist said you can’t floss a 2yr olds mouth so water is your best friend! Brush best you can allow chewing the toothbrush y lots of water all day long .If it works for him it will work for anyone! JRs teeth are super white y his toothbrush super chewed up with lots of water all day long. I even know someone who gives their grandp the 360* sipper cup - cup with a stopper lid so still a cup but less spills! Can’t lay it on its side it’s still a cup but works great for them for night use. Just get creative. My Daughter grandma when she was alive with dementia I gave her sports bottles full of water the temp she liked. She drank more because of it.

Organizing my closet - bigger task than I thought regretting starting it but needs done.4 -
Heat in the house - I grew up in a very cold house and swore I would never be cold again. I keep the heat up in our house but last week when we had to keep it exceptionally high so our pipes wouldn’t freeze was even too warm for me.
On Saturday evening they ended our cold weather warnings. Today at lunch time it reached 0. What a nice day it was.
So much more to say but didn’t take notes.
Tomorrow I go get the post put in for my crown and a filling. I am not looking forward to it. Thankfully I have Atavan to take before I go. Hubby will drive me and pick me up.

My diaries from teen years are B-O-R-I-N-G!!
I've always been a data/numbers/lists person.
So from my first diary when I was about 10 years old, my entries read like:
Went to school.
Did language arts homework.
Start math homework.
Organised sock drawer.
Cycled for an hour.
By my late teens, I felt constricted by the tiny entry spots of children's diaries and migrated to appointment books and lists where I would write down everything I wanted to accomplish the next day in a list, and at the end of the day I'd check off what I did and write the rest onto the next day.
I recall that the summer between Grade 11 and Grade 12 I resolved to (and successfully did most of the time) read a portion of a book 5 days a week ... a chapter or for an hour or something. One day (let's say, Monday) I made my way through my mother's medical textbooks, the next day it was my father's accounting texts, the next day it was my French texts. I remember those three in particular ... I think a fourth was exercise books on running, cycling, weight lifting, etc. and I'm not sure, but the fifth might have been math. It seems to me I tried to wade into calculus without much luck. And I dutifully wrote down what I had read in my lists. Ah the summer when I was 17 ... I remember it well.
When computers came along, my lists were computerised which makes them less time consuming. I've got stuff to do in my calendars with notifications that pop up to remind me, and also a running list where, when I complete something, it goes to the bottom.
It seems to me that my mother saw what I was writing in my diary at some point early on and told me that I could write my personal thoughts and things there rather than just lists, but I was horrified. Why on earth would I want to commit my personal thoughts to paper for someone else to read?? So I don't think I ever did that.
Even when I tried to write fiction in classes in high school and some of my earlier post-secondary programs, instructors said my writing was somewhat detached and didn't show any emotion or feeling or anything. It was like I was writing an instruction manual.
I have since learned how to throw adjectives and adverbs into fiction to create a sense of feeling in order to get a decent mark in class.
And I have since learned that I really enjoy writing instruction manuals. And now I must get back to work ... I'm writing an instruction manual!!

Kathy in Oregon, welcome from an Oregonian displaced presently in Washington! I just can't think of my self as a Washingtonian! No offence to all the Washingtonians here! 💖
I grew up near Portland, ( actually Gresham) but married a sailor in 1983 so he took me all hell and gone! We are retired Navy and share a home with active duty son on Whidbey island. When son retires from Navy we might just move back to the coast by Astoria. I miss my sound of the ocean, its scent in the breeze. But it is nice to have access to a Navy base.
Awe don't be so hard on yourself. Life happens. The most important step you take is the first step. I mean, starting anything, is a mental mind shift toward the positive. 👍
We are a unique bunch, from every part of the globe. Many of us have been here since the beginning of time. Well for 7/8 years anyway.😂. The main rules are no political, no religion, oogles of grandbaby pics or pet pics, just keep us in your mental back pocket. Maybe "Rules" is too strong a word. Check in every so often. Whine and vent up the ying-yang. Does that pretty much cover it ladies?
Welcome again.👍

Machka: My diaries were pretty boring, too. I’m not a writer, but I wished to be one someday when I was a kid. I’ve always loved reading. Heather is a writer at heart and a published author. I read a book of hers a few years ago.
Kathy from Oregon: Welcome! I look forward to seeing your posts. What part of Oregon do you call home?
