WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JANUARY 2020

I read the white diary, the first one. I was 14.
Tomorrow I will read the red one.
I feel a strange mixture of compassion and astonishment. Still processing.
Singing today was magnificent. I can't believe we stumbled on this miracle.
Tomorrow we are picking Max and Edie up from school. The au pair is collecting Bea. My DDIL is delayed up in London doing something exciting. (Jealous, moi?) We will stay until we have to set off for French Circle. The lecture is about Cezanne. Don't know what we are doing for food.
Finding myself a little discombobulated.

Today I met a friend I connected with thru a Whidbey free site. I was cleaning out pantry of items got from other people donated boxes last week and she answered the posting. Again food travels well around here! She lives in Freeland, a city located on the southern tip of Whidbey. She dropped off teenagers at a Coupville school, then she came up to pick up the bags I had for her. It was nice meeting her, she is lacking in adult female companionship like me. When she came up to the door we had a nice chat. Next time I will actually let her in for a cuppa! First meetings, I got the feeling she was comfortable just standing outside, but we both conversed like we were old friends. I have a new friend. Yay!
Gym today was fierce! I attacked each machine doing 20 lbs each for 10 reps. I have been doing this weight for months now, its not getting easier, and it still challenges me, so I figure it must be doing some good. I do notice my shirts fit better, and I can wear my tighter bra, and though tight, it does support me better. More than my normal droopy @$$ bra. Haahaa!
After gym, we went to Haggens, a trendy supermarket. They have a great bakery, and its stew with bread for husband and son tonight. I will have something else. We went to the candy section of the store and husband wanted milk chocolate malt balls. I looked and while it all screamed "buy me", I didn't pick out any! I chose two tomatoes, for a great tomato, avocado, lettuce, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, and pickle sandwich sandwich! My husband is now whining about the fact that each darn tomato was $2. Ok, ok, I could've waited patiently and bought the tomatoes for $2 a lb at Safeway..
Last night I gave in to both husband and son's pleas for fluffy tapioca. It was dinner, all warm, in bowls like creamy sweet soup!
Then we watched the Grand Sumo Wrestling. Aren't we an odd bunch? The fact that I totally understand what's going on, have favorites, is probably odd too. Hakuho bowed out like the second day of the 15 day tournament. Now Enho, this small little Sumo wrestler is entertaining, as well as Tochinochin, a wrestler from Georgia, a country in Caucasus. Anywhoo, its a rousing time, and we nightly yell, and carry on.💖I

Okie hill country- I was on the chat with Homedepot when I purchased the Kohler toilet seat he said none with metal screws for the lids that he’s seen anymore. If it breaks again guess I’ll try someone else.

Tracey: When I was a kid my parents took me to a dentist who was neither gentle nor kind. When I went off to college I found my own dentist. It was a whole new world. My current dentist is nice, but expensive. :ohwell:
Allie: Your dad was one of the good guys. So was mine. :flowerforyou:
Heather: Reading those old diaries is probably a reasonable cause for discombobulation. Sending (((hugs))) your way.
I’ve spent my day donating food to the food bank and updating my sourdough recipes to include a brown rice flour recipe in addition to the original unbleached flour recipe. DH can't eat or digest gluten so we moved to rice flour. I threw out the white rice based starter because it was too gritty and acidic for my tummy. I've switched to brown rice flour for the sourdough we use in cooking because it is less acidic and tastes more like the original sourdough. We're both happier. I will always keep the original unbleached all-purpose flour starter in the big crock. The brown rice starter is now in its own crock. We both win.

Katla - Your sourdough starters sound amazing and great for both of you. I haven't kept my sourdough up since we moved. The artisan bread shops are everywhere in Hove, though expensive. But I only have to walk 100 yards for amazing bread. I can also get gluten free bread easily for friends who need it.
I used to make a very good 24 hr slow rise bread which was excellent and had that sourdough taste. I haven't made that recently either as I'm surrounded by sourdough. I might give it a go again as it was beloved by visitors.
When people visit they can't believe the number of bakeries. My favourite is Gail's which has every kind of expensive temptation. Their cheese straws are devil's work. You would definitely sell your soul.

I'm doing the military diet. I know. But, I'm doing it anyway. I'm not weighing myself. I'm walking at least forty minutes a day and I'm using resistance bands. My fitness pal tells me what I'll weigh in four or five weeks if I keep it up. I'm doing simple 300 calories meals. Not doing military diet perfectly but not all days are actually 800 calories. my clothes are loser. I'm going to keep it up and I'm going to grow vegetables in my aerogarden so I always have fresh. All I'm trying to do is get healthy and that means I'll lose weight but the scale drives me crazy and ours is broken anyway. So eating right and exercising daily is my new life style.8

I learned a long time ago that the best food plan is the one you can stick to. If this is working for you and you feel well and energetic for exercise, then it's a great choice. One of the great features of this thread is that no one criticizes anyone else's food plan.

Sounds good!
Except for that bit about finally completing my To Do list!! That would take a solid 9 months working 10-12 hours a day.
I'll try to focus on some of the other things instead.

Heather: I have had great success making sourdough pancakes and waffles, but the bread I tried to make was heavy as a big rock and much too chewy. Bread in general is a challenge in our house. I can eat commercial bread and be happy. DH has to eat gluten free bread. Some gluten free bread is okay and some is not as good –sort of like the sourdough bread I tried to make back when. :ohwell:
Machka: You’ve been a world traveler and loved it from what you’ve said. It seems like you’re currently trapped in a beautiful place. I wonder why you are restricted from travelling. If it is connected with your DH’s health situation, will travel opportunities improve as his health improves? I hope you will eventually be able to enjoy adventures of your choice again. :flowerforyou:
A longtime friend of ours will be here tomorrow with his wife. I’m looking forward to seeing them. They’re coming to get sourdough starter from us. I have a nice batch waiting for them in the refrigerator.

My husband's health is part of it, but a greater part of it is Workers Compensation law which insists that he is available for work in our state 24/7/365 even though he is unable to work. It's complicated and may not resolve for a long time.

Katla - my fear stems from a childhood dentist. I needed a tooth pulled and the dentist literally climbed on my lap to do it. I was young. He was the only dentist in the area. I was forced to go to him until I moved out. I didn’t see from age 17 to 23 when I had impacted wisdom teeth removed. They gave me a drug that knocked me out for that. I haven’t been back since until this past November. Fear and cost has been a great holdback.
Machka - WCB is great but such a long process for any serious injuries.
I survived the dentist, have two more appointments scheduled and then I think there will be two more after that to be scheduled. I am so grateful for the benefit plan I have now.
I thought I was getting the post in today, but that was not the case. They did the filling and took the impression for the crown. I’m not sure exactly what else they did. Tuesday I go for 2 more fillings.
I came home and had a long nap and now am feeling a bit hungry. I think I’ll have a bath and then decide what I can eat.

Yummy tried my new 60cal shake protein powder in my 30cal Unsweetened Almond milk 🥛 says you can put in water also.
It’s delicious in my opinion for first try. JR drank half through a straw!!! It’s his first straw attempt he actually drank from a straw!! He lived it. Clumsy but clumps are chocolaty . Said a blender solves that or strainer I used a straw same thing.
I’m so full from the macaroni was hoping to have the shake with some unsweetened apple pie 🥧 filling, but no room. Maybe after the macaroni gets used up.

I'll also add that his health is likely as good as it is going to get. The assumption is that at about the 2-year point after a severe traumatic brain injury, the person is not likely to make any further significant improvements. The assumption is also that people who have sustained a severe traumatic brain injury are likely to deteriorate sooner and faster as they age.
Severe traumatic brain injury is permanent ... and WC isn't set up for permanent injuries, unfortunately.

Went to the extremepump class today. The plan for tomorrow is to use the stairstepper
Amber – I seem to remember when Jess was here last, she made some pickles. I don’t remember her putting much (if any) salt in them. I remember her cutting up cukes and soaked them in vinegar. I don’t remember what all went into them. Try looking online and you might be able to find a recipe for salt-less (or low salt) pickles. I’ll be glad to help you with that bag of apples. As a matter of fact, I’ll probably get some later today to make more applesauce. I keep my flour in the freezer so that bugs don’t get into it. Maybe you can do the same with rice? Update: the applesauce was good, but I’m wondering how economical it is? Guess I’ll have to check prices next time I’m at the store
After exercise stopped at the Salvation Army (didn’t get anything) and then Aldi (only got a few things). Bowling in a few. Then mahjongg tonight. No ceramics as they’re closed
Annie – lol your exercise step!
Tuesday here: went on the stairstepper today. The plan for tomorrow is to do Jillian Michael’s Burn Fat Boost Metabolism DVD.
Karen VA – have you suggested to your partner she use the Chilipad? If so, what was her response?
Welcome, welcome, welcome everyone new!
In a way, I feel bad for the lady who owns the gym I went to today. My membership was $300. Now that I’m on Silver and Fit (going to be Silver Sneakers next time I enroll in Medicare) I am (I think) supposed to pay $50. I really only used it about once a month, so that’s probably all I’ll use it this year.
Katla – I hear ya about having a yoga teacher. We used to have one that was at a time that I could make it. It’s good to go occasionally even if you’re doing DVD’s because many times you think you’re doing something right but you really aren’t. Unfortunately, there aren’t any classes around here at a time that works for me.
Rebecca – you certainly covered everything this group does. I’d just add signing your post with your name and a way to identify you from others with the same name
Rummikub tonight. I’m crocheting a Christmas tree skirt right now and my count is off. So I’m going to go to Rummikub early tonight and a gal said she’d help me. I’m certain it has to be some real stupid thing that I’m doing. Like last time my count was off, it’s because I was thinking I was on one row when I was really on another Update: I was counting stitches and not spaces, so that's why it was off. I knew it was something dumb.
Love all the baby pictures! Boy, we sure to have a lot of cute babies (and older kids, too). What are we doing right?
Thermostats – interestingly, Vince and I don’t seem to have a hot/cold issue
Camping – what word was created to describe a luxurious style of camping? Glamping. That’s really a word
Tracey – when I was young, I had to get some teeth pulled in order to make room for my braces. The dentist (or whatever they’re called) put a mask over my face to put me to sleep. To this day, I still get anxious about a mask. Whenever I have any type of procedure, I always ask the anesthesiologist to be sure that I’m knocked out before he puts any type of mask over my face. That would really freak me out.

M Oz- They said the same about Dad.He did crossword puzzles (I remember him frustrated but got proud when he reached 6 answers out of a whole book of them, read the Bible start to finish, retook his college later on as his memory improved, etc he is still healing with 1/2 his brain is permanently shut down plus early onset of dementia. Took a lot of years to get up to those 6 crossword puzzle words done. He has retrained his only working half of his brain to do some of what the other side did.Sure pieces still die off on MRIs lost another speck to area but he has built himself up. Took forever to find a working epileptic seizure medicine that fully worked. He had to retrain himself with physical therapy then on his own when the care stopped just to hold a glass. He drives again to does stuff he used to not be able to do. Unsweetened Apple pie filling 7 servings in 1 $1.something can 30 cal each servings. Ate 1 serving was delicious 😋 treat. I’m not putting it in a pie instead eating it cold or heated on a pie plate as just 5 apples with its creamy cinnamon pie stuff not sweet tasting more like an crisp Apple with some filling jelly. Was wonderful think it be perfect on ice cream ,by itself, in a pastry 🥮, cottage cheese topping, etc. Sugarfree so yummy y healthy to keep diabetes away ! I recommend it Amber approved comes in cherry 🍒 too

Michele NC- yeah my cousin said his MIL makes salt free. I only know how to make salt pickles. Need to find out as soon as JRs not under foot buy me some more canning jars get to work on that. Someone told me you can buy salt free pickles in the store but so far haven’t found them.
Bag of apples 🍎 thinking of making fish cause I love apple slices with tilapia . Also a few Apple salads. Hubby taking a few to work. He tossed one in the yard said here raccoon 🦝.I went grabbed it not about to start feeding that beast! He can move on with his female companions before I have raccoon babies everywhere! I didn’t think about applesauce I got all the ingredients for that. Might consider it since applesauce can be used to bake even.

Good Tuesday night from Ohio,
I had lots of sunshine today! Sunshine plus Kylia equals happiness!
Not sure if it is my body healing, the medicines I am on, or the fact that I am drinking about 70 ounces of water a day, but my hunger is not there. I cheated tonight and put in 50 calories just so I could close diary. Smh. The upside is the scale is going down. 😎
When y'all were talking about squatting it reminded me of my grandmother. I remember her "squat walking" her entire yard in Birmingham picking up pecans before cuttung the yard. She amazed me! I am guessing she was around 53 as i was 8 or 9. She would challenge me to help. I couldnt do it for longer than a couple of minutes and couldn't "walk" like she did! 😄 Heck, I find I have to remember to bend my knees and squat down to pick something up. Normally I bend at waist with butt up in the air. So ladylike!
Thank you for the memory!
Welcome, Hugs, cheers to all!

Jiggled cord, nothing. Plugged into car and started to charge so phone ok, just the stupid, fragile, charging cord. Think I’m on my third one. Foo. Barbara Have you tried a lightning cable? My DD uses one and it appears to be indestructible.
Yesterday I delivered some food to a work colleague who is out recovering from herniated disc surgery. I dropped off some roast chicken and salad and cookies for her family of four. Only problem, I was hit with such envy for her gorgeous modern home in a beautiful rural neighborhood with an easy commute to work, ah well, that green eyed monster got a good grip on me for the rest of the day. It took a lot of self talk and redirection to bring myself back to being grateful for what I have. Eventually got over it when I rolled over last night in my warm, safe bed I really did feel grateful for what I have, it's more than enough.
So I'm cleared from one Physicians assistant to start the search for a neurologist to see what is going on with my finger/hand numbness. My bp was excellent even in the doctors office so that was good news, labs are checking my electrolytes, this will probably take a while. Will put on the big girl pants and take it one step at a time.

Good morning all! Happy Wednesday!
Heather- Sometimes I wish I had kept my childhood diaries. Long, long ago, in the days of "summer camp", one of my diaries got left behind at camp (under my bunk mattress); and was found by someone who gave it to a counselor, who broke the lock and decided to share the contents with the other staff members. One of my older brothers was the camp director at the time and rescued it and brought it home to me. I was 14 and mortified, because at age 14 most of the entries were about boys and how mean my parents were. Any way, never kept a diary after that point, and burned the ones I had for fear of them falling into the wrong hands. As an adult, I keep a couple of different journals. I have my daily gratitude journal, my "documents" diary where I write about the very inner feelings I have about things, and I have a journal that I write in about life, family, etc. that I don't really mind if someone picks it up and reads. Have fun with Max and Edie!
Amber- Your child's living room looks a LOT like mine! lol I love his little teepee! Always nice for kids to have a little nook to sit and "hide". I think mom's need one, too!
Kylia- It is funny that you have that memory of your grandmother squat-walking/ duck-walking around the yard. My mom did it as well, into her 50s; as she was a very active and hands on grandma playing with grandkids. That all stopped for her when she got cancer.
JanetR- Thank you for the kettle bell reminder! I am going to check around and see if any of my friends have one or two in their closets or basements collecting dust, that I can borrow.
It doesn't escape my attention that at 53 my mom was two years into the first of three battles with cancer. By age 58 she was gone. I am grateful, daily, that at 53, I may be overweight, but I am otherwise healthy and cancer free. (TBFTGOG moments)
I am keeping up with my daily exercise routine. 20 minutes of yoga, 30 minutes of strength/resistance, 30 minutes of elliptical. It has been working for me if I divide the time between a morning workout and an evening work out. 40 minutes each. So it breaks down as 10 minutes of yoga, 15 minutes of strength, 15 minutes of elliptical. This way, I can fit it in before kids arrive and then again right after kids leave (before I eat dinner). This combined with sticking closely to my calorie allowance (I have had a few slips here and there with treats), the weight it slowly coming off. I have been AF since January 1st! lol I think that has played alot into my being able to stick within my calorie allowance. Alcohol really loads on the calories.
It is Wednesday! I am not wishing time away, but I am always glad when the work week flies by (just wish the weekends would slow down)! Pancake day for the kiddos; I am having some left over pot roast for breakfast. The calories for that are about the same as my yogurt smoothies and I really want something warm this morning. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)
