Rori! I read that book! “ Manufactured “ was a real page turner had to return it to my relatives tho before I could finish it but every word was so strongly written!
I try to buy cruelty free meats, eggs,y even private farm sellers for goat cheese spreads etc. every chance I get! I used to shop at farmer markets to health food stores but the big city doesn’t have those sad to say. I even grow my own oranges 🍊. I get farm fresh foods from my MIL farm which she travels from her city house to the farm she grabs a bag or two here y there which means fresh pine nuts even!
Try Pandora’s Lunchbox it was a good read to me. Not sure what everyone else likes tho.
https://civileats.com/2013/02/26/new-book-reveals-everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-processed-foods/
I gave up pop tarts after reading 📖 the book. Was good point could you make it at home from scratch? NO. Which means you shouldn’t eat it Kellogg’s!
How the fortified vitamins are usually made in China. Many are not under food regulation etc. Many additives have not been studied their just used hope we don’t get sick. How the makers of goods won’t eat their own. Reminds me of a fast food restaurant owner y workers who cross the street for their lunch lol.
I watch lots of documentaries even fun for those too busy to read days.

Problem is back in the past if you guys remembered you wanted lobster it was in a clean tank in the deli! Now it’s in the frozen section . Breads were made by the bakery from scratch now prepackaged trucked in by a company. We can’t stop eating we can only do our best hope it evens out. I haven’t used a salt shaker 🧂 for over half a year now. Don’t clap because foods even meats can have salt added by the factories. So even tho I stopped salting my foods somewhere someone is salting my can of peas! Yup

We went to Mohegan Sun 1 of the casinos here in Ct. Trudy got free tickets for Brian Wilson.. now if you ladies remember he formed the beach boys....
Wow so he is 77 and the brought him out on stage with a Walker and plopped him in front of a piano.. Al Jardine is still with him and can play and sing and they have another 8 musicians with them to make up the music..
I swear Brian must have had a stroke as he could only sing a few words and the rest of the group sang ..even with the camera on him he waant singing nor playing the piano..
Sorta sad to see..
I spent 10 bucks on the slots and won it back and cashed out..home and in bed and will be working an 8 hr day tomorrow
This happened to Frank Sinatra too. It really makes me sad how Whitney Housten destroyed her voice. Julie Andrews my idol lost her singing voice in her sixties.
I am a singer and I know how hard singing incorrectly can be on your voice. If you over sing, smoke, or do drugs it can destroy your singing voice. It does make me sad to see great singers lose their voices.
I started voice lessons because I could tell my singing technique was hurting my voice.

Lol don’t get me started on the topic will be at it for months! Another reason I never wanted JR on Oreos but he was lucky so lucky we were grasping for things he’d eat! Still picky we cave in pizza. Slowly switching him over to healthier options as possible. Sad part is even the baby foods you trusted in your days is bad for baby now. Read the back of gerber next time you visit a store. It will scare you!
Some are okay some are not!
Many are not GMO free they add GMO cornstarch to baby foods unless you pay extra for GMO free jar for baby. It warns its not a significant source of lists everything from calcium to iron! Picture above states this in the Organic GMO free baby food! Many are 40mg salt 🧂 or 18g sugars!
Cheese powder flavoring to sunflower oils y canola oil in baby toddler snacks to foods. But for a mom who can’t breastfeed due to Csection, premature birth , breast issues, cancer, medications, drug y alcohol use,etc a can of formula is the only option. I was lucky to produce 2-5 ounces per day for JR for 3weeks before antibiotics for my Csection infection dried me up. So no choice formula. Looking for one with the least cringe worthy ingredients was hard very hard.

Irish Terri: I use stevia clear in my coffee. The brand I buy comes in a green glass bottle with a dropper. It works well for me—no more heaping teaspoons of sugar in my coffee. :noway: I haven’t used stevia for cooking or baking.
Rori: It feels good to share something we value with an old friend. DH gives sourdough credit for helping him get over pneumonia many years ago. He sat beside a wood stove with a kettle boiling, ate sourdough pancakes, and drank loads of water and coffee. The combination of steam from the kettle, water, coffee and sourdough pancakes worked wonders for him. He got over the pneumonia.
Allie: Brian Wilson in a live performance? WOW! You were lucky to be there.
DH went to bed a while ago. He is not feeling well today. I hope the early bedtime will help him get some quality rest.

It's certainly much more expensive to eat healthily. Round here it's easy to buy organic, non GMO, etc etc, but not if you are poor. I buy meat from a local butcher, bread from an organic, artisan baker, fish from the local boats, loose fresh veggies from the local area, organic oats to make muesli, loose nuts, etc, and I buy the absolute minimum manufactured items and read the labels, but I do occasionally have to buy something in a package. All my food is made from scratch and we hardly ever use sweeteners or sugar, unless I am making a cake or dessert for visitors. I do use chilli sauce as a condiment occasionally. I do eat cured meats with nitrates in them, though I have cut down a lot and try to buy ones without nitrates.
All this takes both time and money and if I were pressed for either I would be using a lot more manufactured items. The stresses of kids make it much more difficult. The concern in the UK is packaging (plastic). I shop with my own bags and try to use paper bags for bread, veg etc. I'm not always successful. Far too much packaging, but the supermarkets are getting better. Tomatoes come in paper cartons etc. I'm not a saint, but I am mindful. I walk to buy my food nearly always. I get the occasional delivery for heavy items.
In most parts of the country the kind of food heaven I live in is simply unavailable, let alone unaffordable. The kind of bread I bought yesterday from the deli round the corner costs three times as much as supermarket bread. Kids probably wouldn't like it.
Time to make my morning cuppa.

Insomnia again - most likely a side effect of the Wellbutrin, but is also supposed to subside after a week or two. Hopefully I can ride it out until then.
If I were a pie... probably one of the sweet/tart ones, like persimmon. Oddly enough, though, I don't eat cooked fruit. No, not even apple pie. It's a texture thing for me.
Staying out of the fray on the GMO/organic/sweetener arguments.

Today is National Pie Day!
(Not to be confused with pi day, which happens on March 14!)
I never met a pie I didn't like so maybe I'll do something pie-related for dinner.
-Yvonne in TXPie Day!!! my favorite dessert. But I was reading? listening to a pod cast? and the talk was of a small girl who thought the saying "Pie in the sky" meant that angels were pies. (gotta love kid logic) so when a family member died the child asked what kind of pie the family member would be.
So - that's the weird conversation for today - When/If you become an angel what type of pie do you want to be?
Personally I better be one with a top crust, cause I'm not sure I'd be good at flying and falling Iguana is weird but falling pie filling would be unexplainable.

Pie? One of my favourites ... cauliflower and cheese.
I'm trying to think the last time I had a sweet pie ... mince tarts at Christmas, I suppose.
Sweetener? I rarely use it. I drink black coffee and tea without anything in it.
The only time I do use it is on the odd occasion if the coffee in Australia is just too strong ... or the coffee in the US is way too weak.
Or if I feel unwell. If I have a really bad sore throat, I might put a dash of sugar in coffee.
Or if I'm on a very, very long bicycle ride ... late in the night, after being awake and on the bicycle for 22 hours, all I want is warm, sweet coffee.
But many things are too sweet already and don't needed added sweetness.

janetO from eastern Mo I to am cutting back on tv also, especially as the first thing to do after work—setting up other habits is the way to go—try reading, walking while listening to audio book in a different space—it’s been working for me—I’m re-reading the happiness project (yeah Gretchen Rubin!). Sorry for all the stress—
I wish I could say I was “humble pie” but that isn’t entirely true so let’s say I’m pumpkin pie,
Simple, spiced and not too sweet!

Hello one and all.
I certainly went to bed way too early and found myself wide awake at 3:00 am. I made an honest attempt to fall back to sleep, but that was not in the cards. Smokey the Cat was certainly excited to have a night prowler join him. He was so happy he found a baby frog that had gotten in the house and was terribly disappointed mom caught and released it.
Katla – Thank you for the kind words. I think you are doing just as much as me collecting your bottles and cans and dropping them off to the food bank. I am sure there are tons of people who could well afford to do the same thing, but either cash them in or toss them. Believe me, getting in the fields and seeing so much open space is so beneficial to me that I am not sure who benefits more, those in need or my mental state.
Lisa – Little Levi is adorable. Love the smile on DH’s face! He’s glowing.
Rebecca – Agree with the majority regarding the pen pal. Reply to what you can read and provide a general update. Oh, the Athena pictures are simply adorable. Glad the son is keeping in touch. Hopefully he sticks with it. Also love the light switch covers.
Annie – It has to be tough for you with most of your treasures packed away. You have a great attitude and you will always be thankful you spent time with your parents.
Karen – It seems the SSI offices are all the same. My friends are finding it’s best to make an appointment and physically go in for every step in the process.
Lisa – I hope the nightmare issue has resolved. Maybe the new grant cycle stress is causing them?
Machka – I love your favorite home. Hopefully one day you’ll find another that makes your heart sing.
Teri – Playreading sounds like a lot of fun.
Michele – When I want to take a recipe with me I take a photo of it with my phone. Then, I have it and the original stays home.
Yvonne – I am so glad you had a nice beach break. The ocean certainly works wonders. My favorite pie is blueberry, but chocolate cream is a very close second. Somewhere in between the two is chicken pot pie.
JanetO – We are all works in progress and doing our best. I also had to make a television rule. And, when I do watch I make sure to get up every 15 minutes or so and move. I also found stepping in place while I watch and fold laundry keeps my steps up.
Childhood Diaries – Oh, how I begged for one. Finally got one for Christmas and logged my thoughts for about two weeks and dropped it. I have kept them from time-to-time but I have never stuck with the habit. For those of you whose privacy was violated – shame on those adults!
Artificial Sweeteners – At the beginning of 2019 I gave them up and started using organic sugar and local raw honey. Without any changes to my diet I dropped five pounds. As far as commercially produced Stevia goes most brands contain silica. I do not like the taste. Friends that use it grow their own and use the whole leaf. I tried that too and am just not a fan.
Lightening Cables – Great if you are an Apple user. I have yet to see one for the other popular brands.
MFP Issues – Every time I contact the help desk they tell me to log out and back in. If that doesn’t work they tell me to remove the app from my phone and re-install. Funny, all help desks state that so I do it prior to contacting them.
Rant on Bacterium, Probiotics, and Antibiotics – Scan at your own will. There is definitely a need to up the probiotics during and after antibiotic use (pro & anti – grow/kill – positive/negative). And, those suffering from yeast and/or stomach issues that take antibiotics frequently and/or constantly should be upping their probiotic game. There was an interesting podcast on NPR regarding the current popularity of probiotic products (oh, those marketers). The specialists speaking do not know what a good balance is and indicated through our increased use may be throwing our systems out of whack. There was also some talk about genetics and what may be good for some may not be good for others. It will be interesting to find out what the studies show over time.
I have been reading many articles about the subject and as usual it seems society wants to latch on to a cure all. I do agree we need our good bacteria and am a proponent of healthy moderation of probiotic intake. Most of the rational articles state a serving of yogurt or pickled food is enough for us to keep in balance.
With my mom and all of her health issues she was constantly having to take rather strong antibiotics. She then had stomach issues and had numerous tests, visits with specialists, etc. and no one could pinpoint the issue. She finally went to a good, old-fashioned doctor who asked the right questions and basically told her she was out of balance. His remedy, eat yogurt every day and make sure it’s close or over its “use by date”. The older yogurt contains more good bacteria than the newer. Oh, I see the frowns. The doctor stated if it’s sealed tight and there is no mold you are good to go. Mom’s stomach issues disappeared.
Like many on the board I would rather allow my body to fight off whatever is ailing it and let it do what it was designed to do - create immunities on its own. But, will take an antibiotic, if absolutely needed. The last time I had to use zpack, over 5 years ago, the warnings stated one could experience stomach issues up to 6 months after taking. I made sure I was upping my yogurt game during and after taking it and did not have any issues, TG.
Being relatively healthy I am also not a big proponent of the flu shot. Every year they push it and it’s interesting my “unofficial” office study has shown time and again over 50% that get the shot get the flu. Oh, how they like to say people do not get it as terribly as they would have without the shot but is that true? It’s 3-7 days no matter what. And, what are we actually doing to nature’s balance? All living organisms will adapt and evolve. So we give everyone shots. What are the germs going to do? They are going to evolve and get stronger. It is survival of the fittest. I do believe in immunization, but the rest….once again digress…..
Hugs to all and prayers to those in need.

Doing the FRIDAY DANCE! Whoo-hoo!! Happy Friday, ladies! Fun conversations!
If I were a pie....although my favorite pie is pumpkin; I would most likely be a pecan pie. Sweet, dense, and nutty.
Organic/top of the line healthier options: I have a very weird love/hate relationship with healthier options. Most of them are quite pricey (out of my budget). I would love to buy farm fresh, organic everything; but my budget will not allow it. The best I can do is buy whole foods and cook at home. Long ago I cut out as much processed foods as possible. (Some things I still buy because I have no time/means to make my own; such as breads, milk, meats, etc). I do look for the best quality and try to buy from local farms/dairies. I was always suspicious of baby food. lol I mean, it is canned/jarred (and now in those horrible pouches) so I know it has to have something more than just the veg or fruit that is supposed to be in it. So...about eight-ten years ago, I began providing baby food for all of the babies in my care, by simply pureeing up a bunch of veggies and fruits and meats that the other kids would be eating that week. All of my daycare kids, who have been with me since babyhood are really good and adventurous eaters. It is nice to set a dish on the table and know that they will eat (or at least try) each dish. On Monday, we had a cheesy lentil casserole and the kids loved it. Today we are having chicken and vegetable stir fry and this is also something all of the kids like. I have also found that the kids eat better when I sit down and eat with them. I try to eat the same thing, to model "good eating habits/table manners", on pasta day (for me) I switch out pasta for spaghetti squash or zoodles. As the kids get older and go to school, they begin to meet other kids who are pickier and who tend to give their personal opinion on food (Yuck! Gross!) and the struggle to get them to eat the things that they loved when they were younger, begins.
Sweeteners- my choice of sweetener has been "less". I have white sugar, brown sugar, agave nectar, and honey in my house; but I do what I can to use less of them. I am finding that if you add a fruit (like pear, grape, or apple) to many baked goods or smoothies you won't need the sweetener.

It is Friday! Raining here today, changing to snow tomorrow, little to no accumulation. I think the weather is messing with people. We had a higher percentage of grumpy people to deal with at work yesterday. Funny thing is my husband and I were both in good moods, usually if all the guys are grumpy, my husband is too. Today is a new day. I am trying to figure out how my son in law thinks. It has been in the 40s the last 2 days. Lawnmowers need washed that have been serviced. I always tried to wash at end of day so it wasn't as overwhelming. I said they needed washing on Wednesday when it was sunny. I told husband and SIL, that invoices could be called as soon as they were washed. I got back from training and said the mowers need washed. Well,......son in law says to me yesterday evening, he guesses he is getting wet this morning. SMH! I prefer to wash when not raining, but he will be washing in the rain! I don't get it.Grumbling.
Still being diligent with eating choices. Really wanted sweet last night......I had applesauce (no added sugar) still didn't quench "want". Ended up drinking more water, cleaning up kitchen, and heading to bed. I reckon this weekend I need to plan menu and go shopping. So we are going to a Superbowl party. The hostess says bring a dish to share and byob. Well, byob part is easy. Husband will take his beer. I will take my water. She is having meatballs, cheese dip and chips, bacon wrapped wennies, veggie tray, and cheesecake. I could use suggestions of what to take.....keeping in mind that other than the veggies, I am not eating any of the other things. Hmmm....if I eat before we go I will nibble less, but still need something to share....low sugar, minimal process. Time to pull out cookbooks.
Better get off here and get ready for work. Have to pick up prescription this morning. Need to buy new coffee pot tonight. Mine started leaking water a couple of days ago. This morning it was not a little water on the counter and floor 😥
((Hugs)) to all!
Make the best choices you can today!
Smile! Because you know you are loved!

Stayed home today to write a paper ... it's coming along, I think. I'm feeling pretty good about the first section. I haven't said exactly what I want to say in the second section yet, but maybe in the next couple hours. I've got to write an abstract. All the years of writing papers and this will be my first abstract. And I'm battling word limits. But it's only 9:30 pm and the night is young.
Update: Abstract done. In the computer coding world, there is no sense recreating the wheel. Therefore code is frequently and abundantly copied and modified. So I decided to adopt the same approach with the abstract. I found one I liked, copied it, and changed the words to fit my paper. Not plagiarism because I changed the words ... I just kept the format.
Machka in Oz
Done and submitted!! I'm not feeling comfortable with it, but then I never do with any of my papers ... so who knows.
I can relax for a week, then next Friday (Jan 31), we will receive the final exam. Evidently we start the exam on Feb 3. I don't know how that will work ... maybe we get some information on Jan 31 and then a key piece of information on Feb 3. It will be a paper of some sort and is due on Feb 17.
I have a suspicion that the final exam will be mainly based on the last 4 modules. My suspicion is so strong, I think I'll have a skim of the readings in those 4 modules and put together a reference page of those readings during this coming week.
Regarding stuff in storage ... from 2004 until the end of 2014, my stuff remained in storage for all but 2 years. I put it in storage in 2004 in order to live with my parents and complete my degree, then I repacked it for my move to Australia and I didn't see it again until the end of 2010. It was all unpacked for 1.5 years, then back into storage again for about 1.5 years until we moved into that gorgeous house I posted a couple photos of. The one I loved. Unfortunately, we were only able to be there for 6 months until we were off to Tasmania, and everything went back into storage again for 1.5 years.
I've been unpacked now for 5.5 years and I like that ... but it will be nice to have time to sort through it all when I finish my degree. Maybe I'll find my childhood diaries and I'll be able to tell you what I weighed, whether or not I did my math homework, what the weather was like on a random day in 1982.

Kylia,
I am so sorry for your challenges. You certainly seem to be on the extreme side of this thing. Does your insurance cover dietitians? If so maybe you can convince the doctor to give you a referral. There is so much information out there it is very difficult for us to cull through it all and maybe a dietitian would have some type of plan for you. Heck, that's what they do.
Sending positive thoughts to you and am hopeful you can get your body back in balance!2 -
We are having warmer temps for us low 30's. We are also getting duster snows. Just enough to shovel. The up side are the trees look like Dr. Zhivago. I took a painting class on painting a tree. SuziQ I agree doing what you can to keep yourself healthy could prevent many of the rountine illnesses. Too often I think our culture goes for the quick fix.7 -
Rebecca - wow, cute switch plate covers! What a neat idea! All the discussion here about singing - are you still singing opera? You may have mentioned - I'm going thru the posts here pretty skip/dash, lol. Always enjoy the photos of our Athena.
SuziQ - Sorry I'm so late in mentioning - how neat of you helping the gleaners. I think my calves and thighs would have been screaming the day after, lol. I'm taking pains to squat a bit rather than bend over these days. That is something about the iguana's falling! Poor things! My take on vaccinations & mammos:I don't get flu shots or any preventative shots for that matter other than tetanus since I'm in the garden and playing in the dirt so much. I would get a mammo for diagnostic purposes if there was a presenting problem, but haven't gotten the "recommended annual" one in years. I've had a lot of ionizing radiation in my life - X-rays, CT Scans, nuclear medicine scans. Which some research has shown can cause cancer. My doc is fine with it. That reminds me, I need to stop in the doc's and pick up the poo test.
Having wi-fi and bandwidth trouble at our house this past few weeks. Cannot watch the Roku TV and a video on the tablet at the same time after about 7 pm without the TV buffering or the modem kicking off. I'm able to run bandwidth tests from my laptop throughout the day - looks like there's a big draw on it at night, likely from increased users along the line. Will take a few more readings then get after our internet provider - something has changed and I don't think it's at our house.
So I'm watching Vera during the day First episode of Season 10 was very good.
Have a wonderful day!

MIchele, I made my own applesauce for years and the reason it was so cost effective was that all the apples I used were ones that had been given to me. In Washington lots of people have apple trees that produce more apples than they can use.

This is the one I use link for anyone needing it who shops Walmart. Hubby won’t let me shop HEB since Purse thief awhile back he doesn’t want JR to go near it now lol 😂. Not unless Navy Daughter with me...She’s 5’2 less likely to Mama Bear up so what she gonna do? I’m the one who made the last thief wet his pants y run!
Kylia-Daughter I used Jars only to leave the house for the day rest of the time was purée homemade everything! JR refused homemade y jar foods all but 1 flavor of jar food until he could chew then it was refried beans y cheese with peanut butter pancakes 🥞. He’s my extreme to the Max picky eater!
My body absorption also very very bad. I have been hospitalized when it refuses to absorb liquids (dehydration) y foods (malnutrition). This is the only probiotic I could handle had to try a bunch of types only found 1. You understand that risk if my body decides to stop absorbing it I’ll be back on the hunt.
I gained a pound since yesterday. Hubby ordered pizza cause JRs refusing foods again I ate some knew better did it instead of my shake y unsweetened Apple pie filling! I’ll do better today.
To get farm fresh I can’t do it as often as I like it’s an hour drive to get to the nearest one y big city here has one if the highest weight issues in Texas! No wonder why no health food stores with food! No farmers markets except 1 its in a rough bar police breaking up fights hubby said were not going! Best place to go here is Costco or Sam’s Club it exspensive to have both memberships so got to choose well SamsClub has cheapest y largest diaper sizes! Also less crowded so it won just cause it’s workers aren’t over whelmed so they can help you.
