March 2020 Monthly Running Challenge

I only ever run from my neighborhood; this "challenge" would not be new to me.
@rheddmobile Thanks for the above! I go nowhere so thanks for saying this from the perspective of a sane, rational and educated person as opposed to someone on an imaginary high horse and I'm being sincere. My kids are not in school. My husband works from home. I was in healthcare for 4 years of my life. Do you or anyone know how many deceased bodies I've cleaned up? Most people don't. Patients survived surgery to die in their sleep or have stroked out or have a heart attack. I've cried with people after receiving cancer diagnoses and I've held family members' hands after their loved ones passed. My husband has seen people blown into thousands of pieces and I mourned the young men that didn't make it back. I appreciate this from your perspective because it's logical and not self-centered or ignorant.0 -

We’ve been “asked” in our community to stay at home and not flood the parks. The more we can do to honor that request, the more it honors the health care workers on the front lines (regardless of whether we agree, the healthcare workers on the front lines are pleading with us to stay at home). I’m interested in hearing the positive creative ways we are all getting our runs and workouts in. I will comply with the request while my pregnant adult daughter as a paramedic is on the front lines. I’m planning to tag #StayHome with any of those that help support this request from our healthcare leaders.
I will run in my neighborhood today #StayHome
Will anyone join me?
Except if people don't believe in the legitimacy of this virus and the effects it's having it won't matter what we do.
I’m hopeful that people will come to understand the legitimacy. I think that’s been expressed clearly here on this thread by many including yourself. I also recognize that people learn things in different ways and at different rates. Sometimes finding a way to support others helps the reality sink in.
FWIW - I have asthma. My middle daughter also has asthma and has had pneumonia at least twice per school year from age 18 months through 15 years old. Which is why our family gets flu shots every year. I didn’t understand it at first but trusted my doctor. That knowledge came later in supporting her by following my doctor’s advice. She hasn’t had pneumonia once since we started homeschooling 3 years ago. I worry for her if she catches it.

Anyway, @Elise4270 My husband mentioned that show this morning. I'll give it a shot!
On another note, I cooked my homemade pasta today for lunch. It took forever to cook because it was thick but the consistency was perfect and it held up in boiling water, which I was afraid it wouldn't, and it was delicious. I want to bake a dessert next, something from scratch, but I will definitely make the pasta again.2 -
@emmamcgarity I was going to say something similar. I love this thread because we are so supportive of each other. Let's not let the virus take that away from us. Let's just concentrate on what we can do as individuals to help keep ourselves and others safe and post about how we run/walk to stay sane.
I'm going to tweak my plan again. I was going to do my 9.5 mile run tomorrow and mow the lawn on Friday, because it was going to rain again on Saturday. Now, they are calling for Saturday to be nice too. So I am going to mow then to give the ground time to dry out a little more. I am also going to put off my long run until Friday - unless I change my mind again. Thinking about getting out and doing a nice walk on the driveway. I did my taxes this morning. There was an issue with them that made my brain hurt, so I need to get out and clear my head.8 -
@quilteryoyo Yes...!!! ❤️💝💖1

Big hugs @Avidkeo - and great idea, @emmamcgarity! When I went to the grocery store this morning they were collecting donations for people who need help buying groceries, so I chipped in. I continue to be immensely grateful that my husband and my income is not currently being effected and is reasonably unlikely to be impacted in the future. I’ve been thinking hard about how to support the small businesses that are shut down right now - does anyone know how to give someone a gift certificate for a cleaning service without it seeming passive aggressive?
Also, here’s a reminder that clicking on a username and selecting “ignore” will make that person’s comments invisible and may also help with the blood pressure in these trying times. Sometimes you just got to pick your battles, and that’s one I just don’t need right now.
Also, I ran yesterday! 1.77 miles! I saw more people out than usual, but no groups larger than two (not counting small children) and everyone keeping their distance. Minnesotans were made for social distancing.14 -
I am going to comment to @LoveyChar from the standpoint of a parent whose child is treating children in Seattle. You, your, husband and your children may very well have COVID-19 not know that you have it and be spreading it to others because you think only the elderly and immune compromised need to self-isolate and let everyone else carry on (and yes I think that attitude is selfish and insensitive and I thought so the first time you posted the comment last week).
My daughter's practice, the pediatric hospital where she works as well as the clinic she works in have seen many cases of children, not immune compromised, who are VERY sick and yes some could die. They believe the parents could have been asymptomatic and brought it home or the parents thinking kids can't get it took them to the park to play with all the other children who may also be asymptomatic. Seattle has now had to close the parks and children's playgrounds because they were so crowded. I hope it doesn't happen to you but maybe the only way it will ever be real to you, and you will see that yes you do have a responsibility in this situation to take care of others, is if someone within your orbit gets sick and ends up in the hospital. Maybe because you or someone in your family did not take it seriously and transmitted it to them.6 -

I go nowhere. I am probably the least of anyone's, to include your, worries. My children go nowhere. My husband is required to be at work once every two weeks.0 -
Anyway, I ran 3.5 miles today in my neighborhood. I also walked 1 mile. Y'all are also fueling me up for a better and longer run tonight, so thank you for that! I have a Marathon to run in 10 1/2 weeks, fingers crossed. Let's talk about running!!!5

We don't have time for people to learn in their own way. That is how we end up dragging this out even longer.
Edited because I picked the wrong there from auto correct.4 -

Nice to know that some things never change, even in these uncertain times.
I have to ask, are you a quilter?
No. I think it's an awesome hobby, but I've never done it. Do I seem like a quilter? I take it as a compliment.
A jelly roll is a roll of fabrics used by quilters.1 -
@MegaMooseEsq Minnesotans were social distancing before social distancing was cool!7

Oh, wow, I didn't know that!2 -
Hi guys! Dreadmill run today - it rained all night, and though it wasn't raining in the morning, it was only in the 40's and I just didn't feel like going out in the cold (for me, lol), so did 10K and 1 mile cool down walk.
Half way through regretted not going out as it was getting boring, but then I thought of @eleanorhawkins who did a HM on the dreadmill and so I kept at it!
I'm debating on whether to run my HM that was supposed to be on Sunday. I should right? Ok I will. Why not, I'm ready for it so might as well. I do have time goal in mind, but even if I don't make that time I'll probably be glad I did it. Thanks for listening to my rambling.
As for COVID-19, a friend of mine lost her uncle (first death in Toronto)..yes he was 71, but he had no other health problems other than his age. He had never been in the hospital before. The virus took him in 7 days.
His daughter and son-in-law are in fact Dr's at that same hospital and they were devastated as he had to die alone as they could no longer do anything.
I have one completely blocked artery in my heart - the RCA. So yeah.
It is very real. It is not over hyped. It is not fear.15 -
janejellyroll wrote: »@MegaMooseEsq Minnesotans were social distancing before social distancing was cool!
For sure! Also, sorry I blew you off without saying anything last weekend - I’ve been going in and out of a pretty bad head space recently and was probably hiding in bed.4 -
I'm sitting in angio, learning how to use the machine. No walking around, I'm going to have to go for a walk soon so I can get my steps in! Ahhh6

I really wanted to walk today. I think I was outside too long yesterday and allergies got me, stabbing ear pain, headache, so I put the hammock up and laid outside in it some more.
So I was wondering, how many tp squares are you using (ladies).. I find 10 is nice, but 3-4 is doable.
I was also wondering... how much sleep do you get? I notice dh is up when I go to bed and up when I wake. So, he gets like 6hours, maybe. I like 9 and I’m still a slug.
My 60l0 lb life or Tiger King or what else ya watching?3 -

No worries, I think we're all getting through this as best we can. I've had my bed-hiding moments over the past couple weeks.1 -

3/22: 9.02 miles
3/24: 6.25 miles
3/25: 5.52 miles
91.93/90 miles completed for March
291.01/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
I ran 5.5 miles this morning. It was perfect running weather about 56°F with low humidity. The sun was shining and it was just a lovely day. And I met my goal for March. I think that running is really helping me to deal with all of this stress lately. Then I came on here to read the thread and now I feel worse than I did before.
Edited to add: As I was posting this I heard several car horns honking and just lots of commotion on the street. I got up to look and see what it was. It was a line of teachers and school staff in their cars driving down the street with signs and waving at their students who are stuck at home. I know it wasn't for me, but it kind of made me feel better.

@hamsterwheel6 I feel your dreadmill pain. It doesn't get any easier! If you're intending to run your HM on it, be prepared to take a lot longer than you would outside :-(
My new plan called for 4 miles at an easy pace this morning. Except what Hal (Higdon) claims should be my easy pace was hard as heck on that thing. Still, better than nothing.
Tomorrow I'm meant to do 400m intervals at 5k pace. I know which button I need to press for the prescribed pace. I have no idea whether A.) I'll fly off the back cause my legs won't be able to keep up, or B.) I'll die before I manage 400m at that pace once, let alone 8 times!
I will report back in about 12 hours' time, if I'm not nursing broken bones (distinct possibility, there's now a brick wall directly behind the dreadmill cause husband turned it round so he can walk on it while watching TV)

Just received the official word that the Cleveland Marathon was changed to virtual. I am at a loss for what I want to do. I really don't want my first half to be virtual because I really think I want the atmosphere which is strange for ultra introverted me to say. I feel like if I am going to work that hard I want a crowd to cheer for me. LOL. So what should I do? I have 5 more weeks of mileage building before my taper and my first 10 mile run planned for tomorrow. Do I keep going and just not run the race? Do I begin reducing my mileage until I get to a sustainable level for a few weeks until I need to start building for a fall half? Do I pour myself a hard cider and sit on the front porch (away from everyone) and contemplate the meaning of life and why I run? If you were in my shoes what would you do?10

I think I would have the cider, and then I would take the “decrease to sustainable and hope for a fall race” option. I’m an introvert with social anxiety but I absolutely love the race atmosphere and think it makes a big difference when going for speed or distance PRs.8 -
Shoot. I had written a post earlier, but it isn't here. Apparently, I edited it and didn't click on the correct button to publish it. So, I'll try to redo it.
@Avidkeo I am a quilter, but I didn't know they were called jellyrolls either. Well, I should say I used to quilt. I haven't in a while. I have a quilt top that needs to be quilted. It was supposed to be a gift for my nephew 10 years ago. Hopefully he'll enjoy it if I ever get it done. It's a log cabin quilt because he was attending Lincoln Memorial University at the time and their sports team nicknames are the Logsplitters.
@hamsterwheel6 So sorry about your friend's uncle. It is sad that families aren't allowed to visit the hospitals and people are dying (for whatever reason) without any family being able to be with them. Bless the professional healthcare staff who are there for the patients when the families can't.
@eleanorhawkins You can do it! If you find it is too fast or too much incline, don't feel that you have to keep it there. You can go a little slower if needed to stay safe. Again, I will reiterate the quote I like: "Don't let perfection stand in the way of progress."
@kimlight2 I think I would go ahead and train for it and do it as a virtual race. Then maintain a base level of fitness and when things get back to normal, sign up for another one. Of course, pouring yourself a strong one and sitting on the front porch contemplating the meaning and life and why you run is always a good choice.
Today's 2 mile walk on the driveway is brought to you by Turbotax, sunshine, and Tippy (my pup).

8.5 miles today = 7.5 running + 1 walking, and only other exercise will be dumbbell workouts.
We have yeast now and a new bread baking pan so husband and I are going to bake bread now, should be fun.
@Elise4270 We got Disney + over the weekend so lately I've been watching older Disney or Disney affiliated movies, such as Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The Sound of Music, Snow White, and last night I curled up with my baby and watched Toy Story.
@kimlight2 I would not settle for a virtual Marathon, as you registered to run it in real life. Do NOT cheat yourself, do NOT settle. You want to run a real life in person one, do it. Don't make your first a regret that doesn't count, if that's what you would consider it. I am excited for you and I do not want to see you settle for less than what you want or think you deserve. It's your money and I'm sure they can refund it.1 -

This is what I would do. Actually IS what I am doing since my Marathon went virtual... well not really I have a late summer 50k I am targeting now. Hopefully, it is far enough to still be held.

And as predicted, I missed my run (I did do 5 on the dreadmill so I could pretend I was still part of this thread LOL) and since I was able to reset the HVAC they can not tell me what tripped it. Next time they said I need to not get it working so they can do a diagnostic. Ah well, at least they did not charge me the $95.7 -

Erf the sun just came out too.
I had to wait for the plumber Sunday and missed my run. Luckily when they replaced it Tuesday Justin was home so I hid in the office and worked.
I really need to get a plumber in here too. You flush one toilet and the shower loses HOT WATER. Like seriously. Something funky going on. But that will take money and I am too busy spending that on canceled races right now LOL2 -
