If any of you are Star Trek fans... you can get a month free of CBS all access right now and binge Picard. Season finale is this week so its all up now. I am about 1/2 through, details here:
https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/25/21194378/cbs-all-access-free-one-month-trial-binge-star-trek-picard
(I do not know if it works for non-USA folks though?)7 -
@kimlight2 If it were me, for a marathon I would back off and hope for a fall one, but for a half I would go ahead and do the virtual, then maintain a “half marathon ready” level of fitness and hope for a fall race. For most people without injuries and so on, there’s no real need to cut back from being ready for a half, you can stay there more or less indefinitely once you get to that point.4

@quilteryoyo - that quilt is gorgeous! If your nephew doesn't want it when you finish it, let me know! Also Tippy is adorable!
I got stuck helping the neighbor with (computer) technical difficulties and password issues. She has a really old Windows PC (running XP still if you can believe that!) and it is SO slow. We have offered to upgrade it, even got her a new PC with newer Windows and loaded all her software so she could see that it all still works. Nope, she is comfortable with the old very slow one. That is fine until something breaks or she changes something (doesn't remember what) and you have to try to fix it. what should take a few minutes ends up being hours... honestly I find it amazing that at 86 she still uses it and knows enough to be dangerous.
That entire story just to say I haven't run yet and now it is threatening to put on me... Do I go anyways? part of me says yes and the other says no stay inside in the warm and dry and have a glass of wine!8 -

Half way through regretted not going out as it was getting boring, but then I thought of @eleanorhawkins who did a HM on the dreadmill and so I kept at it!
I'm debating on whether to run my HM that was supposed to be on Sunday. I should right? Ok I will. Why not, I'm ready for it so might as well. I do have time goal in mind, but even if I don't make that time I'll probably be glad I did it. Thanks for listening to my rambling.
As for COVID-19, a friend of mine lost her uncle (first death in Toronto)..yes he was 71, but he had no other health problems other than his age. He had never been in the hospital before. The virus took him in 7 days.
His daughter and son-in-law are in fact Dr's at that same hospital and they were devastated as he had to die alone as they could no longer do anything.
I have one completely blocked artery in my heart - the RCA. So yeah.
It is very real. It is not over hyped. It is not fear.
Biggest hugs.
Thank you. And same to you, I know we all worry about you as well. Please take care.1 -

@hamsterwheel6 I feel your dreadmill pain. It doesn't get any easier! If you're intending to run your HM on it, be prepared to take a lot longer than you would outside :-(
My new plan called for 4 miles at an easy pace this morning. Except what Hal (Higdon) claims should be my easy pace was hard as heck on that thing. Still, better than nothing.
Tomorrow I'm meant to do 400m intervals at 5k pace. I know which button I need to press for the prescribed pace. I have no idea whether A.) I'll fly off the back cause my legs won't be able to keep up, or B.) I'll die before I manage 400m at that pace once, let alone 8 times!
I will report back in about 12 hours' time, if I'm not nursing broken bones (distinct possibility, there's now a brick wall directly behind the dreadmill cause husband turned it round so he can walk on it while watching TV)
I'm hoping not to, to be honest! Weather is looking to nice and much warmer, so I'm pretty hopeful!
Oh no! Husband needs to move it back!
Good luck with the intervals and be careful!0 -
@quilteryoyo Thanks And really beautiful quilt! Looks great.0

Just received the official word that the Cleveland Marathon was changed to virtual. I am at a loss for what I want to do. I really don't want my first half to be virtual because I really think I want the atmosphere which is strange for ultra introverted me to say. I feel like if I am going to work that hard I want a crowd to cheer for me. LOL. So what should I do? I have 5 more weeks of mileage building before my taper and my first 10 mile run planned for tomorrow. Do I keep going and just not run the race? Do I begin reducing my mileage until I get to a sustainable level for a few weeks until I need to start building for a fall half? Do I pour myself a hard cider and sit on the front porch (away from everyone) and contemplate the meaning of life and why I run? If you were in my shoes what would you do?
Yeah a HM I would do, not sure about a full. Then again, I don't have any plans to do a full so I can't say.
Do what you feel comfortable with, and most of all enjoy the experience!2 -

291.01/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
I ran 5.5 miles this morning. It was perfect running weather about 56°F with low humidity. The sun was shining and it was just a lovely day. And I met my goal for March. I think that running is really helping me to deal with all of this stress lately. Then I came on here to read the thread and now I feel worse than I did before.
Edited to add: As I was posting this I heard several car horns honking and just lots of commotion on the street. I got up to look and see what it was. It was a line of teachers and school staff in their cars driving down the street with signs and waving at their students who are stuck at home. I know it wasn't for me, but it kind of made me feel better.

The teachers would have made my day too! Glad you were able to get out and run!1 -

Erf the sun just came out too.
I had to wait for the plumber Sunday and missed my run. Luckily when they replaced it Tuesday Justin was home so I hid in the office and worked.
I really need to get a plumber in here too. You flush one toilet and the shower loses HOT WATER. Like seriously. Something funky going on. But that will take money and I am too busy spending that on canceled races right now LOL
Yah ours cost us $79 for the visit/see whats wrong then $1700 to replace. But Id rather spend that then have my house start on fire. The water heater was 11 years old and had overheated a few times apparently!0 -
Well, so much for catching up on the last several days .... I guess hot dogs is no longer our most controversial topic.....
In other news. I ran 2 miles yesterday, and didn’t have the gumption to report. I really wanted 4, because it was still shorts weather (ok, wyomingite shorts weather...was definitely not over 50 degrees at the time of my run, may have been lower end of 40s).... and it was supposed to go back to yucky, icy, snowy, foggy again today (which it did). But, I just didn’t have it, I’m actually surprised I made my 2. Just was not awesome, didn’t feel good and strongly indicated today was good timing for a bad weather rest day.
Today, it is pea soup thick foggy enough, that I would be a bit nervous in my sidewalk lacking town even in my NOX vest.... based on how little I could see driving home. And I think the run goals of fresh air and vitamin d would not be getting filled very well, either. So yes, good rest day, even if body thought it should have been yesterday. I also tried to “fill in” for my short run, by doing some lifting, and on bench press, I got 110 lbs for 2 sets of 5, which is a rep pr for this round of getting back on the wagon. What I am actually saying here, is all of me hurts, and I’m updating from yesterday mostly to use up more time and further procrastinate any attempts towards even attempting my stretchy time/ROMWOD thingy.
My run plans for later this week need revised, as the USFS district here is closing any “developed recreation sites.” And although trails don’t seem to be included in this, I think all the nearby parking lots for trail heads are also “camp sites” or “picnic areas.” And I’m not yet in the sort of shape to run to the trailheads and then still run the trails. Even if I’m wrong, it’s probably an indication that these areas are probably getting over subscribed, and it wouldn’t be the peaceful nature experience I was looking for, anyways.
Since we are on reduced staffing rotation anyways, next time it is supposed to be pretty and warm, I may try and get one of my gals to come in for me. Might make my bosses happier with me, also. I know this paragraph doesn’t make much sense, but further explanation would result in hot dogs again.
Thank you all for refocusing me on my constant and reoccurring “be a better person” goal. I need jolted back to focus on that goal fairly regularly.
Run happy, and run healthy.6 -

@quilteryoyo beautiful! This was my most recent
My most recent quilt, did it for my 3yr old who loves rainbows and purple.
Well I was going to take an annual leave day tomorrow, due to having too many staff atm (an unusual complaint atm! And frankly the calm before the storm) but there are a lot of angiography cases so a perfect day to learn while I'm not needed in the department.
Damn I was looking forward to a 3 day weekend! Haha FWP...9 -

I met a friend at a local high school track this afternoon. We did a mace workout and then ran (all with appropriate distancing). We decided the track was a bit boring so went out into the neighborhoods. Turns out there are a lot of hills in that neighborhood so we got a little extra workout in. One of the steeper hills was a dead end and after we made it to the top and caught our breath, I had fun letting loose and running fast on the way back down. I almost never do that except in races so it was fun to let go. Nice afternoon stress relief.12 -
Officially the first day of lockdown here, but our family has been self-isolating since school closed on Monday afternoon. I headed out for a run around 10am and there were significantly more people out and about walking and running than usual (especially at that time of the day - lots of dads running, obviously home from work). Everyone was pretty good at the 2m distance thing, however, I did opt to stick to the streets where there is a lot more room, rather than my usual path along the water's edge which is way prettier but fairly narrow in places. Bonus is, there were very few vehicles on the road so I had no qualms about running on the road where I needed to. Any close encounters were eliminated after about 20 minutes when it started to tip with rain. Then I had the entire suburb to myself. Lovely.
My coach has us all making the most of building our aerobic base - we're going to be soooo fit by the end of the 28 days (if it ends then). Today's session was an hour - 15 minutes warm up at aerobic pace, then 30 minutes at tempo (half marathon pace), then another 15 minutes at aerobic pace to cool down. I arrived home just over a minute early and was happy to cover nearly 11km in that time. I think the cool rain really helped - it was glorious.

I ran in the neighborhood tonight before dinner. 15 minute tempo run followed by 10 minutes walk/run cool down ~~~ 2 miles total. Leg felt really strong and normal.9

@avidkeo - that is gorgeous!! I always wanted to quilt and tried a few times. I just don't have the patience.
Got out late but got a good run in. It was cold and windy to begin with then I got hot and then cold again as the heavy clouds and cold wind came back in. More rain tonight and in the morning tomorrow.
Way too many people on the trail, PD was out in the helicopter monitoring while I was dodging and weaving and stopping an waiting when needed. Hope they don't shut the trail down completely.Date.........Miles.......Total

And the number of people who set up home gyms in their backyards - I can see two from my bedroom and passed several more on my run. Let’s see who’s still working out next week 😂8 -

I'm terribly jealous of those who have gardens or are allowed outside to walk/run/bike.
We saw on the TV yesterday a video (from India I think?) where the police were making people they caught outside do squats or pushups as punishment. I was like "Jeez, the ones most desperate to get out are the ones that want some exercise, they'd probably try to get caught if that was their fine!"
Reporting back as promised... I did my speedwork on the 'rather-be-deadmill'. It was HARD, I'm probably going to have really sore legs tomorrow, but I did it and even managed the pace the plan demanded. Hal said I had made him very happy! (At time like this, it's the little things 😂)
@Avidkeo I feel for you with everything to come, it's scary! One of the worst things about the situation here is the number of healthworkers who are catching it, and nobody really knows why. Well they do... they don't have enough protective gear.9 -

Beautiful quilts, both of you! And you probably have seen a jelly roll, just didn't know it was called that. If you google it, put "jelly roll fabric" in as your search and you'll see what we're talking about.
I'm a quilter, too, and learned to quilt by hand by a group of ladies who met at a church in Pennsylvania where I lived. One of my "specialties" is finishing antique quilts that people leave behind. Sometimes it's for the grandchildren, other times it was discovered in an estate sale or I trade work for boxes of old fabric and UFO's (unfinished objects) which are like treasures to me and something other people want to get rid of.
But I do my own projects, too. Just finished this one... and am now moving on to some UFO's.
Here's a UFO pot holder that I did last week. Before and after, not sure which order they'll upload but should be obvious which is which.
Back to running... went out for a turn around/through the woods. There's a spot in the woods where twice now I've had what I call a "blip in the matrix", where I see someone I've already seen on the same run, but in a different place and it doesn't make sense to me how they got there. To be fair, the first time was a few days ago and turned out to actually be a different guy. Today it was a man and a beagle (with one brown eye and one blue). When I looked at my map later, I realized that they were probably doing an out and back and turned around shortly after I passed them the first time, and then they took the shortcut straight through the woods while I was running a lot farther out along the road than I thought. It makes sense now, but at the moment I just couldn't figure out how they got there. My running brain can't do math or figure out routes properly, but I get all sorts of good creative ideas or work out problems as I'm running along. Interesting how that works.
March goal 100 miles (stretch goal 200 km)
It seems this thread may be changing in ways I'm not thrilled with... For the record, I'm here for the running and the random, fun, entertaining rabbit trails. Like hot dog condiment debates. Or what delicious thing you just baked. Or what your family is up to. Show us your socks, for goodness sakes. I don't really want to come here and have to see the same debates that I can already find over on Facebook. I really like you all and hope I can continue to hang out here, but if it starts raising my stress levels, then it's defeating its own purpose for me.13 -

WOW! The talent in this group is amazing!2 -
Thank you to everyone who gave me opinions on what they would do in my place. I decided last night to do my 10 mile run this morning and see how it goes. Unfortunately my left knee decided it didn't like that idea. It has been tight but usually loosens up after a mile. Today it didn't and felt like it was grinding so I gave up after 3 miles. I may try again this weekend we will see how it feels. If not I will rest it and start again in a few days.9

It is sunny and supposed to be in the mid 60sF - so who wants to take bets on me being stuck in a surprise meeting and unable to get out to run?5

Everyone’s quilts are beautiful! I do dollhouse miniature quilting in 1/12 scale, when I get home (sitting in parking lot of grocery) will have to take a couple photos. @polska_girl I have a UFO of the same windows pattern as yours! I started it to challenge myself because I normally machine piece, and well, there’s a reason for that, miniature hand piecing is hard!
Got out for 10k yesterday. We started earlier so there would be less traffic and ran across the city divide (no sidewalks) to Germantown, and up to a small piece of woods. It looks like I will be able to run trails there but it was very muddy and I didn’t have trail shoes.
Most of the way there we were able to run in the middle of the road so my legs feel better.
Everyone was out and about and all being very polite about staying away from each other, with one exception - a huge family with several children running spread out all over the road and one of the little girls trailing sadly behind and dry coughing up a lung. An elderly couple walked right through the middle of them. We didn’t let them within 10 yards of us and I still felt like it was too close since we were downwind. I don’t think people quite grasp the difference between self-isolation and quarantine - if you actually have symptoms don’t go outside, period!
Stuff I saw on our run: beautiful cherry trees in full bloom. Bright green moss. Heard an owl, and a PEACOCK! We went right past the property of Melanie Smith-Taylor, Olympic gold medalist equestrian, and it seems she has peacocks. I first learned to ride from Melanie’s mother and she had peacocks too, white ones. The peacocks used to nest in the hayloft and scare the youngest students.

@shanaber Thank you. I feel for you and your neighbor. I'm one of those folks who holds onto the old familiar things as long as possible. I love learning new things, so you would think that wouldn't be me, but it is. Especially when it comes to technology. I hope they don't shut down your trail. Looks like a great place to run!
Thanks @PastorVincent, @hamsterwheel6, @Tramboman, @rheddmobile and @kimlight2 .
@Avidkeo Thank you! Love your's too! I also love the little dinosaur laying in the floor.
@ContraryMaryMary Great job on your training run!
@eleanorhawkins Yay! Glad you got the treadmill workout done without incident. WTG!
@polskagirl01 Love your quilt and that you do UFO's. I knew they existed. You did a fantastic job finishing the pot holder. I would have probably looked at that and not known what to do with it. Glad you figured out the "blip in the matrix." Those types of events make my brain hurt.
@kimlight2 I hope your next run goes better.
@rheddmobile Would love to see your miniature quilts. Glad you found a great place to run.3
