March 2020 Monthly Running Challenge

Hi all, not sure if anyone remembers me but I was in the monthly running challenge forums last year before ‘leaving’ in Dec to have a preventative double mastectomy (some pretty awful family history made it a no brainer).
It has not been the easiest road to recovery and I have felt pretty down at times thinking I will never get fit again. But it’s now 12 weeks since surgery and docs said wait 10-12 weeks. I cautiously ran a tiny bit from 10 weeks onwards and I’m slowly getting there! Managed 17.8 miles in February (plus more I didn’t track on indoor treadmill) and I’m able to run 6k in one go without stopping now - probably more but I’m desperate not to injure myself when I’ve barely begun. Trying to remind myself not to compare my running to pre-surgery, but instead think about how far I’ve come since surgery, when I could barely walk...
So I’m in for a tentative goal 36 miles for the month.
Glad to be back. 👋 X
March goal: 36 miles
March total: 3.3 miles
2/3: 3.3 miles
February total: 17.8m
January total: 0m
Great to have you back!!!!!1 -

I just got a notification that my new shorts shipped!
And @Faebert - I remember you! You are so brave to have that surgery and I hope you are doing well in your recovery. You'll bounce back and you'll be setting goals and nailing them before you know it. It's a journey. I am proud of you for what you have overcome and for continuing to press on.
Thanks! Yay for new gear!0 -

THis! YAY!@PastorVincent Awesome progress. I see a BQ in your future.
@hamsterwheel6 fantastic race! Congrats on the 1st place AG win, and series award as well!
@Faebert welcome back! You are such a brave and strong person! Take it slow coming back, and just enjoy it!
@kimlight2 yep, I would try to race both. Since you (presumably) paid to race, I think you would be doing yourself a disservice if you just ran them as a training run.
But that's just my opinion 😉 Do what you are comfortable with.
Thanks!
@Scott6255 Not quite yet for the series award..this race moved me up in standings though!0 -

I thought I was scheduled for the 2 mile option for my March race but I wanted to change to the 5 mile race. I went to the website and tried to make the change but noticed I was listed twice for the 2 mile race. I switched one to the 5 miler and reached out to verify what I saw and yes I am scheduled for both races. Start time wise and mileage wise I can do both and just treat them as a long run not a race. I am scheduled for 8 miles that day anyways so am I stupid to just leave it and do both just take my time or should I cancel the 2 mile race?
If it was me, I would run both races and do my best to PR in both races. But everyone knows I am not quite right in the head.
I would do the same, so maybe you are less crazy than you think.
Or maybe you are more crazy than you think!6 -
3.2 pushing the stroller, tires need air and I'm too reliant on my husband to do anything involving tires. Not a fantastic run, but done!4
-
@Faebert - Welcome back! It is good to see you back starting to run and healing well!
@hamsterwheel6 - Congratulations! Fantastic racing!
@Camaramandy648 - I think contact lenses are a great option and wish I could wear them now so I could read my phone without my glasses. I wore contacts for years when I couldn't see more than 3 feet in front of me and had an astigmatism. I don't know for sure that they impacted the change in my eyes but I have no astigmatism now and have excellent distance vision. I only need glasses for reading and the computer.
@mandabeth34 - love your crazy pup! I have a crazy one too. I think the crazy ones make the best running partners though!
Had a really hard time getting motivated to go out to run. It was beautiful out when I did but I struggled the entire run with very little energy. Hobbes and I enjoyed the trail though and stopped to take a few pictures.I finished with 4.85 miles for the day and will set up my ticker tomorrow. We have agility class tonight and I need to get ready for that.10 -

@hamsterwheel6, @PastorVincent, @T1DCarnivoreRunner, @Scott6255, @ContraryMaryMary (I hope I didn't miss anyone.
Thank you for the feedback. The 2 miler is first so I will try to race both of them. I will have about 15 minutes in between both races to recover so it should be ok. Glad I am not crazy for trying this.7 -

@Faebert so glad to see you check in. So glad to hear you are recovering and easing back into running. I'm sure it must have been a major thing to recover from and you are doing great to be back up to 6k. Take it slowly, you will get there!
@hamsterwheel6 great job on your race and age group win!

Group speedwork tonight - I nearly bailed because while it got up to 50 degrees today, it had started raining this afternoon and the temp was dropping. But we started a new little "team challenge" this month where your team gets points if you attend groups, so I didn't want to let my team down already. We got really luck and the rain pretty much stopped or was very light. The workout was long intervals of 5-7-3 minutes with 3 minutes recovery in between.

Have you run a Marathon in Texas yet?0 -
Great run @hamsterwheel6 !
Welcome to all of the new people!
@Faebert Glad you are back and doing so well!
@shanaber Glad you enjoyed part of your run, even if it was hard. Hobbes is so regal looking in that last picture!0 -
@mandabeth34 your running buddy is adorable!
@LC0924 welcome!
@hamsterwheel6 great job on your race!!
@paymentm welcome!1 -
@Faebert I remember you! Welcome back! I’m glad to hear you are recovering but wish it had been smoother for you. Listen to your body and do walk/run intervals when you need to. You’re smart to be cautious and avoid injury.2

I ran 3 miles tonight at an easy pace. Just like my training plan told me to. 😇9

@Faebert
That is so inspiring! Glad you are getting back to running! Cheers!
@hamsterwheel6
what a great accomplishment!

My goal for the month is a very conservative 100km but mostly to finish my HM on the 22nd, which I'm (as usual) feeling overwhelmingly unprepared for although I am no less prepared than for my other 2. Silly brain.
I think the month always starts out with more people than it ends with Some of you can take that as a challenge to stick with this!
Your preparation doesn't look too bad to me. You've had some long runs over the past several weeks, and I'm guessing you're planning at least one more between now and then... you're doing active things and running regularly. You've done this distance before and know what to expect and what mistakes to avoid. You should be fine
Thanks, yes I have a 12-mile this weekend and then just 10km the last weekend before race weekend because I also have a 5k race that Sunday. Apart from the week I was ill I've stuck to my plan impeccably, just that entire week out of action made me go into panic mode. Well that and my silly brain always does this 'omg I'm not ready for this' thing before pretty much everything **rolls eyes**5 -
@quilteryoyo - Hobbes hates to have his picture taken. Honestly I have no idea what he thinks is occurring but he won't look towards me. I finally took a treat and put it on my shoulder so he would look towards me long enough to take the picture 😂 Silly pup!5

Managed another 5k or so this morning. Have worked out a route that incorporates some of my old nasty hills but not all of them! Am thinking to begin with little and often to get fitter then build up distance and time - does that sound right?
March goal: 36 miles
March total: 6.6 miles
2/3: 3.3 m
3/3: 3.3 m
February total: 17.8m
January total: 0m7 -
@Faebert little and often and a gradual build up sounds awesome, but do make sure the often part doesn't get too out of hand and you allow your body to rest and recover in between!1
-
@shanaber , I have the same problem with my dog. She will be staring at me for an hour, I get the camera/phone out, and she turns her head! I'll have to try the treat on my shoulder trick.1

01/03 5km
03/03 5km
Total 10km of 80km for March
Am in a bit of a quandry at the moment. I've got a niggling pain in the hip, it's not much, it doesn't hurt more whilst running (it does when getting up after sitting down for a while), but I'm worried now that it will curtail my mileage for the month - especially now that I've got my eye on a 10K at the end of the month. I've looked up some exercises to strengthen my hips, is there anything else I can do?
Goals for the year:
1. Get back down to a decent running weight (currently set at 160lb)
2. Run a sub-60 minute 10K
3. Run at least 4 10K races
Current races planned:
28/03 Richmond Park 10K
14/06 Lincoln 10K
17/10 Autumn Richmond Riverside Run (10K)7 -
wow this board is super busy! I'm new around here so i'm not that familiar with any of you so its pretty intimdating about who to comment on. I'm sure i'll get on board as time goes forward.
March goal 40 miles
Total so far 4.6
Going out today before work for a few more miles. As I slowly get back into running one of my goals is to not let my work schedule get in my way . My job requires me to work early mornings mid day shifts and night shifts most weeks I work all three different shifts . This has been my biggest problem with training over the last few years so I need to find a way to motivate myself even with a crazy schedule. Others do it (nurses) I can do it too. This month is all about getting consistancy back into my running schedule and controling my diet. Long term goals as far as weight and race distances will come after that.
Good runs to everyone

Hobbes looks very happy! What happened with him shivering cold the other day? Did it just go away? (Sorry if I missed your posting about it!)2 -

@janejellyroll @shanaber @emmamcgarity Thanks! My puppy loves being told how cute she is. She's also my little bundle of unstoppable energy, but I did get her specifically to be a running buddy, so it was a deliberate decision to get a high-energy running breed.
She thinks we got her to be an intrepid bird and squirrel stalker.
3/1: 10 miles
3/2: 3 miles
3/3: 5 miles
This morning was my last run until Friday. The next two days are my strength and conditioning and cross training days. 18 miles in 3 days is a lot for me so I'm looking forward to the break!6 -
@hmaddpear
sounds like you caught what I have. Started in my hip flexor (front of hip), wrapped around to the back of the hip, now its in the groin. I have self-diagnosed (who needs a doc when you have google) iliopsoas bursitis - kinda painful pop in my inside hip/groin area where that little bursa hangs out. I finally decided to go see a sports medicine doctor today. I have always had very tight hips/psoas.
The advice I have received over the past 2 months - roll/stretch hams, glutes, hips, flexors, back and IT Band. Strengthening exercises for glutes, hamstrings and especially core. Also, icing and ibuprofin. I have avoided the "take time off" advice but will do this if the doctor tells me that will fix it. And I will check out new shoes with a proper fitting once I am running again.
It hurt after running a little farther, then when I was just walking - big limp! I obviously tweaked something and have ignored it so that it just hangs out waiting for the next attempt at exercise.
Hope your hip feels better soon.5 -
did 2 miles and tested out my back. it was supposed to be slow but well, i went for speed demon. back was fine. her paws were fine. sounds like we are good to go9

Morning!
@PastorVincent the soap vs. coronavirus had me laughing out loud!
@hamsterwheel6 I will for sure let you know!
Everyone else who commented on the contacts vs glasses thing - thank you! All good insight! I'll know more next week!
Today is my birthday. I am 35. I hate my birthday. It's different when both parents are dead and all of the family lives far, far away. Still, every year, I pick myself up out of the bed that I love so much (haha) and decide that when my kids are grown, I want them to know it's okay to celebrate themselves. Which means.... they have to see me celebrate myself. Since I don't want to make a cake today, or cook a meal, when I get off work, we are going to my favorite bakery and we will each pick out one sweet item and savor it and then we will go see The Call of the Wild. Then, we'll end the night with a toast. A toast to me, a toast to us. We are a pretty cool little group of three. And we have so much going for us, and so much to look forward to. The best is yet to come!
So the amazing thing that happened was that after the kids' therapy last night - Madison asked me if I would take her to walmart to buy me things for my birthday. I asked if she had any money and she said, "No, can I just use yours?" I didn't want to stamp out her fire, so I said yes. Into the abyss we went.... We left with a giant bag full of birthday things and I wasn't allowed to see anything. When we got home, I had groceries to put away, lunches to pack, baths to make kids take.... It was bedtime! I just knew she would be over-tired, not get up on time, and all that birthday stuff would sit in the bag for a year (she has a lot off attention deficit that accompanies her other diagnoses - this was not a judgement of her character or good nature). Well! When I woke up this morning at 5, she had shut my bedroom door and I could hear her in the kitchen working away!
When I came out, she had turned on the coffee pot for me, even! Cookies, streamers, hugs, and even the dog was in a party hat! I am so, so, so proud of her! She said, "I just wanted to do what you do for us because it is so special."
Pretty cool, huh?
Also, I wish I could run 35 miles for my 35th. But there won't be time. The new girl called in and i have double the workload + birthday festivities so I probably won't run today at all. That's okay. Another day is fine.18
