Looks like everyone is planning to bake bread! Flour and yeast are gone.
We've got quite a bit but I thought I'd have a glance at the yeast and maybe pick up one more package.
Oh well ... baking soda and lemon juice it is!
My husband used to bake bread and wants to give it another go.
For those of you who may not know, he had a workplace accident 2 years ago which resulted in a severe brain injury. He has made some recovery. He's able to be somewhat active but his left leg and right arm don't function as well as they did (similar to what might happen to someone with a stroke). He gets fatigued very easily. And his cognitive function isn't what it was. Just to name a few issues.
So, when he says he wants to bake bread, it's a long process. He has the idea and starts to read and research about it, a little bit at a time over a few weeks. Then he starts to collect ingredients which can be a bit challenging because his short term memory isn't very good so if he doesn't write things down, he forgets stuff. Eventually, though, he gets everything together and does it! But the first time or two usually aren't brilliant because he's forgotten something or missed a step or whatever. However, after a couple months, he gets there.
We've been through this process with banana bread, we're in the process with crumpets (or what I call English muffins) and he is starting the process with bread.
There's no way I'm going to stand in his way ... I encourage him! Even if it does mean eating rather dense rubbery crumpets for a while. I am no neurologist but I figure that letting him do this is good for his brain. It might help make those reconnections and I can see that he has a sense of satisfaction.
And he does persist and get there ... the last few banana breads have been lovely! It's a pity he has no sense of taste and smell anymore so he doesn't know, but he does know he's got the texture right.

@Machka9 - I started reading along on this group a few days after your husbands accident. I remember reading he was in a coma, I kept coming back looking for an update on how he was and also what had happened. It just made me tear up how well he is doing with his baking. I think you need to give yourself a pat on the back too, you have supported and encouraged him whole.
We had to get security for our nursing home today. Apparently people think rules don’t apply to them and still want to visit.
Schools are closed indefinitely, most people are saying until September. Our borders are closed to international flights.
Like everyone else I am a little sick of the Virus talk but it’s consuming people’s lives right now.
I thought I would share a funny meme though.
I am not on quarantine.

Well, the gal who hosts the mahjongg has cancelled for the next few weeks. She didn’t say exactly why, but I suspect it might have had something to do with this one girl. Even if she is sick, she will come. But I don’t know that for a fact.
Jess just called to say “thank you” for the care package. It appears that Colby (the bf) has gotten permission to work from home all the time so he’s planning to go out there. In a way, I kind of hope that he isn’t too much of a distraction for Jess. I know, I might very well be overly worried. I just can’t help it. I also know that there’s nothing I can do except pray.
Margaret – glad your friend’s son made it home OK
Amber – thanks for the list. More of a reason why we need to get our pool opened asap, if all the gyms are going to be closed.
M – I would bring my tablet onto which I’ve downloaded books to read. I would probably bring a craft/crafts (crochet, x-stitch, etc)
Nite chicas

Hi Gals,
Hugs to all…
Virus crap –So my county is in shelter in place and the rules say that we are to stay home except for “essential services” Thru April 7th. That is a broad head line which includes the expected things Fire, police, EMS, hospital… but also keeps the grocery and “to go” food places open and allows “agricultural workers, farmers, and support of livestock” there’s pages of stuff. But my work at camp is an “urban farmer” with chickens (AKA Livestock) So I will – we hope, be able to continue to work.
I have been in and out of tears all day as I feared that all I have worked for would disappear. I have lived below the poverty line for 10 years. Made most of my bills on time, worked very hard, volunteered when I could, reached out and been supportive – and to have some gosh darn germ steal it all away seemed so wrong and unfair.
And to see that the current government programs were not available for me. But the silver lining is I’m an agricultural worker!!! While that is not enough to pay everything it is a start. Then tonight a neighbor came down, he knows my financial situation is not strong, but that I make it, and he wanted to tell me that he and his wife have talked about it and wanted to loan me what ever I need to get me through. I feel so supported and cared about. It’s amazing.

Kim your story shows the strength and love that others are showing through this crisis. Gives me hope.
I fell alsleep on couch again and now I look at the time and see how late it is.
I got done with what I needed to so now I can settle down and start living this new rountine. I know I will sleep in tomorrow.3 -
Lanette ROTFLMcalmAO the photo from ’77. Is “Little Sicily” OP or hybrid?
Lisa love your comments to Machka about social media. What I would have said, but better than I could have.
Beth “Interesting what people think are necessities” so true.
Machka “What might you bring to a cabin like this if you were to stay there for a couple months?” Toilet Paper  seriously: Joe, dogs, books, guitar, mending. “2 to 6 months”? :noway: Loved the cartoons, thank YOU! Bravo to your DH for his baking forays. Sure you are right that it helps heal his brain.
Amber bananas in the fridge? Always thought that was a no-no but googled it and found Thanks! “…by July or August” :noway:
Welcome @RustArt5! In what context did UAC appear?
Rita (((hugs))) seems strange to close campgrounds, would imagine it relatively easy to maintain social distance there. SMH.
Tina “… won’t need the TP…” LOL!
Margaret your talking neighbor how to parallel park perfectly. Great goal. What is a “kindergarten hug”?
Pip Smooch that pooch right on the schnozz!
Allie Oregon has closed schools and only allows takeout from restaurants and bars at least to April 14.
Kylia, Nicorette gum was a big help to easing out of my nicotine addiction. But the main motivator was a near-killing pneumonia, 8 days in hospital, 3 weeks on oxygen and losing 5 weeks of work. Good luck gal, YOU can do this without having to go there.
Samand your dog!
Karen Precious FB post. What a fine young man!
Tracey ditto your kudos to Machka for her support of her husband. September? Oh my no!
Kim (((hugs))) and thanks be for your neighbor angels.
Still haven’t updated the stats, but this is enough for now.

Hi all!
Kim - So glad you are an "agricultural worker". You must be needed in other places as well I would think. We need people like you. Kudos to your neighbour.
You could probably embroider and sell badges. One would be, I'M ONLY 69 and the other I'VE ALREADY HAD COVID 19.
Beautiful sunny day here. I see a run in my near future. Will have to put sunscreen and sunglasses on.
Worked out that, even with my pizza and wine, I still broke even on my calories. Hooray. An evening walk, if the weather's nice, seems a good idea right now.
Lots and lots of virtual hugs to all my friends on here. We will get through this.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx3 -
Tracey, love the "me after I eat all my quarantine snacks in one night" meme! Made me LOL!
Machka, I truly believe that your encouraging your hubby is a huge help to keep the neurons firing! We learn by repetition, so if he persists in trying to make something, he will get there! And if you didn't encourage him, he would just quit, so kudos to you.
So much to catch up on, finally caught up, but of course can't remember whose posts I wanted to comment on!
Baby photos! Oh my! Love them!
Well, was sitting here earlier trying to decide if I really wanted to go to the Y on Tuesday. Came upstairs, checked my email and found the decision made for me as they have closed for the time being. Not a huge surprise, while there were still people there today, there definitely was not the usual numbers. Went to grab a few extra groceries, Costco wasn't bad, managed to get what I wanted from there, but our Superstore was awful! Lots of people, and lots of empty shelves! Wasn't able to get the meat that I wanted (looking for chicken and pork chops), so will try a few other stores tomorrow and see what I can find. Bonus to not going to the gym in the morning, I'll hit the stores earlier! I'm not too worried if we have to self quarantine for a few weeks, I went through my freezer yesterday and took stock of what I had, and we're fairly well set up. I would like to get a few more things tho, just to top up what we have. And we need to eat while we're waiting for the potential self quarantine too! Not one scrap of TP anywhere, altho I did see facial tissue and paper towels at Superstore. I'm one of those people who buy lots of the stuff when it goes on sale, so we're in decent shape there too. Fun times!
Beautiful sunny day here today! And finally the wind stopped blowing! It was so cold the last few days, sunny, but a strong wind right off the polar ice cap! Brrrrr.....
Anyway, enough for now, really must go to bed!
Hugs for those needing them, congrats to those celebrating and welcome to the newbies!
Evelyn, who also would love to bury her head in the sand and forget about COVID19, but it's real folks, and isn't going to go away quickly or quietly! Lets all do our part to stay safe and healthy!3 -

C19 isn't going away in the next few weeks.
There are people here who were making decisions on a week-by-week basis ... we're going to take this minor precaution this week but things should be better by next week ...
Then it extended out to 2 week ... in 2 weeks' time, everything should be better ...
Now, when most people talk about it, they talk about resuming their lives in May ... or June ... or spring. Except for my husband's Return to Work person who thinks everything will be back to normal in early April.
But when I listen to some of the medical "experts", they're saying it might ease up a bit in North America over the summer, but it'll likely be back in your autumn. Down here, it's just expected to escalate through the winter and hit a peak somewhere in July/August.
Regarding vaccines: if the early vaccines that are just coming out actually do work, and they can produce enough, they're not expected to hit the market for 12-18 months.
https://www.news.com.au/world/north-america/coronavirus-trial-of-potential-covid19-vaccine-begins-in-the-us/news-story/5abbbd08551a212795f6ff293028e34b
So get your supplies, get comfortable, and settle in.
Interestingly, now that everyone has enough toilet paper, rice, pasta, quick oats and flour to last for several months, people are buying things to amuse themselves and to keep busy.
That's part of where my question of what you'd bring to a remote cabin in the woods came from. Craft stores are selling like crazy just now. When I've been in the used book section of my local OP shops, there have been more people.
I've been buying a few books because I would love to curl up in bed to read. But I might have to think what else I might like to do!!

Kim Your post is heartwarming. You are essential personnel! We all knew that.
Machka I loved your cabin thought-provoker because it made me start thinking about how I will use this opportunity. It will be interesting to see what we all make of it. I think I will do yard work, declutter, cook, and read. Kettlebells and planks and squats. Walk & dance. Improve communication with my partner. Teach my dogs some new tricks and take them for walks. And yes, get my banjo out and reteach myself how to play it. So much to do and so little time!

Good morning all. Trying times. Slowly shutting down public access to our services and directly people to phone/internet. Working with state to find increased ways to have at least some staff work from home to keep services going. Limited numbers allowed in lobby yesterday. Cutting back more today. Have things set up so people can drop off paperwork in isolated entry and we can then collect and process to keep benefits going. Anticipating large increase in new applications. My management team in all areas working very well. Making up solutions on the fly.
Heading to office to revise plans yet again.
Take care all,

Hi, Everyone!! Happy St. Patrick's Day! It's my 25th anniversary with the love of my life ! Hope you are all calm and doing well. We are fine here in NC. We have everything we need. DH has a month’s supply of MRE’s he purchased at least 6 months ago. I thought he was crazy when he bought them, but they are there just in case! I don’t want to know what’s in them. Lol. I have been praying, breathing and stretching in addition to my usual routine to avoid panicking as so many others. I feel calm and healthy and properly prepared. Happily, my children in Florida checked in on us this weekend. I know they are concerned with us being in the "older, more fragile" category, but I still love that they care enough to make sure we are being careful!
Cuteness:
Oh Pip! I just love the doggy pictures!!
Lanette TP joke was hilarious! Love the 70s picture. I wish there was a way to teach young women that what they think is fat is super thin. I was anorexic as a teen and still thought I was fat. Such a waist!
Carol I need those earrings…
Heather Love your photos! Everyone looks so happy!
Rita So sorry you and your family were so close to the tornado!! And I think I missed wishing you a happy birthday…Happy New Year since the birthday wasn’t the best! Sorry, also, that your health was compromised from the stress of the problems at the campground!
Michele I’m thinking there is very little way church will be back by Easter! I hope it will be over by then, but now they say it could go through July or August. That would cancel two trips for us! Sigh, but a small price to pay to stay healthy!
Sam and Rita Sweet puppies!!
Marianne Congrats on finishing your race! I am so inspired!!
Karen Love the visiting through the window! I’ve seen a few of those. The family celebrating grandmother’s 100th birthday, and man still professing his love for wife of 67 years on their anniversary. So touching!!
Amber I’m touched that you and husband made sure your older relatives had supplies they needed! I love the name Amber, too! Don’t understand people sometimes!!
Margaret Glad you were able to see your son with extra precautions!
Sue Your Mom is beautiful and love that she had the fur baby in her lap!
Annie Happy for you that your date went well!
Debby Nice to see a face to go with your name. Love your profile pic!
Terri Very encouraging post – Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Tracey Love the baby comic!! That’s how I feel!!
Please stay healthy and safe!!! Luci hunkered down in WNC

Hello one and all.
I know many are up to their ears with Covid-19 updates and information. This is what is going on in my life during this time. There is nothing dire here – just a SuziQ update. And, I am choosing to look at the pluses. It is official! We are working remote until the end of the month. The office will remain open just in case someone is going stir crazy and needs to get out of the house. Honestly, I feel safer at home and plan upon hunkering down as if I am waiting for a hurricane.
There are many positives to the remote situation. I will gain anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half in commute minutes. I am only ten miles away from work, but there are days when the traffic is so bad it can take me an hour to get home. I can avoid contact with a lot of people. We have over 120 in the office. There are five doors I need to go through in order to get to the ladies room. I live alone and will only be exposed to my own germs. There will be no food temptations! This is a big plus. I will not because I will not tempted by others baked goods, candy, etc.. Although I see making banana bread is in my future!
I imagine my house and garden will start to look very clean. With the time gain I will be doing a small house project every day. This morning I cleaned a bathroom (I have two full and one powder room). I am actually looking forward to a clean home as I am a little lax in that area. Why do housework when there are so many better things to do with my time. As a hurricane approaches I typically go house cleaning crazy because I think, oh, my I will not be able to do laundry, vacuum, have hot water, lights, etc. Again, I will be treating this time as a way to get my house in order and eat-off-the-floor clean.
I have decided to practice normalcy. I will continue to get up at the same time as always, shower and dress every day, get my morning exercise in, walk a few times a day when taking a break (I do this at work), eat at regular times, and keep to my general routines. No, I will not be dressing in office clothes (oh, the savings in laundry!!!!!). I think it’s important for all of us to attempt to stay as normal as possible along with staying away from too much news.
Kylia – Your GD is making great choices for a teen. Your family must be very proud of her.
Rita – Sorry about the water drama and basically the eviction of all of the residents. Oh, the peace and quiet you are now experiencing must be wonderful.
Marianne-WV – Congratulations! Like you I said I would never ever and then recently signed up for a Virtual 5k Walk being sponsored by Prevention magazine.
Michele – Is PJ OK? Pete needs a smack across the top of his head. Holes can be repaired – geez!
Karen – I saw that FB post and it brought both tears and a smile on my face. We will all have to think outside of the box for the time being.
Sue-WA – I love the picture of your mom. She looks like she is a firecracker under cover.
Machka – I agree 100% with you. If DH shows interest and wants to learn new things and have new experiences it is definitely a super plus regardless of how long the process may take. Learning new things for any of us expands our brains and I am certain it is helping his too.
Kim – Big hug to you. Your neighbor’s offer must have brought tears to your eyes. I know it brought them to me.Not to get too political here…… Someone reminded me of the stimulus during the Bush years when we all received a check. I think they need to cut the BS and just do it.
Ginny – Thank you and all the other social services workers. You are especially needed now and we all appreciate your dedication and hard work.
Cabin Living – I could do it with or without electricity, sewage, running water, and all modern conveniences. So depending upon the set up my list of things to bring would differ. For either situation I would bring a ton of reading material, an axe, a first aid kit, general tool set, a decent hunting knife, a map of the area, a guide of the area, water filtration, and non-perishable foods.
Hugs to all and prayers to those who are suffering and are in need of assistance. We are all in it for the long haul and as Margaret pointed out need to take care of ourselves and help those in need.
SuziQ – SFL – Who Must Stick to Her Routine and Get Ready for Work!

Happy St Patrick's Day!
I had my first person call in with credit card to pay for mower. She did have to help me load it in her car. I told her you look that way, I will look opposite. We will be fine. I put receipt on ground, then she picked it up. Still wiping between customers. I may need to wear rubber gloves just because my hands are so dry from wipes and soap! I hate rubber gloves! They gross me out!
I went out during work hours and was able to pick up necessary meds with little problems. I have "loaned money" to my youngest's family to get foods. Youngest daughter has to eat vegetarian due to kidney issues. With the unknown needed to buy prepared plant based foods(expensive). They have rice. I found potatos. We are sharing. Husband and I did go out last night for just a few items. Other than some prescriptions that we can't order except at certain times, I believe we can handle it if we need to stay home.
Our polls are closed today. Glad I voted by mail.
Ladies, we are strong and independent. I appreciate all the information both what is happening as well as goals for being home. We have each other! Keep the pictures of children and pets and flowers and crafts coming! I love them all! Thank you for the encouragement!
I am experiencing no internet this morning, so typing on phone. I am caught up again.
If you are out and about be smart about your actions.
If you are home, attitude change helps. It is a staycation! Make it count! We may not have personal contact, but this day in age, we can still have social contact. Phones, Skype, facetime. Think about it, less than 20 years ago, internet was slowwwwwww. Cell phones charged by the minute. Only the rich had satellite tv. Long distance on phone was charged by the minute. I see no reason for anyone to be in isolation, other than physically.
Take care of yourselves and your neighbors as able.
❤

Kim - I agree with Heather's suggestions - design a patch for those who've had C-19 (I'm adopting Machka's abbreviation). I've been worried about you since all this began. So glad there are people there who care for your welfare.
Machka - I love that image post.
And, since I can't beat them, I'll join them:Some interesting fallout:
Amazon is hiring 100,000 people for delivery and warehouse work, and paying all Amazon workers employed in those positions $2 more an hour. They expect their demand to rise quite sharply. I think that's a very bright business move on their part, because I think their sales are about to explode. (https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/16/21182411/amazon-hires-employees-warehouse-delivery-pay-raise-coronavirus)
All Girl Scout booths in our state have been shut down for the year (but cookies can be ordered online). Many, if not all councils, are doing the same thing. The impacts of this could ripple for a number of years. Councils depend on those cookie sales to pay staff, pay rent, do everything it takes to keep the organizations running. Impulse buys are the reason people buy these cookies, and this will take a big hit. I sense layoffs coming in the near future, especially for the northern tier councils that hadn't started booth sales or had barely started them for the year. I just don't see any way that online sales will make up for the impulse buy revenues.
A few good things:
--The world pollution levels have dropped sharply in every country impacted so far. Even though they'll come back as they gear back up to full production again, at least it's something.
--Haven't found any statistics, but surely this must be diminishing the number of people who would have caught the 'flu on any given year, with people staying away from each other and public places.
--Introverts like me are very happy to stay home.
I think of you all every day - stay safe and enjoy the moment while this world slows down just a little.
Love y'all,

Good Morning all! Happy Tuesday! I am home and ready for the kids to arrive for care, today. Four of the kids are staying home this week, with parents who are working from home; but I am also having a sibling or two join us this week; so I am thinking I will have only four or five each day this week. Should be fun and a nice change for the kiddos who will be here. We are continuing with our Mountain Region learning. We have learned about mountain goats, eagles, formation, the climate, and heights (of different mountain/mountain ranges). This week we will be studying snow leopards and mountain lions, sherpas and porters, walking and climbing activities (thanks to a park with a climbing wall and trails, right across the street).
I only have a couple of pics of the grandsons, as I am STILL waiting for my daughter to post hers or at the very least, send them to me, so that I may post and talk about my time with them. Despite the unusual circumstances that unfolded over the course of last week/weekend, we had a really nice visit. We got the boys out to parks and trails. Had a wonderful birthday party at home with just us. Made home made bbq chicken wings/drumsticks, mac and cheese, and salad for birthday dinner; birthday brownies with ice cream for dessert. Over the course of the visit, as I set Joaquin up with some paint and art sessions, got outside for walks/runs and play time; Joaquin decided I was okay. lol I got a few hugs and snuggles from him. We went to an outdoor water park (not water theme park, but water garden type of place) in downtown Fort Worth and Joaquin and I "ran" (as fast as a three year old can) about a mile there, took all of the steps up and down throughout the park, (we counted them as we went up and down) and ran all of the way back to our car. Needless to say, I think he was impressed with me. Which is good, because I was impressed with myself. This happened on Sunday. Monday at 2:00 am, I was awake (I think I only slept about a half an hour) to catch the Uber to the airport. So...Colin and I headed home. Arrived at O'Hare, in Chicago, at about 8:30 in the morning. (Neither airport was chaotic as the news portrayed; normal crowds, no long lines, no excessive screenings) THEN...I began the three hour drive home. Got home to unfolded laundry on the couch (thanks for the effort, Tim) and my hubby, in all of his arthritic pain, made like Goldilocks while I was away and obviously tried to sleep in every bed in the house to get comfortable. (He had the flu when I left) SO...off came the bedding from all of the beds and into the wash it went. All six loads. By 4:30pm, I was at the grocery stores. All I can say is thank God I can cook and plan meals with "alternative" ingredients. AND thank God, I am not an "over-reactor" by nature. Some of the people in the stores were absolutely.nuts! I had planned to pick up a couple of pizzas from Aldi and bake them when I got home; but there was a run on pizzas! ?? Picked up tacos on the way home, so that I wouldn't have to cook. Got home, unloaded/put away groceries, ate dinner, and said "I am going to bed." Nope. Forgot about all of the beds! Ugh! Finished up laundry, made beds and rolled into mine at 8:30. Woke up this morning feeling every jogging step, every stair climbed, every squat done while playing with the boys! Oh well, After moving around, I feel better. A new day, a new week and you know what? People are surviving COVID-19! Life will go on. Business will resume. I think, what we will gain from this is better hygiene practices, better emergency preparedness, and possibly a better healthcare system/plan in place for ALL? (Fingers crossed on that last one!)
Love and hugs to all! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

I think it’s important for all of us to attempt to stay as normal as possible along with staying away from too much news.
SuziQ – SFL – Who Must Stick to Her Routine and Get Ready for Work!
Absolutely!!
I am anxiously waiting for them to tell us all to go home!!
No commute = extra 1.5 hours in my day.
I also plan to create a schedule for myself that will include work, university stuff and exercise mainly, but possibly some other things.

Happy St. Patrick's Day, ladies.
Machka - I spent a couple seconds looking for the 4 leaf clover and started to get dizzy, lol. Probably from lack of coffee.
Kim - I too got a little teared up reading about the generosity of your wonderful neighbor.
Got an email from Centurylink, our internet provider, they are going to waive late fees for a while, crossing fingers other companies will step forward to take the pressure off of folks with reduced income.
Barbara - Little Sicily is a hybrid, got the seeds from Totally Tomato: https://www.totallytomato.com/product/T00434/82. As I've mentioned before, I'm getting great germination on most of the other varieties as well. Much better than last year with the same seeds, which are now a year older. The universe must have figured out the neighborhood will need more tomatoes this year?
Everyone- I enjoy reading how we are all dealing with things individually and in our communities throughout the world.
Cleaner is coming this morning, so I'll head to town and see what's left. I went shopping last Thursday, and other than TP & hand sanitizer, the shelves were looking pretty good on food, so I grabbed a few more of the things we eat. Yesterday I heard that cereals and canned goods were getting cleaned out, so am curious. Maybe the stores won't be crowded, that's a plus! The stockers are getting a workout, I'm sure.
Also saw on Facebook that a Grocery Outlet somewhere was only allowing seniors to shop the first hour or two they are open. So will see if there's now a similar policy at the one in our community.
Main thing I want to pick up is more Kim Chee and sauerkraut. Something tells me there hasn't been a run on those items, but you never know. We quit making our own kraut a few years ago when the last couple batches got a "bad bug" - tended to rot more than ferment. But willing to give it a try again, all I need is cabbage and non-iodized salt and we have plenty right now.
OK, need to pick up around here.
Make it a good day.
