I just got an email from my "country" friend in W Va who shared her sourdough starter recipe. Something to take up time or a fun project with the kids or grandkids. Here's her recipe with her delightful country flavor thrown in:
If you’re adventurous, you might try capturing your own yeast. Use a cup of warm water from boiled potatoes, add a little sugar, a few grains of salt and some flour to make a slurry thinner than pancake batter and let sit covered with a paper towel or cloth on the counter until it gets bubbly. If it smells good, fry a drop to see if it tastes good. If it smells nasty, dump it, sterilize everything and start over.
Once you get a strain that you like, guard it with your life. Use half of it and replenish the other half with more water & flour and store covered in the fridge. Replenish it at least every couple of weeks and throw out or give away half if necessary.
You can also store & replenish yeast from the store so you won’t have to buy more. Being really cheap myself, I used to do this all the time. Nowadays, I sometimes use a gluten-free substitute like potato or rice flour that of course won’t rise but at least I get a good yeasty taste. Buckwheat flour is gluten free and makes wonderful pancakes, but mostly I stay away from all of it. Sigh.
Now to find a potato

Limit toys if need be rotate them.
Bleach in laundry for washing pillows to blankets for the family.
Wipe down those crips to high chairs they love to mouth them!

Update on our daughter: She had moved into an apartment. Then was able to purchase a house under construction with a closing date in mid March. Thankfully she closed the week before everything started shutting down. She's in a 1200 Sq ft 3 bed 2 bath home. She and her kitties are extremely happy! She is working from home as Blinn College has shut down for the time being. She is an Assistant Director of Digital Marketing for Blinn. She had transitioned from working at home for 6 years to an office and now... she's back at home (for the foreseeable future)!
Most of my crochet blankets go to the local Project Linus Chapter. All my great nieces and nephews have received several too. When I make them I usually don't have a size in mind. I use the amount of yarn I have to determine size too. Often my yarn is donated to our group!
Our community went to shelter-in-place last night. We are managing with no problem thankfully. I did not realize my "normal" lifestyle had a name: quarantine! I've not had to adjust my life much beyond having the hubs home and working.
Be well my friends

Cheri ~ What a nice house your daughter has found.
Rita ~ So glad you are feeling better today.
Kelly ~ Fingers crossed you will get more day care children during this time. Karen VA was so right about all the health care workers needing your service.
We went to Kroger at 7 AM today and I was able to get all the things on my list plus more. We wore disposable gloves and kept away from other shoppers. My only doubt was when I had to check out as the cashier was right there across the counter.

Thank you Barbara. I am starting to get some feedback on the mask. With feedback I decided to add the paper towel cover. One thing I noticed with a bigger version of the scarf is I can tuck my hair up into so that addresses Machka comment. The wires I believe are aluminum as is the tape so the virus can live on it but it also lives on the paper of the disposable masks that is why I added the paper layer. I also believe in spraying it with a essential oil mist that kills viruses. I also believe this mask could be used on children. Currently there are no masks for children. To appeal to them many fun fabric choices can be made. What I have showed you is my prototype. I am currently setting up a room in our home designated to making these. I hope to start making the ones I want to first give to family memember who are Doctors and nurses with use this if your other supplies run low or decide you want to give it a try and see what you think. I have put it out there for others to make it if they like it Go For IT!3

C-19 Tests in the USA:PCR tests (nasal swab), in use now, test only for the presence of the virus (tells you if you are infected.) This test is most valuable if it's positive. If it's positive, you are infected. If it's negative, it isn't a sure thing. You could have a negative test but still have C-19 infection. There are strict guidelines for being tested; it's not easy to get a test and most people will not be tested until the CDC & HHS are up to speed.
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/clinical-criteria.html
Antibody tests, or ELISA tests (blood test), are used to determine immunity after an infection (and in the later stages of infection). They are being developed, but as far as I know, not generally available in the USA yet. It isn't known how long a person will be immune after having the disease, because this is a novel (new) virus. It will probably take years to determine how long immunity lasts. Convalescent serum is being collected to help with development of antibody tests and even potential treatments, but the USA is woefully behind China and the UK, both of whom have made significant strides in this research area. One company making headway on this type of test in the USA is United Biomedical.

It's generally agreed that people are infectious for about 2-3 weeks after being exposed. They are most contagious in the first week, often when they have no symptoms (or very mild symptoms). After recuperating, there can be viral shedding for weeks, but despite this, people aren't usually very contagious at that point.
People on biologics and immune suppressant drugs may have different contagious and viral shedding periods because of their relative immunosuppression. Pregnant women might fall into this category as well.

Bicycle 🚲 shop- transportation for many here to farmers market are open that makes sense. Why is a golf course seen as not a pickup delivery for food y rest of it shut down like the gyms? This is like the cigarette bans in certain areas but allows cigars.3 -

Karen - thank you!! Great info
Cheri - your daughter's house is so cute! And the kitties look right at home.
TP update - my walking buddy said they just got a delivery of TP from Walmart, dropped off at the door. They had to buy a quantity to get free shipping. And while we were walking a few minutes ago, we met another neighbor coming back from shopping at Grocery Outlet. She said there was hardly anyone in the store. Lots of TP but no paper towels. My girlfriend who lives north of Seattle emailed me today she went to a Costco up there mid-afternoon, TP piled to the ceiling, parking lot half empty.
I might start changing my shopping times from early morning to after lunch.
Hopefully some of the hoarders are running out of room.

Did Cathe Drill Max DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do Barry’s Bootcamp Upper and Lower Body DVD’s. These are new ones
Amber – glad your order was cancelled. Thanks for the South video. I’m a bit surprised that they didn’t make mention of NASCAR being cancelled. The part I liked the best was about the mass on tv and the guy sprayed a bottle of perfume around the house so he felt like he was really there.
Annie DE – thanks for telling me about the lockdown. I wonder if this affects Denise or not?
M – oh, that cat posting is so true!
KJ – I just texted Denise to ask her how that lockdown is affecting her and Pete. Do they consider tug boat workers essential? It makes total sense that you watch only children of essential workers. I’m guessing that you got some new kiddos
Gotta run to WalMart. Having Jess here (while I love having her here) is increasing our food needs. What I mean is that I’m used to buying food etc for two. There are just some things that I’m running out of (like hot dog rolls) that I wouldn’t have had it just been the two of us. She doesn’t like the hot dog rolls frozen. Well, THAT’S just too bad. If she doesn’t like it frozen (and defrosted), then she can just do without. I WILL NOT go to the store just to get fresh bread. NO WAY.
Went to WalMart. Store pretty empty. You know, they say they are closing early so they can restock. What are they restocking? The shelves are still pretty empty. And I think most people are finished hoarding, they realize there will still be food. You don’t have to buy 15 of a certain item. Just got what I needed from there. Also, more and more stores are putting limits on how many of a certain item you can buy. But I didn't see anything in WM about that. I'll probably need to go this Friday after the soup kitchen to pick up a prescription.
Went to the bank with Vince. Oh, to get out of the house!
On the way out of WalMart is took some of their wipes. Can they get any smaller? Anyway, I was going to buy gas but didn’t since we need to go to SC this weekend. We’ll just buy it in SC. So I used some of the wipes to wipe down my steering wheel, etc. You know what I did? There were 2 bottles of the Lysol concentrate. I had gotten some of the small packages of tissues at the dollar store the other day. What I’m thinking I can do is make up some of the concentrate, wet down the tissues, Keep them in a travel soap holder, and I’ll have wipes. Only thing is…I wonder if the tissues will start to dissolve? I guess I can try it with some of the tissues we have in the house and if they do start to get funny, I can always return the ones from the dollar store. If they do get funny, I'll get more paper towels and cut them. I’ll need to go get Colby an Easter card. I’d forgotten to get one last time I was there.
Anyone who is in “lockdown” or “stay at home”. How is this enforced?
I don’t remember who, but someone suggested I ask Jess to plan at least one meal/week. Well, to be honest, I almost don’t want to because I know the answer to “what do you want for dinner tonight”. The answer will be “I don’t know, why don’t we go to Olive Garden and get take out”. We have food at home, we don’t need to go out.
My goals for today were to vacuum the whole house and put out the rest of the ceramics. Both of which I did.
My permanent crown came in early so I’m going to the dentist tomorrow to get it
Katla – thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it doesn’t tell you which are open and which are closed due to the virus
Cheri – congrats to your daughter! Lovely home. I like any home that’s all on one level. Does she have a basement?
Amber – car dealerships??? You don’t need to buy a new car. However, the service areas, to me, are necessary. Liquor stores??? Like you NEED liquor . Realtors??? You really need to look at homes???

I have five beautiful sweet red peppers, so I am soaking some wild rice, will add it to some jasmine rice, sweet italian sausage, and marinara sauce, stuff the peppers with the mixture, and bake. Will sprinkle the peppers with parmesan cheese after cooking.
I've got a gluten-frozen veggie thing I bought by accident that the gluten people will have. My oldest son and I will make do with some other side veggie, although really, the pepper will have everything we need.
Much love.

Not well. Even though it is an order from the governor, there are so many exceptions, so a lot of people are still out. We are being very good today. I always think it's amazing when we go a day or two and not one of the five of us has gone out for anything, except to walk the dog or work in the yard.
Kate Brown (our governor) said that we would be charged with a fine ($1500) and possible jail time (30 days) if we are in violation, but I don't know that it will actually be enforced. Businesses which don't have a huge public facing operation (like construction, auto repair/service, etc) can be open as long as they have a social distancing policy and someone in the company appointed to oversee the policy. 10 houses are being constructed, as I type, at the end of our street, and they have been working continually. But they aren't right on top of each other, and yesterday, one of the workers had a face mask on, so they are being careful. When my husband took his car in for the estimate, the shop was using very careful social distancing protocols, for example.
For a contrasting example, one of our local burger shops was trying to abide by the take out only model, and when we went to pick something up, people were at the outside tables eating. Two days later, they are shut down. So someone is enforcing the policy.

If I recall correctly, your son is within walking distance of his work ... so he can walk.
And yes, it would be a very good idea to get tested if you can.3 -

Let him walk. If you can't do that and you are going to be at home, let him use your car, you won't be using it. Your granddaughter is more problematic. Her parents will have to find another caretaker for her.

I will meet one friend at 7 for a walk and another friend at 9:30. The streets in my neighborhood are so deserted and quiet that we can spread out across the street to keep far apart and still carry on a conversation. It appears that in our neighborhood many people are sheltering at home and not even going out to their yards.
Barbie in NW WA
We're definitely still out walking. It's contact with other people which is dangerous ... not going outside and getting fresh air.
But we're finding the same thing. The number of people still going outside to get some fresh air has diminished. In some ways, that's good because it means that we can walk and see very few people.
And there's no reason why you can't go out into your own yard. Our yard is slowly but surely being transformed into a veggie garden. We picked up several small strawberry plants yesterday, so if all goes well, come spring, we might have strawberries. Plus I noticed that my three raspberry bushes are huge compared to when we got them almost a year ago. They didn't produce any raspberries this past summer but maybe next.
One thing I'm looking forward to about working from home is that I might be able to spend some time in our garden in the middle of the day. DST ends very soon. which normally means that I no longer see our garden for several months. It's dark when I go to work and dark when I get home. But working from home means I can enjoy the outdoors and sunshine this winter!
As for sports, a bus friend and I were commenting on a golf course as we went past today. Of course the club house will be closed, but people could continue to play golf. Any time I've played, I've hardly seen my fellow competitors. We gather at the start of a hole (but maintain social distancing because there's a swinging club going on) and from there to the green I'm right in the middle of the fairway nudging my ball a few metres forward, and a few metres forward with random clubs while who ever is playing with me is rummaging around in the rough for their ball!!
And of course things like cycling, hiking, kayaking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, etc. etc. etc. can still take place.

Here in Texas there aren't basements. Attics over garages. Have to be very careful what ya store do to the heat levels.
We are under a shelter in place order. There are no roadblocks. No random checks. No travel papers. You just have to have a reasonable reason for being out and about. Our numbers of those with the virus raises each day. Hoping this will slow the spread!
