Wanted 10km but it was really humid. Since I don't count walking breaks, I ran out of road at 9.5km and didn't have the mental energy to go out for a 500 meter loop. Meh.janejellyroll wrote: »@PastorVincent I love bald eagles! I hope you have another spotting.
I agree -- if I HAD to choose one over the other, I would choose summer running over winter running. I did a February marathon in New Orleans a couple of years ago, but I was training in Minnesota and I don't know if I would do that again. I run through the winter, but doing the long runs marathon training calls for was very difficult.
Winter training all the way for me. I guess it's because we don't get really extreme winter weather over here, no deep snow or plunging temps. Summer is just one long long sufferfest though...4 -
So. Freaking. Hot. 80F / 80% humidity / 76F dew point / just a whisper of hot south wind.
Did 18 x 1:30/2:00 walk/run intervals. It ended up coming in at just over 5 miles. Foot felt pretty good, but still let me know it was still there.

Mid 60s F, breezy, and rainy today. Back felt as good as it has in a month, but was careful not to push too hard. Actually, was really tired so not pushing hard was easy.

Happy Hot Saturday!
No running to report - doing a 2 hour Hill Climb challenge tomorrow so I have to rest my legs.
Happy anniversary, both marital and MFP and love the pictures etc.
I don't mind summer running when I can get out early. We have this marvelous natural springs in Austin (Barton Springs Pool) that stays at about 70 degrees year round. We would go do our longer runs (Lol for me that is maybe 5-6 miles) and then meet back at the springs and jump in. Such an incredible recovery. There are people who have not missed a day of dipping/swimming in years, including winters. I am convinced the waters are magical and I come out younger. Wishful thinking? That is how I can handle hot summer runs. Unfortunately, Covid has gotten in the way and its currently closed as is our trail. Here is a a pics of my favorite place, with one of my fav people - my kid! Happy Saturday!7 -

Yeah, I mean if I did not live where temps fall below 0F (-18C) I might think about winter running differently.0 -

Exactly what I was thinking earlier.... I WAY prefer winter, but then the Costa del Sol doesn't exactly have hard winters...2 -
It's a horse apiece for me. Cold; snowy; hot; rainy; humid; dry -- I can usually find something to be unhappy about, but I try to find the positivity in still being able to run.5
-
I think I prefer running in the summer, as long as it isn’t in the middle of the day. I don’t really like all of the layers you have to wear in winter.
4 miles today as I start somewhat training for my half in September. Not super concerned because I know I can run the distance. I would like a decent time though, but I’m sure I won’t PR since it is the middle of summer. I can try my best to get there though!5 -

That is another thing. During the winter I need like 14 days to bundle up to run for an hour or 2 and then have 50 loads of wash to do to clean all those layers.
In the summer I am running as close to naked as modesty will allow!

Definitely anytime other than summer for me. Like others though we don't have extreme winters in So CA but summers can be pretty miserable like today 98F feels like 102F but the humidity is only 25%. I am hoping it will cool off a little, at least back into a more normal pattern in the next few weeks and by the time I can actually start running again.3

I was going to get up and do my long run this morning, but my friend wanted to play tennis again. So, I got up early to play tennis. The weather was much nicer today than it was on Wednesday...still fairly hot, but the humidity was way down and there was a breeze. I played singles tennis for almost 2 hours.
Then, I mowed the lawn this afternoon. It took me over 2.5 hours. It was in the low 80's, but the humidity was only 51% and the breeze continued, so it didn't feel too bad.
I did get a couple of boo boos. Something shot out from underneath the back of the lawn mower and hit my right calf. I looked and it had a small cut, but wasn't too bad, so kept going. I did say out loud, "That one hurt." I'm pretty sure my lawn mower took that as a challenge and said, "Hold my beer and watch this." About 3 steps later something bigger shot out and hit my left calf. It REALLY hurt. I looked down and blood was running into my shoe, so I had to stop, come to the house, clean myself up, and then go back to finish mowing. Both spots are swollen, like a pump knot. The left one is a lot worse. I'm wondering, from the medical people on here, and those who play doctor on MFP, should I run tomorrow if it is sore, or should I just ice it and rest it for a day? Pictures below. They aren't really gross and don't really show the extent of the knots. It's the best I could do.4 -

Yikes! I would keep an eye on them and make sure something isn't embedded in the wound. I imagine they will look worse tomorrow. I would definitely consider a rest day....2 -
@quilteryoyo I agree on making sure it is clean and that there are no foreign objects in that wound. If there are, grab some tweezers and an irrigation syringe to clean up well. Cover it and seal it off, changing the dressing at least daily and keep it very clean. If you feel fine running, just be sure it is covered well so that it doesn't get dirty while out.1
-
Ouch @quilteryoyo ! The extent of the bruising shows just how hard that impact was! I bet you may be too sore to run. You ever find out what it was? I agree with The Carnivore, check it for something imbedded. Maybe you can run/walk tomorrow. I can’t personally imagine a reason not to get out, other than the discomfort. Definitely ice it all you want. And are you up to date on your tetanus shot? Watch the edges for any graying or oddness, seek medical attention if you are ever concerned about it.3

Do all this, but I suggest you give it a rest day so the skin can bind over the hole.2 -
@quilteryoyo - Yikes! Those look sore! I agree with @Elise4270 and others, make sure there is nothing embedded in there and keep an eye out for infection. If you haven't had a tetanus shot for a long while I would definitely see about getting one.
Note - this is one of many reasons I stay far away from lawn mowers 😂2 -
Ouch, @quilteryoyo! I would take a day to make sure it is clean and to let it heal a bit. Maybe go out into your yard today to the area where it happened to see if you see anything on the ground that may have been the culprit.1
-
Thanks everyone. I did decide to take today as a rest day in order to let it heal a little. I iced it last night. I was expecting it to look a lot worse this morning, but it's about the same. As soon as it happened, I did come to the house and clean it up and put hydrogen peroxide on it. I didn't see anything embedded, but will keep an eye out for infection, for sure. I am pretty sure it was a rock. I was mowing along the edge of the driveway where there is gravel from pre-pavement driveway days.

The more important thing is to take a sledge hammer to that lawnmower to teach it not to try those tricks again.10 -

Sunny, upper 60s F and little wind today. Back popped during the night, so it was stiff today, but not particularly painful. Saw a gray squirrel, a rabbit, and a black chipmunk.

It was a fairly pleasant 71 degrees when I headed out this morning. Today’s plan was to run an 8K to get this weekend’s virtual badge for the Rock n Roll virtual series. Took me a minute and a half longer than my goal time, which isn’t too bad. Now, I just want to take a nap, but I’m mentoring this afternoon, so maybe I’ll have a second cup of coffee instead...4

Hi guys...Been gone a week with a trip to the beach. It's about 2.5 hrs drive from here.
Not going to lie, I was quite nervous about crowds etc. We managed to find a spot where not many people go as it is away from the "main" strip so that was good. Also made sure we had space around us. Glad we went, was much needed break from home and work - which was getting very stressful and overwhelming.
I did run a couple days there on the beach - about 4 miles each but it was very hard because the surf had created mounds, and incline, so it was like running hurdles lol. And slanted. And soft sand which is hard to walk in let alone run. The second run, I stopped half way and continued on the road as I could feel my hips starting to ache.
Today I did my long run. 10.68 miles. Started out at 75F with 66 dewpoint so it wasn't so bad, and I manged to keep a 10:30ish pace for 7 miles, then it really started to just get hot. Slowed down a little and took some walk breaks. Finished with 10.55 average pace, so not bad.
I'm not sure I will be able to catch up, I've missed too much! Likes and hugs, and kudos's to all and welcome to new people!

I'm not totally sure when I updated but I think Thursday before I left for the Adirondacks. It was an amazing trip! We summited three mountains during this hike - really more than that because there is one peak you have to climb over that is not a high peak (not over 4000 ft) and we had to double back and go over one of them twice. So we climbed Wright then Algonquin, then the smaller Boundary peak, then Iroquois. Then we backtracked over Boundary and Algonquin and descended down from there (we did not have to go over Wright again because it was off the main route a bit.
The hike was amazing. Probably my favorite so far.The views from each peak were incredible - you could see mountains in all directions. We had an exceptionally nice day to do it. Very hot at the bottom and in some of the closed in sections of the trail but the breeze at the summit was amazing. It actually got very windy up at the top our second time on Algonquin and we saw this amazing thing - a bird just hanging suspended in the wind for a little bit! It was crow and it looked fake to me at first because it was just still and coasting on the wind.
We started about 6 am and finished 10 hours later. The last couple of miles as usual seemed so very long. We were so excited to see the parking area and get in the car to go back to our hotel for a shower and food. It was a treat to not have to immediately drive back home and to have restaurants open to be able to get food.
The next morning I did my run about 7 am, hoping to get it done before the rains really came. I was tired but it went ok. But I did not beat the rain. We had brunch after that, poked around in a few stores, and then drove back home Saturday afternoon.
This morning I met up with a couple of friends who were doing a trail run. It was tough going with sore legs and I did a lot of walking up the hills. I also got terribly bitten up by deer flies during this one. I was surprised I didn't get bites on our hike, but I certainly made up for it today. My back and the back of my arms are just covered with bites. It was beautiful in the forest there though and I'm glad I got it done
Some pictures from my hike. The first pic is not great but that black thing in the middle of the pic is the crow that was hovering in the wind

That looks like a most excellent place to hike, @katharmonic0
