Dang, Allie,
I'm glad they're taking care of you, but what did they not fix on the first run?
Pip -
Yogi is just beautiful... happy birthday to your boy.
Heather -
Nellie is a cute one! My memory, however, says that you're not terribly fond of dogs? Could be wrong about that...
Some things I could talk about in front of people for 40 minutes:- Starting your own business (in Texas - every state is different)
- Self-publishing, and how to make it work on a shoestring
- Communication in general and specifically in small face-to-face groups
- Federal law on when you can be classified as a manager vs. an hourly employees and employees vs. contractors, and the legal precedents
- Writing grant applications
- Writing proposals in response to RFPs
- Writing fiction vs. non-fiction
Off to the showers,
Love y'all,
Later,

Lisa - .You are right, but it's not the dog itself that I'm not fond of. I think they require a huge amount of commitment and very much curtail your life. Plus I am not fond of the way most owners treat their dogs. A good dog is a well trained dog and I don't approve of the over indulgence most people give their pets. I admire a good working dog and I am not fond of barkers. Having said all that, I will have to grit my teeth around Nelly, not interfere, and I will probably fall in love with her.

What kind of dog is Nelly? She sure is cute!
Carol in GA0 -
I texted my son for reliable information.
He says she is an Australian Labradoodle and she is 10 weeks old. She certainly is cute.
The grandchildren will be going back to school on Monday.

(((Allie:))) I hope they will get things right with this surgery. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Heather: When we got our current dog, we signed up for an obedience class. It was a great way to begin training. The humans in that class learned how to teach their dogs to behave appropriately. Our pup, now an old dog, has been a much better companion because the class taught us how to teach him. I hope your son’s family is able to find good class for themselves & their new pup. Barbara Woodhouse was a marvelous English woman who taught people how to train their own dogs. I loved watching her show on public broadcasting. :flowerforyou:
I talked to the pharmacy where we get our medicines this morning. They will be administering CoVid vaccines, but they don’t know when there will be vaccines available. It is frustrating. :grumble:
I tripped and fell a few days ago, and broke one of my glasses lenses. I have been to the eye doctor and there are new lenses on order. I will be thrilled when I am able to see the small type once again.
Right now our weather is glorious. We have blue skies and fluffy clouds in the distance. It is beautiful. :flowerforyou:

Another Getting to Know You question ...
What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?
On what topic?
Machka in Oz
I could give an impromptu 40 minute presentation on a number of things as that’s what I did for years as a teacher. I often did off the cuff presentations on request for the various groups I lead, especially demos for my art group on requested topics.
However, as someone who has sat through innumerable long presentations, I prefer to go for several shorter more focused ones.
Heather: I love learning new things, and can tend towards butterfly tendencies, flitting from one thing to the next. However, last year I made the decision to have a depth year, and focus on developing and deepening my current knowledge areas, and stop my interminable search for novelty. I’m still learning new things every day.
I think my depth year may develop into a depth decade. 😂2 -

I agree with this. I don't like dogs that bark, jump on me, or lick me and unfortunately, most do all of those things. Plus, they are just too needy for me. No dogs for us either.

Hugs Allie, I pray that the docs will get in there, and make you feel better!

Michele - I agree with Heather, the water content in the burgers was the problem.

40 minute presentation without preparation..
Several different types of how to talks... best way to organize your kitchen, decluttering strategies, pretty much any high school math topic, how to write a good sermon, different strategies for losing weight and what has and hasn’t worked for me, teaching strategies to engage the students, my personal faith testimony, just to name a few.
If you really wanted it to be interesting and worth someone’s time to listen, it would be better if I had some prep time.

I have my students do 5 minute presentations. Then we have abundant discussion time if possible if the subject incites discussion (often but not always). I much prefer discussion, to long presentations most of the time.
I also have many things I've learned a bit and would prefer, for the most part, to delve into some I've started, and not been able to continue than, start a new one:
continuing-
acoustic guitar
learning Italian
my level is very vary basic in both and I quite enjoy both.
Otherwise, learning new cooking approaches continues to appeal to me.

Oh dear, Allie! You're really having a tough time now. Wishing you all the best.Another Getting to Know You question ...
What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

Machka in Oz
If I'm allowed to use my Powerpoint files, I could do dozens of 40-minute presentations on scientific writing, on wrangling a research article through peer review, on the publication process, and various other arcane topics - all at the drop of a hat.
I could also do my oral presentation on giving an oral presentation. It's world-famous (at least in Svalbard) because I model a lot of things one shouldn't do when lecturing. Unfortunately, this talk doesn't qualify because I would need a couple minutes prep time to skew-button my shirt, attach a stray piece of masking tape to one elbow, set my phone to start buzzing after a quarter hour, and fill my pocket with loose change to jingle as I lecture.THIS makes me laugh every.single.time.I.watch. it does make me wonder if voice activation products can account for differing accents/languages...hmmm (a little rough language, but funny)
Hilarious, Kelly! Your question about voice-activated products reminds me of when my husband and I were in the US and had a rental car. It had a system for connecting your cell phone to the car's speakers, operated through a bunch of voice commands like "Answer" and "Show number" and "Call back". Unfortunately the dulcet-toned female voice that inhabited the system didn't always understand my husband's English.
"Status" he said, and she simpered back "Signal or Battery?"
"Battery," he said, in his somewhat European English.
"I'm sorry, I don't understand," she cooed. "Please say 'Signal' or 'Battery'."
My husband took a deep breath: "Battery." (Somewhat louder this time.)
"I'm sorry, I don't understand," she cooed again. "Please say 'Signal' or 'Battery'."
"Badd-urry!" he tried, thinking back through the years and trying to replicate the accent of his classmates at the American School in Cairo.
"I'm sorry, I don't understand..."
This exchange was repeated several times. My husband grew increasingly frustrated and started casting aspersions on the female voice, but she was unimpressed.
Eventually, I took pity on him, exhumed the remnants of my own long-buried Midwestern accent, and said "Battery".
"Three hours remaining," said the dulcet-toned one.
Karen and Heather, speaking of Welsh, one of my favorite stories is the one about the mistranslated roadsign. The Swansea town council had composed an English text prohibiting heavy traffic and emailed it for translation to Welsh. On receiving the reply, the town council produced this sign:
...and Machka, things that have gone totally haywire in translation often make me laugh.

Grandmallie so sorry to hear0

Allie ... I am so very sorry you need more surgery? The pain in your chest ... did you tear some of the staples in your sternum? I will be praying along with everyone else that this surgery is swift and sure.
Makes me Laugh ... my younger son, my mom with her dry wit, the local police blotter (seriously, it's hysterical what people report), if I'm in the right mood ... just about anything.
40 Minute Presentation ... I am not an expert on anything. I have life experiences, but they're hardly worth making people sit through a 40 minute presentation. I think most attention spans are less than that. Always reminds me of my Grandfather who used to hold up his watch when the minister went over 20 minutes. If it couldn't be said in 20 minutes it wasn't worth saying ...
Heather ... the puppy is a cutie and yes, their lives will change with her presence.
Katla ...puppy training is not directed at the puppy ... the owners are the ones being trained!

Well i did walk a couple of times a day.. havd to keep stuff from building up2

Kim and Heather – it’s just strange that this batch of turkey breast had more water in it than any other batch that I’ve gotten. I thought of water, but the meat wasn’t frozen. It least not when I bought it. Well....it's over now.

Julie - I think cute is the correct word, I also find it touching that her roommate is obviously a caring person towards my Mom.
My Mom has the kindest heart, she never sees bad in anyone and trusts everyone. She could be take in advantage of very easily and she would not complain about anything. Her previous roommate moaned and hollered almost continuously, I heard her several times on calls with Mom and don’t know how she could stand it, but Mom tells me “oh she just sings to me”.
Lisa - I agree, I also wonder at what point do you just want her to enjoy life. I don’t know if I’m getting a bit jaded from working in a nursing home or what, no matter how well they are treated, no matter what we do to make their days brighter, most really aren’t happy and would rather go quickly than linger on not being at 100%. The flip side, of course, is some other health issues that could be much worse than she has now and still living a long life but suffering physically on top of the Alzheimer’s.
Machka - I think it would be interesting to be a beekeeper but my husband is deadly allergic so not a good mix.
I think if you begged me to get up in front of people and speak I could probably give a 40 minute presentation on what family means to me.
Pip- Happy Birthday to Yogi.
Katla - I need to study up on those signs for stroke and heart attack.
Flea - I think I would love hearing your topics.
Allie - I’m sorry to hear this. Hugs to you.
Michele - Mom’s sneaking around didn’t bother me at all! I thought it was funny and cute. My brother was not happy with my reaction when I laughed as he told me.
Heather - the commitment of a dog is what keeps holding me back. Nelly sure is cute.
Terri - maybe I need to have one of those in depth years. I have a lot of unfinished projects.
Beth - I love small town police logs. I miss my small hometown’s police force. They don’t even exist now, just the RCMP and not such funny little incidents more serious crimes. My cousin’s hardware store was broken into last night, they drilled the deadbolt out. Thousands stolen.
I left work at 1230 today, I just couldn’t handle the back pain anymore. I had a little nap and will soon go take a hot bath.
I am hoping that a day of rest tomorrow, on top of today, I’ll be better on Sunday.

Tracey - so sorry to hear what happened to your cousin.

Tracey: I hope you’re feeling better by now and have had good rest.
Dr Katie: I am a retired 8th grade Social Studies teacher. I taught US History, from the Revolutionary War through the Civil War and a bit more. We also did an economics unit. Luckily for me, I had a teaching colleague who helped me through the transition from elementary school to eighth grade social studies. I am still grateful to her for all of her help. :flowerforyou:
Kelly:    Thank you!!!
Allie: It is good to hear that you are walking a couple of times a day. Sending good thoughts. I hope your doctors are able to help you return to good health and a happy life.

Saturday
We had a little bit of an adventure today.
We drove up to Mt Field National Park, 90 km away - nearly a 2-hour drive on Tasmanian roads.
https://parks.tas.gov.au/explore-our-parks/mount-field-national-park
We parked, unloaded the bicycles and cycled up to the next town up the road, 13 and a bit km away. UP to the next town and into the wind. It was a struggle for out of shape legs. When we got to the town, we headed to the grocery store hoping for a cold drink and ice cream bar, but it was closed. Oh well. Fortunately the return trip was more or less downhill and we got back to the visitor's centre in time to get that cold drink and ice cream bar!
And then we did a walk up to one of the attractions ... a pretty waterfall.
