Less Alcohol - MAY 2021 - One Day At A Time

@chocolate_owl sending all the happiness and love I can. The comparing game for me has/is so hard to let go. I struggle with it on this tread too. I am proud of those that are further along in the AF journey than myself and have had to stop comparing others goals with the ones in my head. Once I was able to get past it (80% of the time I can). I keep moving forward. Check in when you want and your goals are yours alone. I will cheer with everyone else!
Last night yes I had 2 glasses of wine and 1.5 oz of whiskey. Must say it kicked my backside and this morning my body was like....what do you think you where doing??? But because I am a glutton for punishment I am considering finishing the bottle of wine I opened last night. Not sure yet Even if I do have a few drinks tonight I will/should reach my May goal which is more AF days than I had in April.
Jan 18 AF days
Feb 21 AF day
March 23 AF days
April 24 AF days
May so far 17 AF days
So if have a drink tonight and maybe one day next weekend I will still have met my May goal.
My weight the only thing that really helped me drop 2lbs was me being sick and I am happy to report after nearly a 3 month battle I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Today is the first day my throat is only mildly irritated.
So I had the sinus infection for the entire month of March..Round of antibiotics, then 6 days later the full blown yeast infection in my throat (who knew you could get one there??? kinda like babies and thrush) that left lots and lots of open sores in my throat and gums. Now I just have to watch acidic foods since those still hurt to swallow (this includes chocolate, who knew???)
Ok will be back later
btw my kombucha is coming along nicely6 -
My May Goals:
16-20 AF days per month.
Changing my goals as my schedule is changing, but sticking to the 16-20 AF days.
My daily check in:
Sunday May 16 - AF - I begin the Canada Post training tomorrow morning, for 3-4 weeks on top of my other jobs. Need to have a clear head.
Monday May 17 - AF
Tuesday May 18 - AF - I actually am enjoying getting up at 2:30am for my newest extra job. Definitely would not be able to have alcohol and feel well at 2:30.
Wednesday May 19 - AF - Planning on a couple of drinks on Friday eve, (just a 3 hour shift starting at noon on Saturday, my lightest day).
Thursday May 20 - AF - Said a teary goodbye to Canada Post, then had a very long day trying to catch up on other jobs. Up at 2:30 and didn't finally get home until 10pm. I really felt like having a nice drink, but didn't. Up to Kimberley in the morning for my favourite Foster Grant job. I want to be fresh.
Friday May 21 - 2 1/2 drinks, I knew that the rest of that 3rd drink would have put me over the top. Planned AF until next Thursday
Saturday My 22 - AF - I had an awesome day today, caught up with a few things that I was too busy for the last few weeks - died my roots, took off one hand of gel polish and painted those, went to work at the restaurant from 12-3 then went for a hike with a friend. If I got any good photos I will post them. Hit my 16 today : - )

@chocolate_owl I always enjoy your posts when you check in. Congrats on being 3 pounds from goal!!
@globalhiker you talk about body fat numbers, which calculator do you use? Do you have a link? I'm sure that I had quite a bit of muscle from carrying around the extra weight for 10 years, I wonder what my bf is.
@lmlmrn
What a vicious cycle with the antibiotics giving you a yeast infection!
So glad that you are turning the corner on this.
@Lilylady3k
So great that your hubby is going to join you for some AF days. This will make it much easier for you too : - )5 -
@chocolate_owl - Love that you are down 3 lbs! "I haven’t had as many AF days as planned, but my daily drink # has been acceptable, and my other goals aren’t being impeded, so I’m fine with it." This too is great!
Totally understand we each have our own goals. Mine are not AF forever either and I don't exactly make my 12-16 AF days per month and sometimes miss my 1-2 drink max ... but still a little less alcohol than in the past.
Tough determining exactly what does and doesn't work but do what feels right for you. No guilt. No judgement.
Thank you for sharing!5 -
@dawnbgethealthy - Yeah for a hike! Raining here so I'm still just cleaning my attic LOL and walking when I can get a break in the weather.
5 -
Just popping back in, after taking a little break. Just too much going to keep up here also. I am thinking about putting an App on my phone that will track my alcohol intake. Are there any good ones out there? Thank you.7
-
Oh dang....this is hard. Well I am not doing too well. Try again this week. Only drank once this week but I had 4 glasses of wine!!! Four! Felt awful the next day! Back on the wagon.9
-
@chocolate_owl I can relate to what you are saying and your weight loss progress is motivating me to push myself more, so thank you for this...!
Hi @sarah7591 great you plan to keep trying, please do.....for me it took many repeat attempts, but then progress begins to happen and it's all worth it! When I had gotten down to 4, I'd then start the following week with 3.5 ...and do a gradual decrease so my brain didn't really notice or complain and I'd try to drink water between the drinks to keep the thirst away.
When I started here, already a few years back...I was convinced I was the one in the worst shape, hands down. On a bad day, I would just not post. Over time, I became comfortable with the fact that everyone is on their own personal journey and on their own timeline and using their own method, and very non-judgmental too. So I had to quit comparing my progress to that of others. I realized these posts here are a sounding board for myself, for the purpose to help me, so it's good to do.
19 days AF/3 days non-AF/9 drinks total. It is what it is. Yesterday's planned 2 drinks became 3, well because the drink too a drink, right? I don't let myself feel bad over this but tell myself I will do better today and the days to come....

@dawnbgethealthy - the scale I have is called Weight Watchers by Conair Body Analysis Scale, got it at Bed Bath and Beyond, model WW390F. Cheap with a coupon and I like the look. No scale is perfect but it gives me the same results as my other Tanita scale that uses the same technology. I didn't need the wifi features and any other fancy smart-scale features.4

Late getting in here today.
Funny how life can grant you new opportunities. Yesterday morning I did something totally crazy. I signed up to be in our local art foundations, art show. WHAT? Yeah, nuts huh?
So since 10:00am Saturday I have been backing canvases and making art labels for my 8 art work pieces that I am submitting.
All that time in March when we were without cable TV and the internet I was up to my eye balls in paint. Well come to find out there is a market for my creations, who would have thunk?! LOL

@chocolate_owl sorry to hear your difficulties. As so many have already stated to you, this is your journey don't try to keep up with someone elses accountability.
I hope you will feel better about reading everyones posts, they really are written to try to help, not to disappoint.💜5 -
I am late to the party today
Was not AF last night had 1 wine and 2oz of whiskey with water. Now am back to my normal AF week.
@MissMay please tell me more about your art! I love working with acrylics and watercolor. I think my favorite brands are acrylic golden brand, either the heavy body or liquid, and on the water color I really like the quality of Daniel Smith. What do you paint? I tend to go more with landscapes, mandala's and just kinda getting into pouring but that has so many many variables6 -
@MissMay
Wow, what fabulous news about your 8 pieces being in an Art Show!!!
So great!
Wish that I knew how to throw glitter for you : - )4 -

Hi all! Amazing how quickly a week goes by- best of intentions to post, and the day gets away from me. At any rate, did much better this week drink-wise. The only day I had more than one was yesterday at my son’s grad party. That is if memory serves and I didn’t forget to log one of my drinks! Haha!
Hope everyone has a good week.7 -

There you are Dawn, I threw glitter on our Monday for all of us. . Happy Victoria Day
Thanks for the encouragement everyone. @lmlmrn I sent you a P.M. check your inbox please.
@womona so is this the end of the Son's celebration parties? You did well and look no hangovers! I agrees, maybe it is this moon phase, but last week flew past me as well.
Ok gang, I realize there is much temptation brewing(no pun intended) this week with the 3 day holiday around the corner. The kick off as many say for the Summer. Be the person this weekend that you would want to hangout with.
Last night I got out the cocktail shaker. My husband came running like a dog hearing someone shake the treat box. "What are you making" he asked? Hoping he could snag a sip of cocktail. When he saw my ingredients he remarked, "oh a mocktail....naw"
In a beautiful tall martini glass I made a chocolate coconut mocktail and savored every sip.7 -
Happy Monday and time to start the week with a bang, thanks @MissMay...!
Fellow artists please post your creations when you have time. This is exciting...
Today is my last day of Physical Therapy, so happy everything is now working with no pain....
And good night's sleep thanks to AF last night. Or the full moon? 20 AF days completed month-to-date.4 -

AF last night but did not sleep well, it was like the close the nose god's were in cahoots with the throat tickle fairy to keep me awake most of the night.....but I am getting better
@mholl15 your AF days are impressive when you see it all lined up
@MissMay have checked my P.M. thank you
@globalhiker congrats on being pain free and your last day of therapy
@dawnbgethealthy hey there is nothing wrong with having a day off! Enjoy the relaxing down time
Today I am hanging out around my home waiting for a call from a window replacement company. Seems somehow a bent lag bolt flew through the sky and hit our 2nd floor kitchen window and broke the outer pane. We have no idea how it could have happened other than maybe some kid had a sling shot (?) and shot it over our back fence, flew past all the evergreen tree branches, then hit the upper corner of our kitchen window just under the tresses. Not much of a plausible theory but that's all I got.7 -
@lmlmrn Thank you glad to hear you're starting to finally feel a little better! And that's such a freaky window accident!
@dawnbgethealthy Haha I'm 3 lbs from the goal of a "normal" BMI, but I'm still 30ish lbs from a weight I'm happy with. It's a journey, and it definitely helps breaking it down into small steps! Sounds like you're managing your jobs well and had a nice pampering day.
@Lilylady3k Thank you for the kind words Glad to hear your husband is trying to be AF with you, I hope it lasts long enough for him to make some real changes.
@globalhiker Looking forward to your weigh-in! I'm going to be pushing really hard to get three more lbs off before June 9th, when I go to my cousin's wedding and spend a few days completely off plan. Congrats on your last day of physical therapy!
@MissMay Congrats on your art show!
My nerd topic for the day: body fat % measurement. Some on MFP would tell you that everything but a DEXA scan is trash, and they're probably right if you care about being really precise. A home scale uses bioelectrical impedance, sending a signal up one leg and down the other to determine BF%, so how hydrated you are and how your fat is distributed (i.e. will overestimate if it's all in your hips, will underestimate if it's in your boobs) can affect the accuracy of the results. They can be good for getting a trend and a BF% range, but don't take them as some ultimate authority. Calipers that measure how many mm of fat you have at various places (then use an equation to get your BF%) are the most accurate "at-home" method, but you probably need help to reach some spots on your back, and you can't over- or under-pinch the area if you want accuracy. You can get a rough guesstimate by plugging in your measurements into a calculator, or you can Google body fat estimation charts and compare yourself to those. IMO, guesstimates are more than good enough unless you've got goals revolving around very low BF%.7 -
I worked only 4 hours today, and it will be a week before I do my one month Census job.
Going to get lots done in the garden over the next 7 days.
My Bearded Irises love when I leave their last year's leaves for mulch. They are beginning to bloom. I have them in 3 different places around my property, and they all bloom at different times : - )
My Pepper/Onion bed is uncovered, and I will work the organic matter in well. I don't plan to plant my peppers yet, still a bit chilly at nights.
And there was an onion under there, so I cut some of it for dinner : - )

Well we opened one of the expensive bottles of wine left from the anniversary party but it had gone bad. We suspect this of a number of the bottles. Opened it, let it breathe in case that would help cause it didn't smell right, took one test sip and poured down the sink. Red wine should not be brown! We did not attempt to open another this evening.
AF for both DH & I6 -
Last Tuesday of May........woot woot.
@dawnbgethealthy nice garden photos. Your stunted bearded iris are adorable. They must love getting the heat created from the side of your home, like a garden hot house.
@Lilylady3k isn't that the EXPENSIVE wine that the catering people gave you as credit? I would be ape s#it if I opened it to find it was nasty. They should have given you food vouchers instead. Happy to hear your DH is supporting you again with drinking less.
Fat percentages 🤤. Just another "thing" to follow, wonder about and in the end how many people are going to listen to a device about fat % if they won't listen to a doctor about it? These companies are making millions by creating items they say we need. Not to make us healthier, but to line their pockets with $.
@mholl15 NICE May streak going for you. 3 weeks , you must be feeling really good.
COME ON - let's hear some noise from those lurkers out there. @mainelylisa you must be back from vaca by now. Get in here.

Eww, I’ve never heard of wine going bad like that before! Gak! Of course it’s one of the expensive bottles! Grrr!3 -
Long day at work yesterday, but was AF! I was too tired to enjoy a nice glass of anything. Weight is down today so that’s a nice little win.
Ah, pondering ponderables- the best way to calculate body fat (you definitely need someone experienced to do the caliper method), the upcoming “summer drinking season” as Memorial Day approaches, how to keep our plants alive, how to fit the giant to do list in while maintaining a balance of work and home life..... I need a LOT more coffee for this!
