I had a great day today. Yoga started the pleasant feeling and the rest of the day was also pleasant. The fitness center requires a mask and that was fine with me. The yoga class has been together for years before the pandemic & is still welcoming. Afterward I shopped for antihistamines and found what we need. None of this is high drama, all of it is connecting with longtime friends.

Tracey – yes, we got individual stimulus checks. But we did have to pool the money for other things. At the time I was told that while we were using that money at the time for something else, eventually I would get the stimulus money into my account. I don’t have a problem waiting for it. I just felt that (and maybe I was wrong) I had to – in a sense – fight for it. Jess won’t be in Iowa so it doesn’t make sense for her to transfer her title there just for one year. Iowa can’t certify for North Carolina. For example, we don’t have an emissions. I don’t know if Iowa does or not. States vary in their requirements

Debbie – about finances, that’s me. When Bonnie went to the Carolina Vet Specialist and was diagnosed with cancer, we had no idea what tests would be needed and how much it would cost, so Vince asked if we could use some of my landscape money if we needed to. I immediately said “no problem, of course we could”. As it turns out, we didn’t need it, but I was willing if we did. It just comes down to the fact that Vince feels that the landscaping is an unnecessary expense and I don’t. Here’s a picture of the bushes as they are now. For 13 years Vince has been saying that the bushes on the left would come back, and they haven’t. If they haven’t in 13 years, what would lead me to think that they ever will? I was told last year that we just need to trim the bushes. That hasn’t been done. So if it’s going to be me who needs to trim, I want something I can take care of.
Jess called. Her car needs inspection and she can’t leave Iowa. Steve told me that he knows how to drive a standard so I’m suspecting that he and Vince will go out there, get the car, and probably drive it back.

I did the same thing- I offered to help pay for the vet bill for the cat we took in, didn't need to help either.
If something else comes up that is an emergency- no problem-
I need to start setting aside extra now because he wants me to pay for the water bill- he is sure that because of my little garden, our water bill will be $800-900. I don't think it will be that high- He reminded me again yesterday that I need to really watch how much water I use in my garden. We also have a small lawn that we keep watered along with my plants(raspberries, roses, etc). What ever- I will watch how much I use/not let it run extra because we are in a drought but that is my one hobby compared to all the things he spends money on that I think is excessive. He is working almost 3 times what he was before they lifted restrictions so I am not saying anything.
We HAD juniper bushes in our front yard- I hated them- they were full of bugs and the lawn anywhere near them died so I pruned them, with a CHAINSAW!!! Took them totally out. Husband is not the gardener/yard guy at all. He does mow the lawn but actually I enjoy doing that- to him it is a chore he complains about. Junipers are gone and I now have half wine barrels that have dwarf lemon or other things I actually like.

I covered 5 km mostly running! My calves were problematic in the last half, but a 5K event next week looks doable. Slowly. The Spitsbergen half-marathon was cancelled once again because of the pandemic. I had hoped to run it from home one more time, and was also hoping to get my daughter up here for the third time. She thoroughly enjoyed running up here, where the stark landscape soothes and refreshes an overworked mind. Neither of us will be here when the race was supposed to be run, but I think I'll challenge her to a virtual half-marathon. Her goal can be to finish in under 1 hour 45 minutes (she's one fast cookie!) and mine can be to finish. Period.

Well done on being ready to run/jog a half marathon! I did one a few years ago, but haven't run much since. I've signed up for a 5K which is next weekend. I'm hoping that one of the bigger events will be held in January 2022 again and I hope to run a 10K there again.

Well i have been awake for an hour ugh..
Just checked my income tax refund.I filed online and used Turbo tax and I was supposed to get 5202.00 back and I am only getting 3766.50 they shaved off almost 1400.00
Now im not trying to be petty or anything, but when your expecting one thing and get another its very disappointing..plus Turbo tax charged me 186.00 for my troubles..
Ok rant over.2 -
Machka - I do 5k about twice a week, or a bit less often, but very slowly. I love just trotting/shuffling along, watching the world and listening to 'Soul Music' on the BBC. I have done a timed Parkrun in the old days, but I don't enjoy it. My son was encouraging me, but it takes all the pleasure out of it for me. I am always next to last, just in front of the disabled at the back and I hate having to push myself against the clock. I don't think I will resume when it starts up again, unless my son comes along . In my age group I was around the 50 percentile. Of course, only the very fit are still doing it at my age!!!!! I was 70 then, now 71.
I just so love my normal gentle jog by the sea. I'm a bit fussy with the weather though. Wind is not good and it can really blow on the seafront. I love the early morning best, with a blue sky and a gentle breeze. Heaven.

For some reason, I like running into the wind, but I'm not keen on cycling into the wind. Today was a bit breezy so that was all right for me for a run.
When I was training for the half marathon, I was running at lunch 2-3 days a week plus a longer run on the weekends. I need to get back to that!
It's a bit difficult when I can't reliably plan things. I put things on the calendar ... but never know if it is going to happen or not.

Vicki Hooray for a normal work week. Would your management go for adding another, perhaps part time, position to build in some depth for those times when people have days off?

So sorry Barbara about the postponement. I remember the upset when my mum's triple bypass was postponed. I had taken the day off work (which not easy as a lecturer) and was on the train going down to Southampton when I got the text. I had even sent flowers. Such an upheaval!!! Morning, afternoon and evening, my dears,
Supposed to be a nice morning, cool but dry. Perfect to set up at the Farmers Market. Unfortunately, starting Monday and for the following ten days, here's the forecast. Thunderstorms every dang day that my daughter and her family will be here. So, I asked my daughter to make sure to bring rubber boots, and we'll be chucking the big kids outside anyway. Rain won't kill 'em. Well, the lightning could, I guess. We can bring them inside if there's lightning near.
In all reality, I've been gathering up things that will keep them occupied inside, puzzles and such things, and when it's not raining, there will be a lot of things to do outside. Also got some under-the-carport games, like yard Yahtzee, sidewalk chalk and bubble wands. Will look for more tomorrow.
I've been trying to get the camper ready for them to sleep out there, but my daughter has backed and filled and hemmed and hawed, and I finally figured out that she WANTS to sleep in the living room with her husband and kids. For her, that's part of coming home. So... OK. But she doesn't get to be cranky at 4 a.m. when I'm getting her dad's lunch ready to go to work, and dishes are clanking, and so on. It's a busy, noisy time in our day, and if she's determined to sleep within ten feet of that, then she has to put up with us living our lives the way we usually do. *sigh*. I hate feeling like I'm being rude, but we all make choices. Maybe if I'm noisy enough, she will decide the camper is a good idea!
My husband wants to take the son-in-law to work with him on one or two of these days, as he's a mechanic, too, and Corey's proud of what he does. I think it's a great idea. This is absolutely the busiest time of his year, so taking time off with them is just not an option, which my daughter knows--but she wanted time with her husband and us and the kids all together before Brian heads for Poland.
It's almost dawn - once it is, I'll be able to see well enough to move the canna lilies around to the car. If there's time, I might dig up the gladioli and get them in pots to take, as well. It will be a crapshoot as to what color they are.
They are, at the moment, ensconced in the place where I'm going to put my compost pile, and in an area that's hard to get the mower into, so out they go. The blinking things get three feet high and then fall over unless you stake them. If I were replanting them, I'd put them by a fence so I could throw a string on them once they get to a certain height... and if I can't sell them, that might be what I'll do.
Time to get a few things done,
Later,
Love,
Lisa

My husband planted azaleas across the front of our house when it was built 30+ yrs ago along with some shrubs. On one side of the front porch the plants thrived. On the other side the shrubs completely died and the azaleas look like pathetic twigs. I would love to have the dead plants totally removed and replaced but can only do so much at a time. I used my stimulus money to replace dying grass. I think you earned the money you worked so hard for and it should be used for your project. It looks to me like your dead shrub just needs to be dug up and the taller ones trimmed back.

we've had curfew since October or November non stop and most of the time most shops have been closed.
hard to buy clothes in past year or so.
I'm dragging today.
I have some major things to do plus paperwork bills. everything seems to be getting harder and harder.
apparently I don't have SMD at present. I have to get blood tested every 3 months and go to see specialist 1x a year at present. that's certainly better not to have but there is thus no explanation for great fatigue at present.
my old GP was great but retired. I tried a new one she was not fantastic. Tried a new guy this past week. he seemed ok. he recommended sleep apnea test and thyroid ultrasound again.my voice box is a bit large...1 -

I posted this last year ...
Things I've liked since being at home from the end of March ...
Being home all day with my husband. I've got a better understanding of how his day goes.
Spending time with Rhody, our cat, getting to know him and getting him settled into our home.
Being able to go outside to walk, run or cycle in daylight, despite the fact that the daylight hours are getting shorter.
Having the energy to exercise regularly.
Seeing more people outside exercising. 🙂
Being able to sleep at least half an hour more each night than I was.
Being able to go for a nap in the afternoon occasionally.
Not having to spend 9-10 hours a week commuting!!!
Spending my days with a 180° view of the bay and trees and outside instead of a wall.
Being in an environment that rarely gives me sore, itchy eyes, sore throat, cough, and the sneezes.
Being able to clean this and that.
Wearing casual, comfy clothes.
Not having as much stuff vying for my time.
More time to work on my two courses at uni.
Working remotely ... which might lead to continued remote work ... maybe ... hopefully!
Being able to attend church online.
Feeling much more relaxed and less stressed!
Just to name a few. 🙂
Of course, all that came to an end at the end of July 2020 when life returned to normal ... mostly.
However, the past few days at home have been a bit like last year this time and I have desperately needed that!!
I didn't want my husband to have a mild heart attack, but I am really glad that we found out his cardiovascular system has issues, and we can do things to improve his situation.
And I'm glad I've had a quiet week at home with him.

Really, though, I'm in Svalbard, where spring has advanced to the stage where the infrastructure maintenance people send a bulldozer up and down a valley here in town, clearing away excess snow. If they don't do that, there's a substantial risk of slush avalanches coming down the valley and wiping out a pedestrian footbridge nicknamed "The Pearly Gates". That happened most recently about 6-7 years ago (incidentally just the day after I had jogged over said bridge twice). The most devastating avalanche out of that valley was back in 1953. It killed three people, and demolished the hospital and several houses. So now they bulldoze a path for meltwater to flow down gradually as the snow melts rather than collecting behind ice dams. It's hard to tell from this image, but the vertical sides of the cleared path are higher than I am tall.
My friend Lillian, who is in charge of Longyearbyen's roads and infrastructure, says she would love to drive that bulldozer up and down the mountain. But she doesn't get to.

Barbara: I hope the situation for your nephew works out to his best advantage. A postponement can be a good thing. :flowerforyou:
Machka: The last book I read was set in a fictional town high in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The author is Robyn Carr. I have read and loved many of her books. As to running—only if being chased by a bad guy. :noway: In the past we rode bikes with our friends and covered 20 or 30 miles in a day. DH ‘s MS caused him to be unable to balance on a two-wheel bike, so we sold them and bought two terra-trykes. We did some twenty+ mile rides at first. As the health situation went along, we put the trykes on trainers in the garage and ride there. I use mine in the garage for exercise and DH’s tryke sits unridden. On nice days we go for long walks in the neighborhood. The dog and I walk, and DH rides his mobility scooter beside us. :ohwell:
SteppinD: Welcome to a great group. We are women, ages 50+. We live in many parts of the world and all speak English. You will be welcome here. Many of us have been here for several years.
Today is my husband’s birthday. He is now 74! We will look for pleasant ways to celebrate. Perhaps a special meal at home, or a fast-food lunch. Restaurants are not currently open for inside seating due to the pandemic.

Hi Gals,
Machka – 1920 – Washington DC
The place I live is close enough to a pass in a low mountain range that if there is a lot of fog at the ocean it will come through the pass and we will be fogged in. That’s how yesterday and today have been. The temp is in the low 50’s not bad, but with the breeze and dampness it feels so much colder.
Lisa – I am curious about the “farmers market” you are selling plants plus at, all of the ones in my area have both booth/spot fees and require a commitment of a number of months…. I looked into one a number of years ago and it was $150 per week…. That felt too high for me to feel sure I would make some profit.
Katla – happy birthday DH!
Penny – always glad to see the posting and so much about life in the far north. Could you go back to Svalbard for a visit? You seemed to have a nice group of friends there.
Barbara – ((((((Hugs)))))
I am learning to adjust my schedule to include one -two days a week to helping my mom, it is a complete re-vamp of my world it forces me to stick to a tighter schedule. – not all bad, just different… My god kids are loving it there is a 2 day a week window I am sitting in my car for 1 hour each way so we can have a nice long phone call. I may look into some books on tape to help with the drive.

Heading up to Sacramento in an hour(guys are still sleeping, I have been up for over an hour and a half). Getting together with our friend that we haven't seen in well over a year. The last time we saw him and his daughter was the day we all got off the cruise ship.(the people who got on the ship that day were the ones that were quarantined on it for so long- the Grand Princess). We won't be up there too long as he gets off work at 4 and my husband has to work at 2AM tomorrow. Son has to work too but not sure what time. We will do some shopping on the way up- amazing veggie/fruit stand that I love to stop at, the guys like the doughnut shop near there- we will shop with the daughter and just hang out a little with her. Not sure if she has had her shots yet or not- The dad has had both, husband and I have had both.
Found out last night that my nephew in Colorado has tested positive for the virus-I am not sure about my sister(we heard it from one of her other sons)- he said his mom is still planning on coming out here for the service for my dad, is refusing to get the shot or wear a mask- SO- mom is going to be calling her to tell her, sorry but if she wont protect herself and others around her, she can't come. He also said his mom and brother were planning on bringing their dogs and were planning on staying with mom- mom's dog almost died a few years ago because of my sister's dogs attacking her- Mari is a tiny little Yorkie and sister has pit bulls. I am glad I am not the one to tell her she can't come to her own father's service but it is just not safe- She is exposed to it now, if she gets it she will be the most contagious at the service. She has always acted like she has been treated so bad by others, wasn't wanted.....(no, she wasn't planned, no one plans on having a baby a few months after turning 15, but she was always wanted). I will call mom this evening to see how the call went. She was going to call last night but my other sister was at the house and the two sisters don't get along- my job was already planned to be the peace keeper between the two at the service. They really cant afford to drive all the way out here anyways but planned on coming. Lots of regrets on her part- her and dad didn't see eye to eye on most things.
I am sure I will get a call or message from my older sister- I will be nice but what mom wants, she gets and sister will just have to suck it up.
Ok, Time to get dressed- can't go to Sacramento in my night gown, will make another cup of tea to have while I wait for the guys to get ready. I am always the first one ready.
Have a wonderful Saturday ladies
Debbie
