Treadmill run before yoga this morning. On the home stretch with work deadlines!5 -
@Tramboman Yay on the golf going well. Hope the chafing and quads aren't too bad.
@WhatMeRunning Yay for lower humidity. When I used a chest strap, I always dampened mine when I put it on. I hope that is all it is.
@RunsOnEspresso Great running. Love "It's hard so you do it because to improve you need to do hard things." I'm not good at doing this. I want to improve without it being hard.
@sweetdaisy13 You are doing great and love the way you use your time during your children's practice to run.
Thank you @shanaber . I did have childhood asthma and my doctor now thinks I have exercised induced asthma. It doesn't happen all the time, so I forget to use my inhaler before heading out in the summer. Sorry about the hard runs, but yay for sticking with it. Hope the hamstring starts behaving better all the time.
Nice run @yirara . Does Coach Amy fuss if you don't meet her goal, or does she lower her expectations?
Beautiful morning there @Avidkeo . Glad you had a nice run and the winds died down.
I played doubles tennis this morning for nearly two hours - I'm counting that as XT, which was on the schedule for today. I also walked a mile on the treadmill for my streak.8 -

I managed to get a mile run this morning before the sky opened up and the lightning started. When I got up my weather app said 70°F and cloudy. It wasn't raining or stormy so I got ready and headed out. I had only gone about half a mile when it started to rain. It wasn't terribly windy, but I saw lightning so I decided to head on home and just do yoga. I was totally drenched by the time I got home. I don't love running in the rain,, but I can deal with it, but I am not going to run when it is lightning. It stormed the whole time I did yoga and lasted until after I got to work. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. I will certainly check the radar to see if anything is heading my way before I start out.

For once I have managed perfect timing - running injury and bad weather. It's so much easier to miss a run when it raining, freezing and blowing a gale outside. Now, as I'm healing, the weather seems to be improving - still cold and windy, but the rain has gone.
As part of my rehab I tried aqua jogging for the first time. Weird, but my legs and feet felt so loose and relaxed afterwards. I definitely prefer it to swimming lengths so will try and keep it in the weekly rotation.10 -

I’m not sure yet. There’s a confidence level that I’ll finish at the chosen time and it went up last night. But I don’t know whether she’ll give me harder intervals or tempo runs next week due to this 😬2 -

I think I *just* beat today's rain! Today's C25K was a 20 minute run with no walk breaks. I was a little nervous when I started but I did it and kept a reasonably steady pace throughout (turtle pace, but we can work on that later!) Once I got to 12-13 minutes I knew I was going to be able to finish it. My earbud battery died before I finished but since there was only one interval it didn't really matter - I knew what time it would be when 20 minutes were up. But I am going to be better about charging it from now on!6 -
Just a quick update:
Last night was 7k with the girls, it was challenging for me as usual, but OK.
Today I went out on a route that takes me through fields, dirt roads next to a mine. At one point there was standing water all across the muddy road, and it looked like some sort of gross mine runoff, but I had no choice but to try to jump it, getting both shoes completely submerged, and then I slipped and fortunately was able to fall towards dry land. I wasn't sure what was in the water but it didn't smell good... but as I went on, the smell got worse and I later realized it was a landfill. It was a windy day, so as soon as I was upwind from it, the air was much more pleasant. I wore my Decathlon trail shoes, and they seem good for muddy conditions. But I did rinse them off when I got home due to the mud seeming kinda trashy in places. They're out drying on the fence.
It was a beautiful day, but it's not letting me upload pictures right now.10 -
@kgirlhart Glad you were able to dodge the storms. Hope they have subsided today.
@ContraryMaryMary I hope you heal quickly. Glad the aqua jogging helped. Remind me again what your injury is. I have forgotten. Sorry.
Congratulations @penguinmama87 ! I remember that 20 minute run with no break being a hard mental barrier to overcome. You are doing great!
@polskagirl01 Landfill runoff sounds awful. Glad it was a beautiful day, you got upwind and that your trail shoes handled it well.2 -
6.5 miles this morning Quite a hot one, 75F dewpoint (falls into the very difficult category) But hit my monthly goal and negative split each mile so calling this a win.

Mostly cloudy, low 70s and humidity today. Saving grace was a nice breeze from the southwest. Got my chiropractic adjustment before I ran, so it was musculoskeletal pain free. Got my heart rate up to 178 and saw buttercups in bloom.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!

I arrived at our meet-up a little early so I had time for a warm-up walk this morning before our run. Reversed yesterday’s route for the exact same mileage. 64F and humid. We ran at 6:00 am this morning instead of our usual 5:00 am. It’s amazing the difference in the amount of traffic out and about with just the hour difference. Planning on a hike after work today. Need to add more weight to the backpack!
@SummerSkier – I was rotating between WFH and the office every two weeks. It was a pain to mask up anytime we left our desks to go to the restroom or anyplace or someone stopped by to chat. Our two teams came back to the office full time about 3 weeks ago (still 60% capacity) but now we don’t have to wear masks if we have been fully vaccinated. Feels very weird not to mask up. I hope you make the transition back smoothly. My first few days were rough mentally!
@quilteryoyo – I also want to improve but stay in my comfort zone – lol!
Congrats on making your goal early @Scott6255!
Do you have a special belt for the aqua jogging @ContraryMaryMary?
Congrats on your new running milestone @penguinmama87!

I was able to use what @RunsOnEspresso said about tempo runs yesterday as the mantra to keep me going on today's tempo run. Still sucked, but sucked less because it was good for me. And I made it without turning to jello!6 -

@ContraryMaryMary and @Tramboman - I don't know... I love to swim and swim laps in a competition pool. Aqua running felt really bizarre to me but I don't have a full size pool to swim in either. The aqua running definitely helped when I hurt my knee and couldn't actually run. @Teresa502 I have a belt like this that I can adjust the amount of floatation for my weight. It works ok, but better than the ones that have no adjustment - they are made for someone bigger than me and I just float and couldn't do the actual jogging.2 -

I probably dislike fresh water swimming due to the many widths we had to swim in PE. Put me in the Mediterranean, however, and it's a totally different story. I loved swimming in the Med.4 -

Updating several days. After the race last weekend, my legs were trashed. The trail was nice and very scenic but a lot more technical than I usually run. They are finally getting back to normalish but I was more sore than I have been in a while for a few days after.
Race report under the spoiler. I'll post a couple pictures later when I can get onto my phone.I drove up to the Possum Kingdom area the day before and checked into my airbnb and went to packet pickup. My cabin was only a mile and a half from the race site, so I hiked over on some of the trail that runs around the area. While it was a nice hike, I decided that I wouldn't want to do that after running over 8 miles, so I decided I would drive to the start the next morning. It was a nice pre-race shakeout though and easier on my legs than a run.
The next morning, the forecast had shifted dramatically and it was looking like we wouldn't see much real rain, which I was super grateful for. It ended up being pretty decent weather for the end of May, low 70's with some cloud cover and just a little mist a few times. As I had coffee and breakfast I could hear the start of one of the longer distances happening on the other side of the lake from my patio. I drove over, got parked, bathroom, warm-up, etc. I love the excitement of race day!
The first mile or so had a fair amount of sand but after that we got into the rocky, hilly portions of the trail. It was quite scenic and there were several spots along the trail where you could see out over the lake. I purposefully kept the pace fairly slow early on knowing the course would be challenging. I ended up running most of the race and walking when the uphills got really steep or when the downhills looked too chossy and I was worried about falling on my face. That system worked pretty well. I actually didn't feel too tired coming into the finish despite my worries of being undertrained.
Also, I switched up my fuel. After the stomach issue during my HM, I was worried about the blox so I packed a ziploc baggie of gummy bears, about the same calorie amount as I would have eaten in blox. It worked great. Because each bear has fewer calories than a blox I could take one here and there over a longer distance and I didn't need to top it off with a bunch of water. I could sip a little more frequently but smaller amounts. I think it helped keep my blood sugar a bit more level rather than spikes and valleys and not having the liquid sloshing in my stomach was nice. It takes up more space for sure, but since I felt so much better, I'm going to stick to that for a while and see how it works. I won't need it for most of the summer because I cut my distance big time during the worst of the heat.
I hung out for a bit to cheer on some of the ultra runners then headed back to the airbnb for lunch and some lazy TV time. I was glad I drove. I definitely would not have wanted to do the 1.5 mile hike back.8 -
My May goal is just to keep on chooglin’ - so far so good - living with my mom temporarily and hoping she improves enough to be safely able to keep living independently. I am not getting any time for sleep, but managed to get in at least some sort of run every planned run day except for one, when I was just too tired and walked instead. What we are doing is tucking her in bed and heading out super early before she wakes up. It’s been nice running early mornings as far as that goes since it’s brutally hot by 10 am.
Fortunately WC Johnson is halfway between my home and hers. So it’s a good place to run on the way home to feed my cat, get groceries (did I mention her fridge died on the day she came home from the hospital and we are all living out of a dorm room fridge?). Nobody delivers that far out in the country, including Best Buy, which is the only company that would deliver a new fridge before two weeks from now! So, no fridge for two weeks, no grocery delivery, no restaurant delivery, and she can’t be left alone for me to go shop. It’s like camping in the wilds of Nebraska! Sorry Nebraska!
There’s a trail at WC Johnson which was completely overgrown the last time we ran it. Someone has been out with a chainsaw clearing fallen trees and such and it’s very pleasant now, about a mile along the river and then it hooks up with our usual wetland loop.10 -
@rheddmobile That's a really pretty trail! It sounds hard to be balancing care for your mom and your own life. And not having a fridge is HARD! Hang in there.1

Great race report and sounds like you did a good job managing it @martaindale!
Continued prayers for your mom @rheddmobile.2 -

@quilteryoyo, my ankle is grumbling because I ran too long in worn out shoes (well, I think that’s what happened). Coming right now - in fact I’m about to head out for a 45 minute trot around the neighbourhood.
Yes @Teresa502, as @shanaber says, you wear a belt as your feet don’t touch the bottom. I did wonder why everyone else had the shoulders out of the water and I was up to my chin. Turns out I’m not very bouyant and the instructor recommended I use a different belt next time.
Like @Tramboman i find swimming lengths incredibly boring (ooh look, there’s that sticking plaster/hair tie again!) and aqua jogging has the potential to be the same but I did a class, so we had someone shouting at us while we did different drills.
I can see the drills will be good for my knee lift while running (no more Nana shuffle) and the resistance of the water felt really nice - a bit like a massage.
Nice race @martaindale , sounds like you paced it perfectly.
Thinking of you @rheddmobile - sounds very difficult for you just now. Hopefully you find a good solution for you and your mother soon.2 -
I got the girls up at 11:15 last night to see the blood moon. The 9 year old, who was chatting to me and stayed awake for a good 15 minutes afterwards has no recollection of getting up and going outside in the freezing night. The 7 year old who pretty much just cuddled into me after saying “ooh” and then went straight back to sleep was raving about it this morning - “it looked amazing, it was so orangey-red. I looked just like Mars but you can’t see Mars from Earth...”
Kids huh?8 -
@Teresa502 how are you weighting your backpack for training? What weight are you working up to? You'll have overnight camping gear? One of my friends is starting to talk about camping for some of our hikes and I'm a little terrified of the amount of gear. Not as much for the weight as for the price, lol. Nice 6 am run and hope you had a good hike.
@shanaber I kind of love lap swimming too. It's sort of relaxing in its monotony maybe. Especially outdoor pools in the evening. Which I haven't done in ages.
@martaindale great job on your race. Sounds lovely and like you managed it well and enjoyed the experience.
@rheddmobile thinking of you and your mom in this challenging time. So sorry about the refrigerator situation adding to all of it. Lovely trail! Glad you can still get some running in, but get some sleep!
@skippygirlsmom that's so funny that the garbageman missed you. You're a local legend

I'm emerging from work craziness. Final exams graded, student's dissertation document finished, and mostly made it through my email backlog. I'm a little brain fried though and super tired. I planned a run with a friend after work and she texted that she needed a little more time so I relaxed on the couch - and immediately fell asleep. When she texted back I was all disoriented. In the end, she bailed on the run because it was probably going to start raining and there was a threat of thunderstorms all day/night. I decided I was now awake and dressed to run so I went out in the light rain to hopefully get a quick two-mile run in before it rained hard again. Nope! Totally got soaked. But it was actually nice running in the woods in the cool rain. I found myself smiling as I ran down a hill with the rain pouring down and splashing through the puddles.
I'm going to try not to go in to work tomorrow or Friday, and Monday is off for the Memorial Day holiday so I'm very excited for an extended break. I have a few things to get done so I may end up going in for a little bit tomorrow but I'm going to catch up on cleaning my house, then laze around, and use my brain as little as possible8 -
@Scott6255 Congrats on making your goal already and negative splits on a very humid day!

Glad you are getting a break from work @katharmonic ! Your rainy run sounds fun.
I had a really busy day - worked at daycare until 2:30. Stopped at mom's to take her oven apart to get the heating element out, then went to the shop to get a new one before it closed. Came home for less than an hour to take care of Tippy and eat dinner. Then went back to mom's, replaced the element, and we went to Wednesday night Bible study. Got home at 7:30 and did a mile on the treadmill while watching Jeopardy. That's all I felt I had time for. Hoping to get to bed before midnight so I can get up relatively early for my run tomorrow.

Hi! Newbie here. Feel free to add me because so far I only have one friend! I’m hoping to join the June challenge. The day before yesterday I hit a goal (4K! that’s a lot for me haha) and I wondered a bit if it was a fluke but I did it again today so it must be real 😅 Nice to meet you all! I’ll be searching for this group on Strava9

Ok so I was supposed to be reading everyones stuff by it life has been crazy. I have been getting out to run at least three times a week at about over a mile each but I am going slow and steady... All I expect from myself is to finish...
Looking forward, I want to up it for next month and was wondering how often I should be running.. for a newbie. Is three times a week good? Will everyday in the long run cause injury? Any pointers/lessons for the new?
