@shanaber I love that you were able to put into practice the exercises you heard from a podcast and that they seemed to help with the pain in your hamstring. I like listening to podcasts during a run or walk too. You just never know what great nuggets of wisdom will be dropped.
Got a 6.2 mile run in this morning. Temperature was a very comfortable 59F, and wind wasn't too bad at 13mph. Went out for just a recovery run, but threw in a stride or two to get my blood flowing.

Distance Log:
5/4 1.5 miles
5/8 1.7 miles
5/10 2.2 miles
Total: 5.4/20 miles
Today was in the 30s but after a few minutes I quit feeling cold. Saw two deer just walking down the street in front of me for a while. I see deer with some frequency wandering around, but it always tickles me to see them doing things like walking on the street instead of cross lots, which seems more natural. Also a good reminder to put down some stuff so they don't eat all my plants!
Monthly Question?
When you fall off the wagon, how do you recover?
- I should figure out an answer to this! The last time I quit running was because I got pregnant and was super tired and sick, and I didn't start again for....three years? Four? I can't even remember which baby it was for sure, so that tells you it's been a while! My hope is that it becomes such an ingrained habit that it would just feel so weird to not do it, so if I had to stop for a time I'd be itching to go back. TBH while it could be an injury or some other thing, the most likely thing would be that I would be tempted to quit if/when we had another baby. I'm hoping to establish a solid enough base that I can keep going, even if I have to modify or go easier than I would otherwise.
Vacation plans this summer/season?
- A group of families are going to spend a long weekend "glamping" (cabin with electricity and running water, not really roughing it) in the woods. There will be 36 kids, 11 and under (and three little bitty babies!). It's gonna be fun but super, super loud! We've been doing this trip for several years now. The first time we went we "only" had 19 kids.
What is your favorite non-running related hobby?
- Probably reading! I have actually been thinking about good audiobooks to listen to while I run. Probably mostly light fiction or something with a compelling story but that won't disrupt my focus too much. I will take any recommendations if any of you are audiobook fans. I can be interested in pretty much anything that isn't really explicit or gory.3 -
Thanks everyone for the well wishes. I am feeling a lot better today, but a long way from normal. Planning to take it easy again today and mostly do only what HAS to be done. I may try to take a walk later in the day.
@skippygirlsmom I know you are glad to have Skippy back home.
@shanaber Love the swag. The jacket does look nice. I liked last year's hoodie too.
Nice run @kgirlhart . I hate swallowing bugs and am glad there was a convenience store on your route.
@ContraryMaryMary Glad you had a nice, long run and didn't have to take a nap in the afternoon. Hope the ankle quits giving you problems. I love that you are able to give your old running shoes to such a great cause! Your new property sounds amazing. I'm sure you are going to enjoy it a lot.
Nice running @Scott6255 !
You're doing great @penguinmama87 !

Today starts another 6 weeks of base building. The down week was helpful apparently as I felt really strong on today's run.
@ContraryMaryMary - I am going to see if anyone is doing a shoe donation like that near me. My youngest is the king of sensory issues and can only keep his shoes on if they are quality high tops. I also have a 21 year old who was a toe walker and we were never able to stop him from that which means he developed deformed feet so that donation program is definitely the sort of thing I would love to donate my extra running shoes towards.5 -

In Memphis Fleet feet collects shoes for donation!2 -
I did manage to do a mile walk on the driveway today. I went slowly, 3.3 mph, and that was about my limit today. I'm feeling better, but it's taking some time to get my energy back. Hoping tomorrow will see more improvement.11
-
@shanaber I'm sure that's what they meant by the "just run" line but I interpreted it differently at first read. But I don't think much about running for performance anyway so the percentages mean little to me. I pretty much always "just run" to what I feel like.
Glad you are feeling better @quilteryoyo. Good to take it easy for a day and hopefully you'll be back to normal by tomorrow.

Just a treadmill warmup before strength training today. I also did the glute machine before that as I am trying to focus on glute strength. Then in strength training we did a ton of glutes and I was a little bit sorry. One thing I know is that my hip flexors are super tight which makes all the bridges and hip thrusts etc very challenging. Need to work on that!3 -

I usually take Mondays as rest days, but the forecast has thunderstorms tomorrow morning and rain on Wednesday so I decided to run today. I'll take tomorrow as a rest day and then play it by ear on Wednesday. Today's run was just over 5 miles. It was an uneventful but nice run.

Partly cloudy, low 40s F, and a breeze from the northwest today. Felt good to be back outside, but my legs weren't happy after dragging that golf cart around through the swamp yesterday.

@quilteryoyo – Sorry that nasty stomach bug got you. It took me almost a week for my tummy to be back to normal.
@skippygirlsmom – I know you are so happy to have Skip back for the summer. You two be careful out there on those trails!
Love that jacket @shanaber!
@ContraryMaryMary – I had a sprained ankle in December but kept running on it because it didn’t hurt while running. It would swell up rather larger afterwards but unless I bent it to the side at a certain angle, I didn’t feel any pain. I finally went to ortho about a month ago. Anyway, I’m writing all this to say that I had this swelling going on from December 26 up until about 3 weeks ago because I didn’t let it heal so if you can, get it checked out.
@penguinmama87 - Your “glamping” trip sounds like so much fun!
Yesterday was a cool, rainy day but it stopped in the afternoon and I was able to go hiking after work. The trails were draining well so it wasn’t muddy like I thought it might be. Met a friend for a run at 5:00 am this morning. It was cool at 43F. I put my Garmin on the charger last night and forgot to get it this morning but I used my Strava app to track my run instead. We all know it doesn’t count if we don’t track it right?

19.10 of 50 miles
I’m still doing 1 mile walk (with dogs and now Skip), 1 mile run and 1 mile intervals, but now I’m more like 1.25 run, .06 walk, .4 run, .06 walk to get in the rest and getting a full 1 of running if that makes sense.
Me too @quilteryoyo I forget how much she talks ha ha. Hope your feeling better.
@Teresa502 we will definitely be careful. I think I’m going to get on the trails on Saturday, a friend who is getting back into running asked if I would go with her. She not like me she gets scared to be out there alone.
@ContraryMaryMary I’ve learned a lot about ankles these past few months. If it’s swelling you should get it checked out, if you sprained it and cause some ligament stretching it’s best to let it heal up then to keep pissing it off (that’s my technical term) because you can keep having problems.
@summerSkier if a doctor tells me I can’t run I find another ha ha. I actually got up during an appointment with a back doctor because he went on and on about why I shouldn’t run and how I needed surgery etc. I went to PT for 3 weeks and never had another problem. I found a great orthopedic group with almost all runners and my physical therapist is a runner so they get it.
@AlphaHowls awesome streak!!!
Our local Fleet Feet takes donations too. The other day a local girl was looking for size 8 running shoes gently used for a group she’s working with, it’s with our downtown mission so they certainly can’t afford running shoes. I was so happy to donate a pair of Brooks Ghost I don’t like to run in, they had no lie, less than 25 miles on them.
Monthly Question?
When you fall off the wagon, how do you recover?
I fell way off the wagon with eating so I’m back to my 1200 calories a day, got on the scale the other day and I honestly sat in the bathroom crying. Now that Skip is home for the summer that will help and I’m working from home most the summer so I can cook easier than going out. As far as running when I fall off, I sign up for a race or challenge to get me moving.
Vacation plans this summer/season?
We had planned to go to Utah hiking, but we need to put that off. I want to make sure I’m 100% for long hikes and runs and climbing. We might go to Ohio to see my family and to Florida for the same reason.
What is your favorite non-running related hobby?
This is a hard one for me. I enjoy reading and working outside in the yard and hiking.
Races:
November 14 – Battleship 12K

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone. And, thanks for telling me how long it took to recover @Teresa502 . My tummy was rumbling and going on all night and it just doesn't feel real good again today. I was beginning the think something else was going on. You're doing great with your running and hiking.
@kgirlhart Nice planning and nice run. Uneventful is good.
You're doing great with your recovery @skippygirlsmom !

Not much to report about for today's run other than I ran it! Well, ran and walked to keep the HR effort easy overall, but that's going to require more time (and even more importantly more weight loss).
It looks like the closest Fleet Feet to me is over 3 hours away in Wichita, but I'll check some of the local shoe stores about donation programs.5 -
Thank you @quilteryoyo0

That's crazy - he would've put you through surgery! Great for him, but not for you! I'm so glad you walked away from that one and found some good doctors.
I biked today, and did my PT stretches/rolling, and gardening and then extra work with the lacrosse ball on some spots, just to try to stay on top of things. Feeling good, I think7 -
A little behind posting
May 1 8.1 miles/8.1 cum goal 200
May 2 9.12 miles/ 17.22 cum
May 3 3.1 miles/ 20.32 cum
May 4 9.06 mils/29.38 cum of 200 goal
May 5 5.01 miles
May 6 rest day
May 7 8.09 miles 42.48 cum of 200 goal (first week done)
May 8 6.01
May 9 5.03 (and may do a 2 mile sprint workout later weather cooperating) cum 53.52 for the month and 807 total ytd for the run the year challenge
May 9 turned into 7.1 total
May 10 turned into 11.34 total (don't ask but I was headed to a new PB for a 10K so I just did it.. )
May 11 4.2 in the mist. REST DAY!!! Total month to date 70.95 (probably a little behind to hit 200 but that's OK)
Really happy with my speed work. To put it in perspective I could probaby count on one hand the # of splits I had with a 9 in front last year much less 8's. This year my goal is 40% of my splits under 10 and I am approaching that with about 3.9% as of today. I seem to be able to increase the tempo enough to get better pace.
