Hey all.
Saturday and no long run today because it was my girls joint birthday party. My oldest turned 7 back in April, and my youngest turns 5 in just over a week.
So obligatory cake porn
Days like this I really miss @PastorVincent, though I know @TheMrWobbly will definitely appreciate it!
I'll do my long run tomorrow9 -
Wow! @Avidkeo that cake looks lovely π3

Checking in with 3 days left for May I am at 164 out of 200... If I was A HOWLING I would probably be able to do it, but not going to fret. Still a much better month than Feb and April.
I did go get a massage last weekend. Worst mistake ever. I was looking for gentle muscle probing but I got deep tissue which inflamed my back and sciatica apparently so much that by Wed I could not walk without shooting pains thru my hips and upper legs. Not nice. I did keep telling her lighter pressure the entire time but it is also tough to know what will help and what won't. Had to resort to Naproxen and Icing but that has helped ease things up enough to allow me to get some runs in without a lot of pain.
I love the cake and the smiling girls also. What a joy to see first thing in the morning!
I miss playing tennis. Wish you were closer quilter..
Back to work next month so I expect that my 2 a day runs are over until it cools off. It was starting to be too hot anyway to run during lunch. But I should get more active again with going in to the office as there is a lot of walking there and not just desk sitting. Parking lot is a good hoof away. And hopefully my walking buddy will return soon also so we can do our walk breaks 2x a day for 15 minutes. I miss our chats. The only thing which is strange and which I noticed when I dropped in last week is that the masks they give you are way too loose. Most of the folks I see are constantly pulling them up over their noses all the time. Well maybe masks won't be required much longer. I guess since they are loose they are not uncomfortable to wear full time. I tend to drink coffee at my desk so that is a habit I might have to change.

Rest day today for me. Happy running everyone and hope you all have a great weekend!4 -
@Avidkeo Thanks so much for the cake porn. It's such a happy looking cake and your girls are adorable! Happy Birthday to them!
@SummerSkier Sorry the massage hurt your back. I hope it feels better soon! We would definitely play tennis together if we lived closer! Hope going back to the workplace is a good experience for you.
Nice treadmill running @Tramboman ! Glad you got some rain too - if I recall you were like us and really was beginning to need some rain. We got a lot yesterday and today too. I don't have a rain gage though, so don't know how much. It's the first rain we've had all month, though, so was much needed.3 -

@Avidkeo that cake and those girls look very sweet.
@quilteryoy chatty doubles tennis sounds like a blast. I haven't played tennis in years and I played very little doubles but I always had so much fun when I did. I'd totally join your doubles game with @SummerSkier too!
@SummerSkier - a howling, or @AlphaHowls Either way, the miles would get done. But good job on what you did get in, and sorry about the massage making your back feel worse. I love a deep tissue massage but it can definitely be done badly and is sometimes not the right thing for pain. I get you though, it's hard to know what will end being the good kind of pain when you're getting it.

I squeaked out my goal of 100 miles for the month today, which is good because I probably won't run tomorrow or Monday. I intended to do a little more this morning but time got short with things I needed to do to get out of town this afternoon. It was a nice run with friends although a little chilly today! Fortunately the rain held off though.
I'm off to hike in the White Mountains of New Hampshire this weekend. The weather forecast dropped about 20 degrees in the past week so it's going to be a cool one up there. I had to dig up some of my winter gear again. Hope you all have a good weekend - long holiday weekend or not. I'll report back Monday.7 -
17 mile trail/mountain run, with 2,135 feet of Elevation. Legs were tired at the end and it was a very warm day, but I was carrying full race kit for my Ultra which is in 2 weeks.
Made a schoolboy error with the socks I wore and will opt for different ones on race day as they were rubbing a bit by the end. No blisters though, so all good.
May cumulative:
101.3/100 miles
11,588/10,000 feet of elevation5 -
@katharmonic Sounds like we need a tennis meet and greet with the tennis players on here. LOL Glad you met your goal and hope you enjoy your cool hiking weekend!
@AlphaHowls You continue to amaze me. How do you stay motivated to do a HM distance every day? I'm having trouble getting motivated to 8 miles this weekend...well, to be honest, I'm having trouble getting motivated to do any distance this weekend. Rain and a stuffy nose and having lots of other things that need to get done aren't helping.
Nice run @sweetdaisy13 ! Glad the socks didn't give you blisters.2 -
I will post more later but wanted to drop this followup article about the ultra runners in China from the LA Times. π’

Sort of skimmed posts, had work meetings today in another part of the country.
Thinking of you, @rheddmobile
@Avidkeo awesome cake!
During free time between meetings this afternoon, a coworker and I ran/hiked up a nearby mountain. Took a wrong turn early on which added a few km, so we ended with 21.3 km and 945 meters elevation. I wore high socks and think that's what made my calves decide to act up early on. It's not a problem area for me, and we hadn't gone that far, so it didn't make any sense to me. When I pushed the socks down, the calves eventually calmed down and then the cramping completely went away. Later I pulled the socks back up and it started again. So weird. But it was cold at the top and I pulled them up again and had no problems on the descent. Coworker is diabetic and started having issues almost at the summit, so I gave him my snacks (he'd already taken his gel, but it wasn't enough) and after a little while felt better and levels had returned to normal. The view at the top was just the inside of a cloud, but lower down there were some pretty views.
I give 2 thumbs up for the choice in meeting location this time! This was a big confidence builder for me. I'm signed up for a crazy 25k race in August, and am pretty sure a power-hike-up/jog-down strategy will be enough to do it within the 6-hour cutoff.6 -

@shanaber That's just so sad!
@AlphaHowls Thanks for the insight. I'm sort of glad to see that you don't depend on motivation to get you out the door. It is just something that you do every day. Do you run first thing every morning? I guess it would be easier if I had a good routine time to run. I don't. I work it in whenever I can, depending on other things being done that day.
@polskagirl01 Nice run. Glad it built up your confidence for your upcoming race. Also glad your calves are okay.
Love the pictures.
Nice running @pfeiferlindsey !
I wasn't feeling the best today. I think working more at daycare is exposing me to all of the germs that I've lost my immunity to over the last year. I'm hoping to get that back soon. Today, was runny nose and sore throat, with low energy. My plan called for an 8 mile long run today. I knew that wasn't going to happen. I did talk myself into a session on the treadmill and decided to do whatever I felt I should do once I got started. Even if it was just a mile walk. I felt pretty good after a half mile warm up walk, so decided to try running slow intervals. I ran/walked at 4.5/3.8 mph for 4/1 minutes. I was doing okay at 2 miles, so continued on. Around 2.75 miles, my breathing became more labored than it should, so I decided to quit at 3.0 miles. I probably could have gone on, but I think stopping when I did was the smart thing. Hopefully, I'll feel like doing more tomorrow.

Thanks guys and I meant to include @Tramboman in my shout out, sorry mate!
Went for long run today. 14.7k. It was damp and cool. Lovely running weather. One more run tomorrow for the month. I'm up to 144.7k so far. I think i was aiming for around 150? Either way I have one more run tomorrow so definitely going to smash it.
My next HM is at the end of June. I haven't been that excited about it, but now it's only 4 weeks away, I'm starting to look forward to it. As for my confidence about achieving my goal... That's so weather dependent I'm not really thinking about it. I'll worry about it in the day5 -
@avidkeo - that cake is amazing! I had to call my husband in to my office to show it to him π
@polskagirl01 - I have had issues with my calves like that too but it seems to be mostly if there is a tight band or when I have had on compression socks. I never run with them any longer but am fine with them on afterwards. The views from your hike are amazing and I would agree with it as a fantastic meeting location.
I got out for a pretty good run today. I set up a 2min run/40sec walk in my timer app and we went out while it was still cool (mid60's today). My hamstring has been doing pretty well but this afternoon it was really hurting when I was driving to the grocery and back. No run for me tomorrow but I will hopefully hit 90 miles on Monday. Not the 100 mile club but close...
So today I ran in honor of my mom who passed away unexpectedly 44 years ago today. She was just a couple of weeks shy of her 55th birthday and had a heart attack while living in a rural area of Spain. I started seriously making changes for my health (to lose weight and become stronger) when I was about 55 and ran my 1st HM when I was 57. I don't think I consciously thought about her age and health when I made the decision to become healthier. It is just one of those strange coincidences. She was a very active person growing up and as a young adult. Not so much once she became a mom though and she smoked most of her adult life. I can't believe I am now 10 years older than she was, running 5-6 miles at a time and so much healthier than I was before. I spent a lot of time on my run today thinking about her and wishing she were still here for so many reasons but I would love for her to see me so healthy, strong and running!10 -
What a great tribute to your mom @shanaber ! I know she would be happy to see how healthy and strong you are. You were so young when you lost her. That has to be so hard.3
-
Congrats to everyone who has (or will) reached their goals this month!
Nice long run @sweetdaisy13
@AlphaHowls you really are an inspiration (and quite a marvel at that) to so many!
Fantastic run/hike @polskagirl01
Hope you're feeling better today @quilteryoyo
@avidkeo I hope you have goid weather for your event.

Today I interrupted the forest predators looking for food as I plodded through on my long run. A hawk flew out of a branch I ran too close by, and as I went around a bend a coyote about 100 meters ahead jumped as he noticed me and ran ahead a bit along the trail before going off into the trees. I've also been seeing a large number of cardinals as I run, flitting all along the trails as I go by each day. Dozens of them. I'm actually happy with that, but I don't recall that many cardinals on these trails in years past.7 -

Partly cloudy, low 50s F, with a breeze from the northeast. Seemed like a good day to run hard, so I did. 5k PR; 1 mile PR; and 7k PR. Guess I'm ready for race season to start. The multiflora roses are in bloom and the smell is intoxicating - maybe that's what inspired me.
I do want to chime in about motivation. If (or when) you move from running being something you want to do to something you need to do, your whole perspective changes. I can weigh 243 pounds, or I can run. I don't think I can do both effectively. So I need to run 'cause I sure as *kitten* don't need or want to weigh 243 again...
@shanaber A wonderful tribute to your mom.

WOOHOO! I was not entirely sure I'd be able to get it done, but happy to say I knocked out 10 miles again today. This was a key point in training to see how my body handles double digits before I push further. I have a half on July 10 and my goal is to get to 12 before tapering down.

@WhatMeRunning Nice run and bonus wildlife sightings. They are fun, as long as they run the other way. LOL
@Tramboman NICE run! Three PR's! That's fantastic. Do you have a race scheduled anytime soon? And, I do agree with you on the motivation....running is the only way that I have found that I can lose weight and keep it off. So, I continue to do so. Some days are hard to get out the door though, at least for me.
Nice going @sweetdaisy13 !
Nice @pfeiferlindsey ! You can do it!
I am feeling better today, but decided to keep it as a "rest" day. I did a quick one mile walk on the treadmill. I'm hoping to get out tomorrow for a long run....maybe shoot for the 5 miles that the AF HM training plan called for this week, instead of Matt Fitzgerald's 8 miles.5 -

Wow @avidkeo β that cake is beautiful! Did you make the macaroons also?
Ouch @SummerSkier β hope the massage pains are fully gone.
Looking forward to your hiking report @katharmonic and congrats on meeting your monthly goal.
So sad @shanaber for all those who lost their lives in that race and scary for the survivors and rescuers. Sending you hugs for the loss of your mom β what an awesome way to honor her memory with your run.
Great job on all those PRs @Tramboman and congrats to everyone out there heading to the monthly finish line!
I hiked in the wind and rain yesterday but it was a shorter hike and the company was good so no complaints. This morning I went out and ran 9 miles. Weβre having an unusually cool weekend here and it was only 48F when I started my run. I need less than 3 miles to hit my goal this month - planning to knock that out in the morning.

Awesome job everyone on meeting your goals, or at least coming close.
Great tribute to your mom @shanaber! I'm sure you still think of her every day.
I did another HM this morning, and did a lot of stopping and slow running to take pictures and videos. I'm putting together a slideshow and video for my Mom's 80th birthday party next weekend. A bunch of people are coming from out of town for it, so it's going to be pretty special for her.
Even with all that I still managed to come in just a hair over 2 hours.

It's cool here too @Teresa502 ! As you can see, I chose the treadmill. You are doing great, and, I'm sure barring anything catastrophic, will meet your goal for the month.
Nice @Scott6255 ! You are pretty quick to come in under 2 hours with stopping and "slow" running. I'm hoping my first HM comes in around 3 hours and I'll be pushing it. Maybe some day I can be you. In case I miss it later, Happy Birthday to your mom. It sounds like you are helping to make her day special.3
