Julie-I have no age limit on when I must retire. Many people in my position work until 70 or beyond. You do get to a certain point where working longer gains you nothing in terms of retirement payments. I am several years away from that. It’s more a question of when I am ready to move on. I won’t be rich in retirement but I will be comfortable. I am very fortunate with our pension.

Machka-is the long service leave for all employers there or just your company? Here I work for the government. I get 5 weeks of vacation a year. I can keep three years accrual on the books. Why I have not used of the 15 weeks I am paid for at retirement. 15 days sick leave a year, accrued indefinitely. Can get paid out up to 240 hours upon retirement. We also get 14 paid holidays.

Relatively quiet day at work today. Have a meeting in the morning and in afternoon we have a graduation for some young ladies from one of our special programs-great way to end the week.

Going to kick back and watch some football in a few minutes Not my favorite teams, and it is just pre-season, but I do love football!

    Take care all,

Good Thursday (only took me all day to figure that one out)
I had a dentist appointment right at opening time for shop. Sis in law was there. She has been out the past two days as she had a colonoscopy on Tuesday. I have got to learn to stay home for longer when I have things done! Anyway, after appointment, I decided to go to Costco to get some things we needed and make one more stop before heading back to work. DH asked if there were problems with my teeth, I said nope. Later I told him I made a couple of stops. He didn't say anything....smart man since he has been on my **** list for a week!
    Work drama
I may have mentioned or maybe not that my son in law asked to talk to the bosses (DH and SIL) He asked them what they were planning on doing about the shop. He told them he can't take anything more on. Basically he handles almost everything in the back of the shop plus pick up and delivery. He also told them that I can't be the only one handling things at the front of the shop. SIL says, well we need to hire 2 more people (not really we need 3), then she walked away. My DH says, well change is necessary. REALLY??? I would like change...like 3 more employees or maybe even 4 with one or two already there gone! But then DH walked away. There was no discussion, no job postings, no sign on the door, nothing! No one has said anything else to him. Son in law is as burned out as I am. I will say that I expect the fireworks to happen sooner rather than later. Yes, I am some what privy to son in law's thoughts, but not all of his plans. I truly believe they are about to lose the only other person that works there and does what needs to be done. I believe that it is the best thing for son in law, but also know that my husband is good at holding a grudge. WELL, they brought this on themselves! If son in law leaves, I am really not sure how long we will be able to keep the doors open. The other mechanic can't possibly keep up with things and hasn't worked on a mower other than riders in years! I can't work on mowers and take care of the front also. If son in law does leave, then maybe I will get to see more of my family since he won't be with my DH 6 days a week already. This does put me in a bad position, but I have watched their attitudes run off several great workers over the years. Pray for me as this plays out.
    Vaccine
I tend to keep my opinions to this to myself. I believe that everyone has the right to make the best decision for themselves whether that is masks or vaccines. I don't trust our government or the pharmaceutical companies. I have gotten the flu vaccine for many years, but waited until it had been out for 5 or so years. At this point in my life, the vaccine scares me more than the disease. Three friends just tested positive for 19. One is vaccinated and felt poorly for about 4 days. One (not vaccinated) got really sick for over a week. He said worse flu ever. But other than lack of energy now, he is fine. He is in his mid 30's. Another friend in his upper 60s,not vaccinated, had a fever for a day along with not leaving the bathroom for 24 hours. He is now fine. I read, listen, and evaluate those things. I am not saying that at some point I won't get the vaccine, but am saying that at this point, the answer is no. I don't trust anyone in positions of power or money. Just my opinion.

Retirement- Man, part of me wishes I was. My DH would be so fricken bored though! Could we manage? Yes, financially isn't an issue. Health insurance would be the problem. I am seriously thinking of checking out concierge doctors and trying to find a hospital only type insurance. Right now my health insurance is $1800 per month. Yes, you read that right! I am basically healthy and have only spent about $2000 in out of pocket this year. My deductible is $7000 before insurance really helps out. Now, if we were a large company, my cost would go down. No, I don't pay it, work does, but that is still alot of money that the shop pays out for insurance for all of us. I reckon I will be working at someplace that offers insurance if things don't change for the better at work.

Julie There are lots of UV protective clothing options out there these days. I found several shirts and pants at sporting goods stores when we went to the Dominican Republic several years ago. Also, I know my dermatologist recommended Nicotinamide 500 mg non flush capsules as protection. They suggested buying on Amazon as it was much cheaper than at the stores. My happy place is the mountains preferably with water near by. Must be warm!

Bed time. Oops, no work done again. Oh well.

    TTYL,
Kylia in Ohio where if it isn't one thing it is another!

MACHKA nice that you are counting down and looking forward to retirement.

Retirement is too far away and too uncertain to count down! 67 is still 13 years away ... 70 is 16 years away ... and it could be further into the future than that.

I would love to retire but I don't see it happening any time soon.

That's a large part of why I got the Master's degree and am now working on learning more skills. I figure if I've still got a long way to go, I might as well try to get into an area or areas I like better than where I am now.

And at least I have long service leave to look forward to in the more immediate future.

MACHKA i'm not a big biker at all. I go maybe 20k MAXIMIM if a friend organises rarely but it's never my initiative and I often find it a bit long. HA HA HA. I have ton tons of hiking : most of the French Camino - not sure how much that is, maybe 600 or 700 km? and a 7 days on the Appalachian, and many short hikes or day hikes in the alps, and others... BUT my foot is no go, and my knee too. I could possibly try the Camino again with very short shops and portage, but my lower joints no longer leave it reasonable for that.

AND the issue Is that I need to avoid sun! There is lots of sun involved in any hiking and biking I've done...

Over here in Tassie, I cycle and avoid the sun probably 8 or 9 months of the year. I wear long legging and long sleeves and often vests or jackets over that. It's too cold here to cycle in just shorts and a jersey most of the time!

    Mid spring 2019 here ...
    l4bizqi04nrn.png

Here, some hotels have indoor gyms and pools. That might be an option.

but it sounds like you may have some future hikes or bikerides in France in store in your future.

Sadly, probably not. I'm really not sure my husband would be up to it. It would be expensive and complicated now.

I'm so glad we were able to do what we did when we did!

    Machka “CT scan”?
Thanks for mentioning about your lymph glands and the Pfizer vac, that explains my reaction. Olympic events? Sleeping, reading, and alphabetizing

Yes ... I've got a kidney stone in and cyst on my left kidney, and a cyst on my spleen (all left side stuff) ... and a lot of pain on the right side.

My kidney stones don't show up in ultrasounds but always do on CT scans. It's high up so it won't likely pass for a while.

We don't know what the right side pain is all about. Everything is testing normal.

    M in Oz

Right side pain can be gallstone/gallbladder check your symptoms see if it's a match. Or have they looked there?
    Can also be liver.

Ultrasound and CT scan show nothing wrong on the right side with gallbladder, liver or right kidney.

    Gallbladder was my guess.

So unless it's something with my gallbladder that doesn't show up in an ultrasound or CT ...

I also work for the government, and long service leave is something that is available at all levels of government, I believe (local, state and federal) ... after 10 years.

I'm not sure but I think we start accruing 6.5 days a year in the 7th year and then we can start accessing it in the 10th year ... so I guess that's almost 3 weeks come the 10th year. I think we can hang onto that or use it ... I don't think there's a time limit, but I could be wrong. Then we continue to get 6.5 days a year.

So starting in the 10th year, I would have:
    20 days annual leave
    10 days purchased leave
    12 days statutory holidays
26 days with my every other Friday off
    AND
6.5 days long service leave (plus 19.5 days sitting on the back burner for whenever)

74.5 days in total each year (plus 19.5 days sitting on the back burner for whenever)

I'm hanging in where I am now until I get to my 10th year!!

I also get quite a bit of sick leave and carer's leave ... all my husband's appointments come out of that.

It's one of my Fridays off today and I'm at home in my comfy armchair listening to light jazz while the wind howls outside. :)

Heather – I love the photo of you and DH in Sri Lanka. Delightful! :star:

Minicooper - I love the message, “Make Your Come Backs Stronger that your Setbacks.”

Vicki – Thanks for your kind words about the baby blanket. I unraveled the mess and that took a long time. I have begun a restart for the baby blanket. So far, so good.

Machka – I had my gall bladder removed a number of years ago. I was in my early fifties. I had pain issues that led up to the surgery. The pain it caused was excruciating. I had a gallstone—only one, but it was about the size of a robin’s egg. The surgery was a huge relief. If you are not experiencing pain, it may not be an issue for you at this time. :flowerforyou:

Our daughter called this evening and we had a grand conversation. It was a nice surprise. It is now late and hot. I am grateful for our air conditioner.

So far, it does not appear to be gallbladder.
And I am experiencing pain ... every day, same spot, same pattern for almost a month now. That's why I've been for tests.

Heather  the Sri Lanka smiles!
Kylia prayers said. That’s a whopper of a monthly health insurance bill, is that just for you?
Machka your long service leave (and Ginny’s 5 weeks) amaze me. 30 years at the same company gave me 4 wks paid vacation, 11 paid holidays, 13 paid sick days and no carryover options. While “nothing wrong” sounds good, you’re still in pain. What are the next diagnostic steps?

Going uphill today seemed to be marginally easier, not so short of breath. Could these step average increases really be making a difference?

KYLIA, Thank you. We dont have so much UV protection clothes here but there is some. I looked up that medication you said your dermatologist recommended. Maybe I misunderstood but I didn't see any link to sun protection.

    VACCINE
One plus of having the jab is that once done it's no longer an issue. My friends who hadn't gotten it and were waiting, were slightly torn when it became all but obligatory here. I had no thinking to do. It's VERY RESTFUL, relative to the many unjabbed people I know. If I mutate horribly, I mutate horribly. it's a done deal. (but I'm visualising positive side effects, like...improved concentration :D Why not? One friend, a high school philosophy teacher said 2x, as she was impelled to get it recently, that she's not SO worried now, because if it's a big disaster health-wise, since so many people will have been jabbed, there will also be masses of research to good chance of remedy towhatever comes up. I have never gotten the flu shot. The 50% chance protection didn't seem enough since I almost never get the flu. I don't have elders that I see all the time though, either. A 50 year old friend with elderly live parents does get the flu jab too.

    BARBARA good guess! ;)

As a positive side effect, several people here reported suffering from a mild cold before the vax and then feeling much better the day after. It's vaguely possible it might help against the common cold.
