Our son and daughter in law are getting ready for the birth of their second little boy this fall. We are planning to go to Virginia and stay with our grandson at home while they are having the baby at the hospital. I am in the process of knitting a new baby blanket for the new baby, but I have goofed it up twice so far. Luckily there is plenty of time to start over again.
Cheri – Your baby quilt is beautiful! What a lovely gift it will be for the new mom. You are inspiring me to create something appealing for our unborn grandson. I am planning to knit his baby blanket. I’ve already started—twice. Luckily I have a few months to get it done.

Barbara, I don't have to bike on the road, I wouldn't be comfortable with that. There is a commuter/recreation trail that I can get onto just a few blocks from home (residential streets) and spits me out just a few blocks from work (nice wide sidewalk!), so no road travel for this kid.
Cheri, that blanket is amazing! There is a way to not have the ends so sew in, it involves tying one colour around the other and then vice versa, but you have to be careful about how long your yarn is or you get "carry over". Or you can end up a bit short. And then, too, in a pattern like yours, you would be forever cutting and tying. Sewing in the ends seems a friendlier way to do it!
Kylia, I'm so sorry your hubby crashed your truck! Glad that the truck is the only injury tho, well, perhaps hubby's pride, but that is totally salvageable! lol
So, I'm hoping to post this photo, we'll see what happens. This little fellow got into our garage, we were out there too, so were able to escort it back out, hubby got it most of the way out and I was encouraging it to keep going to a safer spot farther away as we were preparing to move our car. It finally stopped and kind of turned around and sort of stood up, it took me a few seconds to realize what it was doing, finally realized it was hissing at me! It was so cute! It's only in a spoiler as it takes up too much space otherwise, I promise it's not scary! That's my index finger that it's hissing at.
It is way too late for me to still be up, so hugs to those needing them, congrats to those celebrating and welcome to the newbies!

Looks like we're poised and ready for Delta lockdowns here in Tassie. ( See more about the virus in our Group )
The virus has not arrived here yet but we're expecting it any day and when it does appear, we'll lock down.
I can hardly wait! I might start bringing stuff home.

Evelyn I was watering my plants last night and also got visited by a garter snake. It was about a foot long and as big around as my pinky. Snakes are not my husband's thing. He quickly moved to the backyard when I mentioned it! He told me to remove it. I said it rats things we dont want and is fine. I left it curled up under a plant. 😉
Allie So sorry! Been there, done that with my MIL and her"man" with both the property she owned inFL and the one we go to in KY. I had to walk away from going as it was so stressful. Now.....the KY farm is wonderful. I find it peaceful and refreshing. I hear your brother and understand it is a lot of work, but attitude goes a long way! Would a few day trips work with Talia versus the cabin?
Better get the day going. Stuffs to do before work. DH has a dr appointment first thing.
Have an awesome day!

Most of our cycling is on the road, with road bicycles.
In southern Tasmania (where we live) the roads are not very good. They are hilly, narrow and busy with lots of traffic and drivers that don't particularly like cyclists.
In northern Tasmania (where we visit sometimes) the roads are great! They are relatively flat and quiet.
A good portion of our training rides take place in a town south of us. It's reasonably flat and connects to a MUP. The MUP isn't the greatest (they really don't like to spend money on cycling infrastructure here!) but it is better than nothing and takes us to a couple towns further south.
But our 50 km rides have to meet the rules of Audax which means that we can't cycle in the same direction on the same piece of road more than once. There are other rules, but that one means we can't ride laps around a town. And there is such limited cycling infrastructure that I have to use the roads. It is quite a challenge to find reasonably flat, reasonably quiet roads.
I loved cycling on the road until I got to southern Tasmania!! I've covered thousands and thousands of kilometres on roads in Canada, Australia, UK, USA, several countries in Europe, Taiwan and Japan ... and southern Tasmania is one of the worst places I've cycled.
(I've cycled 170,776 km in the past 31 years, and logged every one of my km in a spreadsheet)
One day we'll move somewhere that will allow us to ride from home on the road again.
My favourite road of all the roads I've cycled ...

Whine. In light of the resurgence (up from average cases/day to an average of 11 cases/day the past 5 days) and arrival of the delta variant in our tiny county, Joe has asked me to consider carefully my activities. Yah. Thinking must forego indoor activities with known unvaccinated, like line dancing. Folks at T’ai Chi all claim to be vaccinated, as do most (?) at church. Hard choices. Again. :

Machka what’s a MUP?
Barbara, the Southern Oregon Coastie AHMOD
MUP is Multi-Use Path. Usually bicycle, walking, running but sometimes a horse-riding path as well.
The good ones are sealed/paved and wide enough so that bicycles and walkers/runners can share them comfortably. Less good are ones which are some sort of gravel and not very wide. It's difficult to ride on gravel.

The garden bed I've taken over and the first few flowers coming up. There are over 300 bulbs in that garden bed ... I hope for something interesting eventually.
My garden bed is along the hedge in the background.

I never mentioned this but when I was talking about our MS jerseys?, I started wearing them on our morning walks. I never wear them. I rarely wore them in Washington when we were riding outside everyday and they were just in a bag so I figured, why not.4

Tracy and Kyle are going on a Babymoon this weekend up to the Cape so i might end up watching Tal anyway..but we shall see3 -
Allie, Do you have caller ID? Can you not answer the phone when your brother calls and then delete the message he leaves or block him completely? He keeps upsetting you and you continue to talk to him expecting him to be different.
We have some good friends who are not vaccinated and we told them not to come visit us, not even outdoors

I am having a drainage project done in the back yard of a house we own, and used to live in, and are getting ready to sell. I assumed the work was being done properly and paid them promptly. My neighbor, a contractor, sent me a message the next day and asked me to come over to the house and discuss the project that had been done. The conversation resulted in me lodging a complaint and disputing the charges on my credit card. I apparently did a good job of documenting the inadequacies, because American Express refunded the entire charge and closed the case already. So now the company has not been paid a cent, which gives me a lot of leverage. My neighbor says this type of shoddy work is what gives contractors a bad name, and I agree. They will have to do it right now or not get paid. It's all been handled very calmly and politely, which is possible only because of the fact that they don't have my money. My neighbor has been advocating for me, and has a great deal of expertise in the subject. I am so very grateful. In addition, my neighbor Andrew was further inspired, after seeing the water pouring into my sump pump basin in the crawl space, to contact the county on my behalf (I have called them 3 times to no avail)...and they agreed to meet him right away at 11 this morning, to discuss the county's obligation to mitigate the water seeping through the poorly maintained and not sealed culvert and drainage conduits from a natural spring which is the main source of the water saturating the lot. The county will listen to Andrew because he is a man and he is calm and knowledgeable and he is a contractor. I feel so fortunate. The county officials have dismissed me 3 times and never responded in a timely fashion. They told me it is my responsibility and they have none...which I and all the other people who live on this stretch dispute...and finally I think Andrew may be able to get somewhere with them. Keep fingers crossed. I can't wait to sell the house but absolutely will not sell it with an undisclosed problem.

Got to check out the finer details of our babysitting on Thursday and Friday. The kids are going to a local day 'summer camp' for the week and we are scheduled to pick them up on Thursday, sleep at their place, and take them back there on Friday morning. We have got to get keys and find out pick up point etc. The parents are going to have a date night somewhere nice.
We have all pencilled in a date in early September for my elder son to visit. Hope it comes off!
Allie - I would be making my own arrangements to go somewhere lovely. This happens every time. Why would you expect anything different? You can find peace and beauty somewhere else. Nature's serenity is everywhere.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx
I made my second wedding dress- alterations would have cost more than the cost of my hand made dress if I had bought a store bought one and I got exactly what I wanted.
The most detailed thing I made in high school or since, really was a Gunne Sax dress- back in the late 70's when they were the rage. I also went to the Gunne Sax store and outlet in San Francisco, looking for dresses for a friend's wedding. Bought some amazing lace, trim, seconds(got a beautiful blue satin skirt part of a dress- made a black satin strapless top for it for my ten year class reunion.3 -

Crocheting is such a stress reliever for me. I learned in high school and never stopped! This one and several others will go to Project Linus.
Cheri

that is AMAZING!!!
I have tried to crochet a few times. last project was a baby blanket. Got most of it done but when it came to doing the border, I got frustrated and put it away. The baby that it was for is now 38yrs old!! Maybe one day I will try and crochet again
I learned to sew if 4th grade and that is something I still love to do. If I can loose these last 18 lbs, I will start sewing for myself a lot more. I did make my skirt for dad's service but shocked at the size pattern I had to use.
Debbie

Thanks Debbie! I learned to sew in 5th grade during Girl Scouts. I made my clothes all thru high school and college and then made for my kids when they were little. Oh my gosh I cannot even imagine what size pattern I'd need now! And the cost of patterns these days!!! Started quilting in the late 80s. So many quilts and crocheted afghans thru the years!!
Cheri
I was totally shocked when I looked at patterns a few months ago(first time in over 20yrs or so). I used to pay about $2 for them and now they are $20 or more.
I did find that Hobby Lobby puts the patterns on sale every few months- really cheap prices so I go through the book to see if there are any I really like. There is one design I am looking for but not in the book.
One trick I did learn/figure out this past year while sewing a LOT of masks(lost count over 250) is to go to the thrift store and buy sheets for fabric- I only get the super soft fabric as that is the most important thing for me. The fabric is also wider which is a bonus on some projects and the cost at this thrift store is really good- $3 for king size sets, less for smaller size sets or individual plus some on discount on top of that
. I started looking at sheets because of the designs I was hoping to find(super heros and princessses for kids masks).
The skirt I made for dad's service cost me less than $5 including the cost of the pattern- $2 for that plus less than $3 for the two sheet sets I bought.
I think I will be doing some sewing projects for Christmas gifts this year.
Debbie
Napa Valley Ca
I was dabbling in sewing a few years ago with the help of a friend who's an excellent sewer. but it became clear that sewing was more expensive than buying clothes. the pattern has a cost (of course you can reuse it, or make your own with newspaper, from online info), and also you need to buy decent quality cloth. She makes a lot of her own clothes, even coat with lining and fancy things, but it's a real passion for her. She converted a room to a sewing room when more bedrooms became available.
I have not tried making coats, etc. I prefer working with comfy fabric like cotton and flannel
One year I made western shirts for all the guys(back first Christmas with hubby #1). My dad still had his so mom is giving it back to me. The other guys I am sure don't have theirs. Former FIL would not fit his- he is half the size he was back then.
When I can loose this last 18 lbs, I have a beautiful knit that is super soft that I want to make a dress out of. I am looking for patterns now that I will like for it.
I have a few ideas in my head but can't find the patterns I want. I have never looked for the ones you print online- I need to look into that.2 -
Well, lots going on here! I’m back to school for long term m-w-f 3 days a week starting now in Kindergarten! Just got out of doctors and all my numbers were great from the bloodwork. I went in with DH and he got in trouble for his drinking and smoking by the doctor. She also talked about his depression and possibility of dementia beginning. He got a good scare from this appointment. I’m happy about that.
Now sitting in laundry mat after getting our prevnar-13 pneumonia shots. Then to lunch, Big Lots, Sam’s Club, get my hair cut and Walmart for groceries. Busy day! Then have to work tomorrow! If I’m up to it after the day today in town, do park chores.
Laundry is a break for now!

Had Zumba tonight. Nice to have our regular instructor back(not a fan of her sub we had last week- too advanced for me) BUT found out when we got there that we had to wear our mask the whole class. I have no trouble wearing it into and out of the building but I made sure I was at least 15 feet away the closest person. Our county is one of just two that are not mandatory inside so I was surprised to find the note on the door.
The building has no A/C, just open windows at the top(it is like a school gym/basketball court) and four medium size fans in the corners.
Debbie
Napa Valley,CA
here sports has been one of the rare indoor where people don't have to wear masks.
I imagine partly because it's not so easy to do sports with masks on (with heavy breathing).
In gyms you have to wear masks to move around but not while on machines and so on.
Now everyone has to have a "health pass" to go to gyms, and many other indoor shared spaces (museums, movies...): either proof of vaccination, or proof of negative test within past 3 days or proof of having had COVID within the past 6 months.
Yes, wearing a mask while heavy breathing(from exercising) along with asthma is a bit hard.
This mandatory mask is for everyone, no matter if you have proof of vaccination or not.
I would be totally fine wearing my mask going in and out of the gym and if I was getting closer than 10 feet from another student.

My dear brother, Greg, entered a residential hospice center on Sunday. He is comfortable and pain free now. His cirrhosis has reached a level where it affects brain function. Doesn't eat, move or talk much. End is close.
The facility and people are wonderful, just as they were nine short weeks ago when my DH was in their care. I now know more about the signs of end of life than I ever thought I would.
I am at peace and sleep remarkably well. But the grief pangs hit me very hard when i am bumbling about my home seeing the guys' things and pictures. Greg has lived with us almost two years and has definitely left his energy, influence and spirit in out home.
Now it's just me and one very spoiled cat facing our losses and keeping each other walking outside in the sun and taking therapeutic naps.
I can already feel the tide of compassion and virtual hugs this group is so noted for. Thank you in advance my friends. Got you in my pocket and in my heart.
Stay well.
