I ran 10.6 miles with a friend at 6:00 am this morning, stopped by my office to wipe down and change clothes, and then headed to a nearby town to meet up with @quilteryoyo. We met for the first time at a race last year and it was so good to see her again. I stopped at a park alongside the trail and hung up some signs to encourage her and then drove to the parking site. As soon as I parked, she texted to say she was at her turn around point and I began to walk up the trail to meet her since she was doing an out and back. I met her at her mile 10.5 and got to hang out with her until the finish. It was getting really hot by then and there was not a lot of shade on the last section of the her run. She did an awesome job and I’m sure she will post all the details for us later.
Ooh @Tramboman kayaking! I’ve only been once this year. Glad you all enjoyed it!
Hope your leg is feeling better in the morning @Scott6255.
Congrats on your HM @katharmonic. So thankful you’re friends were there for you.
@kgirlhart – When I was sent home to work last year, I bought a simple stand-up desk from Office Depot. It wasn’t very expensive, was basic and just what I needed and best of all it was delivered to my house. Easy to put together also.
Way to go @AlphaHowls! Congrats to you and your friends on your age group placement! That pace is awesome!
Love the pictures @martaindale – especially the jackrabbit!
Congratulations @polskagirl01! That was great that the aid station workers poured the water into your hands.8 -
As @Teresa502 said above, I did finish the HM and it was awesome to have her with me and push me to run (what little I did) and finish those last 2.5 miles. I will give a race report tomorrow. I wanted to today, but by the time I got home, showered, and ate a bite, it was time to leave again to go to a 50th anniversary party for a couple that were my neighbors for most of my youth up until about 3 years ago. Just wanted to let you all know that I DID IT!13
-
Congrats @quilteryoyo
😃💯💥🙌🏃♀️🏁1 -
@martaindale yes! This is the vest I'm keeping. It was more than I had budgeted but it's the only one that fits my needs and fits me 🤣3

Way to go!!!!!2 -
@AlphaHowls congrats on your AG place and a great HM.
@polskagirl01 way to tough out a hard HM fighting asthma. I know how hard that is...I too suffer from asthma, and I take my medicine religiously before every run.
@Teresa502 so great that you met up with @quilteryoyo and ran with her to support her for her 1st HM (even after running your own 10 miles).
And @quilteryoyo congrats on finishing your 1st HM!!
Oh and @Teresa502 to answer your question...my leg injury is just my annual shin splint / Achilles pain that I have just come to expect this time of year. It'll pass (eventually)5 -
Well done in your race @polskagirl01. Glad your new Asthma medication worked.
Re: aid stations running out of cups - many races are now becoming cupless, but that race takes it to a whole different level! Lol
I can't run and hold a cup of water, absolutely impossible. Nor do I like running holding a bottle in my hand. Wearing a running vest is now second nature to me and I always carry water when running a race longer than 10k.2 -
So much awesome running going on. No time to congratulate you all individually but I am very impressed with each of you.5

sweetdaisy13 wrote: »Re: aid stations running out of cups - many races are now becoming cupless, but that race takes it to a whole different level! Lol
I've been throwing them into "paper", and others thought the coating puts them in "plastic/metal" because they're similar to milk/juice cartons, but we were all wrong.

I can’t keep track of everyone I want to comment on, but just wanted to say how proud I am of everyone! @skippygirlsmom and @Teresa502 way to go with the acts of kindness! Everyone who raced, great racing! Congrats @quilteryoyo on your first Half!
@Tramboman Pretty sure that is an immature cottonmouth, they are crazy common on the Wolf this year.4 -

Yes you are right, they are paper on the outside but have a plastic coating on the inside.
The last few races I have done have been ultra distances and at these they never give out cup/bottles of water as they are cupless events, since you need to carry a minimum amount of fluid, you just top-up at the aid stations.
I'm unlikely to race a 10k for a long time (prefer longer distances) so don't know if these races still provide bottles of water. Most people only take a few sips of water anyway and throw the bottle to the side, so it's a waste.
I much prefer carrying my own and taking a sip as and when needed.4 -
Spending a few minutes before getting ready for church to start catching up on the thread. I'll try to finish this afternoon and get my race report written.
@Scott6255 I agree...the running community really is fantastic! Interesting that after 6 miles your leg quit hurting. I hope it heals soon.
@katharmonic Glad you got your 3.2 miles in on Friday....had to laugh at your motivation being your friend running 20 miles earlier. Also glad you chose to sleep in. Sleep is important to our health too!
@rheddmobile Sorry about the fridge issues. Hope you were able to take care of it quickly. I know parts can be hard to come by these days. Yikes on the snake. Glad you didn't step on it.
@Tramboman Glad you enjoyed kayaking. I would have liked to have seen a video of that too.

Today I got up early to check off the Guinness WR attempt 10k. It was hard, there was math carnage going on in my head over where to turn around, but I just kept going at what felt like a fast pace but actually was more like yesterday's HM pace, and got it done.
Most of the girls from running club were doing a women's 5k race in our city, which was going past where I was going to be for church. I wouldn't've had time to get to the start to run myself, but was able to take my crazy hair, giant glasses, percussion instruments and a sign (saying our club girls are the best) to cheer everyone on. It was great fun. Then we crossed the street afterwards and hit the food truck festival. I don't get Mexican or Spanish food very often here, so it was a delicious burrito and churros for me! (Yes, I'm making the calories work to stay on track.)11 -
@polskagirl01 way to support your teammates!
@WhatMeRunning you are such an overachiever
@Tramboman glad you are feeling better!
73F 90% humidity 0 wind for a mid September morning run is ridiculous. But finished my Guinness World Record Attempt 10K. Was 2 min/mi faster than yesterday. Originally wanted to be sub 8 min/mi, but that was a pipe dream as of late. Still, this was better than I expected when I woke up this morning.

9/8 5.49
9/10 4.51
9/13 5.73
9/19 3.06 - 5K race
I took off this past week due to a nasty cold (not covid, but still knocked me on my behind!) I had a 5K today I had signed up for this summer and I was hoping I'd be well enough in time to run it, and I was! Official results still pending, but per my Garmin my time was 33:15 and average pace was 10:52/mile, which is far and away the best I've ever done on a 5k. The course was a little bit short I think, but also very hilly. Long story short, I'm very happy with it.
Since I missed a week my goal is looking very lofty now - but I think I can still get to 70 miles.
Just caught up with reading and liking/hugging on the thread, too - nothing like checking the forums and having 140 notifications of new posts!9 -

I was feeling tired this morning and had a hard time getting out the door but I had committed to do the Guinness World Record 10k and what’s commitment without follow through eh? Turned out to be a beautiful morning with the temp around 69F. The sun had not made it over the mountains when I started so I didn’t think to take my sunglasses with me. I may have earned some extra squint lines around the eyes. Found some chestnuts and stopped to pick a couple up. They were big and shiny!
Way to go on your 5k race @penguinmama87!
Thanks for everyone's comments on me being able to encourage @quilteryoyo in person. As sweet and kind as she is, it was an easy decision. I wish we ALL could meet up IRL and run together one day!7 -
Great racing from so many people this weekend!
@quilteryoyo Congrats on your first HM!
@penguinmama87 Good job on your 5K PR, especially after being ill for a week!
@polskagirl01 Way to go! I am sorry to hear your asthma is continuing to be an issue. I hope you and your dr figure out a regimen for you that works. The water being poured into your hands at aid stations is hilarious! I would be there a while to get enough in my mouth and not just down the front of my shirt!
@WhatMeRunning @bradkcrew Reading back now I can see how my original reply was vague. You can absolutely run in a deficit and I did not intend to imply otherwise. I was still losing weight when I started running and didn’t adjust my calories because I had weight to lose/energy for my body to burn, I was only running 3 days a week and maybe 3 miles at a time doing c25k. As I got to goal weight, which also happened as I was starting to run closer to the distances @bradcrew is now, runs got hard. I adjusted to my calculated baseline TDEE and it was better for a while. Ultimately, I could tell I was still underfueling because I was so hungry at the end of the day and my “cheat day Saturdays” got super cheaty, which wasn’t normal for me. I ended up needing to add about 200 cals a day above that TDEE to maintain my weight and not be hangry. When you mentioned that your runs are hard from the first step, one of the first things to consider is whether you have the fuel for your body to be doing the activity. Other things to consider are whether you need more sleep, are you doing a warm-up, are you stretching and allowing your muscles to recover from previous activity, are you hydrated?
Re: carbs and their importance in your daily diet is going to vary from person to person. We have some runners in this group that are very low carb ( @T1DCarnivoreRunner comes to mind) and some that probably eat multitudes more carbs per day than I do. I don’t count macros, but I would say my diet seems to be pretty close to Mediterranean diet style meals with more complex carbs than straight up bread/sugar. I also have a little dessert at night, so there’s my baby sugar bump. This style of eating is what I figured out over the past several years works for me. I feel better eating like this. Your body and mine may very well not like the same foods. I get hypoglycemic so eating large carb/sugar boluses can send my blood sugar spiking and then I crash. My husband eats a ton of carbs and functions much better mentally and physically this way vs a low carb diet, which honestly made him a little depressed.
I hope that clarifies a little. You mentioned that you weren’t sure where you were with calories or where you needed to be. Sitting down and doing the math using the last couple of weeks of runs and food then looking at what you need with your weight loss/maintenance/gain goals will probably be more help than any specific diet/macro advice at this point.4 -
@martaindale I didn't get any impression from your prior post about not being able to run in a deficit. 😉 Sorry if my post made it seem that way. I was just posting to add additional thoughts to some past advice I had offered to @bradkcrew in another location in MFP. Your added advice and background is super great information, thanks for sharing all that!3

@katharmonic Sorry you were having an emotional day yesterday. It's great that you had friends show up to help you get through your HM distance for the month. Friends sure do help. Hope you are feeling better today.
@AlphaHowls Congratulations on a great race and your 2nd place AG finish! Congrats to A & E too!
@RunsOnEspresso Glad you found a vest that works for you...when it isn't killing you, of course.
@martaindale That looks like a really nice trail with some great scenery. Love the rabbit picture. Is it a Jack Rabbit. Looks bigger than the rabbits we have around here.
Nice running, as always @sweetdaisy13 ! I'll bet you'll be able to do 50K in that Ultra in November.
@polskagirl01 Sounds like a tough run with your asthma acting up. Congrats on pushing through and getting it done. Glad you realized the extra bib was about to fall off and kept it on for the charity. Also glad that you were able to make running the priority over the work conference.5 -
16 miles today. It was super humid since it stormed some places yesterday. Why do we never get the rain but have to deal with the after effects?! 😭🤣

63.38/95 miles completed for September
Today's plan was 8 miles in 1 hr 21 minutes at an average pace of 10:05. I had signed up for the Guinness World Record Virtual 10K today. So I ran 10K then stopped my watch and saved the run. Then started it again and ran 2 more miles. It worked out well and I was able to combine the two runs on the run with Hal app. I didn't try to race the 10K. My hip is feeling good when I am running, but I thought it was more important to go easy today than to worry about my pace for a Virtual race. I ran the 10K in 1 he 10 minutes with a pace of 11:16. My overall run ended up at 8.5 miles in 1 hr 36 minutes with an average pace of 11:20. As usual I ran a little slower and a little further than Hal suggested. I honestly miscalculated my turn around because I cannot do math and run at the same time. Hal still gave me 95% though so I feel really good about my training.
The run was nice. It wasn't as cool as it was last Sunday and I was a little worried it would be miserable because it was so hot yesterday, but I guess I got out early enough that it wasn't terribly hot yet. I saw a couple of dogs, but none that gave me any trouble. I did see a herd of goats. There is a creek that runs through town that has gotten really overgrown. We have a minimum security prison 7 miles outside of town and in the past they have hired crews of inmates to mow and weed eat and clear the brush. But because of Covid they haven't been able to do that. So they hired a company called Rent a Ruminate. They bring in a herd of goats and pen them in with electric fences and have goat herders who stay and watch over them 24 hours a day. When they get a patch cleared they move the herd and the fences. It's really kind of neat and the goats are doing an excellent job of clearing the creek bed. I stopped and took some pictures, but they aren't very good.
I didn't see Sunny the Donkey today. I don't know if he's been moved or if he was just inside where I couldn't see him. I haven't been down that street in the mornings lately because it is too dark. But all in all I had a great run today.

@Tramboman Glad your feeling better when running and are anticipating longer runs.
Nice walking @WhatMeRunning ! I'm sure there was nothing in the rules about walking it.
@polskagirl01 Nice run and great that you supported your fellow runners AND had Mexican food.
Nice run in those conditions @Scott6255 ! It's nice when you do better than expected.
Congrats on your PB @penguinmama87 ! That's awesome!
Awww. Thanks @Teresa502 ! What you said made my eyes water. I too wish we could all meet IRL and run. Wouldn't that be something! Great job getting out the door and getting your 10K done this morning. Chestnuts are cool looking.
Nice run @RunsOnEspresso ! That seems to happen a lot here too. If it's gonna be humid, at least give me the benefits of the rain.
@kgirlhart Nice running and glad Hal is happy with you. I love the name of the company that rents the goats. There used to be someone here who did that, but I haven't seen them along the roadway lately. They do do a great job. I was wondering about Sunny Donkey the other day. I hope he hasn't moved.5 -
Wow @kgirlhart those goats do a great job clearing that brush...it looks better than my front yard 😁
I'll bet Sunny was in the house watching football 🏈5 -
Started to write my race report a couple of hours ago, got really sleepy, so opted for a nap.
Like I said yesterday, I got my first HM under my belt! I'm very happy to have it done, but I think @Teresa502 was a bit generous when she said I did an awesome job. Very long race report under the spoiler. On Friday night, I got all of my clothes laid out and made a list of the things I needed to take that I couldn't lay out - like Gatorade, water, banana, etc. That took way longer than I expected that it would. It's a lot when you have to support yourself for a long run away from home.
I tried to get to bed early, but only managed a 10:30 lights out. That is early for me, but not as early as I had wanted. I had made plans to meet my friend, Neva, in the parking lot where I work at 7am on Saturday morning, so I had to get myself out of bed at 6 am. Seven hours sleep it was, which was a lot more than I had gotten the rest of the week.
Since the trail is an hour away, I decided to go ahead and eat my normal breakfast, consisting of an egg, a piece of toast, and some cheese...and a couple cups of coffee, of course. I knew it would have time to settle and would give me sustenance that I needed.
We got the parking lot where @Teresa502 had suggested I start at around 8. I ate a banana I had taken with me and then went into Ingles for the pre-run bathroom break. I did do my normal half mile fast walk for a warm up with Neva and then started running at 8:25 am. Neva went back to get her bike. She biked the entire trail, checking on me to or three times to make sure I was doing okay.
The trail where I started is fairly flat. I had thought that after all of the hills on my driveway, that I would enjoy that portion, but I sort of missed the downhills and running on flat ground seemed to take extra energy. As I got further into the run, I think it was the surface that seemed to be taking extra energy. Most of my running is done on pavement. This trail is crushed gravel, so a bit more slippery than I'm used to.
I tried to maintain a fairly easy effort, so was surprised that my first mile was 11:58 minutes. I tried to slow down a little and the second mile was 12:15. Still too fast. At around the 2.5 mile point, the trail started a steady incline that didn't seem too steep. I kept thinking it was going to end at some point, but it just kept going. I didn't have to worry about going too fast after that. I decided at around the 3 mile point to adopt the 60/30 sec run/walk interval until I made it to the top, which wasn't until the 4.5 mile point. The next mile was a slight down hill, followed by another incline to the trailhead where I stopped for a selfie and texted @Teresa502 .I was excited for the return trip, since most of it was going to be downhill. I was feeling pretty good, but it wasn't as pleasant as I had hoped. I think the incline up took a lot out of me. I did stop for a couple of photos of the scenery. It was very pretty once you got away from the down town area.I started fading pretty fast after mile 10. Up to that point all of my miles had been hanging around 13:00 minutes, except for mile 8 that was 13:36. I was so glad that @Teresa502 was heading my way to help me make it through those last miles. I had to walk A LOT during that time and even stopped once for a rest. It was great to have Teresa by my side to encourage me to run when I could. The last 3 miles were at 14:02, 15:06, and 15:38 minutes. I had nothing in me for a last minute sprint. I was very happy to be able to hit the stop button on my watch and know it was done. Teresa had made signs and put them up along the trail to encourage me as I went. Unfortunately, I didn't see any of them except the last one, that she pointed out. Well, I did see one, but only glimpsed what it said and thought it was for a yard sale. LOL Still it was very sweet of her and I am touched that she would do that in addition to coming to run with me.
This is the sign I saw. I read "scale" as "sale" and didn't read the rest of it. LOL
I had told Neva and Teresa that my legs were tired when I was slowing down, but, last night and this morning I was thinking back to the run and that really wasn't the case. I think that I didn't have enough fuel and was just spent. My legs were okay, I just felt like I couldn't go any further. At one point, I just wanted to sit down and cry and not move...thank to @Teresa being there, I didn't. It was the same feeling I had a few weeks ago when, after a long run, I had gone down to help mow mom's lawn and had to take a break because I just couldn't do any more. After eating some peanut butter and having a glass of tea, I was fine. Same feeling here. And, after I drank a quart of Gatorade after the run, I was feeling much better. So, my big take away from this run is that I need to work on fueling and hydration. I thought I was doing okay, but only had 3 Honey Stinger Chews and some water. That, apparently, is not enough for a HM.
