WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR FEBRUARY 2022

Well, at least my son and wife adored the show they went to see! It's had rave reviews.
I had the fall at the top of the house, where the older two's bedrooms are. I had turned all the lights off to encourage them to go to sleep and thought, "Oh, I can't see the stairs, I must be careful!" Not careful enough.
I then had to slide on my bottom, all the way down a huge old house from the third floor.
DH fetched me ice, which helped a lot.
This morning I'm awake early. I can hobble on it, - just. I've had worse sprains on that same ankle. I will not do my morning exercise today and take it easy. We are travelling to lunch in the car. I found an old compression sock from previous strains, so I've got that on.
On the way home, after midnight, we were stopped by the police. DH had not got his headlights on, only his sidelights. And people wonder why I don't like travelling in the car with him! He has done this several times before, years ago, and each time I have had to argue with him that he actually hasn't got them on. This time, I was saving my sanity by sitting in the back, so didn't notice. Grrrrrr! Today I will sit in the back and read on my phone or Kindle all the way. He has been to the pub before. I am going to make the best of it.
Lots of love to all Heather UK xxxxxxxx5 -
Sorry about your ankle, Heather!

Going to bed snackless last night had good scale results this morning. Can I do it again?
Got my laptop back, restored the files I’d temporarily updated from Joe’s pc, but wow, the paperwork and filing pile up in just a few days. Tomorrow will be a “reconcile-update spreadsheets-and-file” morning.
KJ thank you so much for your advice to Allie. You have the experience and knowledge and said it so much better than I would have. Likewise Barbie and Katla, well said.
Machka stunning river pics. Is that near where you live or was it an excursion?
Carla hooray for honest logging!
Vicki don’t you just hate it when you work harder to pay more in taxes? ((hugs)) to you and your DH and your pug.
Rita gorgeous pics, brava for trying to be positive.
Rebecca I admire your ability to find the fun in purging unneeded objects. A skill I wish I had… sometimes
Katla hope there are no “supply chain delay”s in getting your car parts.
Heather “…felt the tendons tear…” oww! Sounds like collapsing is the right idea. And perhaps asking your weekend guests to “help themselves” and even wait on you? No standing in the kitchen preparing your normal gourmet feasts!
Michele, hope you can let the “million things” go. Aren’t you supposed to be on vacation?
Welcome @AliceK813 Alice from FL! Great progress!
Sue how frustrating. Did you speak with the branch manager and show the instructions specifying photocopy? Personally when all’s done and done, I’d find a more cooperative bank.
Kim your insights on how Allie can avoid the inevitable creep are spot on. Your no-water garden sounds gorgeous. Seasonal pics? So wise to only plant O N E zucchini
Pip the pooped pooch-with-teddy-bear pic.
Tracey your stocking project sounds both fun and effective.
Sue what about cider?
Caved in and had cocoa and biscotti. Relished and enjoyed every sip and bite. Will remember that tomorrow morning when the scale bumps up.[sigh]

That was during a little trip up north last weekend.
It's near a place we've stayed quite frequently and when we're there, I try to go for that walk.

I've thought of it, and I don't mind it, but I rarely eat it.
Maybe it reminds me of eating pork when I was growing up. My parents served it with pork chops and pork roast and other horrible pork things. I do not like pork!!
Sorry that your work is so stressful.
I'm still getting used to my new job. I came from an area that was very, very quiet. Hardly anyone talked to each other. On the one hand, that was great because I could focus on what I was doing, but on the other hand, that was problematic because if I had questions, I always felt like I was interrupting when I asked questions.
My new area is very, very chatty. Everyone talks. They talk to each other. They talk on the phone. They talk in TEAMS meetings. They all talk at once and it gets very loud. On the one hand, that's not good for people like me who like quiet to focus, but on the other hand, if any of us have a question, we just shout it out and various ones will answer and discuss and it's good for learning new things. It's a very different experience.

Hi Gals,
For about a month I have been trying to put 2-3 hours of work in my yard every day – we have had unseasonably warm weather, so I am trying to take advantage of it. And it is really showing, the yard is more cleaned up/trimmed then it ever is in February!
Which is great as I have a couple of bigger projects I want to take on, and this may be the year. My on-going yard plan is to have the front yard be low water but full of plants/flowers. I have not watered in 5 years and in my climate there is no rain from May to October. I do have 6 pots that I do water, but that’s it. I have 4 inches of bark around every plant, and all the paths are flagstone.
There are dozens of daffodils, snow drops, bluebells, iris, and California blue eyed grass – all bulbs. They die back in May-June and then the saliva’s have the yard to fill with color. Red/white hot lips, purple and white Mexican sage, orange and yellow lions mane, and in the center of it all is a plumbago that is sky blue!
The back is grass, and veggie garden, with Peach, Lemon and pomegranate trees, Olallieberry and grape vines. I have started tomatoes, eggplant (aubergine) and peppers in the green house. I think I will put another round of peppers in as not as many came up as I had hoped. The seed is aging and not all are viable. In another month I’ll put in zucchini (1)(( courgettes)), acorn and butternut squash, snow peas (mangetout), carrots, chard, basil and a row of beets (beet root) I also want to try some lettuce or spinach, I have not had luck with those in the past, but I am hoping! I also saw my first asparagus of the season today
Thinking of you all, and hoping for a happy healthy day

I'm trying something similar.
One of the reasons I've been putting as much work as I have lately in our garden is to get it to the point where it is easier to manage.
I've picked up 2 native plants which should turn into nice bushes but one of the things I really like about them is that they are drought resistant. They don't require much water. I just need to figure out where to put them. I had a place in mind - a gap in the hedging around our yard - but I pulled all the weeds in the hedging and especially in that gap, and the hedging has finally started growing into the gap. So I'll leave it.
I had planted Swan River Daisies because they are also supposed to be hardy and somewhat drought resistant too, but they didn't come up. I'll have to give them another go in a different place I think.
We also use lots of mulch. My husband enjoys making mulch!
We do water, but it's with an irrigation system and only for about 30 minutes late at night.
"My" garden bed wasn't the success I hoped it would be so my plan has changed. I want to put in a fake stream meandering through. The "stream" might be just stones. Then when I plant, I'll plant somewhat closer together for more impact. And I'm going through and removing weeds and all their roots so the plants have a better chance.
One of the things we have a lot of this year is cabbage. I'm actually thinking of trying my hand at cabbage rolls!!

Good morning all! Happy Wednesday! Welcome to the new ladies! Join in when you feel the urge; and remember to bookmark the thread.
Ugh! Heather! A slip down the stairs and a sprained ankle! Sending healing thoughts your way. Be a good girl and stay off your feet!
Machka- Beautiful views on your walk! Your new office environment sounds like it could easily become a bit overwhelming. I would need to buy a pair of noise cancelling head phones, in order to work. It is not that I mind the noise, but I can become easily distracted by chit chat. lol
Rita- Blue skies and water sports. Looks like it was a lovely day and I am happy you were able to get out and enjoy it/clear the cobwebs away!
Allie- Those part time hours don't sound bad. YES! So many businesses are letting employees work from home. Is Tracy a travel agent? I know a couple of people who work for Disney; planning vacations for people...and they do it all from home.
Rebecca- Your soups sound SO good! I have been working my way through a pot of chicken soup this week.
Another "meet cute"- One of my childcare families; the parents went to the same childcare woman when they were very small and were best friends from infant through age five. When they were about five years old, the little boys family moved out of state. The little boy and little girl grew up and hardly thought of each other. Then... they ended up going to the same college and met at a pub near campus, introduced by friends. AFter chatting they figured out that they were from the same city, same neighborhood, same childcare...lol AND then they got married.
Well, kids are arriving and I have to get some pancakes going for them. I ran out of yogurt, so I had cottage cheese for breakfast. Meh...might have to follow it up with a bowl of soup. I feel like I need something warm. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)2 -

One of my cousins past about two years ago falling down stairs at his daughters house while watching his grandchildren. He was diabetic which might have contributed to his accident. I know from subbing that when you are in a different location you need to take more care. I had a few accidents and some close calls because of being in a strange place.
When DH was struggling with his balance the first thing I did was take up almost all our throw rugs. I also make an effort when I see any closet doors or drawers open to close them. I guess the newer cabinets automatically close and I do think that is a great safety feature. One thing I know I have to watch is not putting anything on the stairs that can be a tripping hazard.
Heather it sounds like the lack of light and making a misstep caused your accident. I am so sorry for your fall and missing your show. I am just grateful it wasn't even more serious.1 -
Heather- heal quick my friend xoxo
Got a call from the endocrinologist office and all is well no cancer.. a follow up ultrasound in about 6 months..

When I turned the light off on the landing Max's light was streaming out into the hallway. Then, as I got to the small set of stairs, he turned it off. I thought, oh dear, I'll have to be careful. Whoops!
Enjoyed lunch. Talked too much because I have hardly seen anyone for ages. Oh well. I ate very sparingly.
On the way there and back I sat in the back and watched downloaded episodes of a Netflix series called Shtisel. Very good..Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem. I'm loving it. I didn't notice the journey.
Now have my foot up .I slept for an hour and a half this morning after breakfast. DH can make a snack for dinner.

KJ— I love cottage cheese and have it for breakfast most mornings. I have a scoop of 2 percent cottage cheese topped with blueberries. I grow the blueberries myself. Bliss! 🫐🫐🫐. It comes naturally. My grandfather was a cottage cheese maker during the 1930’s through the late 1940’s. He passed away when I was 3 or 4. DH likes his cottage cheese with pineapple chunks, (not the whole pineapple.)🍍🍍🍍2

I did my yoga, six minutes elliptical, and marching yay! This session Adriene pulled a surprise - a side plank. It's on my list of things I can't do, and I didn't think a little yoga would change that. So first I was thinking of giving up on number seven of the thirty videos. Then by the time we got to the other side I tried it. I can only hold it for ten seconds or so, but that's a start! Yay! I'm getting stronger!

To me being a bit more minimalistic helps me flow thru my day better. It makes me see the important things, I can cleaner easier, its all positive things.

Hi Gals,
A few random thoughts…
Allie – like most of us “Oldies” who have known you for years, I too have been concerned about the babysitting venture. Although if I read this right it would be 4 hours a day, 3 days a week so a total of 12 hours. My concern is creep – the oh can you watch him while I shop, or work overtime, or…. Can you just stay until time to pick up Carmine? Nothing you can do until it happens except for thinking out a plan for how to respond. Creep is harder to deal with after it starts than to deal with it the very first time.
Katla – could you just pin a piece of fabric on to the headliner to cover the skylight, so it was not so bright?
Heather - Ouch!!! take care of it!

I will be going up to mom's next weekend to start working in her green house. Hoping it goes better than last year. She has said she doesn't want to plant as much- too many plants never got planted so wasted seeds. She wants to plant at most, half of what we did last year of the tomatoes and a LOT less of the cherry tomatoes- too many rotted on the vines.
I love helping plant. I just hope she remembers to water the main garden after putting in all those hours of planting seeds- last year three weeks after I had spent so many hours planting, went up and they had not been watered yet.
Dad has a list that tells how many years each kind of seed is good for. We do try and see if they will grow if they are past that but I think some were too far past last time(plus not being watered, really bad potting soil mom had delivered, etc)
We can't plant out in the garden until May first- usually try for that date- because of frost.
I can plant at my place before that but have to wait for the plants to get big enough.
I plant a little of everything but everything is in pots or raised beds here.
No matter where I have lived over the years(moved around when former hubby was in the Coast Guard) I always had a little garden. I HAVE to have fresh tomatoes and cucumbers.
