VENTING IN PROGRESS***
My DH has had three back/spinal surgeries (all three surgeries were in the late 80s and very early 90s). He has a long scar that runs along his spine from just below the ribcage to his tail bone. So, heating pads have been a part of his daily regime. Since his RA kicked in, he pretty much doesn't go anywhere without some sort of heating pad or heated jacket. I always get after him because he always has those pads set to high heat and for a loooong time. So worried he is going to burn his skin. Well, yesterday he comes up to me and lifts the back of his shirt and says what is this bump? Is it on my scar? His entire lower back was red. Like sunburn red. And he had a blister on his scar. For someone who spent his whole life thinking everything through and thinking of future repercussions on EVERYTHING, I am so frustrated that he has done this to himself. *gah!

HALO ice cream - we don't have the same flavours everywhere. I like it okay as a not too high calorie and with some protein splurge... it's not incredible but a fair occasional treat.
I think I actually enjoy soy yogurt (it's good texture here) we frozen berries and a tsp of maple syrup and a few seeds or nuts, and vanilla or orange flower water or cardoon. pretty healthy and feels a bit more "solid" but I like the halo okay as a quick alternative....3 -
HEATHER awesome for your exchange with the star!1

BARBARA I unfortunately have many veggie free meals. I try to have veggies in at least tone meal per day. I have had better periods - food wise.
today: cereal w fruit, soy yogurt protein cereal and seeds, an apple
snack : student brought in traditional Vietnamese new year's treat (Banh Chung) and few students ate It. (2 can't eat pork and for the 2 others I don't know - not adventurous ? vegetarians ?). So I had two slivers to honor her. it was good I was hesitant for ingredients. it seemed wierd. the amount I had was very little calories.
lunch: take away sushi maki and Vietnamese spring roll
so very little veggie : just the lettuce wrapping the spring roll and a few bean sprouts inside maybe...
dinner should be better right?0 -
While watching Olympic figure skating yesterday (I'm a few days behind because I've recorded it) I heard about one woman who isolated in an RV on her family's property for 14 days before the Olympics to take all precautions to avoid Covid and another who practiced at an empty skating rink from midnight to 3 AM each night so she could stay away from other people. It made me feel better about how we have stayed isolated. I was sad last week to hear that one of the US men's figure skaters missed skating in the Olympics because of a positive Covid test.

Good morning, afternoon or evening, all,
Rain is coming down in sheets outside, but as soon as it stops, the wind is supposed to come up and the temperatures will start dropping down to below freezing by mid-afternoon. Weird weather.
To everyone who's hurting, many hugs. I've been reading, but had a hard time stringing words together in order to respond. To those who've triumphed, many hugs to you too!
It's possible I'm having a hard time with writing because I've been slugging it out with the VA and the Social Security people. TL;DR: Dealing with two monolithic government agencies at the same time is definitely cruel and unusual punishment:First and foremost, both agencies have numerous deadlines for the processes I'm dealing with right now, and they want you to fax the filled-out forms. I haven't even SEEN a fax machine in a decade, much less used one. I know I could use my printer scanner and then get a fax application for the computer, but they really need to step into this century. Good grief.
Anyway, I'm dealing with the critters at the Social Security Administration because they kept sending me nasty grams that I needed to get my forms to them or I risk getting my benefits started in April, so I had to get on the phone with them (40 minutes on hold) and get that straightened out. Apparently, they received the forms the day before the last automated nasty gram was mailed, and the system hadn't been updated yet.
The VA is supposed to get my official transfer finished today and in their system so I can quit dealing with the incompetence of my current doctor and get back to my previous one. One message at the bottom of the form I had to fill out says, "There are a maximum of two requested doctor transfers per lifetime." The implications in that statement are absolutely chilling.
The last straw dealing with my now hopefully ex-doctor was when she cut my anti-spasmodic prescription in half without informing me, so I ran out because I was taking them at the same rate as I had before. My fault for not checking the prescription and lesson learned for the future. But in the meantime, my guts have been in constant, painful spasm. My gastroenterologist was kind enough to prescribe enough to get me through until I'm able to talk to my primary doc and straighten things out. Until that transfer is in the system, they can't even schedule a phone appointment for me.
Going to try to make a couple of cream soups today - right now, celery and potato, but if they turn out well, I may try a seafood bisque. They can be frozen for about three months, which is helpful. I better get a move on!
Later y'all,
Love,
Lisa8 -
We are expecting Storm Eunice tomorrow 60-80 mile an hour winds. Hope our tv aerial stays up! It should be a bit better by the time our guests set out for us on Saturday.
I did a good writing session this morning. It's always great when you set out with a reluctant heart, struggle for a bit and then it comes together and you have actually written quite a lot.
I still feel a bit in shock from my fall. I am just sooooooo grateful it wasn't worse.
Lots of AF drink arrived. I'm interested to try the fizzy cucumber infused water.
Love Heather UK xxxxxx1 -

Machka gorgeous cabbage! What about sauerkraut?
Allie thank goodness for the favorable results, both yours and your DD’s. Fingers X’d the dietician has some helpful ideas. Brava for setting a boundary with Carmine.
KJ and Katla I like my cottage cheese with citrus (clementines, navel oranges, red grapefruit) in the winter and black cherries and white peachs in the summer. Spring and fall its either pineapple or no cottage cheese for me.
Annie brava for not giving up. Well done!
Debbie glad to hear your mom is ready to scale back the plantings. Any hope to get help (4H-ers or?) with garden maintenance? Last year pastor’s wife gave me a zucchini plant that did fine potted in the plastic mini-greenhouse on the porch. I nipped ‘em off when they were tiny, the way I like them, and it produced all summer. Thanks for the frozen cottage cheese to ricotta texture tip.
Vicki good job keeping up with the gym.
Katla AHA! So it was YOU who snuck that monster zucchini into my parked car when I left the window open
Michele Joe has noticed how the cereal boxes have gotten narrower, but more expensive. Pfaugh. “…toilet and the end of the driveway…”
Kim (and Tracey) “…lives at your house…” LOL!
Pip which beach? Heartstopping pic. And how can you tell that face it’s time to go?
Rori $400 off your lavender phone.
Betsy good luck with your cataract surgery. Joe’s improved his vision dramatically and immediately. Prayers for the stent, that it allows you to manage glaucoma without drops, what a great hope. Sounds like you have a great Part B supplemental plan.
Barbie the comfy crew
Mary fingers X’d for the grands’ visit.
Heather hooray for SHORT visit. Two years waiting for surgery, how I hate the impacts of this virus. “…always great when you start out with a reluctant heart, struggle for a bit..” true of so many things, activity, interpersonal intentions… ((hugs)) and hoping the shock wears off soon and ankle heals fully before the cruise. Will there be dancing on board?
Terri “. . .DH and I will continue to protect ourselves as best we can.” Ditto. One of my dance pals said “Government says you don’t have to mask when dancing, when will you be back.” My reponse was that I don’t care what the Government says, it’s a personal responsibility issue. Joe and I are both over 70, over weight and former smokers, so even though we’re double vaxxed and boosted, chances of complications are not good. I also have to tell myself that doing all I can to keep us safe is more important than dancing or singing indoors with friends.Karen, didn’t know that about the 4th dose, thank you SO much for posting. Does Pfizer vs Moderna make a difference?
Ginny, didn’t know about Applie watch’s fall monitor. What a great idea. Understand it can also monitor heart activity. Might have to start saving…
KJ ((hugs)) So frustrating for you that he doesn’t take your advice seriously, for him that to ease pain he has to burn his skin. Any alternatives?
Julie “soy yogurt” My breakfasts are always “veggie free” unless there are potatoes
Barbie thanks for the stories of how Olympic skaters did their best to keep safe.
Lisa glad to see you posting, sorry and angry for what the SocSec and VA systems are putting you through. Bravissima for persisting. That “per lifetime” restriction is both chilling and unbelievable. Hope there is an ombudsman or other appeals option. Your service entitles you to better treatment.
Carol, prayer for your DnL’s missionary mom said. Danger zone.
Carla enjoy your retreat! Hope it’s a real de-stressor.
Welcome @jpeters25 Joni in Tulsa! Let us know a little about you?
All caught up from yesterday at last. Time to get up off my duff.

Going to bed snackless last night had good scale results this morning. Can I do it again?
Got my laptop back, restored the files I’d temporarily updated from Joe’s pc, but wow, the paperwork and filing pile up in just a few days. Tomorrow will be a “reconcile-update spreadsheets-and-file” morning.
KJ thank you so much for your advice to Allie. You have the experience and knowledge and said it so much better than I would have. Likewise Barbie and Katla, well said.
Machka stunning river pics. Is that near where you live or was it an excursion?
Carla hooray for honest logging!
Vicki don’t you just hate it when you work harder to pay more in taxes? ((hugs)) to you and your DH and your pug.
Rita gorgeous pics, brava for trying to be positive.
Rebecca I admire your ability to find the fun in purging unneeded objects. A skill I wish I had… sometimes
Katla hope there are no “supply chain delay”s in getting your car parts.
Heather “…felt the tendons tear…” oww! Sounds like collapsing is the right idea. And perhaps asking your weekend guests to “help themselves” and even wait on you? No standing in the kitchen preparing your normal gourmet feasts!
Michele, hope you can let the “million things” go. Aren’t you supposed to be on vacation?
Welcome @AliceK813 Alice from FL! Great progress!
Sue how frustrating. Did you speak with the branch manager and show the instructions specifying photocopy? Personally when all’s done and done, I’d find a more cooperative bank.
Kim your insights on how Allie can avoid the inevitable creep are spot on. Your no-water garden sounds gorgeous. Seasonal pics? So wise to only plant O N E zucchini
Pip the pooped pooch-with-teddy-bear pic.
Tracey your stocking project sounds both fun and effective.
Sue what about cider?
Caved in and had cocoa and biscotti. Relished and enjoyed every sip and bite. Will remember that tomorrow morning when the scale bumps up.[sigh]

Awe, if I don't use it, it goes. For example this is what is on my kitchen table for today. Just stuff I pick up, and know we haven't touched in so long! (Boring pics so I put in a spoiler)But you get an idea.
To me being a bit more minimalistic helps me flow thru my day better. It makes me see the important things, I can cleaner easier, its all positive things.
Hugs friend!
Rebecca
But a lot of those things you might use ... like the bandages, for example. Those are things I stock up on.
Three of the boxes were nose strips, and though they do help a cold, its neither husband nor I first go to thing when we do have stuffy noses. I feel claustrophobic with them on, and husband has a big honker! The kids bandaids are more for show, too much plastic picture, not enough bandaid part. I have a whole plastic box with dividers from the little dot bandaids to the huge square "should we call an ambulance" bandaids. 😁👍

Lisa: I was going to say that I couldn’t believe the runaround you are getting, but on second thoughts, the incompetence of the bureaucracy is totally believable.
Heather: It’s always a delight when one sits down to write and the muse strikes.
Barbara: That’s exactly my point! Just because you can do it doesn’t mean you should!
I was almost in tears after the ladies skating final. The little Russian 15 year old was distraught. What were her coaches thinking of?
Skating was one of my passions as a teenager, but the start of the Troubles in N Ireland meant that we lost our ice rink, as it was used to house the soldiers that were drafted in to deal with them. It was 20 years before I was able to skate again, when a new rink was built near the school I taught in. I remember the first time I took some of our pupils to the rink. They were so surprised when I started doing spins and jumps. I had been back on the ice taking lessons for months at that stage 😂
Welcome to our new ladies.
(((Hugs))) and prayers if you need them.

Oh, I forgot the cherry on top of the VA sundae... Got my annual letter in the mail that shows the VA benefits I receive (which at that very moment made me roll my eyes back so far I'm pretty sure I saw my brain... 🙄 ). I picked the letter back up again yesterday while I was filing stuff - and in glancing over it, I saw they are still using my previous married last name (Mrazik). I was married to Corey, my current and final husband, 13 YEARS AGO.

Well me washing the cast iron in the sink with kosher salt, then placing on the burner to heat all the water away, just made all the the water go down into the burner pans and turn back to oil. So one of the burners this morning caught fire! Lee blew out the flame , so it didn't even set off the smoke detectors. So I guess with me scrubbing the cast iron in the sink, it does take all the oil residue away from inside, but then the hot water kind of redistribute it throughout the whole surface of the pan. Now after I have cooked something in it, taken the food out, I do fill with water and bring up to a low boil, scraping it so all the food particles loosen. Then carefully take it over to the sink and pour it down, with hot water from the tap running. So I guess instead of using the burner to heat up any water that's on the outside, I just need to dry with paper towel, then either put in the oven to make sure there isn't any moisture in its pores to rust. I do put a thin layer of oil on the inside only. I like to cook with these, but I don't want the oils from them to get on my burners, nor have a stopped up drain from cleaning them. I do not have a disposal. But I have a mesh drain cover.
Presently all the burner rings and pans (they're connected) are soaking in hot water, and I will scrub them with SOS pads. Fun city!
So do many of you take the recycle or reuse thing a bit too far? I buy these certain brand of nacho chips and the bags are really durable! I am mailing a pen pal my son's shower curtain, (because I wanted a new one), and I bubbled wrapped it and slipped it in the chip bag.
Its made of this plastic just like the proper mailers so hopefully after the post mail stops laughing, he'll mail it!
I also reuse my plastic bags a couple of times. I use my mineral water bottles to help the drying process!
Also those lids the grated parmesan cheese use, they fit perfectly on Amy !as on jar. I use the plastic jars too for things like the salad toppings.
Ok my Recycling 101 class is done. Lol!

My the way, when they built this kitchen they didn't know what they were doing half the time! The backsplash part is glued using glue that stained the paint area. (See above bacon fat pic). Plus its not actually stuck on, just leaning on it. Its a rental thru and thru! Lee says, we aren't using our money to pay for things they should've fixed before we moved in! So we just made a note of it in the check-in sheet and the crappy kitchen backsplash will be leaning up, when we move out.

Rebecca — We have cast iron pots and pans and love them. We use them regularly and wash them with liquid dish soap and rinse them. We set them on the dish drainer to dry. Once they are dry I rub them with olive oil or other vegetable oil to keep them safe from rust. DH & I both enjoy the food that is cooked in them. ❤️ We bought an instant pot when they came out. DH loved it when it was new. It works okay as a pressure cooker, but we seldom use it. The cast iron pots and pans are our favorites. 🖤 🥰1

Ugh, ugh, ugh, Lisa. Does somebody need to expose and publicise this mess-up? I absolutely hate incompetence and slackness. That's one of the reasons we go to Saga for our cruises. They live up to my very high expectations! Clearly someone (who?) needs to get a grip on the VA and the rest of it. The trouble is, you are caught in a bind, because you need them and have to keep them sweet.
I love complaining, but not when I'm a supplicant.
I'm so enjoying Shtisel on Netflix.
Love to you all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx1 -
