nLisa - thank you for your comment re: happiness and being anti-fragile. My siblings and I also had a pretty bad childhood, and we each have been very damaged by it to this very day. It is encouraging to read/hear others who can find happiness now in various ways.
despite having also gone through the wringer. It makes me realize that I can do that too if I just adjust my thinking. I'm really bad about dismissing the things I do right, and end up focusing on the bad stuff. Your comment came at just the right time - I'm going to start recognizing and honoring how even the smallest actions I take make me feel positive. Thank you!
@bethe, I'm so glad that I can provide some positive reinforcement to you! I recognized four decades ago that I didn't have to look at my world through my abuser's eyes, and that people have the ability to live their own lives BECAUSE of their past or IN SPITE of it. That epiphany didn't solve everything, but it did give me a starting place when I was able to reach for it.
Cheers!

Did Biggest Loser the Workout DVD then a pilates DVD then took a walk around the block. Went to buy gas and to WalMart. The time to go is early Sunday morning. Nothings crowded and you can get in and out real fast. Made chocolate bran muffins and have yogurt in the IP right now. Work tomorrow
Barbie – I guess we shall see how receptive Denise is to us coming up when we say that we’re going to give Pete his birthday present. So glad the visit went well! That was nice of you to give him the dumbbells
Carla – no A/C????? Here’s hoping it gets fixed real quick. In the meantime, take lots and lots of cold baths
Guests: I always worry about what I’ll serve and will I have enough food? I bet Heather has this worry, too.
Beth – how does you husband feel about fruit? I have a cookbook called “I can’t believe this has no sugar”. Most of the recipes don’t use sugar substitutes (yes, some do) but call on using juice concentrates primarily as the sweetener
Went to BK and I made a boo-boo. The meeting was for AUGUST 24. Oh well, I needed to get ice anyway plus I needed pool noodles from the $1.25 store since I had poster board to return. I did have to tell the lady that I should get change and how much change I should get. Interestingly….she wasn’t a young thing. So I got to put my yogurt in to strain, got another walk around the block in and then played mahjongg by the pool. Just took a shower and I hear it’s thundering

Barbara, so sorry about the washing machine. I cannot stand for things I depend on to be broken. You can buy a new machine for what seems like just a few trips to the laundromat around here. They are crazy expensive!
Kelly, somehow I missed your post about your silent heart attack. Glad you are ok. We probably need to get some aspirin for our medicine cabinet. That is something we don't have.
Rita, that is a crazy story.
Books: Did I ask y'all already if anybody had read "We Need to Talk About Kevin"? It took me 4 rechecks from the library to get through it, but I finally did. It was a most disturbing book. I am now listening to "Skye Falling" on audio and enjoying it. I'm also reading "The Girl in His Shadow." It's a book from the library that is available everywhere with no hold. They call it a Big Library Read. Anybody else participating in that? It's quite interesting, but I haven't gotten very far into it.1 -

Pip - I can see the difference in that rug. Great job!
Kelly - that must have been scary for you. Glad your men are stepping up.
Rita - that would be a very rude awakening, I hope those girls have been scared straight.
Kaye - What is YNAB?
Barbara - I used the laundromat for the first two years we lived here and there are days I would love to do it again. It was so quick and easy to get it all done at once. Their folding tables were the right height and it was a couple hours of just me time. A lot of times I would use it for my walking time.
Michele - I think it’s high time Vince gave you that stimulus money. It’s been long enough.
Hope PJ heals fast.
Barbie - I’m so happy you and Jake had a great visit.
Kim - I am more in your camp. I love large gatherings and would host more if I had people to come. I also miss the days of “drop in for a coffee”. Now people have to plan everything and I hate it.
Carla - I hope you and your daughter work it all out. I understand how difficult it is. I am concerned about prying with my daughter, but at the same time don’t want to seem I’m not concerned. I am leaving the subject alone unless she opens the door. It’s a tough line to walk.
If you AC is only 10 years old, it might just be a small fix, it might be worth it to just pay a service call fee first. Our furnace is 40+ years old and we were told it was still cheaper to replace a part as other parts are still in good condition. You might still get your deck.
I had a DH like Freddy for about a dozen years it was so hard to tell him anything. I’m sorry you are going through it.
Carol - one of our major telecommunications companies had an issue 3 weeks ago and it shut down Interac for most of the country. It has heightened the sense that we all need to have some cash in reserve for emergencies. The bank line ups were horrendous and some banks ran out of the cash needed. It was quite the mess.
I always try to have $20 or so in cash, but I’ve thought about upping that since then.
My girls weekend was incredible.
This is baby and her Mama.

Lanette: Lisa: and others…
🥰 anti-fragility. Decided a long time ago that I would not be defined by others opinion, and choose to be happy, and focus on the positive. I recognise and acknowledge my negative feelings, but tend not to dwell on them. My Nana was a great motivator. She taught me at an early age to look for the positive in every situation.
We can’t control events, or other people’s actions, but we can control how we react to them.
Rita: 😱 Not surprised you were all shook up. ((( hugs)))

Michele the laundromat sticker shock was only two or three times what I remembered from decades ago, but OH! The sticker shock for a new washing machine !!! And that’s just Mr. Google, it will be more from local company with installation and disposal of old. Thanks for the “I can’t believe this has no sugar” cookbook recommendation, I’ll look for it.
Suebdew your son is a heart surgeon? Well done, Mama!
Kim, YES, that’s exactly it: bur clover. Thanks so much! It’s everywhere in Gold Beach and also in the Crescent City dog park. Crissey field, not so much, thank goodness. Now that I know what the parent plant looks like I know what to watch for. Hope I don’t see any on our land, sounds like it’s tough to eradicate.
Barbie thanks for understanding. Was pretty upset but managed not to take it out on Joe for once. Delighted to hear the visit went well and especially that the grands were easy to get along with. Had to smile at Jake’s daughter vacuuming. Imagine he restrained himself from any helpful suggestions
Debbie, thanks, I’ll look for Passage to Asia Satay sauce packets and Saffron Road tika masala at our Grocery Outlet. Nearest Asian market is hours away and my prior attempts at curries from scratch have been unsuccessful.
Heather Cuban beans? Would you share recipe? Trying to find more ways to incorporate legumes
Carla Aarrrgh indeed. Losing AC amidst the current heat, just awful. How long is the lead time for replacement?
Lisa “The first rule of thumb for us is, never buy a car that's at the top end of your ability to pay, and never buy a house that you can't pay off in five years. We also make sure cars and houses don't have early-payoff penalties.” Wisdom this, but our rule for houses is 10 years
Lanette thanks for the Bifidobacterium reminder, will chiffonade some red cabbage today!
Rita WOW! ((hugs)) and glad you’re taking a recovery day.
Bethe “I'm going to start recognizing and honoring how even the smallest actions I take make me feel positive…” Brava!
Carol I’d love to replace the flooring, suspect there’s mold down thar from last years water heater disaster, but Joe would resist the disruption and we’d have to refinance beyond our 10 year target to be able to afford.
Beth thanks for the “includes nuts and herbs” clue about the 30 plants per week. Suspect I might make that goal… per month
Kay I’m willing to invest in a $peed Queen wa$her and I want one that will last ‘til our mortgage is paid off. Have read of too many new appliances dying within the first few years. Laundromat was only $6 for the four load super washers. Dryers took about $3 each to dry jeans, towels, turtlenecks and throw rugs.
Tracey your “me” and “walking” time at the laundromat was what I did yesterday. Am thinking to go again to do the cold water washes that I felt were less urgent yesterday What is “interact”
Machka missing you and hoping all’s well with you.
Whoops, looks like I missed my Joe time. Gotta scoot to see if he’s still available.

Good morning all! I am sending a "Happy Monday" greeting to you all, although my Monday feels gray and bleak. I cancelled childcare for today, last night, after I got a call from one of the childcare mothers. Her seven year old daughter, passed away Sunday evening. This sweet girl entered life whole, healthy and ready to live and the "whole and healthy" part was taken from her by her birth mother shaking her. This sweet girl spent her entire life in reclining wheel chairs, feeding tubes, sometimes needing oxygen, needing extra care with keeping airways clear, needing help moving and doing all things, unable to speak/speak up for herself. But she could smile and laugh and did it almost all day. I didn't care for her on a daily basis, but she and her mom would often accompany us on field trips, walks, park days, etc., as her younger sister is in my care every day. My heart just aches for this little family; and I am spending today prepping some ways to cover the topic of death with my childcare kids. I have some families that believe in an afterlife/heaven. I have some families that don't. (By families, I mean mainly parents) I firmly believe that children seem to fare better, emotionally, if they believe that there is a place like Heaven, where their loved ones are being cared for and living and waiting to be with them again. To tell a child that death is the end and there is nothing after that, seems very dark and not very "hope-giving".
RIta- I am with you in thinking that those girls were on something. I hope they are given some counseling/therapy wherever they decide to put them. I hope you are able to get some relief from the heat!
Tracey- Your daughter looks a lot like you! Are they at a rodeo?
Pip- The rug looks great! You have a great eye for decoration.
regarding secret stashes- Having a secret stash of $$ is something I have always done. Even as a teen, in my childhood home. (I had siblings that would often raid my piggy bank) When I married DH, I quickly found that he was extravagant with his spending on the kids, but extraordinarily tight with me. Well, not necessarily tight, but if I needed/wanted extra $ for something; I would usually get some resistance, grumbling, a lecture about how tight money is...blah, blah, blah...so, it was far easier to have a stash of mad money for myself. He has never found it, but in a moment of weakness, one year, I did hand over my stash to help him pay bills. He was surprised and angry. I have never given him $$ since then, even though he sometimes asks if I have any. We have made a deal that I take $25/week just to have cash in my purse, and that I also may keep any "extra" $ that comes in due to families needing care that is on top of the regular care. IMO, having a stash for myself, and not having to deal with the grumbling and eye rolling is well worth it.
Well, I am going to sign off and get outside for a bit. Love and hugs to those who need it. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

KJ - I hope you can cover the topic of death in an open way. If I were one of your parents I would be furious if you were telling my kid something I did not believe in. I brought my children up as atheists and feel very strongly about it. I had a big argument with one of their teachers. I think it's fine to say "Some people think this and some people think this. They are always in our hearts anyway."
Edited a chapter today and the cleaner is coming this afternoon. She is bi-weekly. D H is thinking of going into town to try to find new cargo pants. I will do some rowing to the accompaniment of Netflix.
Cauliflower and broccoli cheese for dinner with bacon.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxx0 -
Kelly KJ ~ So sad for the family of the little girl who passed away! Pray that you will have the right words to broach this with your child care little people.
Barbara ~ We had to invest in a new washer and dryer several months ago. My biggest fear is that they are totally run by computers and if the computer dies, we will be in a mess. Yes, they were expensive.
Carol in GA3 -
I grew up with a lot of good examples of handling money that have served me well. My parents were raised during the depression and lived with slim resources so their lessons were about making the most of very slender resources. My father told me "The way to save money is not to spend it," For me that has translated into very intentional spending. My mother taught me the value of not wasting food. That translates into intentional food shopping and creating odd meals in order to not waste any left-overs.

Good morning ladies!
Well my sister, her daughter-in-law and her grandkids are on their way home. The three year old was a real trial for his poor pregnant mom, due in November. When you have a toddler in a non- childproof house with no entertainment, somebody has to basically run after the child every minute. And he soon figured out how to threaten his mom about going outside or going upstairs. He was way off his nap schedule, and he only wanted his mom. He would scream and stamp his feet in a fit at least every five minutes, and he screamed at my dog every time he got close. But the nine year old had gotten much more independent and mature, and quiet, since last time. So we made it through, not much broken, only a door handle. And no injuries. So that's good.
So back to my diet today. I already had stress cookies, when there was screaming over breakfast and I had to leave the room. But as of now, I am back on the straight and narrow. I have to move things in the basement before I can do my yoga, but I have time.
Kelly, I'm sorry for your loss, and the struggle of helping children deal with it, on top of your heart attack. This should be a day for you to relax!

Kaye - What is YNAB?
Tracey in Edmonton
Tracey, YNAB stands for You Need a Budget. It is budgeting software. When I started using it, it was a one-time fee, but it has now gone to a yearly subscription. You customize the categories and assign your money to the categories as soon as it is available to spend. It comes with lots of online support for learning how to use it. They advocate you eventually getting to where you are a month ahead in your spending. It totally helped us to break the paycheck to paycheck cycle. Just like tracking your food, it brings serious awareness - like having all of my clothing spending in one spot in black and white - YIKES! When my pension comes in on the first of the August, I will take that money plus our social security checks that came in on the 4th Wednesday of July and assign it all for spending in September. YNAB and MFP are very similar in keeping my excesses in line.
Oh, Kelly, what a sad day! Prayers for you and your daycare family.
Barbara, your laundromat seems much more reasonable than mine. I only use it for washing comforters and bedding. The machines that handle those take 17 quarters each, and I usually need a couple. Then $2 or $3 in quarters for each dryer as well. We have a simple Whirlpool washer and dryer. They serve our purposes well.

It's Monday!
Carla - Tracey's story reminded me that our A/C conked out several times during hot hot weather. Once, it needed a new switch on the outdoor unit. Several years ago, it just needed a new thermostat. Both repairs cost around $500 with parts and labor. When I replaced the old unit a month ago, it was 15 years old. Probably could have gotten another year or two out of it. Hope the fix for yours is within your budget and you can still get the new deck!
Barbara - I really like our Speed Queen, purchased from a local retail store. Prices were equivalent to H Depot's top brands. Made in the USA, 5 year warranty if I remember right. The first couple months we had it, the dryer was acting funny. So the repairman (salesman from the store!) came by and fiddled with it that afternoon, no charge. Just like service was 40 years ago!
I had a problem with the washer smelling like mildew.Seems like its only been within the past several months. I personally think there's a build up of "earth friendly" detergents and/or fabric softeners which I read can coat the inside of the hoses. And our water has a high mineral content which probably interacts with suds. Because we are on septic, I don't like the idea of running a cup of clorox through it once a month, have tried the OK for septic once a month treatment which I wasn't happy with.
So, I hit Google - someone suggested using Listerine mouthwash. I experimented and finally have settled with spraying the inside of the tub with it after a load and leaving the lid up. Recipe - 2/3 cheap Walmart Listerine knock off with 1/3 water in a big $1 (used to be!) spray bottle. I spray the whole inside just enough that I can see it start to puddle a little in the bottom. Maybe 8 squirts altogether. Lasts for days and days!
I also quit using fabric softener and have started using Purex laundry detergent with Oxiclean. I'm kind of a "super smeller" and really like this scent, plus the clothes still smell fresh after being put in a drawer or hanging in the closet for a while.
Debbie - gosh that's rough dealing with your DH's depression. (((HUGS)))) So glad you are able to get your long walks in, and that you have us here. I see there's now a national mental health hotline number 988. Might be worth calling if you are extra worried about his behavior, the ads say it connects you with a mental health counselor but it might end up being a referral line to a nearby clinic.
I want to thank you for sharing your great Grocery Outlet finds! I haven't been there in a couple months but will stop the next time I'm in town.
Do any of you like Asian pan fried noodles? My knock-off:Walmart has Annie Chun's noodle bowls - Teriyaki, Pad Thai, Spicy Asian. I generally cook up the noodles without the seasoning packet, but it have used it before.
Meanwhile, I chop a quarter head of green cabbage, maybe a couple chunks of carrot, and saute that in a little peanut oil with a couple drops of sesame oil in my big skillet. When it's wilted I toss in the drained noodles, and a cup of chopped cooked chicken. Sometimes left over rotisserie chicken, sometimes cooked chicken tenders. I might add a little more peanut oil. Want to get it thoroughly heated. Then I dump in about half the sauce packet that came with the noodles, keep stirring it all around. If I want it saltier I'll squeeze in more of the sauce.
It's enough for three meals for me. I've been having it with more fried cabbage/green beans/broccoli (fridge cleanout, lol.)
The noodles- not sure if Grocery Outlet has them. I think I paid $2.50 the last time I loaded up at Walmart. https://www.amazon.com/Annie-Chuns-Peanut-Non-GMO-Thai-Style/dp/B000N8N45W/ref=sr_1_4?crid=1L8M9SIYSRFIV&keywords=annie+chun+noodle+bowl&qid=1658754676&sprefix=annie+chu,aps,296&sr=8-4
Kelly - that precious sweet little girl has been released from her earthly body. I'm sure you'll find a way to answer your little's questions to give them comfort.
Ok the sun is coming up, I better get the watering going.
Make it a fabulous day!

Hello all... hope it is/was a good Monday for everyone.
Annie - glad you survived the visit!
KJ - I'm always so impressed with your ability to help get these kids information that will make sense to them. I'm so sorry about the girl's death.
I'm procrastinating as hard as I can to keep from getting outside and getting all the paint together to see what we have and what we need. It's already 83, headed for 100+ again today, so won't stay out too long. The prep work always takes the longest and is the hardest part of painting.
Later, y'all,
Love,

Kelly I will never forget when I was teaching Kindergarten and our principal got on loud speaker and told the students about what just happened at Columbine with five minutes before I had to put them on their buses.
One little girl piped up I am not going to die. Out of the mouth of little ones. I remember telling them to talk to their parents about this.
To say the least I was not very happy with our principal.
I had to do the same thing years later with Sandy Hook. Learned if possible best to let children lead the discussion. Some of your children might be the ones to bring up heaven.
Children look to us and how we handle the tragedies of life.
I still agree with the author of the Safety Trap the more fit we are physcially and emotionally the better we are able to weather the storms.
I also think of the author of Emotional Genius and how she as a girl would help injured animals. Some she was able to help and she noticed those who would recover would shake as they came back to life. She would get sad over those she lost. Her mother reassured her by saying you gave them a safe place to let go.
Movement and reassuring your little ones they are loved and in a safe place is the best you can give them at this time. Letting them expressing themselves through art is also a great stress reliever.
Taking care of you is number one especially after your heart attack. By doing that you are being a great model for your charges.
We are here for you.4 -

Thanks Lisa, actually the company replacing our ac is bringing us a temporary room cooler thingy. Sets up in the room and exhausts out the window?!? IDK how it works, but it works. THANK GOD it's been GLORIOUS the last couple days. We didn't even need AC yesterday and this morning it's COOL!
Lanette, I think it might be a "room cooler" that they're letting us use.
OH MAN, Rita! That's just NUTZ! I can only imagine not sleeping well and having an asthma attack!
Tracey! That's exactly where I am! The times I've tried to ask, I'm told I'm prying to to butt-out. Now, several months later, I'm told that I didn't offer enough support. (for something I've never gone through myself and neither has she... so how was I supposed to know if neither of us have done this and I've been shut down in the past?!? Yeah, unfortunately, AC is shot. 10k later, we're getting new both on Thursday.
Fortunately Barbara, the heat has cooled here in MN, God's been on our side in that respect! And the new units are coming on Thursday!
OMG Kelly, I'm so sorry. I remember that when our SIL died. Our grandson's daycare provider was so kind and she created the most beautiful, little lesson on death for her children when Kolten came back. Still makes me cry to think about it. They were all so wonderful and loving.
Kolten's (grandson) team won third place in their baseball tournament last weekend. I was able to go to his game Friday night. Didn't go on Saturday. TOO HOT out in the sun, but they played almost to the end, obiviously and had a great season.
That's all for me. Carla, in MN4 -
In the upper 60's today, have most of the windows open. Its cool and quiet, but birds are saying hello. I plan on vacuuming, and tackling some spots (that husband made by where he sits). He has a tray thing he puts out for meals and he is always losing a bite or two!

Kelly- so sad to hear- I am sure you will tell the kids exactly what they can understand.
Yesterday was my bff's birthday- Laurie passed away almost 20 yrs ago- 38 yrs old, from a heart attack. She was one of my very best friends from the first day of 5th grade when i was the new kid at school after we moved to the valley. We did everything together from then on, including same major at college, teaching preschool at the same time(not the same place), moving to the same town(not a big deal, close to our hometown),did daycare after stopping teaching, we both wanted to work for ourselves.
Went through lots of drama over the years but always there for each other.
Talked her into going to the 20yr class reunion, she didn't want to go. That ended up being the last time I saw her. One Sunday I was thinking about calling her, decided not to. Her husband liked to listen in to our calls, said, no, I will call her in the morning. The next morning before I had a chance to make that call, my other bff called and said Laurie had passed away the night before.
Not calling her is something I regret still but has pushed me to make those calls/write those letters because you never know.
Today is my grandma's birthday-She had a LOT of grandkids but made sure everyone got a little special one on one time with her. She would take us girls, one at a time up to our cabin near Mendocino for a weekend- do craft projects which she LOVED any crafting, go up to Mendocino and Fort Bragg. She was in her 90's when she passed away. This is the view from our front window there:
The scale has finally moved- down one pound exactly- walked 43 miles last week, burned 15,282 calories. 507 active minutes. A LOT of work to loose one pound. Not giving up but cutting back a little, not walking the dog every day. I love walking him but not dealing with MIL and trying to get over early before my daycare girl gets here or take her with me(can't walk as much or as fast with her with me)
But, adding other walking in, more walks at the wetlands. Hoping to add in walks around the neighborhood on the days I don't walk the dog or have Zumba.
Going up to see mom this Friday night- only staying one night(as of now)- first time since all the drama with her room mate on Mother's day. Won't stay up the three nights like I used to. She was telling me an old friend/neighbor we grew up with showed up yesterday. Saw her in the yard so stopped in-visited for 2 hrs. Hadn't seen Mike in over 40yrs. He said he might come back next Sunday and mom told him I would be up there . I guess she forgot that I wasn't planning on staying that long.
I will play it by ear. If it is going good, I can stay an extra night but have to be home Sunday night.
MIL is getting better and is actually not being so mean to DH. Wondering how she is doing today. First time with dh leaving her while he does a full 8 hr shift and not in the middle of the night. He usually works 5hrs, starting at midnight. Today he starts at 4Am and gets off at 1PM- he said he was setting plates of food for her so she just had to warm them up. She needs to do more for herself. He told her she needs to start doing more because that isn't his home(she kept saying that)
Insomnia again- got to sleep about 2AM, awake at 7:30AM. May need to make some coffee. Hope I have enough energy to get through Zumba tonight.
Ok, rambled on way too long.
Have a wonderful day ladies.

We love Grocery Outlet- shop at at least one, two, sometimes four or more different ones in a week.
If you have more than one near you, be sure to check them out- each are individually owned so things are different and prices are different.
It is so fun seeing what deals we find. The biggest deal from one this weekend was the chunk of parm for just .99. Bought 6 and will put them in the freezer. Shaved some onto the salad I sent over to MIL. DH said it was really good. Will be great adding it to the Alfredo sauce tonight for ds.
