Yes @marisap2010 don't use up all your accumulated fitness on a training run. Just do the same estimated effort, and don't worry so much about the pace. The pace will come on race day from your taper, carb loading, adrenaline, and race atmosphere (and hopefully the NY weather in October) 😏6
-
Looking forward to a race report @7lenny7! Hope it went well!
@martaindale have a great time in Puerto Rico
Nice job getting your 14 mile run in ahead of schedule @Scott6255
@marisap2010 good luck with your marathon simulator run tomorrow. We had lovely weather this morning in upstate NY, it did get a little warmer than I thought but started out just beautiful. Hope it is even better for Wineglass. I accompanied my friend for part of her 22 mile run today to prep for that race. It's coming up!
@polskagirl01 great job getting a longer run than expected!
I also did a longer run than I thought I would today. I had no plan really, just meeting with friends and keeping them company. I ended up doing way more hills than I've done in many months and a total of 8.86 miles. I didn't bother to get up to 9, I was just happy I survived that much

Great run @Scott6255 !
@polskagirl01 You are doing great. I never could find the plan I was looking for to share with you. Who knows where it went.
@yirara I guess I'm glad you got your hike in, but be easy on that ankle. Are you sure you should be running on it? Not trying to tell you what to do, just don't want it to get worse.
@marisap2010 That planned run sounds really hard. Good luck. And, yes, I would take the temp and humidity into consideration and slow it down a bit if needed.
Sounds like you had a great run too @katharmonic !1 -
I haven't posted for a couple of days. I have gotten a few walks in and a run in the heat on Thursday. Yesterday was our last day with Beaux the Vizsla so I took him and Hobbes out for an early walk and it was already nearly 90F! There was a tropical storm off our coast and we had a chance of rain that wasn't supposed to hit until very late Friday or early Saturday.
Below is non running related explanation of why I didn't run today.
TLDR - late night at a very wet Duran Duran concertWe had tickets to the Hollywood Bowl last night and even though it was starting to rain at our house we headed off (we are about an hour away in normal conditions).
As a preface I will say we have been going to the Bowl for a summer concert series with our friends for more than 3 decades and never had it rain. The concerts go on rain or shine and umbrellas are not allowed.
When we left home it was raining a bit and Californians notoriously do not know how to drive in the rain so it took us almost an hour longer than normal to get there and we ended up parked in the middle of several rows of stacked parking (important later) and it was already raining.
Fortunately we had rain jackets with us and I grabbed some towels I had in the back for Hobbes. We met up with our friends and had a very wet but fun dinner sitting out in the rain with rivers of water running off the tablecloth... note it was also hot, around 95F. We broke heat records all over So CA yesterday as well as for rainfall. The rain mostly stopped for the cover band opener but started up heavily once Duran Duran came on... We finally gave up and left a little after half way through their set. We were wet walking in, wetter during dinner and soaked during the concert.
Note that to get to the Bowl from parking you have to walk about 0.75mile up hill and down to get back. By the time we got back to our car we were literally drowned rats. Our friends were parked at the front of a line and able to get right out. We were still sitting in the parking lot by the time they got home but at least it was dry in the car even though we were still pretty wet. By the time we were able to get out of the parking the freeways were a mess from the rain and crazy drivers and we didn't get home until after 1am.

Tomorrow should be a great running day, much cooler than it has been but very humid and I should have gotten some sleep!6 -
Got in a 5 mile recovery run this morning. Started at a good recovery pace, then was feeling good so I guess I got too excited. Tried to slow down but didn't do a very good job.

10.09 Sat 23°C 6.0km 54min
11.09 Sun 21°C 5.2km 45min
total: 15.38km
Went ok today. Not great, but ok. Did 3 intervals of 15 minutes, each a bit faster. With a bit of luck I'll be able to put in two runs next week, but that's it. Traveling home from vacation on Tuesday, maybe do a long mountain trip tomorrow, and will be away on Friday to Sunday. So... I guess this will be a not much running month.5 -

It was cool this morning when I ran. It was 65°F at the start and 68°F at the end. There was a bit of a north wind and it was cloudy. It really felt like a fall morning. It was such nice running weather that I ended up running 11 miles. I ran faster than I have for several months too. My pace always slows down in the summer and goes up in the winter. It was really nice to have a cool run after the excessive heat we have had this summer.
@martaindale Have fun in Puerto Rico!
@7lenny7 Good luck on your Ultra! I can't wait to read your race reports.
@shanaber I am so jealous! I love Duran Duran! I could do without sitting in the rain though.

September Goal: 60 miles
9/1 -- 3 miles
9/3 -- 3.84 miles
9/4 -- walked 5 miles at King's Dominion
9/6 -- 2.3 miles
9/8 -- 3 awful miles
9/10 -- walked 6.5 miles at King's Dominion
9/11 -- 4.5 miles
Total so far -- 28.14 (yes, I'm counting those days of walking!)
I told my daughter that the bad run the other day meant that today was going to be a great run and it absolutely was. We did W4D2 of C25K and ran the running sections without stopping. It was one 3 minutes run and then two 5 minute runs, which doesn't sound like much when you can go out and run for an hour+, but when you're coming back from not running for a couple of years, it's a freaking miracle!
We also got caught in the rain and came back absolutely soaked, but she learned how wonderful running in the rain can be. I also realized we were a lot faster today even though I was just focusing on running slowly to get through each running interval.
I love a good run day so much.6 -
Some friends and I attended a music festival this weekend and while fun it was a lot of walking and standing on pavement and me staying up way past my normal bedtime. Saturday we didn't go back until mid-day. Registration opened at noon for Peyton's Wild n Wacky 50k so we had to take care of that first. It sells out quickly but all six of us were able to register teams for the 2-person relay event. This morning I managed to eek out 6 miles. I didn't get out the door until 10:00 am which is very late for me. It did make lunchtime roll around quickly!
@scott6255 - great advice to @marisap2010 and great running this weekend.
@shanaber - The Hollywood Bowl sounds so glamourous! Even in the rain!4 -
@shanaber That does look like some heavy rain and sounds pretty miserable to be in for hours. The concert looks cool though. Glad you made it home safely through all that miserable traffic. I think you had a great excuse to not run today!
@yirara Sounds like you are doing great and running when you can. Sometimes, you just can't fit it all in.
@AlphaHowls Are you getting bored with 13.1 miles? LOL
Great run @kgirlhart . Glad you have cooler weather.
@rps67 You are doing awesome. I think running that much after not running for years is fantastic! Glad you both had a good run today. You need those after a horrible one.
@Teresa502 Did you go to Rhythm and Roots? I saw that was this weekend, but have never been. Glad you all got to register for the 50K. Is that the one you have done before?

I haven't posted about my activity since last Monday, when I ran 7 miles. This week has been busy, so only got in a couple more runs, but did at least walk a fast mile every day.
I just didn't have the time for a run today. One of the unscheduled things I did was go to see my newest neighbor, who was born last night, at home (planned that way with a midwife). He weighed 7lbs 8 oz. He's a lot smaller than he looks in the picture below the spoiler, if you are interested. Also in the spoiler are pictures of a cool mushroom that I saw growing along the edge of my driveway while I was walking today.
Well, never mind. For some reason I can't get the pictures to upload. I'll try again tomorrow, if I think about it.
5 -
@shanaber I also would love to see Duran Duran, but that sounds miserable in the rain. I hope you got to hear some good songs and enjoyed it as much as you could while soaking wet. I have been singing "Come Undone" in my head since I read your post.
@rps67 yay for a good run day! And even in the rain. Glad it was a better day for you and your daughter, that's a great lesson in not giving up.
@teresa502 good job getting your 6 miles after the tiring music festival weekend. Sounds like a fun one though! Glad you all got in to the 50k relay.
@quilteryoyo good job keeping up your fast walk streak even if you haven't had time for a lot of running. I'm sorry your pic upload didn't work because I wanted to see the new baby and a cool mushroom
I had another day of running a little farther than intended. Not nearly as much as yesterday though. I told my friend I'd do 3-4 miles and have coffee after. She somehow suckered me into almost 5 miles so she could finish her planned 6.4 (she always adds .4 to her training plan for mental toughness I think - getting that extra .2 after 26 miles will not be so bad if you've always added .4 is the thinking. Good for her, I say - she's so strong and determined, I really admire her dedication to training and what she's accomplished.

Thank goodness that 20 miles is over! I slept horribly the last couple of nights (thank you stress over everything!) and really wasn't feeling great this morning. I ended up doing 13.3 this morning and then taking a break for a few hours and going back out to finish. The break seemed to help, as I felt a lot better during the second chunk. I really didn't bother with the marathon simulation pace (thanks to everyone's advice) and just tried run what felt right considering the conditions. My taper starts now, and I'm going to break out the marathon shoes this week to start breaking them in.
@shanaber I'm sorry your concert was rainy. I bet Duran Duran was awesome.
Awesome run @kgirlhart!
@rps67 Great job on your run!
@AlphaHowls Send me some of your energy!!
@quilteryoyo How exciting to have a new baby neighbor!7 -
@quilteryoyo and @katharmonic - I was actually surprised the video came out so well despite the rain. Honestly from the video I don't think it even looks like it is raining. 'Come Undone' Is one of my favorite Duran Duran songs so I was really happy the video turned out so well.
@Teresa502 - The Hollywood Bowl is one of my favorite venues and we always go with a group of friends so it is really fun. My mom used to go when she was a little girl with her parents and grandparents. I always think of her when we are sitting there, like we are sharing some of the same space somehow.
@rps67 - I love a good rain run! Glad you and your daughter enjoyed yours!
@7lenny7 - Congratulations on your Ultra! What a fantastic accomplishment! Can't wait to read the race report for both races!
@lou2you2 - if you are getting blisters I highly recommend the merino wool socks (whatever your fav brand is). I happen to like SmartWool but it seems like most brands have a version. I also agree with trying the heel lock lacing. If you go looking for new running shoes I would look for ones that advertise a narrow heel and check the reviews from women to see if they really meet that. Many brands have just used a cut down version of the men's shoe last to make their women's shoes and they are typically wider in the heel.
I left Hobbes at home this morning, he wasn't too interested in coming with me. So after realizing I had lost the ear tip to my Powerbeats and hunting all over the house for the extras I finally got out the door about an hour later than planned. I did a warmup walk to the trail then ran the trail and part of the way home using a 60/30 run walk interval. Initially it was nice. We have remnants of the hurricane/tropical storm hanging around so it was cloudy and humid but only in the mid 70's. Once the sun broke through the clouds though it felt like it was trying to fry me. Coming back I stopped in the shade a few times trying to cool down and also stopped at the restroom which thankfully had cold water in the tap that I splashed on my face and arms. But the time I was heading home it was nearly 85F with 80% humidity and dew point 70. I planned to jump in the pool to cool off but when I got home realized it was full of leaves and dirt from the storm so I took a cool shower instead. I am hoping tomorrow will be a little cooler and later this week is supposed to be much cooler. Just over 6 miles altogether today.
Also for the RTY gang - we are heading across TX and quickly approaching Dallas where we can wave to all our TX friends!7 -
I went for a little trail run Saturday. Finished with 52.1 miles for the day. I finished!!! It was, by far, the hardest race I've ever run and I'm in a bit of pain at the moment, but not as bad as I expected.
I loved the experience, in spite of the low points and the pain. I'm hooked on the distance and hope to do 2 or 3 per year going forward.
More details to come in a race report soon, but one of the highlights was that I BEAT COURTNEY DAUWALTER! Yes, she was there racing in the same 50 mile race and I beat her. In fact she was only ahead of me for a half mile or the entire race. I guess I'm an elite runner now, LOL. There's a good explanation for it though, which I'll share in the race report13 -
CONGRATS @7lenny7!!! That's a huge accomplishment!
I was going to bike today, but only made it to the bottom of the hill before I somehow wrecked. I'm ok. Stuff hurts but not too bad. Arm sleeves, capri-length tights, & cycling gloves helped minimize a lot of the scratches! I'm icing my face and wrist and observing the wrist to make sure it's just bruised and nothing more. But my bike has a smashed bell and broken gear shift/brake assembly, so I parked it right next to hubby's work bench 😆
Oh! And my watch! Fortunately, most of the damage was to the cheap plastic screen protector, which I can easily replace!8 -
@7lenny7 what an accomplishment!
@polskagirl01 oh no, I hope the wounds are all superficial and heal quickly. Not nice
I've been off the beaten tracks on a 'vacation' most of the week, have speed-read and liked and hugged etc but missed way too much to comment.
There was a lot of unexpected stress to the week due to breakdowns and teenagers and meltdowns and ugh just about everything, but I got a couple of runs in, one in the first place we stayed which I didn't like much and another (tough but blissful) in the mountains. We spent Thursday to Sunday morning at a campsite tucked up in the mountains with zero phone reception. It's beside a river, and deer and wild boar wander down through the campsite to drink in the evenings and rummage about at night. I went for a run one evening, timed just right so it wasn't too hot and I got back just before it got dark. Was rather worried about what kind of wildlife I might encounter on the trail, but all I saw was a snake crossing the track. I did hear what sounded like boar grunting in the trees a couple of times but clapped my hands and coughed to make sure they could hear me and run away lol.
Few photos below. There are more on Strava. The last one if from the first place we went. Brownie points for anyone who recognises it!5 -
Good morning all. Hope everybody had a great weekend.
I gave my Hammies and glutes the weekend off. Still a bit sore, but taking it easy.
@shanaber - Duran Duran! Awesome!
Ran 4.5M today
7 -
Super impressive @7lenny7 on your 50M race!
@polskagirl01 ouch! Glad your fall didn't do too much damage (to you, your bike, or your watch).
Great job on getting your 20 miler in @marisap2010! I am NOT looking forward to mine.
@shanaber the Duran Duran concert looked fun (except for all the rain). The venue is awesome!
Looks like a nice vacation @eleanorhawkins. Great pics, but I have no idea where the last one is from.2 -
Another rainy morning so I opted for a mile walk on the treadmill after lower body strength class.quilteryoyo wrote: »@Teresa502 Did you go to Rhythm and Roots? I saw that was this weekend, but have never been. Glad you all got to register for the 50K. Is that the one you have done before?
Yes, we get tickets every year to Rhythm and Roots. There are so many good groups, many playing simultaneously. Also, lots of merchandise vendors, food trucks and all the shops and restaurants are open. And, yes, this is the 50k that I've done a few times before. The first time I participated as an individual completing the entire 50k solo but the past three years, I've been part of a 2-person relay which is much more enjoyable! Welcome to your new neighbor and yes, we need pictures!!
@polskagirl01 - Sorry about the bike wreck. Glad you didn't break anything!
@7lenny7 - congrats on your 50 miler! Wahoo! I think I know why you beat Courtney (I saw a picture on social media) but still..... that's major!!
Yay for taper time @marisap2010!
@eleanorhawkins - I'm clueless as to the picture location also but it does look beautiful. Those wild boars look scary!
3 -
@katharmonic Great job in letting your friend sucker you into running further than intended. You are doing great and sounds like she is also. I'll try the pictures again this morning, but my internet is being finicky again today.
Nice job getting in your 20 mile run @marisap2010 . When is your race?
You did great getting in your run @shanaber . Also glad the bathroom was available with cool water. You are doing great. Thanks for the RTY update.
Congratulations @7lenny7 ! It's awesome that you beat Courtney. I hope you recover quickly and am looking forward to your race report.
@polskagirl01 Oh no! That watch shows how bad the fall was. I hope everything is only minor injuries and heals quickly.
Looks like a nice vacation, even if you had to deal with a lot of drama @eleanorhawkins . Love the pictures. I would be concerned about the boar, but glad all you have to do is make noise to scare them away.
@tarun_yadavA Great run and it pays to take a couple of days off now and then.
Nice getting in a treadmill walk @Teresa502 ! I may have to look into getting tickets to Rhythm and Roots next year.
Here is a try at the pictures. Yeah, it worked! Darn internet issues.
Me and baby boy Koskovich. They haven't named him yet.

Further away for a better size perspective. It is probably about 3 - 4 inches across, so not small.

Last morning in PR. I got up early to get my run in, which was looping around my friend’s neighborhood. It is gated so I was limited in how far I could go without getting caught outside a gate. The weather here is pretty similar to Houston, hot and humid. But, because it’s farther south, they get less temperature change from night to day. So at sunrise, it was already 78F but the high is only 88F today. That summer conditioning saved me today. My legs were a little sore from our hike yesterday, which included a fair bit of scrambling. And the neighborhood is quite hilly, so I took it slow.
As for the hike, we went to El Yunque national forest. The last time I was here it was still almost totally closed due to damage from hurricane Maria. It is a rainforest, so lush greenery, rivers with clear cool water and little waterfalls everywhere. We went down a rock slide and my friend jumped from a little cliff into a pool in the river. I really dislike dropping into water over my head so I sat that one out. Absolutely beautiful hike and a fun group of people. We couldn’t take phones or anything on the hike because of the scrambling and all the water activities but the guide took a lot of pictures.
I’ll come back and drop a couple pics in the spoiler.5 -
@lou2you2 Re: blisters and shoes. I also love brooks. My main shoe is the ghost but I have a pair of launch that I use for speed work and the treadmill and have used glycerins for recovery shoes in the past. I wear an 8.5-9 in normal shoes and a 9.5 in brooks for reference if you can’t try any on. They have a great returns policy, 90 days, so no harm done if you try them out and need to return. I also currently have a pair of Hoka Clifton’s in my rotation. I use them for recovery runs. They are too heavy and squishy for me for anything long or high effort but they feel great on tired feet. I would also really recommend looking at your socks if you get blisters. I LOVE injinji socks. They are the toe socks. I thought it would be weird feeling but you don’t notice the toes once you are running and they have cut down on the rubbing between the ends of my toes a lot. I also have a couple pairs of Feetures which I like a lot as well.2
-
@7lenny7 I am so impressed by your 50 miler!! That is awesome! Congrats on finishing and becoming an elite!!1
-
@eleanorhawkins I love how we both go on vacation and end up taking blurry pictures of wild boars5
-
@polskagirl01 lol yeah, they were running through the campsite, plus my phone camera sucks!
They, and the deer, are not at all aggressive, in fact they're way too tame because they're used to wandering around the campsite. It's sad because they've learned there is food there, and in the winter when nobody goes up there in the snow they starve :-(

I'm guessing the ones we saw in August were similarly tame because of the touristy location, but they're huge and my experiences with boars have not been friendly, so I didn't stick around close to them with only a rented bicycle to defend myself (and my child) for long enough to find out. These boars were following their little paths straight to the trash cans, knocking them over, and pigging out.3 -

I ran 2 miles this morning for my streak. I have been walking on my non-run days, but it was 65°F and I just couldn't resist. Plus it was still dark and I don't mind running in the dark, but I don't really like walking in the dark.

I didn't have to go to work until 1 today, so got up at 8:15 with the intent of doing a 6 mile run before leaving. Well, I had to make a couple of phone calls and do a couple of other things, so got a later start than I intended. I did a 4/1 min run/walk with the walks at 3.8 mph, on the treadmill. The runs I did at 4.2-4.7, then 4.2,4.8,4.2,4.9, 4.2 and ended with 5.0 mph. After running about 1:15 m:s at 5.0 mph I felt my right hand hit something, looked down to see the kill switch falling off of the bar. I felt like it was slow motion for a couple of seconds – like those commercials where they spill something that is heading toward an important document or their cell phone (don’t know why they don’t just pick up the item that is about to get soaked) and they yell “noooooo” and crab a paper towel. Then, screen was blank and the info on time and distance was gone. I knew I was close to 4 miles, if not over and over 55 min. So, I just started it back up and ran another 3 min at 5.0 mph and then did my cool down walk. I used the paces above to calculate distance and the Garmin Connect graph to figure the time, so all is approximate today. (I did the calculations while the kids slept at daycare. LOL) Anyway, per my calculations, I ran 4.27 miles in 59:15 minutes and walked a total of 0.70 miles for warm up and cool down. Not the 6 miles I had planned, but it was better than 2 miles.
In other news, my step-granddaughter had her little baby girl today, in Florida. Elianna Sage was born at 5:12 this afternoon, weighed 8 lb, 10 oz, and was 14.25 inches long. A big girl, but not as big as her sister who weighed in at 9 lb 10 oz.
@martaindale That sounds like a great hike. Great job on getting in a 5 mile run this morning.
Nice job on keeping up your streak @kgirlhart . Sounds like great temperatures for a run. Curious as to why you don't mind running in the dark, but not walking?4
