WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR OCTOBER 2022

It is close to the time that DH needs to move from his current health care facility. I am concerned about what comes next.
Our current apartment is a good possibility. It is comfortable and pleasant. It is a very good choice.
If that doesn’t work for us, we own an RV that is on our daughter’s property. That might work, depending on the weather, but fall & winter weather is worrisome.
Right now it is one step at a time. My wish is for DH and I to be safe and at home together.

If you are a praying person, please say a prayer for my sister who is 9 years younger than me. She had to have exploratory surgery this week on her lung and had to have the top lobe removed because of cancer. At the moment, she is having a difficult time breathing. She did not want chemo/radiation because she had that in her 30's after breast cancer.

Communication – for a conversation, 1st choice is face to face, 2nd phone, 3rd a letter (paper and pen letter or email) 4th text. For just basic info… like sorry I am running late be there in 5 Text is the winner with a phone call next.

It kind of depends on the type of communication for me.
Phone calls are a definite no for me. My hearing is going and phone calls remove all the other cues I need to carry on a conversation. Plus I find them intrusive and needlessly time consuming.
Face to face is good if I have to explain something and hear something a bit complicated. I will often walk to a clinic to book an appointment face to face because I might need to explain something.
And I did a presentation to my area at work this week for something I'm working on ... that sort of face to face is good too. I can present, and then do a questions and answer thing. It's often more efficient than a series of emails.
I like Zoom and Teams meetings because I can do something else at the same time. Plus I don't have to leave work or home to go to the meetings. I had 4 such meetings this week. 1 work meeting which I attended from home because I wasn't well, and 3 "club" meetings: 2 bicycle and 1 bees.
Emails are probably my favourite method of communication. I am a quick typist (between 60 and 70 wpm depending on what I'm typing), and emails allow me to say everything, and then double check it for spelling, grammar and content. I can include pictures, diagrams, attachments, links, etc.
I used to write a lot of letters, and people comment on how good my handwriting is, but my writing speed is significantly slower than my typing speed. Plus then I've got to do the whole mailing the letter thing which is also time consuming.
I don't text or messenger very often, but will use them for quick notes to/from a few people. If I want to have an online, typed conversation, I'll switch to email.

Rainy day in Tassie.
Figured it was a good day to clean the bathroom.
I've read that Hillmark Cerapol Ceramic Glass & Induction Cooktop Cleaner is also good for cleaning the inside of glass shower doors and walls and so I tried it by cleaning a panel a couple weeks ago and it did seem to do the job. Today I scrubbed out the shower with it, and it's sparkling.
Our tub (separate from the shower), I use to wash my feet and legs after I've been working in the garden, so it often has a little layer of sand. I plan to rinse that down today too.
The bathroom is always the first room I'll clean and the one I'll clean the most often.

Machka, Thanks for the tip about using ceramic glass cleaner on the shower panels! I'm going to try that.
Dear Katla, Just remember that you have an entire support system to help you and your husband make discharge plans that will work for both of you. I am thinking that your support team already has a plan in mind for where you will live after your husband is discharged - probably the assisted living apartment you are already in - but if you aren't sure, just ask someone. Ask your daughter or your husband's nursing team. It will all work out. You are not alone; you have many helpers.

Ginny - I'm wishing you a really great recovery from your operation. Take your time and be kind to yourself.
I'm starting to put together my next book. Slowly. Very slowly. I had an idea for the intro today while I was on the exercise bike, but because I didn't write it down straight away, I forgot it.
We found the dead mouse on the stairs just now. It hadn't appeared since Monday morning, so I thought it had crawled away to die. I do feel sorry that we went down the poison route. Poor thing. We now have a humane trap for any future appearances of any friends.

Ugly news at the DDS:Deep pockets and not the good kind. While gums don’t bleed, 3D Xrays show loss despite daily brushing and flossing. I’m afraid its alendronate related. Will buy WaterPik this weekend. Have started spritzing liquid B12 on the problem areas and researching beneficial pre- and pro-biotics to balance the pathogenic ones. Will cost around $1300 for first set of planing/scaling, then re-evaluate in 3 months. Thankful to have my teeth, will gird up my loins. Wish my DDS would administer the gas, it always helps me to be elsewhere. Alas he won’t.
Packed up huge box to donate, smaller box to send to nephew. Do NOT look around and see how much more stuff there is. One foot in front of the other. Don’t know why but somewhere along the line I stopped playing music CDs. Snagged a few from the “maybe” pile and have really enjoyed listening to them while I compute. At least one line dance compilation has been salvaged from the donate NOW pile. One Grateful Dead album has two songs on it that I enjoyed, not sure that’s enough to keep it…
Macha you would be welcome but we might need these instead It is NEVER a good day to clean the bathroom
Heather Was that “Happy Birthday” the restaurant gave you on a cake? Your tea towel wars made me laugh. Mostly Joe and I tolerate each other’s preferences, but yesterday I announced, firmly, that I wanted the bathroom door free to close and no longer bungie-corded open. We’ve only lived here five years.
Rosemarie your “some dusting” for your son’s visit inspires me. I need to do a frenzied thorough cleaning Monday and Tuesday before guests arrive Wednesday. Oh well, its only once every year or two
Lanette Love Bob and Brad, the most (annoying but expert) famous physical therapists on the internet.
Annie and Betsy do you stand up on your mini elliptical or do it sitting down?
Tracey two cupboards before supper. Wow!
Carol (gentle hugs) and prayers for your sister Kay. Hard decision to accept.
Thanks for the retirement humor.
Lisa Thanks for the link, trying not to watch the video as there is already more to do in the remaining 3 days before company comes…no spare 48 hrs…
Margaret and Mary thanks for your TENS research. Intriguing!
Katla crossing fingers, toes, eyes, legs, knees whatever. Hopeful ((hugs)).
Rebecca congratulations on taking off those 5 lbs the hard way. When do you next see the MD? Please ask him/her about the high fiber foods, Recommended for diverticulosis, NOT for diverticulitis until it improves.
Vicki praying you get to take your planned time off. You’ve earned it. In spades.
Allie be not deceived. My place is a mess too. The reorg barely revealed the tip of the iceberg of cleaning and purging that’s needed. Trying to focus on one little bit at a time and not get overwhelmed but honestly, I just want to retreat to bed with a good book and a box of chocolates.
Debbie con VERY grats on the BP NSV!
Rori the last time I used my oven’s self-cleaning function, Joe smelled the “smoke” and it woke him up thinking the house was on fire. Now it’s on the list for the next time Joe has to be away overnight
Tina Brilliant Tea box solution to the cable problem. Well done!
Ginny, glad to hear surgery went well and no sling needed
Kim so glad to hear from you, been missing you. Look forward to your craft faire pics. Moving fieldstone? Wow, just wow. Those beer bread variations have my stomach growling. Ditto yours to Lisa, but I’d be ashamed to have her see my home.
Terri 3 panes of glass in the oven door? :noway:
Karen love yours to Katla.
Communication: As a fairly fast (but not so accurate as Machka) typist I prefer email for longer, more detailed communication (fire district, church, dog group, personal finance). Both text and FB messenger with nephews, sister-in-law, god daughter and friends. WhatsApp with one friend to see pics of her Scottish grandson. Voice calls as rarely as I can get away with it but every month or so I give my sister-in-law the gift of listening. Reminds me to be grateful for our low drama life.
Time to get a few hours of sleep before starting the mega laundry/cleaning frenzy.

Barbara Mine is a stand up elliptical/stepper. I have it between two recliners so I can put a hand on the back of either one if I need to steady myself. I do lots of walking but this elliptical uses different muscles in my legs and glutes and abs,

While the rest of my house can be less than clean, my bathroom needs to be clean otherwise I just feel icky in there. This time, I did a lot of cleaning, right down to scrubbing my combs and decanting those 3/4 empty conditioner bottles, then tossing them.
I usually take care of the bathroom, and my husband takes care of the toilet room. I'm less keen on doing the toilet room, but will touch it up now and then.
Just to explain a bit ... in many Australian homes, the bathroom and toilet room are separate like in the floor plan below. That's not our floor plan, but it is an example of how bathrooms and toilet rooms are set up.

DH called me this morning. We are both worrying about our heath provider situations. We both want to be in the apartment. Keeping our fingers crossed for a good outcome.4

Barbara- it was a slate with the greeting written on it in icing. The candle was stuck in a macaron. They gave us two complementary chocolate truffles.
Nice they bothered as we only had the inclusive lunch menu, not a la carte.
Is one-off cleaning a possibility in your location? Obviously pricey, but once it's done it's so much easier to keep it nice.
You have all inspired me to have a go at the inside of my oven. You may remember I did the glass door a couple of weeks ago.

Morning, afternoon or evening, y'all...
Heather - your images of your results are what inspired me to clean the oven door--I just couldn't stop there! Which really is just one of the hazard to tasks like this for me: They take up all my mental energy as well as physical. If I'm not working on the task, I'm thinking about it or going to buy something necessary to complete it. Or driving my husband into boredom by talking about it... bless his heart.
Anyway, all that effort might seem wasted on cleaning an oven, but hey, the oven's clean, and I probably won't think about it again for another five years. Which will drive my best friend around the bend... She's the one who believes in maintaining strict cleanliness so she seldom has to do a major project like that. I will be getting a lecture today on how to get an oven clean on a regular basis so these projects don't have to be done at all. She also owns a Roomba, and her entire house is arranged on that--her chairs live upside down on the table so the automatic vacuum cleaner can get under there. All large furniture pieces like couches etc. were bought with tall enough legs that the vacuum could get under them, and so on. I try not to live my life around any technology, I think it should adapt to me.
And to Kim and Barbara, I charge consultant rates - $25 per 15 minutes. Oven cleaner is cheaper! For a little incentive, though, I just pulled buttermilk biscuits out of the oven. They usually take 30 minutes at 400 degrees. They took 22 minutes, and were nearly overdone.
OK - while talking to y'all, I've gotten the second load of laundry in to wash, and I need to get the first load out to the clothesline. I also stopped a minute and looked at my phone (speaking of technology) and finally figured out why it kept turning black and white each morning, no color at all. I inadvertently set my "bedtime" setting on Android to end at 7 a.m., and that was one of the choices.
Love y'all,

I have found out that my sister's lung tumor will not require chemo/radiation as it is slow growing and they removed it before it spread. Prayers answered! They just advised her to keep up a walking routine and use a spirometer to keep her lung velocity up.
Lisa ~ Your oven cleaning makes me sad about the condition of my house! I used to be the best housekeeper around but sadly no more! DH refuses to let cleaners in so we will just keep it like it is.
Katla ~ I sure hope your husband will be able to be with you in your apartment soon. That apartment sounds like a great place for y'all.
Barbara ~ The needed dental procedure sounds tough! I hate going to the dentist and just keep putting if off although I really like my dentist.
Allie ~ Love the photos of Miles surrounded by the Fall flowers.
Ginny ~ My mom had that surgery and was in the hospital for a couple of days. I am glad yours was out-patient and that you were able to go home. Pray for good healing and no pain.
Going to meet my two friends for an outside picnic at the Chattahoochee River park today. It should be warm around lunch time. Have no idea what I am taking to eat. On Saturday, will watch my 11yr old GD cheer at the nearby high school. Sunday, we will meet my Son's family for his birthday dinner. So, this will be a busier than usual weekend.

Carol - I'm so glad the news for your sister is good! Also glad to see you out and about with friends... the pandemic has been tough on a lot of you who are city dwellers, I know... I hope it's a lovely visit, and happy birthday in advance to your son!

Carol: So glad the news is fairly good for your sister, Kay. Now you will be able to enjoy the week end a little better. My son has been enjoying Top Golf in Atlanta. Do you know anyone who has been doing this? Apparently it is very popular.
Katla: I hope your husband is discharged back to living with you soon. The assisted living where you are sounds like a good set up.
Rebecca: I hope you are feeling better.
Vicki: The employee is just not a good fit for the culture at your place of employment. She will move on ...maybe because she has no choice...and perhaps find a place that suits her better. I hope you are able to see your granddaughter this week end.
Kim: The Beer Bread sounds delicious.
Barbie: A walk with a friend nearly every morning is a treasure!
Lanette: Hope your neighbor enjoys the new gym!
Machka9--I would do that....open a cupboard and appreciate how the towels are folded!
Well I looked at our budget with all the caretaking costs and gave myself an anxiety attack! I am doing better now partly because we have another sunny beautiful day outside! Yesterday I made pumpkin lattes with pumpkin, vanilla, brown sugar, milk, cinnamon and coffee. Soooo tempting to add more brown sugar to make it sweeter but I resisted!6 -

Saga sent our luggage labels, along with the time we will get picked up. It makes it feel nearer!
Time passes so fast these days.
I also managed to spend my £10 gift voucher I was sent by an online site I use. I didn’t want to buy something that was more expensive than I can get elsewhere, just for the sake of it, but I found a double fronted, long sleeved, V neck, tee-shirt in teal. Free postage. So it ends up as £22, which I'm happy with. I love double fronted as I don't wear a bra. Perfect for the cruise!

Heather: I am not familiar with double fronted shirts. I do love the color of this shirt. This will be great for the cruise and look great on you!0

Carol- that is amazing news for your sister. Prayers really do work!!
Heading out to go walk the wetlands for an hour or so before Ezie gets out of school. Will walk again at the park with a friend this evening. Make up for not walking yesterday.
Will walk the dog tomorrow to get my 5th day of activity for the week.
Spent an hour or so cleaning some of the pantry shelves in the garage. Trying to get rid of the temptations for the mice/rats. Really need to get them organized so I know what I have so I don't think I am out and buy more. Tossed the expired stuff- Will take a few more days to get this side cleaned out and then really organize it.

Worked but then since I didn’t need to go to the soup kitchen, I was able to get to the gym...yea! So I did a spinning workout. I’ll go for a walk in a little bit. Just work tomorrow. Hopefully, I can at least get a walk in.
Communication: I prefer to communicate by email. This way I can address it when it works into my schedule. Sometimes I find a phone call is best, especially if I’m inquiring about the health of someone.
Barbara – how horrible the bone loss! The good thing is that it was caught early so it can be addressed. If it is alendronate related, fortunately, there are other things you can use other than biphosonates. I take the injection of prolia. That’s probably not a guarantee of bone problems, tho. At least it isn’t a biphosonate, tho
Cleaning ovens – I’ll wait for a cold day to run the self-clean function. I really want to get my glass clean. But there is a part of me that is hesitant to remove the drawer.
Carol – what good news about your sister! Have a great visit
katla – how wonderful!
Heather – really like the t-shirt. I will wear a t-shirt with a v-neck. I really can’t stand to have something all around my neck. But I need to wear one at BK. Well, they pay me to wear one so I’ll wear it.
Speaking of BK: a while ago there was water dripping from the ceiling. First on me, then on the food. So one of the employees suggested that I do the prep in the other sink. When I asked the “manager” what we were going to do she just said “I don’t know”. That’s when the other employee suggested the other sink.
Well, it’s started dripping again. I really think it’s the a/c. That’s what it was the other time. Anyway, the water was dripping on me so I asked if I could do the prep in the other sink. Angel (a manager) told me “OK” so I did. When another manager came in she said that I couldn’t, that if Ren (some sort of inspector for BK) ever saw that he’d be upset. Well, if the department of health ever saw water from an unknown source dripping in the prep area, it really wouldn’t matter what Ren thought. The water is dripping on me right now.
I think I’m going to text the store manager and ask her what plan “B” will be if the dripping continues. I hate to bother her, but I need to know what I should do.
Off to check my email then probably a walk.
Michele NC

Has anyone heard from Beth? I miss her! I hope she has been able to get her mom in a better place near where she lives.
Michele ~ I don't know how the BK can pass an inspection with that leak.
