WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR JANUARY 2023

Hello!
Things are going well - I have made it to the gym every day since Monday. I have been tracking everything since Sunday. I also started back to work on Tuesday but it’s pre-semester so no students, no classes, and no completely crazy schedule. We’ll see how things go in a couple weeks when the craziness starts.
I also have started working to declutter the house. I found a neat app that assigns one small task each day and I’ve been able to do that daily too. Hoping I can keep it up once the crazy schedule starts.
The weather finally cleared up a bit today in southwest Ohio. It has been so gloomy and rainy the past couple days but we saw sun today. It has been unseasonably warm and I wish it would stay but I guess the weather is predicting snow for the weekend. Hoping I have most of the work stuff done by the weekend so I can spend time crafting (I need to start a quilt project for a sew along & I need to make a greeting card).
Hope everyone is having a good day! Lisa, I’m glad to see Bella is back!
Jane in Wilmington, Ohio4 -
Yay! Bella is back!!!!!!
Julie What Lisa said, though I understand. I disappeared too ;( Missed you all and figured I am worth the read time! Missed you!
Athena has beautiful eyes too!
Jane Even though I was at work today, the sunshine was wonderful coming in the windows! It was sure getting chilly when I left work though.
Annie You popped in my mind tonight as I came home exhausted! I didn't want to do anything, but I pulled up my big girl panties and just got started. Dinner cooked, laundry going, kitchen cleaned, lunches packed. At least feeling better about things done.
Anyone else really confused about what day it is this week? I would understand if I had been off work on Monday, but I worked. Yesterday the time seemed like it was moving super slow even though I was productive. Today has felt like Thursday all day. Weird!
Speaking of Thursday....my oldest daughter remembered me saying that I would like to go see Anastasia in Cincinnati. She has season tickets with a friend and they were going opening night. Well, she put in for "lottery tickets" that the theater allows ticket holders to put in for. She WON! She and I are going tomorrow evening together. As I have been feeling better since I am eating better and I know it will be a late night (an hour drive home after theater) I went ahead a made up two small containers in the event that I need snacks on the drive home, berries and grapes, and cheese cubes and crackers. May not need/want them, but they will be available. Dinner will be dependent on traffic. I am leaving work early, but Cincinnati traffic is totally unpredictable! We meet just south of Cincinnati, try to grab a bite to eat, park my car, and she drives us to Cincinnati. She drives Cincy several times a week so knows her way around much better. I am more than happy to let her drive! That will be a good end to a day that starts with a new doctor appointment as my last doctor left the practice.
I reckon I should get off here and join DH for a little while in the man cave since I won't be home tomorrow night.
Prayers!
Hugs!
Much Love!
Welcomes!

Julie, Glad to see you again . I hope you will read what you can and respond or not, just so you stay connected.2
-
Lanette: Thank you for responding. I think I would benefit from a widow's group where the women are not newly grieving. Women who are getting on with it and doing things. My family is up North so I think more support will be needed.
Grandmallie: I don't understand all the family dynamics you mention, but I sure hope it works out for everyone and that Miles stays happy!
Tracey: Your family is very different than my family. My family keeps everything polite and arms length. I can't imagine anyone coming in at 2 am and saying everyone is going to have a cup of coffee!
Michele: Congrats on keeping weight stable
LosingWeightForGood: Welcome!
Barbara: Thanks for the hugs and prayers
Heather: Having an apartment by the sea for awhile sounds great to me! Hope the move goes well for your son and DDIL. I have a paid for writing course paid for at the beach next October. I can cancel and re-book if I need to, but just having a vacation at the beach paid for is nice!
Kylia: Great on getting rid of 5 things in your house. I have decluttered alot. We have a storage room above the garage that needs to be gone through!
Rori: Go Nuggets Basketball!
Karen: Congrats on your new granddaughter
Katla: Glad your husband is out of the hospital
Muttergans: I do the snacking on the cheese out of the fridge. And if you just take a little and melt it, to me it is just as satisfying. So it is a nervous habit for me.
I did get some blood drawn today and sat and watched a movie. The movie took place up North in an area where I spent some time, so it was fun. It was about an alcoholic realtor who comes to terms with her drinking and also gets back together with a high school sweetheart!
Best,
Rosemarie from Georgia

Allie — DH and I are in the same building with 2 separate floors. He is in the ground floor and is in the area with highly skilled RN’s. My floor does not have RN’s. There are many apartments here for people who are healthy and come and go in their cars.
Rosemarie —Welcome!
MutterGans — “No” is a powerful word. Walking your dog is an excellent plan.
Annie — Congrats on your exercise calories, WTG!
Rori — DH is here & is doing better!!! Three cheers! I am grateful. ❤️
Kylia — Moving on to a new page is exciting. It is good seeing your post. ⭐️
Heather— It is now 8pm in Illinois, USA. DH is sleeping & I am delighted. He is getting good rest. 😊
Barbara — I like your 2023: “Be of good
cheer+ Move more, fuel better, live now! 😘
Pip — Good news for the 6 month check from the DR. 10# tumor removal & all is well. THREE CHEERS! 💖
DH is home and I am happy. ❤️6 -
Worked today but the plan for tomorrow is to do Katina Hunter’s Interval Party DVD. After work stopped at the vet – they still didn’t have the rest of Loki’s med. Then went to Aldi, then home and the vet’s office called to say the med was in so I just finished walking down there to get it. On the way home stopped at Food Lion to get grapefruit on sale (for me) and these butter noodles (for Vince).
Losingweight – welcome!
Karen – congrats and more congrats
silvergirl – welcome.
Allie – why would Kyle want Carmine out of the house? This is his child!
Lisa – when I first saw Haley’s picture, I could have sworn it was one of Heather’s, it’s so good
Lisa – congrats on your new range. I haven’t used my convection a lot but I would like to get more comfortable with it. I did try making french fries like in an air fryer and they came out quite good, so with a convection oven you could very well be able to get rid of the air fryer. They take up so much room, anyway
Julie – welcome back!
Had Newcomer bowling tonight
Vicki – many years ago I gave up white flour. It was very hard at first. I was always the person who if you put a bread basket in front of me, it’ll be gone. To this day, I would much prefer a whole wheat roll and I don’t want a lot. You can do this (giving up games). It’ll be hard at first, but after a while it’ll be no big deal.
Julie – welcome. You’re doing great
Debbie – thanks for the update on Destiny. She is so brave to be going thru so much. Makes me grateful that all I have to worry about is my weight. Puts things in perspective. I can walk and I’m not in excruciating pain. My heart breaks for her
Am supposed to volunteer at the Green Room tomorrow. Afterwards, I’ll make a donation to the Humane Society of some cat food that we have. Vince didn’t think they’d take it because it wasn’t in a bag. Actually, he didn’t realize that I gave them some in an opened bag and they took it. So I had a feeling that they’d take this even tho it isn’t in a bag. I called and, sure enough, they’d take it. They have some sort of pantry where they give the cat/dog food to people who can’t afford it. I just need to make a note of whether it’s for a cat or dog.
Starting my day with a pic of Miles and ending it with a pic of Athena. Can this get any better?
Barbara – stay safe
Lisa – what wonderful news about Bella!!!

Barbara - that was a great repair job so fast and surprisingly inexpensive. We have all of the same issues as you. We need to have some drywall changed out and we need a new tub surround. I’m sure there is mould there.
I haven’t really stopped looking for work. I haven’t found anything equivalent worth applying for lately. One of the great things about my current one is excellent 100% employer paid benefits, RRSP matching and excellent vacation time. It’s hard to match that. Right now my boss is on a med leave. It’s been rather peaceful.
I give old cotton socks and mismatched pillowcases to the place where I take ceramics. The socks are used for a painting technique and the pillowcases are used to cover partially completed projects to keep the dust off them.
Machka - that is quite the list of things to get rid of. I realized going through it that I have been doing that fairly regularly since 2015.
In 2015 we had to reorganize and declutter Mom and Dad’s house. We had probably 50 tractor buckets full of junk that we got rid of. A lot could have been donated or sold probably but we only had 5 days to get it done. We had a massive bonfire.
In 2016 when we moved here I was ruthless getting rid of stuff and at least twice a year I go through drawers and closets to see what I can get rid of.
I’m sure my daughters would still say I have too much but what I have makes me happy.
You have piqued my curiosity as to why your Christmas present is a secret. I hope you are able to tell us soon.
Heather - thank you. I am so incredibly blessed to have the in-laws I have. I didn’t realize how blessed until I see how some of my friends and my eldest daughter is treated by theirs.
I try very hard to be a good MIL and although they don’t say it, I’m sure the guys appreciate me.
Pancakes and bacon or breakfast for supper is a favourite meal around here. It’s so much fun.
Kylia - My eldest daughter was told by her grade 2 teacher that she coloured worse than a kindergartener. A terrible insult at that age. We never knew this until after school was out or we would have said something. Anyway, in 2019 she started some therapy to try to settle her anxiety and depression and they suggested she colour. At first, she refused because she didn’t think she could. She finally tried and has coloured some beautiful intricate pages since.
You never know how some words affect people.
Allie - people here are struggling with power bills too.
It seems to me that Kyle is causing more of the problems. I’m only hearing one side of course, but I can’t imagine how he can’t be supportive of Carmine.
Lisa - It feels so nice when you spark something in those you love. When my Godson years ago showed an interest in drawing I bought him a sketch pad and pencils. When he decided to go to university, he went as an art major. I didn’t know that he had continued the interest all those years until he told me that he kept it up because I had encouraged him.
I’m so happy Bella has found her way back! Does this mean another visit with Kelsey before they leave?
Debbie - I have a plug in light in my bathroom so that I don’t have to have the fan on at the same time.
I don’t know how strong I am, I’ve been told that by quite a few people. My husband told me that a year or so ago and I didn’t know he thought that of me. Sometimes I wonder if I was just a coward and didn’t want to start over.
I was able to have a video chat with my Mom today! It’s the first time I’ve talked to her since May. I’ve had an awful struggle getting it arranged with the nursing home. I actually put a complaint in before Christmas and they listened. It was a good day for me to connect. I don’t know if she remembered or not, but today would have been Dad’s birthday and I needed a connection to someone. I don’t know why this is such a tough day every year. This is his 10th heavenly birthday.
I didn’t sleep at all last night. If I got 4 hours I would be shocked. I think I’ll go to bed early tonight.
I forgot to update the list last night
3 Let go of at least 5 items in your house.
I didn’t do this yesterday, but on the weekend I got rid of a box full of stuff and some socks for ceramics.
4 What was your favorite Christmas gift? (this year or ever)
The year I was 16 my Dad built me a hope chest. I had been begging for one since I was 12. A week before Christmas I was at my boyfriend’s house and called to talk to Dad. Mom told he he was at work. I jokingly said, “he doesn’t work on weekends, what’s he doing building my hope chest”? She said, “how did you know”? 😂 it was a well known fact in the family that you couldn’t let Mom know secrets.
This is my hope chest which I use as a coffee table and store a lot of family history and special mementos in. The bowl on top is one Dad made too.

Beth - I know, right? Most beautiful eyes ever, not that I'm biased or anything.
Speaking of which, Rebecca, holy guacamole, Athena just keeps getting more beautiful.
Julie - It's good to see your post, and genuinely, no one expects you to respond to everything, or even read everything! This should be a source of support, not another stressor, dear heart. That goes to everyone who's new, too...
Allie - I'm sorry that things are so rough between Carmine and Kyle, and I know how hard it is to just stand to the side. A loving and level-headed mama and an adoring grandma go a long way to helping Miles be OK.
Well, believe it or not, Bella the dog has been returned. One of the weirder human beings I've met in this life checked Facebook a few hours ago, and got in touch with our daughter. Sure enough, she's had Bella since New Year's Eve. She found her about a block from our house, looking confused and wandering around the local small grocery store parking lot, so she just took her home.
The woman, probably in her early 30s, was dressed in skater tie-dye, both the shirt and the bike shorts and the baseball cap. The guy with her was obviously stoned, totally nonverbal, just kind of wandered around the car. Which had dents in it on both the doors that looked like someone had taken a hammer to it a dozen times... and then someone wrote with a black marker, "God Saves" three or four times among the dents.
She was hinting for cash, which we don't keep at all here, and I said as much, which helped her decide to stop talking and leave.
So, Bella's here. Which shows that anything can happen.
Later y'all,
Love,

Lisa, I'm so happy that Bella has been returned! What a relief that must be for everyone.
Quick post, it's late and I have grandchild duty tomorrow (it's really not a duty!) and I want to get to the gym before I go get her, so I must get to bed now.
Hugs for those needing them, congrats to those celebrating and welcome to the newbies!

I got rid of most of this stuff in two purges (2004 and 2009) and on a regular basis. A lot of it IS rubbish which I get rid of regularly.
I do have:
24. Duplicate power cords (USB, etc.) and other technological bits and pieces ... because technology is my life and work
30. Jewelry you don’t wear ... because I use it as decoration
67. Old calendars ... these I'm still debating about.
120. Puzzles ... because I like puzzles!
And all the office stuff mentioned because I actually use office stuff.

1 Sit in silence for three minutes... it's harder than you think. Does silently working in the garden count? Done! I sat silently for 7 minutes and prayed.
2 List 5 things using each of your senses. Right now? I can see my Christmas decorations, I can hear Christmas songs, I can taste my coffee, I can smell my coffee, and I can feel a comfortable temperature in the room.
3 Let go of at least 5 items in your house. I'm not in a downsizing or reducing mode so I've taken some lunch things to work, I will take an item to be mailed and another to be given to the people at work.
4 What was your favorite Christmas gift? (this year or ever). I can't tell you what my favourite Christmas gift this year is yet. It's a secret.
5 Move for at least 30 minutes today. Absolutely. It's a very rare day that I don't.6 Share a goal you achieved last year
7 Slow down and savor one meal today
8 Who was your favorite teacher
9 Create something today
10 What is your favorite lyric from a song
11 Send a card/note to someone today
12 What are you looking forward to in 2023?
13 Tell a random person they look "good" today
14 Tell us three amazing things that happened recently (you decide what "recently" means...lol)
15 Call or text someone you haven't talked to in at least a week
16 What made you smile today
17 Take a photo of something you're grateful for
18 What material comforts are you most thankful for? You can make your list as long as you like...
19 Write a positive review for a company for goods or services you've received recently
20 Write down five things you like about yourself
21 Pay it forward in some way
22 What do you most desire in your life right now?
23 Go an entire day without complaining
24 What about you makes you special?
25 Spend time with a loved one
26 When was the last time you felt pure joy?
27 Hold the door for a stranger... or a friend
28 What fear have you overcome?
29 Engage in a random act of kindness of your own choice
30 When was the last time you laughed so hard you almost peed?
31 Now try to "meditate" (sit in silence) for ten minutes...
Day 3 back at work and for some reason I have quite the headache today. Don't know if it is because today is also Day 3 of gloom and cloud. Or if it is because I'm back at work staring at a computer screen all day. Or if my glasses need updating. Or what?!?
I am BUSY at work these day!
And busy the past couple evenings ... but not this evening, thank goodness.
One more day till the weekend.

My dog Teddy woke me up to go out at 3 am. Not sure whether to be glad he is well house trained, or annoyed that he woke me up. He had to woof for a good twenty minutes because I thought he was coughing from the anesthesia tube. And now he is quiet and I am wide awake. He is a good dog.

Good Morning!
Tracey Those are Beautiful!!!! Your Dad was so talented! As to the hard day because of missing him, (((HUGS))). Fourth of July is still hard for me as that is my BFF's death date. It has been 12 years. I never have been good about birthdays. I think about people on their birthday, but then somehow never get them texted or called until a day or two later. It is bad. I keep working on that. Glad you got to talk to Mom. I love Breakfast for dinner, fast and easy!
I too have been working on clearing stuff out for several years. My DH just keeps bringing in more stuffs. He doesn't like to get rid of anything unless it is totally useless which is one of the reasons I miss him going to Kentucky to go hunting on weekends! It is easier for me to get rid of stuff. I spoke with my friend yesterday and let her know that I have 3 boxes of clothes, coats, and boots to donate. I will drop them at her house on Saturday after work as DH will be hunting locally. Will see if I can get a few more things out of house soon.
Pip That is great news on the follow up.
Long day ahead, but getting the ugly out of the way early (doctor) and finishing it with fun.
Prayers!
Hugs!
Encouragement!

Tracey - What a wonderful hope chest and bowl. Interesting that you married someone who also works with wood.
Well, the move is underway! DDIL sent these photos just now. It must be such a relief after weeks of packing and sorting and dumping and moving boxes. I hope they will be happy in their new temporary home. At least they will be warm!
I more or less finished my new book MEMORY BOXES this morning. Just have to write an Afterword and close edit it. Phew! It's a poetry collection (nearly all the poems I've ever written!) with a bit of memoir thrown in.
Much love to all, and happy to hear that Bella is safe.

My replacement Christmas tree cards arrived today. Much better, deeper, colour, but the background is still grey. They are usable though. I'm still waiting to receive the robin ones from a different printer.

Just left the doctor. Blood pressure was a little high so I have to monitor that for 7 days, twice a day. She gave me a referral to neurology for my migraines and she prescribed magnesium to try to prevent migraines. Also more water. I have to watch what I eat and exercise more. LDL high, the rest of numbers look good.
.Oh, I also have to come back in a week to address the pain that I get when my heart rate gets over a 160 so that's where I'm at.
She also ordered cologuard for me. I told her I was not doing a colonoscopy.
Other than that I am healthy‐🤪

Good morning ladies!
Strength training survey[/b]: Does anyone in this group do strength training on a regular/semi-regular basis and if so, what does it consist of- machines? Free weights? Combo? at the gym or home?
Several years ago I was doing so well with the Strong Women Stay Young program here at home with dumbbells and ankle weights. Then my shoulder acted up. After that, hernia surgery. Haven't gotten back on the horse since.
Lisa - so glad Bella returned. Would be neat if she could talk and tell about her experience at the neighbor's house. Hope Kels can arrange a quick visit to get her that's not too strenuous. Also, seeing that photo of Corey with working on your stove with Egg supervising made my heart leap. Handsome AND handy! Sorry you had to buy a new stove, glad you expressed your opinion to Lowe's.
Barbara - good luck weathering the storm, hope you don't lose power. Sounds like you are very well prepared. Do you lose power often? We've lost power, days at a time, twice out here. Once when we lived near Seattle, then again on the farm during cold weather. Each time we did have a woodstove, good for heat and cooking and boiling water. We lost power in the morning a couple days ago, I had let the fire go out in the woodstove. Had it relit in a flash, of course once it got good and hot the power came back on. But we never know. In Pip's old neighborhood near Tacoma, vandals have damaged substations and areas were without power. It could happen here.
Debbie - good luck to you too in the storm department. Thank you for the updates on Destiny. How is she doing spirit wise? Hope the new femur will improve her quality of life and reduce pain. Sending prayers as well.
Jeannie in NM - good for you ditching the plastic laundry soap containers. I've been tempted to give those laundry sheets a try. I've tried various brands of pods and they all leave bits of residue/slime on some articles of clothing. Lately I've been clipping them with scissors over the washer, squeezing out the liquid detergent, then tossing the remains of the pod in the garbage. As far as I know, our state has banned plastic straws. I wish they'd go one step further and pressure manufacturers to curtail using plastics in other areas while they are at it. My opinion. Maybe they have, I don't keep up on the news.
Rosemarie - finding a group sounds ideal for you. My walking partner reminded me we all grieve differently, and that's OK. Thinking back, when my mother died, I powered through it no problem. About a year later, my sweet dog became ill, the vet couldn't figure out what was going on. I remember holding Bear in my lap and crying to beat the band. Probably grief from Mom's passing. Bear lasted a few more years, pretty healthy.
Rebecca - your taco salad sounds so yummy! Kudo's to you for finding your rhythm with IF and happy it's working well for you. Always love seeing that beautiful Athena.
Ladies - is it just me or are all of the grandkids of you gals here exceptional in some way?
Allie - thinking about Kyle's temper. I think most guys aren't good at dealing with worry and anxiety and tend to take it out on whoever is closest. I wonder if he's worried about paying the bills with the electricity rates going up, or some problem at work? My DH had a temper too sometimes and I figured I had done something wrong (never sure what!) and would tiptoe. I finally confronted him about it (I'm sure the neighbors enjoyed hearing us "discuss" it in the back yard!) It took a lot of work but I realized if I questioned him "how's it going with that crazy guy at work" or "are your feet hurting today?" and letting him speak about some of his troubles really took the pressure off. And he became somewhat human again, lol.
The landscapers came yesterday and WOW. What a big difference, they did a great job. Very hard workers, tutored me in Spanish a little. I told them I wanted to learn it and that's all it took. I'm now on their list for tamales next time they make a batch and I can hardly wait. DH had a Spanish phrase book I dug out after they left and I'm going to practice. Several store clerks are Hispanic and that's a good place for me to start.
OK better close. I've been working on this for a couple hours. Glad for the "draft" feature.
Make it a beautiful day!

1 Sit in silence for three minutes... it's harder than you think. Done
2 List 5 things using each of your senses. Currently: The sound of crickets from the boys sound machine in their bedroom, the smell of grass and fresh air from the open window, the blue/white glow of my laptop screen in the dark dining area, the taste of coffee, the scritchy feel of a tag on my shirt (that I will be changing out of soon)
3 Let go of at least 5 items in your house. I am not home right now, but my linen closet is going to take a BIG hit when I get home.
4 What was your favorite Christmas gift? (this year or ever). Not counting my youngest son being born on Christmas Eve; I would say a leatherbound copy of The Hobbit from my youngest son. It is not my favorite book, but it was the fact that he gave me a book. This is the first book I have received as a gift, since childhood. It is the thoughtfulness behind it.
5 Move for at least 30 minutes today- this will be easy as the boys and I will be taking a walk to the playground this morning. Extra movement will include: playground, putting sand in the sandbox and water in the water tables, building a fort in the living room, and setting up "camp" under it.6 Share a goal you achieved last year

Julie- good to see you back! Like the others have said, read/skim what you can, when you can and don't stress. Hope all is well with you!
Tracey- That hope chest and bowl are beautiful! And the work your dad put into the rocker! Awww! Great memory!
Rori- Hooray on the Nuggets choosing YOU! Nice to have the team you root for, want you! A big UGH on the unexpected company! I wonder if soul drainers realize that they are draining. ?
Lisa - Handy hubby! But BOO on having to replace it. The range; not the hubby!
Heather- Moving day for the fam! Are they a bit closer to you? Or do you have to travel further to help them, now? I am reading your book when I have a moment to myself while on vacay. lol It is a slow going due to lack of time to myself. But your writing so far is engaging and soul baring (as usual). It takes a strong person to survive the things that you have; but I think it takes a stronger person to hold the past to the light and use it to heal yourself.
Restore: While on this trip, I have been working on restoring my energy, restoring my attitude towards food. It has been an AF week and my first stop upon arrival was to the grocery store to buy some veggies that I enjoy. My DD, who used to be a great veggie eater pre pregnancies, does not buy hardly ANY veg now! I am kind of excited to weigh myself when I get home. We have only eaten two meals out; the rest have been home made (mostly by me). So I have really been able to control what is going into my mouth and I don't feel bloated/swollen from salt and processed foods (or alcohol). Been drinking more water this week and also getting a bit more exercise.
