Kim - getting a little worried about you... are you or your family getting impacted by the Northern California flood?0
-
KJ - the family are about the same walking distance from us as before - 30 mins. They don't have a parking permit as yet, but it should arrive this week. We usually walk to them or my son picks us up. At the moment, they only have one key, so Bea is coming to us after school for a while. Edie is jealous! Can't wait to see their place.
Thank you for reading and liking my book.

Hi Gals,
Lisa - I am so happy to hear Bella is back, I hope you and Corey have figured out a place for her that she feels safe, even if it is not inside the house.
Winter rain storm- it is a lot of rain, and last night quite a bit of wind, but the problems I have are minor, same with my Mom’s home, some branches around the yard, a trash can blew over and made a mess… Some of my friends in more rural areas have lost cable and/or power. California has made a big push to go all electric in part of the state’s climate goals, but our largest electricity provider hasn’t kept the infrastructure up to accommodate storms/wild fire/ and the addition of roof top solar. So folks who have embraced the all electric are either doing diesel generators (the opposite of the goals LOL)/battery walls/or having no heat/cooking/hot water… I have gas cooking, the fireplace, and 2 BBQs that take briquets and one that takes gas, so I am a bit more prepared. But living in earthquake country I was always part of family preparation as a kid and have kept it up as an adult.
Tracey – what a beautiful hope chest!
I glanced at the 200 things to toss and was amazed at how many of those things I have and use either daily or weekly.
This time of year for me is one of quiet and re-grouping as I am not working 12 hour days and all 7 days of the week, January is recovery time for me as October – December are so busy for embroidery. This year I put a large number of clients off until January so it is busier than I am used to.
One comment on the boots/stilettoes you gals had me laughing so hard as until my mom was in her late 70’s she wore stilettoes with 4 – 5 inch heels to many things, and 3 inch high heels to everything else. She did wear flats around the house, gardening, house cleaning etc. The doctor finally told her she had to be in flats, they were just safer. She had a wonderful collection of black patent leather, some with a ankle strap, some with peak-a-boo toes. So for her definition, it is boots – just boots……

Had a computer goof, so I may be repeating myself. 😳
Allie— DH & I are in the same building on different floors. He has health issues and works with highly skilled RNs. They are helping him get stronger. 😊
DH is here after a time in the hospital. He is doing better. He had breakfast today with his friends. I am delighted with his improved health. 💖
I have an apartment on a different level in the same building. Residents here are healthy, have apartments, and come and go as they wish. I am able to see DH as I want, and I can go places to shop, & have an occasional lunch with our daughter. 😊 💕6 -
Kim we are glad you are doing well through the storms.
Katla that sounds like an excellent arrangement for you and DH.
I just suggested my dad eat peanut butter on his white toast instead of honey because he is prediabetic. He made a lame joke and ignored me. I guess every stage of caregiving has its trials.
Next I am trying to arrange a haircut for Mom. She thinks she can do it herself. Toddlers listen better than seniors!

Lisa--Glad that Bella has been returned. Sounds like she has had an interesting couple days.
Katla--Glad to hear DH is back in his room and you can visit. Prayers he keeps doing well and can me in the same apartment as you.
Tracey--Beautiful Hope Chest and bowl. Your dad did very nice work. I have my mom's Hope Chest she got in High School, so over 70 years old and can still smell the cedar when it's open. I keep family papers and things inside. I even have her report card from High School.
Pip-- Great news on your checkup.
Kylia--Hope you enjoy your night out.
I have made it to the gym 3 days this week and today my knee are hurting. I do the NewStep. I won't go tonight as I am working longer hours, due to someone wanting the day off, and we are to meet our niece and her 2 daughters for supper at Olive Garden. Going to catch up on each other as been several months since we have spent time together.
I have not given in to getting on FB or playing games on my phone.
I want to go to the hospital gift shop today because we have a Christmas party Monday evening and we are to bring a gift for the gift exchange. Our gift shop is having something different each day on sale from Christmas so will check it out.

3 Let go of at least 5 items in your house. I posted 7 items on the Buy Nothing site - new slippers, a trivet, sippy cups, gift cup with scrubby thing, old Aqua Velva, my old Seal-A-Meal, and a Celestial Seasonings tin can.
4 What was your favorite Christmas gift? (this year or ever). My entire family donated a Heifer International gift in my name - so satisfying.
5 Move for at least 30 minutes today. Already done. Took the pups for their first walk at 4:00 a.m.; it was cool, dark, misty, and quiet. Lovely.4 -

Strength training survey[/b]: Does anyone in this group do strength training on a regular/semi-regular basis and if so, what does it consist of- machines? Free weights? Combo? at the gym or home?
Several years ago I was doing so well with the Strong Women Stay Young program here at home with dumbbells and ankle weights. Then my shoulder acted up. After that, hernia surgery. Haven't gotten back on the horse since.

I workout at home using Beachbody.com. I’ve been doing this for 30+ years. I hate the gym. I pay a comparatively small subscription fee and it pays itself off repeatedly. We both use it in my house. We use dumbbells from 3 pounds up to 52.5 (for him) and we have most of that in adjustable weight. We also use resistance bands sometimes and an over the door band for back and some chest and arm exercises. We have mats and a large and small ball.
Strength training doesn’t require all this. We just do this.
I workout most days, but use the weights 4ish times per week. The other days involve hiking, running, walking, kayaking, etc.
You’d think I’d be in great shape. I don’t feel it.
Rain in CA-it’s not so bad here in Southern Cal. It’s worse up where Debbie and Kim live. Here, the concern is about the landslides from the fires. Not sure how it is where Pip is. I haven’t heard much about conditions that far inland, but I suspect there are worries about landslides.
It’s rainy here again today, but slow and steady and relatively light. Great excuse to stay home.

Well back from watching Miles, and had enough energy took stuff down to the storage unit and started putting Miles push car together.. but was getting a bit tired and couldn't find one of the pieces so ,I came in to take a little rest....after the last couple days.. i deserve it.6 -
Lisa so glad to hear Bella is back home.
So far there is no sign of the snow that has been forecast. In fact it's been quite mild today. Keeping fingers crossed that it passes us by.
I've started exercising again, using small weights - I have no upper body strength. I've lost a few pounds with being ill over Christmas, so thought it would be a good time to get back to it. I'm building up slowly as I still feel exhausted by the afternoon. I'm mindful of what I am eating too, but not counting the calories yet.
Katla glad your husband is home with you.
Prayers for Destiny, it certainly puts things into perspective as Michele said.
Think I'll get myself off to bed, so much more I wanted to say, but my mind has gone blank.
Love to all

I take almost all of my showers in the dark because of it- a lot more relaxing without the bright light and the loud noise.
Really? My husband seems sensitive to fan noise too. I like fan noise because it helps drown out my tinnitus so I'll leave the bathroom fan on and turn other fans on around the house and at work. But he goes around turning them off because he says they're noisy.dlfk202000 wrote: »I have tip-toed around dh for the past 30 yrs(and former hubby for 7 while we were married). What would happen if you didn't tip toe around your husband and if you just said whatever was on your mind?Gray and miserable weather here today. Ran some errands. Paid some bills ... with checks Machka... otherwise told to use a credit card??? We're having leftovers for dinner which no one is too excited about. I'll be in bed early.

I have a small fan I put in the window during the summer and can fall asleep to that noise but the bathroom one is very annoying to me- not calming at all. It is supposed to be a quieter version to what we used to have. It is better but still terrible.
What will happen if I stop tip toeing around- not sure but need to start finding out. Hard to change a behaviour after so many years. I don't like confrontation so I usually just stay quiet. Afraid of the outcome

Lisa - so glad Bella returned. Would be neat if she could talk and tell about her experience at the neighbor's house. Hope Kels can arrange a quick visit to get her that's not too strenuous. Also, seeing that photo of Corey with working on your stove with Egg supervising made my heart leap. Handsome AND handy! Sorry you had to buy a new stove, glad you expressed your opinion to Lowe's.
Barbara - good luck weathering the storm, hope you don't lose power. Sounds like you are very well prepared. Do you lose power often? We've lost power, days at a time, twice out here. Once when we lived near Seattle, then again on the farm during cold weather. Each time we did have a woodstove, good for heat and cooking and boiling water. We lost power in the morning a couple days ago, I had let the fire go out in the woodstove. Had it relit in a flash, of course once it got good and hot the power came back on. But we never know. In Pip's old neighborhood near Tacoma, vandals have damaged substations and areas were without power. It could happen here.
Debbie - good luck to you too in the storm department. Thank you for the updates on Destiny. How is she doing spirit wise? Hope the new femur will improve her quality of life and reduce pain. Sending prayers as well.
Jeannie in NM - good for you ditching the plastic laundry soap containers. I've been tempted to give those laundry sheets a try. I've tried various brands of pods and they all leave bits of residue/slime on some articles of clothing. Lately I've been clipping them with scissors over the washer, squeezing out the liquid detergent, then tossing the remains of the pod in the garbage. As far as I know, our state has banned plastic straws. I wish they'd go one step further and pressure manufacturers to curtail using plastics in other areas while they are at it. My opinion. Maybe they have, I don't keep up on the news.
Rosemarie - finding a group sounds ideal for you. My walking partner reminded me we all grieve differently, and that's OK. Thinking back, when my mother died, I powered through it no problem. About a year later, my sweet dog became ill, the vet couldn't figure out what was going on. I remember holding Bear in my lap and crying to beat the band. Probably grief from Mom's passing. Bear lasted a few more years, pretty healthy.
Rebecca - your taco salad sounds so yummy! Kudo's to you for finding your rhythm with IF and happy it's working well for you. Always love seeing that beautiful Athena.
Ladies - is it just me or are all of the grandkids of you gals here exceptional in some way?
Allie - thinking about Kyle's temper. I think most guys aren't good at dealing with worry and anxiety and tend to take it out on whoever is closest. I wonder if he's worried about paying the bills with the electricity rates going up, or some problem at work? My DH had a temper too sometimes and I figured I had done something wrong (never sure what!) and would tiptoe. I finally confronted him about it (I'm sure the neighbors enjoyed hearing us "discuss" it in the back yard!) It took a lot of work but I realized if I questioned him "how's it going with that crazy guy at work" or "are your feet hurting today?" and letting him speak about some of his troubles really took the pressure off. And he became somewhat human again, lol.
The landscapers came yesterday and WOW. What a big difference, they did a great job. Very hard workers, tutored me in Spanish a little. I told them I wanted to learn it and that's all it took. I'm now on their list for tamales next time they make a batch and I can hardly wait. DH had a Spanish phrase book I dug out after they left and I'm going to practice. Several store clerks are Hispanic and that's a good place for me to start.
OK better close. I've been working on this for a couple hours. Glad for the "draft" feature.
Make it a beautiful day!

Also gardening with a lot of lifting and carrying and trekking up and down stairs and hills.
Also climbing stairs.

DH is doing better since he was discharged from the hospital. We were not impressed with that hospital and hope never to go there again.
We are planning to sell our home in Oregon. I will miss it, but there are some good reasons to sell.
Our house there has two master bedrooms, and two master bathrooms, both upstairs, and potty and sink down stairs. DH can’t safely go up or down the stairs. We plan on a one story home.
I will miss the view and our good neighbors there. Here we will be close to family. We anticipate having a one story home here, and that will be good for DH. I plan to bring our furniture here when we can move in. We don’t know when that will be.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that things will go well.

Lanette- Destiny's spirits remain high most of the time(from what her mom posts).
In May, it will be two years she has been battling this terrible disease.
This is her right after her original diagnosis. He has had a few months in remission but those times don't last long enough.
We are just praying that the new treatment gets rid of it for good.

You could call my dumbbell routine "lite" strength training. I use four pound dumbbells and two pound ankle weights. I lift them in various directions, currently twenty reps, which isn't much at that weight. I was doing forty reps last year ...(sigh).
I was breathing a little fast just climbing the stairs today, so I really ought to do more of that. Just got done horseback riding, and that went well.

Spent the last few hours installing my self-inflicted Christmas present, a bidet seat with a night light, a heated seat, warm water on demand and a blow dryer. Ironically, it has been a complete pain in the posterior to install.
I am nearly finished. Only one connection is still oozing a tiny drop or two, but when you're hooked up to electricity, leaks are not an option. This is replacing my exercise time for today, it's pushing me past exhaustion. Just need to go find a crescent wrench in the outside shop. The one in my purple-handled "women's toolbox" set is too small to go around the nut. Guess men just have bigger nuts. Pun completely intended.
Love y'all,

Big day for the new members of the family. On December 24th I let them sleep outside of the crate but I left the crate up just in case I saw any accidents during the night. They’ve been good so I had kirby put it away. NO MORE CRATE FOR THEM!!
14 -
Did Katina Hunter’s Interval Party DVD then took Jerry home and went to WalMart for a few things, bought gas, then volunteered at the Green Room then stopped at the Humane Society’s thrift store to donate some cat food that we’d had. Making avocado brownies for Vince right now only I “accidentally” won’t mention the avocado.
Tracey – what sort of painting technique are those socks used for at ceramics? Your father was so talented! Love the hope chest and bowl
kylia – we had so many cat toys, it wasn’t even funny. When Vince left to help Jess move to Iowa, somehow the cat “got sick” on the toy and, boo hoo, it had to be thrown out….lol Lately, I seem to be being more of the minimalist whereas Vince keeps everything “just in case”. Some things I really have to talk him into letting me throw it out. Like we had a bag of charcoal briquets, we hadn’t used them in the 12 years we lived here and I don’t see when we’d use them. Vince didn’t want to throw them out. I finally told him that if we needed them, we’d just buy more. Really, we’ll never need them.
Lanette – usually I do a strength training DVD on Tuesdays. It’s with a barbell, and to be honest, I’m too cheap to buy a complete set. It would probably be at least $1,000 if not more. Plus, it takes up too much room. Anyway, I don’t like to use the machines. To me, they’re good for rehab. But I think they isolate the muscle too much. Like when you’re doing biceps, you’re sitting. If you’re standing, you’re also using your abs some. But I do think that the one machine that’s worth it is the pull up one. I have free weights at home and do them also. Just not at the gym
Lisa – I’m so glad Cory had a supervisor to be sure he did things right!
Pip – good news at the doctor’s
Soup kitchen tomorrow. It’s funny, I have my gym bag(s) (yes, plural, one for strength training and another one for cardio) and then my craft bag that I take to the Green Room then my bag with my shirt for the soup kitchen and anything else that I may need there.
Vicki – what is the New Step?
Katla – sounds like you have a good plan
Debbie – I have no doubt that Destiny’s spirits are high. She’s such a trooper
pip – yea for no more crate!!! I bet the babies are thrilled
Gonna get ready for bed and then maybe watch some TV

Another storm is starting to hit us now. Huge one hit last night. No damage for us but a friend from high school posted these pictures of her house and barn. Said if she had been sleeping or doing her crafts in the barn at the time, she wouldn't be typing today. She lives north of us, in Mendocino County, north of Booneville.
Mom will be fine during all these storms. She may get stranded at home but she is well prepared. Doesn't mind just hanging out at home. This happens most winters. Some are just worse than others. Usually there are three ways for her to get into town- Windsor to the south, Geyserville to the north or straight into town. Some times there are options, other times, just sit and wait for the water to go down.
She has a creek in the back of her property but far from the house. Just hope it doesn't go over the well. If it does, she knows how to treat it when the water goes back down. Been out on that property for almost 50 yrs now.
They are saying another two weeks of rain. Hopefully we get some breaks in between.
We really do need the rain and at least for now, I don't have to go out in it much(we did go out and do a little shopping, our usual on Thursday beings I am off and he gets paid and has to pick up his check)
Got one pair of rainboots out and will pull my other ones out this evening.(one pair is not as waterproof as they should be but they are fleece lined)
May be getting two more cats temporarily- son's girlfriend and her family have to move out of their old place today and the new one that her brother is buying isn't ready yet. Not sure how it will go having two more(possible three but the third may be an outside cat(didn't know she had a third, we already took two of her's last time she moved. One is inside, for now but her brother is outside because he wouldn't stop peeing on everything, especially my side of the bed). Son said he will keep her two cats in his room. We will see how that works out.
Went to Walmart- haven't been there in months. DH needed something there. Hit the Christmas clearance. Love that they add all the snowflakes/winter stuff to it- 75% off. Got some cute craft supplies to keep my daycare girl busy. Winter is far from over so I have time to use them up before we switch to spring. Got some at 99cent store too.

Katla - you will miss watching the river and its critters but this sounds like a good option.
Lanette - I do some strength and balance training suggested by my PT. I use 3 pound hand weights and a 10 pound kettle bell. Also some are just body weight.
Lisa - glad Bella made it home.
Michelle - NuStep is a recumbent stepper. It is used a lot in rehab in the midwest. I have not seen a single one out here in the PNW but used one in Sioux Falls to rehab both knees. It is also used there for pulmonary and cardiac rehab.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA3 -
