Hi everyone and Happy New Year!
I’m new and wanted to introduce myself. I am starting this journey to a better me. I have started to use MFP again and I started at the gym today. It’s going to be a long journey but I’m not in a rush. If I can just do one day at a time, I’ll reach my goal at some point. I can definitely use all the encouragement you can throw my way and I’m happy to send some back your way as well.
It’s time for a fresh start, new habits, and a commitment to change. We can do this journey one step at a time!

Happy new year to all-
I had an interesting New Year’s Eve and day. My sister called to invite us over to her home for drinks and just hang out for New Year’s Eve. Kirby wasn’t keen on going cuz of being out on the road and the dogs. Kirby was okay with me going but wanted me to spend the night and not drive back. This way we could talk about the family drama, get drunk and not drive home. My sister was kinda emotional because of what she recently learned about me and mom. A few days ago she called me wanting to ask me about something. She said one of our nieces told her son that when her mom (my oldest brothers wife) was pregnant with her that she saw my mom dunking my head in a barrel, tub or bin of corn. I was surprised. I told her that I wouldn’t have put it passed our mother but I didn’t remember that. I could have blocked it out of my memory because it was too painful but I didn’t know. I remembered other stuff like her hitting me with the back end of a shovel and hitting me when no one was around but I didn’t remember that. That really shook my sister up, she couldn’t believe how she could do that to her child. I may have been a teenager by then, not sure.
Well, the next morning we went to moms to have breakfast. Our oldest brother had not seen , called or talked to our mom for 5 years. Well he finally went there and our brother and sister went over there to confront him as to why hadn’t he been around, he lives probably 1/2 mile from her. I wish I could have been there for that but I wasn’t. Well New Year’s Day they were going to confront mom about that visit and we all jumped on her. I ended up leaving after breakfast and my sister confronted her about the incident with me that I didn’t remember, well of course mom copped out and conveniently didn’t remember doing that.
Well that was my New Years…….16 -
Debbie-Prayers for Destiny. She is such a beautiful child.
Kim-good work with chickens-and mom's grudging approval of boots! We take what we can get!
Kylia-you are telling truth about the darkness! Sunset is slowly occurring later. I did notice a difference in Arizona from here. I pay attention to when it is "dark" more than just sunset for my walks (I guess I am referring to dusk but I'm sure twilight is in there somewhere)-anyway-I can usually have some helpful light for around 20-30 minutes after the sunset time. In Arizona-it gets dark much quicker.
Beth-so glad you had a good day. I have found that while grief may be ever present, it does not have to dominate or be the only thing we can feel.
Jane-Welcome to the group. There are a couple of us here from southwestern Ohio.
Pip-So sorry you had that sort of New Years. All I know is that most every family has some dysfunctional issues. We can't go back and change the past. I don't know why some parents do what they do to kids-but I believe mental illness is at the root of it. All we can do its try not to engage similar behaviors as we get older and not pass it on.
1 Sit in silence for three minutes... it's harder than you think-Actually not too hateful for me.
2 List 5 things using each of your senses-smell of the wet ground on my walk, tartness of sugar free applesauce, sound of weather siren being tested, seeing the leafless tress against the gloomy sky, feeling the crispness in the air on my face.
I think my word (or phrase) for 2023 is "Let it go." As I move on to my next chapter, I need to let go of parts of current identity, possessions and routines. Of course, I will be developing new ones-but I need to let go of much.
I do enjoy reading how others handle goals, lists, etc. I learn something from each approach. It does point out the importance of us doing what is right for us-but doing it.
Health whine:So I am still waiting on one of the new prescriptions for my eye infections. My location didn't get their delivery in today. The other location in town has one bottle of the medicine. I called them to get it transferred to them. It currently is listed as "on hold" (meaning pharmacist is checking it), Don't now if I should run out before they close to see if I can get it or not. It was extremely painful throughout the night last night-never knew an eye infection could cause such pain. I swear it hit a 9 at times. It is not as painful now, so perhaps oral antibiotics are doing something, I have gone ahead and used the other drops waiting for new script. I do believe it is easier if we can just avoid all things medical!
Back to work tomorrow. Haven't been there since December 20. Handled a couple of phone calls and emails that week, then nothing. Yep-retirement will be nice! I do have to stop at dentist on way in and get broken crown looked at. Hoping they can just recement it, but it is what it is. Wednesday I go to Columbus so see Endo who is monitoring bones/calcium. May take a bit of time and drive past a couple of retirement places I am looking at that are nearby-see what kind of vibe I get from neighborhood and outside.
Must get kitchen cleaned up and lunch packed. Then back to relaxing.
Take care all,
Gina in Ohio

Welcome Jane, You have come to the right place. I read this thread in the morning while I eat my breakfast and it sets me on a healthy course for my day. I have learned so much from these women. I hope you will keep coming back.

I guess I'm one of those rare people who is not negatively affected by the darkness. I didn't like it so much when I had to drive to and from work in the dark, but now I enjoy walking while it's dark. I do stuff in the house during the day and hardly notice whether it's light or dark.
Something that is misunderstood about minimalism is that it is not just about decluttering and getting rid of things. An important component is "intentional living". That means being intentional about buying things so you don't accumulate still more "stuff" that you'll want to get rid of later and being intentional about what you choose to do and doing only what is important and essential.
A good suggestion about all the books about decluttering is get them on audio and listen to them while cleaning, decluttering, or exercising so they don't require extra time that could be spend getting something accomplished.

Just work today, but none tomorrow so I will go to the gym to do a body pump DVD
Kim – that’s the reason I volunteer at the soup kitchen. I’m very grateful that I can afford to buy/eat lunch. There are too many people who can’t afford lunch. How nice of you to help those neighbors!
Kpolencheck – welcome!
Rebecca – gonna look at HL for that picture. I think it’s so cute. I don’t see it on their website, unfortunately. Then again, I didn’t look real hard. Gotta get to bowling in a few.
Terri – a picture of smiling Miles, isn’t that a great way to start the day???
Annefreewin – welcome. I like that “breaking free”. So very appropriate
Lanette – Vince took 5 years of French. He got to the point where he’d dream in French. I took lessons in Polish a while ago and the problem I had was that there wasn’t anyone to talk to in Polish. My father had passed away.
Debbie – prayers for Destiny. So young to be going thru so much. Like you said, the good thing is that they’ll remove the tumor.
Rebecca – your meals sound so delish. If you were to have breakfast, what foods would you have?
Jane – welcome!
Allie – I always liked Touched by an Angel
pip – HUG

Machka - I would keep my decorations up much longer into January, but DH doesn’t like it. He tolerates my Christmas decoration obsession. I say that, but funnily enough a couple years ago I didn’t do as much and he made comments about it asking if I was Ok several times.
Barbara - I struggled coming up with a list for 2022’s accomplishments too. I did have more highlights than I remembered.
Viv - your note about dishes reminded me of my Mom. She was very particular about 3 household chores, dishes, laundry and scrubbing. She never left a dirty dish in the sink. Did laundry everyday and had the whitest whites! She also scrubbed the floor at least once a day. Her cupboards were open shelves because Dad started building new ones for her around 77-78 and finished them in 2012. There was always dust collected in the top shelves but the lower ones were spotless. There were no closets in our house, I don’t know how she did it.
Heather - I enjoyed that article. It’s sort of funny, I genuinely enjoy hosting Christmas, Thanksgiving and such. My daughter has done it the last two years and I’ve missed it. I think I enjoy it so much because my Mom never did it. It was always at our grandmothers. I also don’t worry about the “perfect” holiday so I think that helps.
Kylia - I hope you have a busy day at work but still get your lunch break.
Lanette - my Mom was never that type of Mom. I really felt more often than not that I had to be the adult in the relationship. My Grandmother’s voice is stuck in my head more than my Mom’s.
I remember when I first started reading along in this group I kept coming back to see how Machka’s husband was and what happened to him. That was April 2018, I went back and read Jan to Mar to get to know everyone.
Katie - I took note of the organizers you recommend. I am going to tell my daughter about it. I live in a very tiny home and am always finding clever ways of organizing.
Barbie - I agree about stopping when you don’t enjoy it anymore. I’ve done that with a few things.
Rebecca - I would be calling the elder abuse department now. It is so common for adult children to take advantage of their parents. It is tragic really.
Rita - I understand the name thing. I have most of you down but newcomers takes me a bit to remember.
Vicki - I’m happy to read you had a quiet week at work.
Pip - Lucy has really come a long way. Soon she’ll be caught up to you, Kirby and Yogi.
Sorry for all of the drama on your Nee Years.
Ginny - I agree. Mental illness needs o much more research and therapies available. I think almost everyone has some form or other.
Michele - Etsy would have the word search sign for the bathroom as well.
I am utterly exhausted. I cannot believe I have to go back to work tomorrow. I am hoping to go with a better, more positive attitude this year.
The last couple have been rough.
1 Sit in silence for three minutes - I didn’t get this done on the first but I did it this evening with number 2 while I was in the tub. I was so relaxed the timer scared me.
2 List 5 things using each of your senses -
Feel - warm water around me in the tub
Smell - the smell of the shampoo and conditioner and soap
Taste - I am on a mission to drink more water so ice cold water.
See - the beautiful snow covered trees
Hear - Michaela’s laugh
3 Let go of at least 5 items in your house
4 What was your favorite Christmas gift? (this year or ever)
5 Move for at least 30 minutes today
6 Share a goal you achieved last year
7 Slow down and savor one meal today
8 Who was your favorite teacher
9 Create something today
10 What is your favorite lyric from a song
11 Send a card/note to someone today
12 What are you looking forward to in 2023?
13 Tell a random person they look "good" today
14 Tell us three amazing things that happened recently (you decide what "recently" means...lol)
15 Call or text someone you haven't talked to in at least a week
16 What made you smile today
17 Take a photo of something you're grateful for
18 What material comforts are you most thankful for? You can make your list as long as you like...
19 Write a positive review for a company for goods or services you've received recently
20 Write down five things you like about yourself
21 Pay it forward in some way
22 What do you most desire in your life right now?
23 Go an entire day without complaining
24 What about you makes you special?
25 Spend time with a loved one
26 When was the last time you felt pure joy?
27 Hold the door for a stranger... or a friend
28 What fear have you overcome?
29 Engage in a random act of kindness of your own choice
30 When was the last time you laughed so hard you almost peed?
31 Now try to "meditate" (sit in silence) for ten minutes...
Off to write in a Gratitude Journal and Log my food.

Wow! Chatty day! Just caught up with reading. I too have learned so much from all of you ladies! You help bring out the better in me. Thank you all!
Pip Families....I just shake my head anymore. I believe that most families have at least one dysfunctional character in it!
Prayers for all those struggling with health issues.
I feel like today was a good day. I set myself up for success at work with the hours I put in yesterday. Really made headway on catching up! Came home, made quick dinner, then headed out to grocery stores. DH even came with me! I actually appreciated that tonight. Sometimes I need the alone time, but tonight wasn't one of them. I really dislike going to the store, but if I want us to eat at home more and me to have good food, then they are a necessary evil. I do better if I can run errands before getting home from work, but sometimes that doesn't work (like when you are hungry). Got home, put stuffs away, thought about just sitting down and leaving lunch prep until tomorrow, but I didn't. Lunch is ready to put in lunchbox in the morning. Proud that I didn't procratinate
I am exhausted and heading to bed.
Welcome to the new ladies!

When the time of year comes where it is dark on the way to work and dark on the way home, I often feel like crying. I feel so down.
I can't see my garden and exercising outside is next to impossible.
I often try to take some time off around then so I can be out during the daylight. That makes it a bit easier.

Shelley, By posting, you are a member of our active, welcoming group. Jump right in!

Machka, I have read that the tears shed due to emotion are chemically different from the tears shed due to eye irritation. Because of that, some people believe that crying when sad or happy is physiologically therapeutic. Another of the amazing mysteries of our bodies.

I believe Aurora Rose will make her debut today. This is grand baby #6 for us, my spouse's son's (Emerson's) second daughter. Older sister LillyBell is 3. Mom Michelle has hypertension of pregnancy, so she is being induced at a nearby hospital. The report this morning is that the pitocin has been started and labor has begun.
I often have very little excitement until the last minute, and true to form, I am just now beginning to feel the butterflies and anticipatory glee. This should be a wonderful day. Lillybell is going to daycare this morning, and will be picked up by a friend who has come to stay the week.
We are on standby and will be keeping Emerson's dad and stepmother in NH in the loop. They will be coming later this month to stay with Emerson, Michelle, LillyBell, and Rori for a week.
Being a grandparent is (no words).
