Betsy I drink 1/4 to 1/2 cup pickle juice it seems to work immediately for my husband and me. My husband will drink pickle juice in advance. If he is doing a lot of physical work that generally brings on cramping in his legs at night time. When did you start drinking the bone broth? Have you noticed the same results that I have? I was thinking last night of ways to make soups and different dishes out of it. I do notice that my beef bone broth is a little more thick. I think it has a lot more collagen than my chicken broth. Have you ever used chicken feet in your chicken broth? I don’t even know where I would begin to look for those little things!! I was thinking I could use it in a stir fry. I will definitely have a lot of fun in Florida! I will send everybody a little bit of sunshine! Thanks for the encouragement!
Terri I love your painting! You are very talented! Is that Hood River? Or a river that is close to you? I have a friend that lives in Hood river.

Shout out thanks to Tracey for the mug decorating idea! I've just purchased 4 mugs and a set of ceramic paints to give as a joint present to the kids for Easter. They can leave them here and paint them when they come for their sleepover the following weekend. Hooray! Better than even more chocolate!

I also think keeping skin moisturized helps.
Take care all,
Ginny in Ohio
I never thought using lotion or whatever helped ... possibly partly because I can't stand it on my skin, so I wash it off about 10 or 15 minutes after putting it on.
But I started using a tiny dab of Vitamin E cream on the backs of my hands when Rhody was younger because his little claws were sharp and would catch my hands. And I would try to leave it on for a while.
Then the doctor who removed the skin cancer from my nose commented that the skin on my hands was so soft and asked if I used something. A. I keep hydrated. B. I was using a bit of Vit E cream. So the combination appeared to be working.

Beth near Buffalo
Beth - This has stayed with me since I read it eight pages ago. It stuck because you tried to diminish your stress by taking a page out of my playbook, having your goal as "Be lighter," for March. And you WERE lighter. But you feel you failed because what you "really wanted to do was lose the extra 7 pounds." And that, my dear is exactly why I yanked myself off of that hamster wheel of losing specific amounts. You achieved your goal, and you were lighter at the end than the beginning! But somehow, you've found a way to beat yourself up for not losing enough anyway.
Stop that.
OK, back down off my soapbox. I've just been thinking about that for days. Hope you take it as it's meant, out of love for you and a hope for less stress and more serenity.
Love,
Lisa in AR
Also, losing 7 lbs in a month would be quite the feat! It can be done, but it requires a strict diet and quite a bit of exercise.
They recommend 1 lb a week so that's 4 lbs in March. I'm thrilled if I lose 0.5 lbs/week these days.
There's something to be said for keeping goals realistic.

Welcome newbies and returnees! (((hugs))) to those who need them.
OKAY, well that was ONE of the things! HAPPY BIRTHDAY LISA! (Now it's late! Sorry!)
Rebecca, I'm so glad you finally wrote that letter. I hope it brings you some peace.
Katla, you sound so much happier these days. I think just having some of your things back with you has brought you some joy again. I love your reference to a ST transporter. I'd love one too. There are so many places I'd love to just visit quickly and come home in an instant.
OMGosh Tracey, you just had me rolling over in laughter! To not be a dog fan and have a stubborn one at that! We ADORE dogs and had two beagles. Now THOSE are two-year-olds for basically their entire lives. Anyone who can train a beagle is considered a dog whisperer. We loved our beagles and the only reason we went for the Chug this time was because we didn't want to deal with the two-year-old or the HAIR!!! We're just to old to go through that again.
Can't wait to see what Bea dreams up today, Heather! Love the board game. She's so creative!
Beautiful painting, Terri!
4. Eat healthy and natural food today and drinks lots of water... I'll try, but Freddy is taking me out to lunch!

Annie, Have you looked into tracking apps like Life360? My sisters' families all use it, as do my parents who are both included in their "groups." I'm also in their groups so they can "keep an eye" on me when we travel to faraway places. They all use it mainly to watch where their kids go, but they also keep an eye on our parents (neither of whom need looking after quite yet, but it's nice to know where they are). It even tracks when and where they are driving and how fast. It might be something to put on your dad's phone. He will just need to keep the phone charged.

My thoughts on the pickle juice and bone broth drinks: Be careful of the salt content. These can be quite high, especially when using pre-processed (not homemade) or adding bullion for added flavor. My DH and I both have high blood pressure so watch our salt. Just my opinion.
I am trying to sell a computer on the local Facebook Marketplace and think a scammer was trying to get to me. She/he was asking for my phone number to get directions. I gave them one, (I have an iPhone) and they tried to send me some code from Google voice. Google reported it as being a scam so I informed the ‘potential’ buyer and they asked me if I had another phone. I then replied that I would only use the Marketplace app for communication. I also told them I would report them as scammers otherwise. They replied “no scammer” which told me they could not speak English. I blocked the name. I was careful about the bad English because this area is about 50/50 Spanish speaking. Some with very poor English. But I listened to my gut. I am glad I have an iPhone and they couldn’t hijack it.
A couple weeks ago I got a message from my bank stating that someone tried to get $1,000 from my checking account through Zelle. I do not use this app any more. I did once but stopped. I made sure I had no connections to that app any longer and reported to bank. SHEESH!
Be careful out there! Scammers everywhere!!

Good morning ladies!
I really appreciate all the feedback on eating times. Now that I'm not cooking for 2 anymore, keeping on an eating schedule has been a challenge. Your ideas and suggestions are very helpful.
I've steadily gained weight since DH passed away and am trying to figure out the best way forward. When he was still alive, it was three meals a day. I had a good breakfast and fixed lunch and dinner for us even though as time went on, he didn't eat very much. But still, I made an effort and eating was a set time. I often got into the snacks after supper but I was losing weight during his final months, likely from worry and stress??
Now, my whole circadian rhythm is a lot different. I once went to bed at 8 or 9 and up at 5 or 6, and now I'm generally asleep by 7:30 and up at 2:30 or three. Rosie went through a stage where she needed to go out at 2 or 2:30 or else would have an accident right after he passed, and so my schedule was changed abruptly.
My eating time is helter skelter and often it's just when I'm hungry, then I get concerned about not getting enough protein or eating too close to bed or something crazy!
I know I'll settle into a routine, and exercise/strength training is more important than what the darn scale says anyhow. I think getting at least 20 gm of protein at my breakfast/lunch/brunch/whatever is important and something I used to do without planning.
I'm glad spring is reportedly (when? rain for the next ten days around here) around the corner and I can get outside and do more again.
Lisa - Happy Belated Birthday! Hope with the med adjustment your system will settle down quickly.
Barbara - so do you have a list of birthdays for us? I can see why you were such a great talent for keeping the fire department straight. And I'm curious - you said you worked in international shipping if I remember right. Did you work for a steamship company or freight forwarder or distribution?
Terri - you are very, very talented in so many ways. Thank you for sharing that painting. That scene could also be in Washington state not far from me.
Katla - so happy to hear you are able to get some of your old furniture back in your space. Crossing fingers the hummingbirds come to visit!
Carla - we used to raise beagles. Nicest dogs ever unless they got on a rabbit trail then off they went, for hours at a time! Agree 100% about the hair. And they smelled "doggie."
Mary & Betsy - I too use bone broth instead of regular broth in soups and stews. Good way to pick up some protein and it's not much more expensive than boxed broth.
Yesterday I popped some tomato seeds into dirt in my little germination trays and they are sitting happily on the warming mat. I'd almost forgotten about them what with all the chick action.
Have a wonderful day!

The nutritionist’s advice is good for people without insulin resistance.
I am insulin resistant, and if you are, too, your insulin resistance is highest in the morning like mine is. Your experience with sweets in the morning certainly seems consistent with insulin resistance.
In that case, walking and drinking tea (black) and waiting to break your fast is a better idea than crackers and cheese first thing in the morning.
Maybe you are already at a good weight for your height, Debbie. Could that be possible? Do you feel comfortable sharing more specific information about your height & weight?
Using a food scale can be very enlightening. A tablespoon of olive oil should weigh 13.3 grams, for example.
Also, packages of processed food have to contain at least the weight listed on a box. This means that a single serve package may well contain more food (and more calories) than one would think.
Finally, take tree nuts for example. Equating an ounce of nuts with a number of nuts (23 almonds per ounce) is an estimate. Nuts vary in size, some more than others (Brazil nuts, e.g.)
I had a client whose weight was consistent his entire adult life. He rarely snacked. He broke his fast at 10:30 am and had his second meal at 4:30 pm. He was physically active and chose happiness. He cherished his wife. A true role model.
Karen in Virginia
thank you for all the information!
I am not at my ideal weight for my height. I am 5', small boned and stuck at 143-145.
I do weigh most of my food but a few I measure with a measuring cup. Because I know there might be some that are a little off, I stick with 1000-1100 calories per day instead of the recommended 1200.
I do not use any of my exercise calories- Yesterday I ate 1025 and had almost that much left I could use
I do know I need to eat a more balanced diet and not just focus on the calories alone.
Thanks again Karen
Debbie

Her favourite thing at the moment is playing Swashbuckle on my tablet. I have some ideas for line drawings I found on Instagram.
Later this afternoon I have Zoom with my girlfriends. P's son got married last weekend with a big, smart, fanfare. (She was over forty when she had him) I expect we will hear about that.
Of course, I have just had to relax about not writing this week and treat it as a holiday. I'm a little anxious about the Easter Egg Hunt that my son wants us to host, as DH has got to think of the clues and he is going to be at cricket from Thursday, when I'm going out for lunch with Max. DH is giving up his cricket on Easter Sunday for the kids.
I'm sure it will all work out perfectly. Bea still believes in the Easter Bunny.
Rebecca - no reason you shouldn't be a bit nearer them. I know you are stretched financially, but a small house might be OK. Our distance is fine. About 30 mins walk. It's important that they have their complete independence without their parents breathing down their neck. When we were looking at houses here, my son said, "Not too near. I don't want to run across you by accident in the local bakery!" We are very careful not to interfere with their lives.
I really ought to make the trip up to see my elder son. I haven't seen him in person for 2 years! I see and hear him all the time on the media, but we rarely speak. A text is as far as it goes. It's all fine, but I'm beginning to think I ought to get myself up to Nottingham. I normally stay at a city centre hotel for one night near the station, and visit their house in the outskirts by tram for aperitif and go out for dinner. Then I fall in a taxi!
DDIL has a new book coming out in the next couple of months. She is having a launch party in May at one of my son's previous venues. It's a Tuesday, so I don't know if we will be taking Bea with us on the bus. I have to admit here that I am a little bit envious. The subject she is writing about, recovery after trauma, is very similar to my new one, though with a very different slant.
I can hear the glass bottles being collected outside, so time to make a cup of tea.

I know my middle son and daughter in law lead busy lives. Vancouver is big enough that the chances of us running into them is slim. I do want to be close enough to watch them for a weekend here and there, or if they want some "without children" time. But not too close that I am relied upon for daily babysitting. Lee said it would be fun, but he wouldn't do it for free (his words)!
We do like where we are living, close to the base for doctors appointments, and husband likes the gym daily. I do not want to live like we were in Hammond Oregon on the coast, counting pennies and stressing about monthly bills. Our quality of life is greatly improved here. It has to a lot to do with what eldest Navy son does in the next year or so. His next command, if he has to get another off base place, and its not an overseas command, he would not get that overseas housing allowance. He wouldn't be able to pay his portion here, and another place, which is totally understandable. He called us a couple of weeks ago to give us a heads up about it. Hopefully two major things happen. He makes his next rank up, and he gets the Japan command he requested. So its stuff that I have no control over. That's a little stressful though.

Absolutely knackered today. I haven't done my afternoon 'top up' exercises for two days. I'm all grandchildrened out.
I had a short nap and then my friend L wanted to phone. Happy to do that and talk about her weekend with a mutual friend. Then I had my Zoom, after technical difficulties had been sorted out. We ended up on a WhatsApp video call. Oouuff!

Rita the pickle juice works because of the salt as well as the acid in the brine. The salt helps to replenish electrolytes and the acid in the brine triggers nerves in the back of the throat, which cut off cramping. So, if your electrolytes are out of balance salt is needed in your body. They are still studying this, but it really does work for us. If you have salt restrictions of course you would want to try something else. I also make my own bone broth. And if I add anything to it, like I just did one time I made sure that it was not loaded with salt.
Lanette I make my homemade broth, thinking that it would be less expensive than what they sell at the stores in the powder, form or liquid form but, I had sticker shock the other day when I bought beef bones!! They were five dollars a pound! The only other ingredient I need is apple cider vinegar. it helps to draw the collagen and other nutrients out of the bones. I’m just trying to find other methods of incorporating it in with cooking besides making soups out of it. I really don’t care for the bland taste! So, I have to let it cool, so that I can drink it down fast like I do the apple cider vinegar!! But, the immediate results with my skin and digestive system are unbelievable!! If you have any good recipes that you use your bone broth in, I would be thrilled if you would share!!

Oregon refund showed up in the bank this morning, only six days after filing. Way better than last year’s months then requiring additional supporting paperwork After deducting Joe’s share and transferring 10% each to credit union and savings account, leaves $600+ to put toward this month’s expenses. Will have to transfer more from savings to cover the bills but grateful for what we got.

They’ve since merged with two other Japanese flag lines to form ONE. Was grateful to have retired before the merger and its related system changes. ;}

Are acid reflux and heartburn the same or related? Lately I’ve been having awful pain tightness in chest/heartburn in the morning before I even have tea. Two or three TUMS and I’m ok but it takes awhile. Have started to log it in my calendar to see if it happens only on the mornings after I take the pravastatin, but nope, happened this morning too. The first time it happened (over 7 years ago) went to the doc who, knowing that in some women heart attacks present as heart burn, sent me to the ER for some kind of blood test to determine if I'd had a heart attack. No, thank goodness so I guess its just heartburn. Whew! Know some of my supplements (alpha lipoic acid) have to be taken about a half hour after eating or I feel . DH got a phone call this afternoon, just before dinner. It was from his twin sister's husband. DH had written a letter to her recently, because she has never been good with technology and she is developing Alzheimers. The husband talked at him for a while, but eventually put his twin on the phone. It really was distressing for DH to hear how far she had deteriorated. He only found out she existed in his late 40s. He's always hated the husband.
So sad. I know it affects him.
