Ginny count me in on another user of you tube videos to learn how to tackle jobs around the house and yard. Lanette some of the jobs my dh took care of are so totally foreign to me. Last week I took my Subaru to the shop for an oil change. The mechanic said I needed work on the suspension (cost approx $1800-2100)... also said the engine had an internal oil leak and only way to fix that was to pull the engine. He said it might last a few days or a year but repairs would be about $4000. My car has always had routine maintenance and I haven't noticed any problems with the ride and no oil leak in the garage. My car is only 5 years old and seems to run fine.

I'm okay with so much of the yard and house care but when it comes to automotive, electrical and some of the plumbing stuff... I'm like fish out of water. I think this mechanic was trying to scam me... but I don't really know. My friends husband is going to look at my car this week.

    Wishing everyone a good day,
    Betsy in NW WA

Betsy - so glad you are getting a second opinion on your car! How many miles do you have on it? I know when I used to take my car to Jiffy Lube they'd come back with a huge list of things that needed to be done "right away!" and DH would laugh.

Gosh, I'm lucky I only got away with the $249 brake pad replacements quote.

When I got home I looked at the bill closer, he had noted there's a "rack & pinion leak" and "head leak" of some type. He'd never mentioned it, so I called and asked him what was up. He said it's typical in older Subaru's (mine is a 2007 and has around 112,000 miles) and nothing to worry about but look for drips. And I always do. I don't think his little shop does that kind of major work but the place down the street does.

The last time I had it in that shop for a complete tune-up, they talked me into something that cost a couple hundred $$ more and I don't think was necessary. I asked DH and he said OK but his memory was starting to go. But I told them to go ahead. They also gave me a stern warning that once it hit 100,000 miles it would need a new timing chain/belt. OK, sounds reasonable. One of these days I'll leave it for the full meal deal, will probably cost me what would have been a year's worth of car payments is how I look at it.

My 2 cars are old and I don't want to buy a new one. Maybe a good used one some day that has a warranty. Since my trips to town are infrequent and I normally don't go more than 30 miles when I HAVE to go to Olympia for something (rare) I'm trying to be content with what I have, and I'm stashing money back in case one of them needs a major repair down the road. I only have the bare minimum insurance wise.

My automotive savvy friends say that old Subarus and Toyotas are worth hanging onto. I thought all Subarus had a great reputation.

You might want to google "2018 (or whatever year your Sube is) subaru internal oil leak" and "2018 Subaru suspension problems" and see if anyone has tackled that. I do that quite a bit and it's interesting seeing other mechanics and "old car guys" weigh in. They can tell if you're getting scammed or if its a known problem.

You sound just like me in so many areas. Yes, electrical, plumbing and automotive are iffy. I tend to wait until something is at the "critical" stage I guess.

My oil change guy has always been great and I do tend to trust him. But he has never done an in-depth check of seals, brake pads, etc. like he did this last time. And I noticed he had a big crew just standing around. Looking for work?

Good luck with your car, please let us know what your friend's husband figures out.

Michele lots of different ideas about refrigerators. Another one that we have done in the past is to fill it up with balled up newspaper and close the door. It kept the refrigerator from smelling and mold buildup. We used to do that in our RV in Arizona. We found that it did work.

Rebecca, lovely pictures. You have a beautiful granddaughter who you are giving wonderful memories to. I applaud your attitude.

Thanks Joy, she's so sweet, funny and it was great to soak up her aura for a week. Had some great chats with son, daughter in law not so much, but we are really pleasant to each other and hugged good night every night.🤗💖

Daughter-in-laws can be a bit of a challenge sometimes. I have a close relationship with my son-in-law but I would say a civil one with my daughter-in-law. She likes to keep her distance. They reside in Ontario so only see them 3 times a year at the most. I absolutely adore her parents (they were the couple that went to Ireland with me). They are so warm and welcoming and were from the first day I met them. Not sure what the DIL's issue is and have stopped trying to figure it out. I'm just civil to her and keep smiling!

Enjoy your day, ladies. Going to venture outside and cut my lawn this morning. Will be wearing an N95 mask as experts are suggesting to help deal with this smoke.

    Joy

It is a unique relationship, daughter-like but so not. But its this gal that makes my son happy, and has given me my Athena, my granddaughter, so I am grateful. My son is 28 and has never had any other girlfriends, and married her. In the beginning they seemed so weird around each other, totally not like a wife and husband should be. Just like they were embarrassed to show their love for each other with the public seeing. So no hand holding etc, heck my husband and I were more lovey-dovey than they seemed to be. But they grew up, now they cuddle, argue like normal couples do.🙄😂

Kim - thank you for that suggestion! Who knows, there might be a budding drummer out there. If I don't hear from the drum shop I emailed within a week or so, I'll put out some feelers. I don't mind local music teachers coming to the house to see what I have here.

I think that deafening it would have probably been a good thing to do in Arizona because it is so dry there. The RV tech from Minnesota that told us about doing. They never mentioned dampening it though. I’m going to ask them when we see them this summer sometime. For sure next year we’re going to at least put the newspapers in there!

Had a bit of a row yesterday with DH. I know I have mentioned before that I have a "secret sta$h" that I keep for my own spending. I know that DH knows about it; but we have never talked about it. Well, he was in a pissy mood yesterday morning and brought it up in a mean and accusatory way. Like, "how can I betray him/his trust". Ugh. He asked, "Why do you need this money? Why can't you just ask me for it if you need it?" So...I explained (after some eye brow raises and eye rolling) "I take $25 each week and save it. For myself. For something I want. For a movie. For lunch and a beer with DYS. To get my hair or nails done. For whatever I want to do with it. I also use it to donate to different charities. Each year a certain charity, will receive $400 from me. IF I were to ask you for that amount to donate to a charity you would absolutely refuse. You give me grief if I ask for money for everything and grumble about how "we don't have money to pay our bills". This way, I get a little of what I want/need without having to freak you out. I don't think me having an allowance of $25 a week is going to break us. AFter all, you go shopping after I go shopping and buy things just for you. Special juices, protein bars, snacks, special milk, lottery tix. You spend approximately 2-3 times that $25 that I give myself. I don't deny you that, because you feel those things make you feel better and make you happy. Why do you feel like you need to complain about my allowance of $25/week?" Then, I left to do the grocery shopping. When I came home, he was back to normal and being nice to me. He has always been insecure about our relationship. Afraid I would leave. I think his RA and other health problems has jacked up his insecurity level to new heights. He is so afraid I am going to just leave him due to his illnesses. It amazes me how he can be married to me for so long and still not know me. Amazed and a little annoyed. Anyway...I love him and will keep him; but I am always surprised to find rough edges around us.
Whoa, those first few must have been the full marathon runners, they are trickling back, now headed north, while a whole bunch of runners are coming by headed south. Lots of flags being carried and a lot of military shirts and hats being worn. Extra cheers for the Coast Guard (we are a CG town) and the USMC (the branch my family and DH's family served in). Really great race. None of the loud cowbells, yet, because it is still so early.

ttfn xoxoxo Love to all! KJ (Kelly)

I too have my "secret stash", actually I have two. Dh knows about one and doesn't care, doesn't have any idea of how much I have in it. The second is an actual bank account -savings and CD that he doesn't know about and the paperwork goes to mom's.
Like your dh, mine is such a spender and spends even more than your's does.
I like not having to ask him for money. I have mine that I worked for and have finally started spending a little here and there. My donation to the church comes out of that every week, things for my garden, my zumba fees.
I started saving long before I even met dh. That is the big part of me being able to make it through after first hubby left and I was on my own for two years, kept the bills paid, kept my house, etc(that and being even more frugal/cheap than I am now).

I would have been cheering the CG with them. Former hubby was in the CG when we got married(then went National Guard after getting out of the CG. Went into and retired from the Air Force after we split.

Yes, I heard it was going downhill! I was spending $400 a month plus buying and cooking regular food for the family. Such pressure to lose weight and on months when I didn't lose weight I felt like such a failure! Never again!

I absolutely LOVE the Balance app. It is free for a year for all new users. It helps my mood and calm my nerves. I’ve been using it regularly since January and have learned a lot and it has helped me cope with my anxiety in many situations and issues I’ve been dealing with this year. I recommend the app for anyone who want some peace in their lives. Even if it is only 15 minutes a day, it helps.

Rebecca – I usually only get to see PJ twice a year (if I’m lucky). Once the first weekend in June for a day when we’re up that way for a friend and again on Labor Day weekend so we get an extra day with them. It usually costs us anywhere from $700-$800 for the four day stay (Fri night, Sat night, Sun night, and Monday night). Same here, PJ gets to swim in the pool

Mary – never heard of the newspaper. Thanks for telling me. Wonder if it’s that the newspaper attracts the moisture?

M – lovely yard. If you get to that conference, do you have someone who can be there for your husband?

    Lanette – feel better fast

Went to the cookout for this train club that Vince joined. Boy, do they have a NICE house. Did some of the jigsaw puzzle earlier today, got some pool time then went to the cookout. It wasn’t hotdogs/hamburgers (which I was afraid of), but brats and pulled pork. They had two refrigerators just for the craft beers. It was a nice day.

Got to make the bed, take a shower, then maybe work on the puzzle some.

Did 10 Minute Solution Tone & Reshape with the Figure 8. You can use the handle bands instead of this “figure 8” thing, which is what I did

Heather, aw shucks. Yes they could be fun . . .
Terri “… you cannot hurry recovery time.” Truth!
Rori “…on the train to Inverness” Oh what memories! Your picture of that stream is EXACTLY how I remember scenery from the train. Love you and your friends smiles.
Lisa generally yes, except perhaps at the duplicate bridge games… ;) Local honey at the farmers’ market, WHEN it’s available, is $32/qt.
Margaret  the flower. Was asking myself “is that a peony?” Ah peony tulip!
    Carol, lovely family!
Joy thanks for the pics of the flowering trees… and the cat. Reminds me of my dear departed Petunia. Love your smile too!
Debbie that is too close to a raccoon for me!!! Okra? Yuck.
Rita beautul pics and  the pooch.
Sue sorry your tenant was so inconsiderate. Next one will be better!
Ginny that sounds miserable. ((hugs)) What Lisa said.
Rebecca I  your take on the situation. Showing up is 95 percent of everything.
Lanette thanks for the Peace Train video. Brought a lump to my throat. Shame on the Oil change guy, he’s lucky it didn’t cause an accident. Good idea about boyfriends sons/grandsons. Hope those traveling pains hit the road and don’t come back no’ more…
Tracey “beyond high risk” :astonished: So sad for all impacting by the wildfires. Thanks for the “hot flashes” recommendation. Maybe tomorrow…
Michele “…Had to try it to be sure that it was orange and not macadamia nut…” of course you did. I would have too!
Karen I can just see you streaking along your shortcuts to avoid incessant chat.
Machka  your yard, glad you don’t plan to take the dry stream whenever you move  Really love your meaningful pics. Did you cycle to your wedding? Where is that lake? Are those your parents?
    Kelly Well said, every word.
Betsy sure sounds like a scam to me. Glad you have option for a second opinion.
Time to check the bone broth bubbling on the back burner and make supper. Brining, rubbing and rotisserie-ing was a heckuva lot of trouble to get organic roast chicken and bone broth. Might have to opt for convenience and get store bought non-organic ones.

haha- I LOVE okra just any way. Mom makes pickled okra that is so good- no holiday meal is complete for me with out a dish of them on the table. Fried okra is my favorite(had that for dinner tonight), LOVE gumbo with a lot of okra in it!
Hoping the okra I planted does well so I can freeze some for gumbo this winter.

    Ladies!

Interesting afternoon. As I mentioned earlier, I was searching for DH's drum purchase & info records. No luck. Then it hit me - maybe it's on his PC in the office. By some miracle, I was able to finally put together the password to get into it. He'd given me the first part, and that's what I wrote down years ago, but he since amended it a little. I engaged the "DH part of my brain" and came up with it after about ten minutes :p

Didn't find what I hoped for regarding many drum records, but he had a lot of photos and other things I moved onto a thumb drive. I was hoping I could open my excel budget spreadsheet records on that PC, but no go. It's running Windows 7. My laptop is Windows 9. I might download Open Office if it's still available and give that a try. Just as a back up of last resort. I keep a lot of documents in that file that I would not want to lose access to, and I've heard in new PC's, we're not able to have Word and Excel resident on the machines, everything is in the cloud at a price. Bugger that. I want to keep my stuff local.

Death in my back yard... I'm putting this in a spoiler there's some queasy parts-
A little bit ago I noticed Rosie had been spending a lot of time in the woodshed this past couple days. I figured she was looking for mice. So I finally went in there and guess what... a full grown dead rabbit, something had chewed off one of its legs, went for the belly and it was nearly decapitated. All Rosie could do was lick, I'm sure. She's no killer.

Now, what was the killer? I'm betting a large cat. But to take out a full grown rabbit? it was heavy! When my old kitty was younger she'd kill the baby bunnies and leave them on the deck for our breakfast. This must be a really LARGE cat! It was just around the corner from the chickie coop where the girls are locked up secure at night. Whew.

I may have mentioned, last week Rosie found the remains of a baby rabbit in one of the flower beds way out back.

Anyhow, I tossed that big bunny under some evergreens out by the road, away from the fenced back yard. Let's see if it's there tomorrow morning. If the garbage truck was coming tomorrow I'd have dumped it in the garbage can but didn't want to have to deal with that cookin for a week. :s

Barbara - I had the Cat Stevens album and played the Peace Train song until I wore it out. That and the Woodstock sound track! That was during the height of the Vietnam War and I was attending college at Ball State University in Muncie, IN. I recall the Kent State shootings. I was active in the "peace movement" - I mostly had a crush on the hippie that was leading the group, lol.

I even went to a peace rally in Indianapolis where some folk singer brought his guitar and called himself John Denver and we all sat on the grass and listened. Kept our clothes on and smelled some funny smoke.

Now that I have the "Peace Train" earworm anchored in my brain, I better close and tidy up outside.

    Have a wonderful week, ladies.

Do they ever come to visit you guys? My son has yet to travel up to us since we moved here in 2018. But I look at it as this way, we are the retired ones and they are the ones with busy lives. So it just is easier for us to travel down. Though many times I have taken the train, because I can just stay with them and not have to stay at a hotel. If husband comes, we stay at a hotel because he can't deal with dog hair.

Alli -- I just have to say that you are a much better person than I am. I am not sure how you still maintain a relationship with T and E. Seriously. It would be much too painful for me.

Hubby has been sick this past week (not Covid, tested twice), so I've been hanging out in the family room. The last time I caught my son's minor cold, I was sick for two weeks with the worst cold virus I've ever had. The joys of being immune compromised!

Drama from most recent oncology appointment -- not for the squeamish.
Had a bit of trauma at my oncology appointment on Tuesday. It was just labs (yay!) She took three vials from my port, and everything was going well. She finished up, put on a cotton ball and a bandaid and sent me out to wait for the results (I have to know my neutrophil count every four weeks in order to continue on my medication.) I'm checking work email, and I feel something rolling down my chest onto my abdomen. I look down, and I am bleeding. I mean, not just a little seepage, but full on bleeding. I grab the mask out of my purse to try to stem the tide. Nothing doing. I jump up and grab a handful of kleenex. Nope. I moved quickly to the clinic bathroom, thinking paper towels might do the trick. Someone must have seen what was going on, because the lab tech found me, asked me if I was okay and if it had ever happened before. (it hadn't) She cleaned me up and got the flow to stop and the put on a heavy duty patch thing. As she was cleaning me up, a nurse walked by (mind you, we are still just standing in the hall outside the clinic bathroom), sized me up, and said "Well, that's a sign of something. And not a good thing." I was so upset. I held it together, but it is the first time during this process that I almost cried while at the doctor's office. Platelets were low, but not like crazy low. Good news is that my neutrophil count was high enough for me to start back on my medicine for the next three weeks. Bad news is that my CA-15 test (cancer antigen test -- tumor marker) rose from when we checked it three months ago. Doc is not going to be happy about that, but I am due for a CT scan in June any way, so we will see if it really means anything or not. It goes up and down, who knows why.

The funny thing about it, was that I thought to myself. "thank goodness I didn't wear a white shirt!! (Machka!) I had a multi-colored shirt on, and I was able to clean up enough of it in the bathroom, that no one would have been able to see anything amiss. I was meeting a colleague for lunch after the appointment, and I didn't want to cancel. I cleaned up well enough. She is still in treatment for stage 3 breast cancer, so we share our mishaps with each other.

    I'm getting worried about Kylia.

Rebecca -- your time with your granddaughter looked wonderful -- everyone is so happy and content.

I'm reading along, not commenting much, but Alli's comment about E's engagement ring made me rise up and say "h3ll no!"

Machka I love your pics! I remember those first rides with your DH post accident. I was so happy for you and for him that he was able to get back on the bike and participate in something you both enjoyed so much! He looks really good in that most recent pic with Rhody (who, by the way, has grown into quite the handsome cat!).
ttfn xoxoxo Love to all! KJ (Kelly)
Machka - Your yard is just magazine-worthy wonderful. I think it's wonderful, too, that you didn't realize you've been promoted high enough to be conference eligible. Really great when people recognize your worth. Congratulations!
Hugs for those that need them, cheers to those who have triumphed...
    Later, y'all,
    Love,
    Lisa

    Thank you! :)

I hope this post is ok. Mental health is a part of overall health and a big factor on our weight.

What is the Balance app? I've not heard of it.
