Today’s gratitude: Shadow watching Tumble’s back.
No PT yesterday and a fourth as many steps as usual. Had to borrow pip’s boot to drag myself kicking and screaming to do one set of PT this evening and get today’s steps at least to goal. Thanks pip! Tomorrow will be better.
Lanette are you anywhere near that Tunnel 5 fire?

Kylia - I am attached to too many things and big items! I have four pieces of furniture from my great grandmother’s house, I have a hope chest my Dad made for me. I have dishes, crystal, pictures, genealogy paperwork. I have gotten rid of a lot of the years but still too much.
Katie - I should set a phone reminder to do 250 steps an hour.
Margaret - Beautiful flowers. I hope you are able to get yourself calm.
Machka - it’s incredibly stressful. I hope you are getting closer to the finish line and able to have it all closed soon. It’s been going on a long time for you.
I saved a copy of the memes. They both spoke to me.
Lisa - I need to write my stories down too. It’s something I should be working on now, but don’t have the functioning brain to concentrate right now.
My BFF is very much like Corey she pickles and makes her own salsa. She is discouraged this summer because she had a breast reduction in May and hasn’t been able to work in her garden. Her husband is trying to help, but not up to her standards.
It is cool here again today, the furnace has kicked in the last couple of days. Such an odd summer. I see some yellow on three trees already! I hope that’s just because it’s been so dry. Jonah and I decided it was a good day to make some banana bread. I went and bought eggs to do so.
Annie - at the home the dietitian’s were more concerned about getting enough calories into the seniors it didn’t matter the nutritional value as much at that age.
Heather - your sons house! Oh My! Sorry it was a rainy day for the excursion.
I love ABBA! Have so much fun!
Debbie - how tragic for Destiny and her family.
Barbara - It wasn’t the glitter sticker that exploded it was the glow stick. She had her face painted earlier and there was glitter that had gotten in her eye from us rinsing her eye and her rubbing it after the glow stick burst and sprayed in her face.
This season is the worst in recorded history since 1989. 20.02 Million acres burned as of June 30.
Katla - I used to be able to lay in my bed at my childhood home and watch fireflies. I’m so happy you got to see them. I miss them terribly out here in the West.
LeeAnne - beautiful
Pip - you are a wonderful decorator.
I took Jonah to the art club here in town tonight. He is 11, I think the next oldest may have been 5 or 6 and he was the only boy. I paid for two nights because that’s how you had to sign up. I told him he didn’t have to go back if he didn’t want to. He said he liked it though.
This is what he did. The top right corner is a meme he made. I’m not sure what it is.
When we got home our daughter texted that her car was repossessed. It’s not really a shock, but now Michaela is three hours away at camp and their other car is not worthy of making the drive. She asked to borrow mine but there is something going on with line so I’m not sure it’s a safe alternative. I think she’ll take DH’s.
I wish I had money to help them out.

Tracey - this is getting to be the last stage of the renovation. Been going on since January. Overrunning of course! It should have been finished end of June, but it will now be August, they think. They have got an extension on their rental until the end of July, and then it will be holidays and staying with her parents.
It has cost a fortune and caused enormous stress. House prices are falling and mortgage rates going up. May they both stay healthy and employed.
I'm sure it will be wonderful in the end.
What a worry we have about our children's finances!!!! Sorry about the car situation 😬
Last night's ABBA concert was a hoot. If you've ever seen a whole bunch of 80+ years old singing and dancing to ABBA tunes, while the ship is rolling about on the open sea .....
We had a blast and did three dances, when we could stand up! It was a live band and a singer in costume.
Went to bed happy.
Today is Bergen. DH has gone off on a guided hike. About 5 miles over a mountain. I am on a 2 hr coach tour of the city environs. I've been here before, but they are taking us out to a couple of viewpoints. It's cloudy, but dry. I'm hoping the sun will peep out for a photo.
Tonight is formal. I might just wear the sequinned top again instead of squeezing myself into my dress. It's more comfortable for the show afterwards as the glittery cape is scratchy.
All good. I'm feeling a bit 'end of holiday'ish, but that's normal. One sea day tomorrow then home on Thursday.

I do feel as if I've lost a little bit of weight on the cruise. Just more comfortable and a bit less around the middle. A low carb diet definitely works for me and I feel better on it. No simple carbs, with the exception of two portions of porridge per cruise, and after dinner I have two teeny petits fours. Teeny. No bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, desserts, cakes. It is only rarely a struggle, when one of my favourite things is on the menu. Mostly I am perfectly happy.
I eat loads of vegetables, salad, fruit, protein. It's so easy when someone else is preparing it for you!
Plus gym, dancing, walking, and LOADS of stairs.

Hi all.
I enjoyed the tour of Bergen more than I thought I would. Most of the city is beyond where we walked last time and there is a whole suburb of little white old fishermen 's houses that is very pretty. Big city with an opera/theatre house, associated with Ibsen, and a big link to Grieg, who lived here most of his life. Very attractive with the port and fish market. The most famous part is Bryggen, the old Hanseatic trading centre, now a UNESCO site. The 18th century wooden houses, originally for the mediaeval German merchants, (rebuilt because of fires) are often swathed in cloth for renovation!
The harbour is full of tourists, but I enjoyed seeing the real Bergen around the back. 250, 000 inhabitants.

Fireflies - I used to see them when I was cycling in the Manitoba area at night.
Writing My Story - I've started writing the story about my husband's accident several times but so far I can't do it.
Travelling - I'd be the one on the hikes and up in the cable cars. My husband did all those things with me before his accident.
I love being on top of the mountains.
Stairs - They do seem to work for taking the weight off!

Good morning! I've rejoined MyFitnessPal recently to try to keep track of all the food I am putting in my mouth so I can evaluate where I need to cut back. Have been on my health journey since 1988 when I first joined WW. After many different diets and continued health issues (arthritis, prediabetes) I am strugging with keeping motivated. Saw this group of 50+ women and decided I join the awesomeness.
I live in the "Tip of the Mitt" in northern MI. The city I live in has a logo that shows us as being located on the first knuckle middle finger. Hold your left hand up and that is the state of MI. We are at the 45th parallel so we have a short summer. Currently I'm a nurse practitioner in palliative care but my background is in oncology and so I see about 90% cancer patients and most are end of life. I'm widowed and have a siberian husky, Ace, and 3 cats. My goal for joining is to be held accountable. When you live alone, there is no one to tell you to stop and think about what you are doing. My brain is really hard wired to allow myself treats because I deserve it damn it! LOL. Looking forward to getting to know you guys.

Good morning all:
Arrived back home last evening. Had a good week in Arizona with family. It was, of course, very warm and dry. We ate out every evening (I always treat them). Needless to say I have to behave for a while! Grandchildren are growing like weeds-will soon be 10 and 6. Their conversations are always interesting.
I caught up with reading this morning. Can't comment on everything.
Tracey-very glad doctor followed through with letter. Hope you figure something out by August when paid leave runs out.
Heather-your cruise looks phenomenal.
I have never done a word art-may have to try one sometime.
Heading out for morning walk and then to grocery. I did get my walk in most mornings while in Az-at 6 am before heat. Going to be in mid 80s here today so want to get stuff done before heat goes up. Have to unpack and do laundry.
Take care all,

Good morning ladies!
Welcome Lori in Michigan!
Oncology sounds emotionally draining. I would have a hard time skipping treats if I dealt with that all day. Thank you for your service.
I woke up angry again after a weird dream. Hmm. I know I am angry with my Dad for ignoring me. He lost his hearing aid so he is worse than usual right now. He had a project to build a flagpole started around seven last night. He was so tired he dropped the hammer down the steps. The rain finally stopped him, but he is at it again this morning. I'm glad he is active, but there are limits!
I'm going out to lunch today, so that will be fun. Then I will cook spaghetti for my parents' dinner, and then exercise for me.
Happy Independence Day to my US friends!

Welcome, Lori in Michigan, ( @trug61 ) we have another Michigander here, but she's quite a bit south of you. Hopefully KJ will pop back in soon. Someone here said years ago that if you keep your environment clear of the temptations, when you fall off the wagon, there's not far to fall.
Tracey - Sorry about your daughter's financial woes - it does sound like it was not a surprise, though. Anything like that always happens at the worst possible time, it seems. Love Jonah's bag art, and your BFF sounds like much like Corey in the exacting standards--I seldom touch anything in his garden, other than to water it on his request. I'm here mainly to provide approval and applause, which I do in copious amounts.
In fact, while I love the plants and trees to look at, I have given up on being the kind of person who likes plunging their hands in dirt. He even weeds my flower beds for me on occasion. I'm more of a benign neglect kind of gardener. If the plants survive, it's wonderful, but if they don't, then they just weren't meant to make it. I don't take plants in for the winter, and don't cover them for frosts. Possibly just because I'm completely lazy! I see it as sort of a forced evolution of the fittest flowers. The ones that do survive are extremely hardy. I do love pruning things, I'll admit--but in all honesty, mostly I just prune the trees so they don't knock me off the riding mower as I'm buzzing around. It's more survival for me than the trees... Corey will not let me anywhere near his fruit trees...
Rebecca - Always love seeing pics of Athena.
Ginny - Welcome back! Glad it was a good trip to Arizona.
Katla - I do love the fireflies, but it's been far too hot here for them to be active. I hope as the weather gets a little less hot that we'll see them again. They were a wonderful memory from my childhood.
Heather - Enjoy your cruise ship moments, it sounds like the days are filled with wonderful things.
Karen - I think you had said that already... I'm sorry I'd forgotten. I'm also sorry the instructor discouraged you so thoroughly. I always wonder what draws people to teach when they do things like that. Why discourage someone without reason? It's not like you had to pass a test! I find it just despicable.
Kim - Your friend's place sounds absolutely wonderful, and so glad you're putting boundaries up to protect yourself while you search for a possible residence for your mother.
Corey has July 4 off, so has been able to sleep in -- not sure what, if anything, that we'll do today, but it may well be nothing. I was able to get the vacuuming done yesterday. It is the chore I put off the most of all of them. My procrastination levels are of epic proportions these days...
Hope it's a good 4th for those who celebrate! There were fireworks going off as I went to bed last night, but didn't keep me awake. Wonder how noisy tonight will get?
Love,
Lisa in AR

Lori - Welcome! I'm just north of the 45th parallel in WA State.
I don't know if you have been following this thread over the past few weeks, but several of us have been facing the same challenges about being held accountable (WW helped me way back when), tripping up over treats, widowhood and/or the stress of caregiving for family members with failing health, arthritis...aches and pains that prevent us from being as active as we were in our 40's. So many health challenges as we get older. What can we live with and what is fixable, right?
I have put on 8 - 10 pounds since my DH died just over a year ago. What the scale says doesn't bother me as much as the fact that all my pants are getting tight. Thanks to several ladies in this group, I've been researching upping protein as a means to cut down on cravings and substituing healthful snacks for cookies, ice cream, candy. It's one day at a time.
I am watching an interview about the benefits of Omega 3's combined with protein to prevent sarcopenia. I'll post the link later today. One comment that got my attention was older folks need as much as 1.6 gm of protein per kg per day. That combined with some resistance workouts can help us maintain and regain strength, especially if sidelined for several weeks due to illness, broken bones, etc.
1.6 gm/kg of protein, for my desired weight, comes out to around 120 grams per day. Most recommendations I've read are 1.2 gm/kg for seniors. That's around 90 grams. That's quite a deficit. So I've been concentrating on upping protein this past week (again, kudos to Katiebug on this list who suggested Oikos Triple Zero yogurt - 15 gm of protein per container) and it seems to be helping a lot. That and a huge breakfast of 30-40 gm of protein at the get-go.
A couple decades ago, I went to an OB/Gyn who was getting into Functional Medicine. She closed her practice and I've been drifting along on my own for a while. I will finally able to get in with a savvy Naturopath the end of August, and he's all about upping protein, gradually substituting good habits for bad habits over time, etc. I'm the age of his dad - so I'm very curious about this recommendations for the older population.
And his take on Omega 3's combining with protein to give muscles an extra boost per the research, and how much/what kind. I've heard about the benefits of Omega 3's for general health benefits - it's role in sarcopenia prevention is exciting.
OK, better close for now.
Happy 4th of July ladies!

Well I'm waiting for my mom to get up and take her pills so I can start my day.
I think my eating yesterday was not a rational decision. It was an impulse led by the desire to join in, and fueled by the notion that my projects are disposable. I know that I am included in my aunt's visits regardless of eating, so I need to work on that. And while my sister challenge is just a notion I dreamed up, I can still commit to it with the support of you all. The struggle is real. But I have lost six pounds, and that's worth something. Plus my knee is getting stronger, although it's giving me twinges today.

Machka, Thanks for the fun link. I have enjoyed looking at everyone's word art. Made a quick one of my own.
Barbie- Thanks for bringing our group into July!
Tracey- So glad you got your doc note and so glad Mikaela's eye is okay!
Lisa- Happy anniversary to you and Corey! I really enjoy the day to day stories of your country life and waking up with Egg (the one for which the world turns). lol
Debbie- Sorry to hear of Destiny's declining health. Sending prayers/vibes/healing thoughts to her and her family. Peace, strength and love to all.
Heather- Your cruise pics and activities are all fantastic! You DO know we all live vicariously through you and Johnny, right?
Allie- So glad you are getting some down time and time to rest and de-stress. How are things going with Miles at his new childcare? I am sure he is going to LOVE being with kids his own age.
Rita - Has the heat eased up a bit? I don't know how you can stand it SO hot!! My DD and her family are in Texas and they are all inside the majority of the summer due to the oppressive heat. Makes me sad.
Lori from Gaylord- Hello fellow Michigander! I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI; married at 21 and when my youngest was born (almost 30 years ago), moved the family to Grand Haven. I will be turning 57 this year, am at the heaviest I have ever been; but I am enjoying being my age and where I am (headspace-wise). I am on week three of really pushing myself to get some intentional exercise/movement.
Welcome to all of the newbies
Update on myself: I have been quiet the past few weeks. Reading everyone's posts, but focusing on keeping my head down, nose to the grindstone and getting my work done. We wrapped up the historical event for 2023 and have reorganized our historical group. My DYS was voted in as President of the group and my "job" in the group has moved from secretary to volunteer coordinator (which suits me better) and I will help with the advertising on social media. I also finished writing a grant spending report for my childcare business. I also got a years worth of paperwork (that was stacked in file boxes) filed and put away. I have had this long weekend off (1/2 day Friday through today) and I managed to finish a long to do list and still have time to rest and relax. I went to the library and got a copy of This Is Your Mind On Plants by Michael Pollan. I haven't been able to start reading that, yet. But will have time during the kids naps this week to get it started. I have also cut out alcohol, for the time being. It is a lot of empty calories (and a habit) that I don't need. I am on week 2 of zero alcohol. I don't think of myself as an alcoholic. I averaged one to two glasses of wine or beer a night; but I am amazed how many times a day I think the words "Geez, I need a drink!" Not sure if that is just a response to stress. Or a response to an addiction. I was born into a family of alcoholics so it could be the latter. Ah well, I have switched out the alcohol with water or tomato juice/bloody mary mix. I think if I am going to continue with the Bloody Mary Mix, I will need to make my own. The premixed stuff is very salty.
This fall my childcare will be 80% full. I am debating on adding two more children, which will put me at full capacity. Two more children will get me to my financial goals much quicker (3-5 years quicker). But it is always a crapshoot on what kind of energy any new child will bring to our group. The ages of the children would have to be older than 24 months. At that age, they already have a set behaviour/personality pattern. Hmmm...I will have to think about it.
News on daughter and the grands- Well, my DD and her hubby have been speaking with a realtor and are starting the process of moving. They will be listing their home in March of 2024 and will be in Michigan at the end of the school year! I am so excited! DD says that they hope to leave their home and be able to move right into their new home in Michigan. So she is busy purging, organizing, and cleaning; so that getting ready for buyers won't be so hard come March.
Still waiting for news on my sister and her lung and abdomen/spot biopsies. In speaking with her, she seems a bit more optimistic than when she first got the news of a problem.
Anyhow, that is my life in a nutshell this past month! And yes, I just read through this and my brain thought, "Geez, I need a drink!". Love and hugs to all. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

The view of Bergen from the top of the mountain that DH walked up this morning. He also went out again this afternoon!
He is dozing at the moment, listening to music.
I went to linedancing. The tour this morning was pretty good and I learnt a lot.
Going to give my diet and alcohol consumption some serious thought. The cruise regime suits me, apart from the alcohol. We have so enjoyed our fine wine and champagne, but that will have to be restrained. Definitely going to cut back on carbs. I've ordered lots of salads and protein for the day we get back and will think of an alternative to our lunch time sandwich. DH loves it and can continue, but I must try something else. I'm not cutting it out altogether, but being mindful.
Tonight formal and tomorrow our last sea day.
Ginny - so glad you saw the grandchildren.
KJ- lovely to hear from you ❤️ 😊

Worked. It’s hot outside so I’ll probably go in the pool and then go for a walk. Probably in the pool after the walk...lol After dinner I’ll probably string some more popcorn. Hopefully, it won’t be as hot

Jess called to say that the Sheetz gas station by her was selling gas for $1.70/gallon as special for 4th of July and it was her understanding that it was all Sheetz stations. So I went by the one by me. Was the line ever long! Reminded me of the 70’s. I’d just bought gas Sunday so I wasn’t going to sit in that line.

Dealing with pain and worry so here are some pictures instead on my whining.
My life is good except for back pain now (arthritis). It’s things that I cannot change or control that worry me.
Went to Sam’s and bought their amazing cherry turnovers. Ate 3 for breakfast, I just couldn’t get enough of them! I know, too much sweet and carbs. I know better, but it IS the 4th of July a holiday and my mood needed a boost! Been too hot to walk so that doesn’t help me much. I’ll get back to everything once the weather breaks here. Back to the 100’s for the next week. I never thought that the 90’s would be comfortable!!

Alcohol It sounds like many of us need to re-think our alcohol consumption, including me! Alcohol aggravates depression, has empty calories, affects your brain, liver, and kidneys among other body parts. But for some reason, people use it to ease anxiety (which it really doesn’t) and to self medicate. I know I’ve picked it up again since the problems with my son. The ironic part is that many of his issues are because of alcohol. In fact, many of my issues revolve around alcohol, my DH, my son, myself. Time for a serious think.
