Thanks @TheMrWobbly . So sorry about the work stress, but it did wonders for your run. Amazing! Must have been the highlight of your day. I hope things at work are better today. BTW, I'm struggling to get 80 miles this month too.
@kgirlhart You are doing great in that TX heat. Glad the skunk didn't notice you.
@polskagirl01 That was some serious workout! I hope you are feeling okay today after all of that lifting.
I hope you get your watch fixed too. And, if you are using it for your "body battery" to help judge what you should and shouldn't do right now, I would say that would justify getting a new one. No different from getting the light, "ice" pool, etc. Anything that will help you is worth it. Update: Saw where you weren't able to fix your watch. I still stand by my previous statement. I'm glad you aren't any worse for the wear after moving all of that coal.
@chris_in_cal I hope your prediction doesn't come true. I would NOT want to be sprayed by one. Having the dog get sprayed is bad enough....and the family I had living under my back walkway for a while wasn't fun either. At least they didn't really spray their den, so it wasn't horrible, just a lingering smell that I got rid of with Glad air fresheners.
That was a long TM run yesterday @Scott6255 ! WTG!
Welcome @catholicmum !
Sounds like a nice run today @Teresa502 . I snickered at your options when you run at home and totally understand. I have three options here, up the road, down the road, and driveway laps.
Glad to see you back @7lenny7 ! That 100 mile race attempt sounds really brutal. You did great and made a wise choice to stop when you did. I'm glad that your brother was there for support for you and others. Sounds like you had a great trip. Your other races sound great too. I love the setting for the Superior Spring 50K. Looks so pretty! That guy running in the snow in sandals, short sleeves, and shorts! I don't think that would be me! I hate to be cold!
I think I am finally caught up on everyone's awesomeness. I'll try to catch you up on my activities of the last few days after my run/walk today.

@catholicmum Welcome! I hope your recovery continues to go well and you are back to running next month. Lesson learned - ease back into it!
@7lenny7 Great to see you back. Been following your adventures on strava. Yours are the only sailing maps on my feed! Great race recaps. The ultra in Georgia sounds like quite an experience. The hallucinations are something else!

Another hot, humid, par for the course run this morning. No sprinklers but I managed to hit the school zones perfectly and avoided most of the traffic.
Yesterday was a rest day so I had some time in the morning before work. I did a short treadmill walk (ifit through Dubrovnik) then went to Pilates after work. I’m not feeling as sore after Pilates so that’s good. I’m going to try adding in a short walk on my rest days for a bit. I have noticed I’m not feeling as refreshed as I would like when I run after a rest day, sometimes kind of stiff. So I’m trying out a little walk to see if that will help and still let my body have some downtime. So far, so good. Today’s run felt pretty good when I started. I didn’t feel like the first mile was all warm-up.7 -
Hi everyone! Wow, @7lenny7 ! That’s quite a race/quite some races! And running in that heat! I just don’t know how you guys do it! I know in theory your body gets used to it, but from personal experience, I just have problems dealing with my other daily tasks if I go out when it’s too hot. It takes me hours to recover.
Today was the first day in a long time when my body felt quite good running at a faster pace, so I went with it and also ran 3 more kms than planned. It was a really nice run. I saw a hare in the forest (which I never have before).
So with today‘s 9.2 km, I have 97.1/160km for August.9 -

YAY! Got my 10km in! It's still with some walking, but it worked quite well. Ran out of energy at around 8.5km in but managed to finish. So I got the stupid Garmin badge for a 10k this weekend. Oh, still missing about 1km to my goal
edit: oh yes, I did rounds on my local graveyard ;p7 -

I'm with you. It wipes me out! I think you acclimate some, but there is definitely a cut off at which you don't adjust any further. And I think that cut off is different for different people. I can tell running is easier this summer compared with last, probably because I maintained a higher volume throughout the year and came into the summer in pretty good shape. While the conditions are bad right now and the summer has be worse overall, I can tell it was harder at the beginning of the summer. I have definitely acclimated some. But, the sun is a real problem for me. When the sun is out it saps my energy so quickly!5 -

I lived in a very hot country in the past. What worked for me: run after sunset (or before sunrise if you prefer mornings), take water along, and odd one: don't wear moisture wicking clothes but something that really keeps the moisture as it will cool you. Just a simple cotton shirt and pants for example.6 -
I run before sunrise. No way I would run when the sun was out in the afternoon. I used to ride Bandit in the afternoons and yeah we acclimated to it a little but it was still not pleasant. I have been playing tennis in the 104 heat but only on a shaded court! It would probably be close to 120 on the sunny court 🫠🫠🫠🫠
And sadly age plays a little role in being able to withstand the heat. 😞
This month has been pretty good. I think my average mileage per day will be up a 10th from 3.4 to 3.5 which isn t great considering past months and years but I will definitely take it. Now to avoid the current round of Covid which seems to be spreading here esp with school starting4 -

My sinuses are giving me a fit this week, so haven't slept the best and just not felt very energetic. (I did test for CoVID and it was negative.) So, this morning I did a wog/wun/quarter mile intervals on the treadmill this morning. The walks were at 3.8 mph and the runs were from 4.5 - 4.9 mph. Then, I walked a half mile for cool down. Total was 3.1 miles in 45:19 minutes. Avg pace was 14:35 min/mile. Avg HR was 112 with a max of 138 bpm. The running portion was 1.25 miles at an average pace of 12:53 min/mile.
Yesterday, I worked all day at daycare in the one year old room. We had five. They are really cute and good kids, so not a very hard day at all. One of the little boys will say "I wuv you." in that cute little voice. Adorable. Anyway, after work, I went out in the 88F (31.1C) feels like 93F (33.9C) sunshine for a short, 1.25 mile, walk before tennis. I sought out shade as best I could. Afterwards, I went and played tennis for 1h45m29s! The temperature was perfect about the time we finished. Anyway, it was a fun active day, but I didn't get home until late, so didn't post.
I almost forgot the big news. I finally signed up for the Space Force T minus 10 miler in Dec. Now to start get in some longer runs/time on my feet.8 -
Nice running @martaindale ! I hope the walks on rest days helps.
@Laurz9191 It's great when you have a day where you feel so good running that you go further than intended...and faster.
You're doing great @yirara !
@SummerSkier Shade definitely makes a difference. I'm glad your tennis court is shady. I hope we all avoid this round of CoVID. It's spreading here too with school starting and people returning from vacations.2 -
@quilteryoyo HURRAY for signing up for your Dec 10 miler. That is going to motivate you for sure the next few months. 👏👏👏3

I ran 3 miles this morning. It was 83°F and just felt hot. I saw a deer today, but otherwise it was an uneventful run. I am tired of the heat. It helps to run early in the morning before the sun is up. But I am ready for fall.
Good to see you back @7Lenny7.
Hooray for signing up for your 10 miler @quilteryoyo.
7 -
Congrats @quilteryoyo for signing up for the 10 miler. That's ALMOST the hardest part 😉
I am waiting for the cold front to come though Sunday night. So this whole week I have avoided going outside 🥵
Only 5 slow TM miles today.
8 -
I get a clean bill of health at the dermatologist. That's nice. I then went to La Jolla and ran amongst the rich and beautiful. It is a very scenic place.

Welcome @catholicmum - this is a great group of crazy welcoming runners of all levels and abilities. I hope your recovery continues and you can get back to running regularly.
Good to see you back @7lenny7! I too have followed along with your running (and sailing) on Strava. Amazed though to read the details about your 100mi race 😳 The exhaustion and hallucinations would have been terrifying! I am glad you made the right decision to DNF. But still what an accomplishment!
I can appreciate the guy running in sandals, even barefoot but NOT in the snow. Once I transitioned to minimal 0 drop shoes I don't like running in anything else. It was most natural to me and really cut back on the injuries I had. I do need to have a shoe though to generally protect my feet so for me the best of both worlds are the minimal shoes.
@quilteryoyo - so fun that you are doing that race again. It is the one you did previously right?
Also I am amazed at all you do between working and running around with all those tiny humans, running and playing tennis plus all the yard work for your house and your mom's. Makes me so tired just thinking about it.
Heat - I try to get out before it is too hot in the morning and build up my tolerance. I still don't typically go out if it is mid-80's, I just don't tolerate it well and Hobbes the Vizsla can't go with me either.
@Scott6255 - a cold front sounds wonderful. We are headed back into the high 90s for most of next week.
Between the tropical storm and treatments I haven't gotten out in nearly a week. I did get Hobbes out for a neighborhood walk today bringing my total for the month to a whopping 13.6 miles. It's ok though, I am just happy to feel well enough to get out at all.
@chris_in_cal - I love running in La Jolla! You should check out the La Jolla HM or the San Diego Holiday Half. La Jolla HM is beautiful and goes up from Del Mar to the Torrey Pines Mesa and finishes at La Jolla Cove.
The Holiday Half goes from Rancho Penasquitos pretty much downhill all the way to Torrey Pines state beach. It is a fast course and a great one to go for a PR. I haven't run it recently but ran it the 1st 5 years.

@shanaber Let's collaborate and host a "MFP monthly running thread" Race and Meetup at the 2024 version of the La Jolla HM. You in?
We can all wear Team MFP "quilt style" running shirts.3 -
Morning everyone!
Got in a 9k (09"29). Struggle bus.
Long 3day weekend here in England...
Cousin from NJ over, so probably more calorie carnage tomorrow night!
Good luck with Tri today (tomorrow?) @Laurz91917 -
Nice run @kgirlhart ! I'm looking forward to fall weather for you.
You are doing great @Scott6255 . I know how much you hate the treadmill.
@chris_in_cal Yeah for the clean bill of health and getting to run where the wealthy live. I'm sure it was beautiful.
Thanks @shanaber . Yes, that is the race I did last year. I am hoping to continue to do them annually. Last year was the first year they had it. We'll see how many years I last. LOL Sometimes, it makes me tired just thinking about all I need to do too. I'm am glad you are doing so well. I think 13.6 miles is awesome!
@tarun_yadavA Enjoy your long weekend. You amaze me that you get out and run early after late evening carnage.
@chris_in_cal That would be so much fun. Not sure I could do a HM and/or trip to CA, but hey, maybe.
Yes, good luck @Laurz9191 !
Thanks @SummerSkier @kgirlhart , and @Scott6255 . Having signed up for the race should help motivate me to do longer runs (run/walk) between now and Dec. This month has been brutal trying to fit them into my schedule.

@chris_in_cal - Sounds like a plan! Not sure I will be back running HMs by then but would definitely be there and could do the 5k if nothing else.

Note for my past/not relevant to running:On August 26, 2007...Temperature hits 94 degrees at Nashville, the
32nd consecutive day with 90+ degree readings, a record. The average
high temperature during this remarkable stretch is 98.2 degrees.
I remember this because it is burned into my brain. My mother had fallen off the roof July 7, 2007. My life changed forever. We had the worst heat wave/drought. My mother could not walk/move and we were in a converted garage without A/C. I slept on the floor beside her hospital bed. I had to quit my job and was trying to finish graduate school.8 -
Well here we are at the 26th already with only 5 more days left in August and maybe only 2 more days of unbearable morning running weather. I never did set a mileage goal but I will probably match my 110 from July. I still am not sure how I have completed run the year already with walking and running as when I manually add up my intentional miles (948 running and 365 walking) I am only at 1313 and Run the Year has me at 2177 which means I have done 864 unintentional miles or over 3.5 miles per day. I guess that's about right but that extra NEAT (walking at work etc) sure adds up.

I saw this in the 6 Minute Mile email this morning and thought it a relevant topic coming into (maybe) cooler fall weather when more spadework is possible and thought I would share for any of our newer runners or those who just need to refresh what the different speed workouts can be.
Experienced runners will be familiar with the Swedish import of the Fartlek run, but if you need a refresher course, you should check out: “Fartlek Training Is a Fun and Effective Way to Run Faster. Here's How to Do It.” Translated as “speed play,” Fartleks are an unstructured kind of workout that allow you to push the pace while listening to your body. They’re a fun way to introduce intensity into your routine, and by running a few miles with some shifts into race-pace sprinkled throughout, you can improve your speed and endurance significantly. The benefit is that they’re easy to adjust on the fly for a lighter or heavier workout, but some runners may find that lack of precision confusing. If that’s the case, you might want to understand: “What's the difference between fartlek, tempo and interval runs?” Interval and tempo runs have the benefit of a more concrete pacing target, allowing you to more easily track your progression. Intervals are often short and intense, making them suited for developing top speed. On the other hand, tempo runs are more consistent, and runners use them to grow their lactate threshold.5 -

The hardest part of today's exercise was getting up off the couch. I really did NOT want to run today. So, I decided to take it easy and do at least 2 miles and further if I felt like it. I wound up walking 5 min for warm up then I did 2/2 min run/walk for 48 min and then walked to rest of the way. The walks were at 3.8 mph and the runs were 4.2mph - 5.0mph, 4.2mph - 4.4mph. Avg HR was 132 with a max of 156 bpm. I ran a total of 24 min and 1.80 miles for an avg pace of 13:20 min/mile. Not great, but better than nothing.7 -
@shanaber I was thinking I could do the 5K too, if I'm not prepared for a HM.
Big hugs to you @AlphaHowls ! Your mom is lucky to have you. I don't know how you are running that far with the excessive heat warnings and poor air quality. I'm sure you are, but be careful out there! That's a great HR. I'm sure it's because you run so much. Mine always creeps up the longer I run. Question. Do you run the entire way or take walk breaks?
That's a lot of miles @SummerSkier !
Great running @yirara ! I hope you recover quickly!
I'm with you @TheMrWobbly !

No friggin Kidding..... sorry @7lenny7 but just a run or two is not acclimating. It's just torturing. Hahahaha.
Still at 104. I can get out and walk a mile or play tennis in the shade but I do see some folks running. Probably mad dogs and englishmen.6
