Good morning everyone!
Got in a 4miler (09"16).
Last night was heavy.... Thank God it's Friday today!
@kgirlhart Happy 33rd Anniversary! Hope you have a lovely long weekend! 😊
Avocados - don't dislike them. probably just guac for me. To dip chips in. That's about it.
Never jumped on the 'Millennial' Avocado-Toast bandwagon either!
(That should be a 'tell me you are GenX without telling me you are GenX' thing! Haha!)

Hi everyone!
Wow! It’s taken me several days to catch up reading the thread. I wanted to read everything before posting but there were like 150+ entries I had missed. Maybe my book club for the month?
So, I’m back from Yosemite and California. Yosemite was wonderful. There was however such limited WLAN and phone connection (which I thought was great), so I didn’t go on MFP once when I was there.
I missed a lot of very interesting posts, from @AlphaHowls rabid raccoon, to @chris_in_cal ’s ghost scale, to @tarun_yadavA ’s desserts/bbq/avocado vs. mayo debate - it also does kind of seem that you went on a 48state bbq tour . In Germany many people eat mayo in their fries - my 3 year old was very disappointed that he couldn’t order mayo with his fries while we were in the states.
I still have jet lag but did go on runs yesterday 6.2km and today 9.1km, bringing my August total to 43/160km (I may have to rethink my monthly mileage).
Spoiler includes my top 3 Yosemite pictures plus a couple stories about my trip
I loved being in the wilderness and hope that I can go backpacking and in the near future hike the JMT with at least 1 of my children. I did go on a special hike with my 8 year old. We went 11 miles and he did awesome.
The first picture of Vernal Falls is special because I really wanted to get to the top, even though it meant carrying my 3 year old almost all the way up and all the way down. The view did not disappoint and I am just thankful I had the strength and fitness to do it. Btw, I had to carry him on my shoulders almost every hike we did, which I consider an extra strength training work out. Including all water and snacks it was like carrying a heavy backpacking pack which also randomly moves left to right and sometimes pulls my hair and messes up my hat .
The third picture is the most personal and one I will always hold close to my heart. Our main reason for going to Yosemite was for the memorial of my grandparents who both passed away shortly before corona. We never had a funeral and memorial for them because their wish was to do it in Yosemite. The picture is of the landscape of where we had our memorial, so now I will always picture them among in this wonderful unbelievably beautiful nature.
So that rounds up my long speech. I really can’t wait to get back out on the trail and have more adventures in nature. Until then, I am happy to be back in the forest here or next to the river, away from car noises and city bustle.9 -
Welcome back @Laurz9191
Glad you had a great trip! 😊
And love the photos... And the grandparents story! 😊3 -
Happy Friday!
Happy Anniversary @kgirlhart! Hope you have a nice long weekend with the one you love. Happy belated anniversary to you also @Scott6255!
@Laurz9191 – Beautiful pictures! Glad you had a great time. I would love to thru hike the JMT also. I would say hiking with a 3-year old on your shoulders is much harder than a full backpack! What a nice tribute to your grandparents.

What a treat @Laurz9191 both the story and the pictures are lovely.
I'm super inspired about hiking up Vernal Falls with a gremlin attached to your head. You are amazing!3 -

Wild animal stories:
You already heard about the rabid raccoon, but I do have some others.
Chaos RaccoonI used to have three white German Shepherds, my loves: Bay, Faith, and Mercy. One night, they are acting out, asking to go out back. This is a solid door, I cannot see out of, that leads to the dog pen (what I call the elephant pen now). At that time, I had an old screen door that I had salvaged sitting out there. Ok, so I open the door and let them out and they went bonkers. What I did not see, was a raccoon hanging on that screen door and as my babies went out, that little scuttlebutt came inside the basement. So now, I have three white shepherds coming back through the door after this monster. Keep the picture now, I have three white German Shepherds going bonkers after a raccoon, in the basement, which is where I live. Chaos does not even begin to describe what was happening. It takes a good bit of commands, some screaming and defensive movements. The babies keep raccoon on the move and I am able to maneuver this crazy herd to a room under the porch and close the raccoon in there. Now, I have three white German Shepherds staring at the door to the underneath of the porch (a room of storage/boxes/junk). I grab a live animal trap (yes, I have already learned to keep this around). I baited the trap with tuna fish and went in that room, hoping little monster is not rabid. Took less than 10 minutes for the raccoon to get into the trap, he wanted tuna fish. I drove that little monster 10 miles to a park and let him go. It was a few days later, that I learned the neighbor had been feeding that monster, which is why it was easy to trap him and that he was not really afraid of me/dogs.
Mouse in the bedI rescued a cat that I called Almina. She ended up being an awesome hunter...in the house. She caught all the mice, snakes, lizards and slugs (and she was not an outdoor cat). Anyway, she caught a mouse one night. I am deep in sleep and hear this RAWRRRR! I turn on the light and did not see exactly what the deal was, but she jumped up on my chest and dropped her present on me....that was still alive....
The moleThe weird things that happen to me, you just cannot make this up. I am peacefully asleep in my bed. Now at that time, I had a mattress that laid along side my bed out of lack to have a place to store it. It was the bed I used to lay next to my mother's hospital bed for a year. So, a noise wakes me in the night. I wake up and that mattress crinkled a little and moved. I freaked out! I cannot find what is happening, I am still foggy brained and I cannot find what causes the movement and the noise. My brain is flashing pictures in my head of snakes (yes that happened). So, I am completely undone and frightened. I go and wake up my mother and tell her I am scared and fearful and need help. So, she comes down to my room and we start a search for the monster I hear. Two hours, as day breaks, we find this mole, he is in the plastic that covers the mattress...In My Room! I will not relate his demise to you, but understand this, I slept with the light on for almost three weeks and every little sounds sent me into panic.
The snakeNot sure how this serpent got into the house, but it was. I had gone to grab the laundry out of my bathroom and when I dumped it out to sort, that serpent fell out. My mother, again, had to help me. I am afraid of snakes (maybe 8 inches long). She corralled him and threw him out the door.
Over time, there have been frogs, birds, cats (not mine), dogs (not mine) that have traversed through this house. I have had the raccoon, mole, snake, mice and even a deer on the front porch. There have been possum under the deck and even a wayward chocolate himalayan bunny.8 -
@AlphaHowls we have so much food talk I was thinking a REAL CHOCOLATE bunny.... 😳🤣😂 Not sure I like all the stories but you definitely have some crazy adventures..... 😳2

Wow that's crazy @AlphaHowls how many wild animal encounters you have had! I guess chaos is drawn to you
Really great story of your grandparents and awesome pictures of Yosemite @Laurz91912 -

Oh yeah, I do believe you. I started running in the Middle East and my hottest running temperature was around 41C. After sunset. It's doable with enough water and by getting used to it as temperature rises from spring to summer. But going from 23C to 40C in one go would be killing.2 -
I would greatly enjoy 23c (73 deg f) to run in Right now it's about 80 in the morning when I run. I do see folks out running in the 40C sometimes when I am playing tennis (in the shade) but I am not hardy enough to run in the heat of the daytime here. And yeah you can sense how sympathetic us Texans are to your poor 23C hot run... Hahahahaha.😇😇😇4

Oh, today it was 27C, that's a lot hotter than 23C. Mind you, I know it's not a lot compared to parts of Texas. But yeah, this is pretty much the hottest it gets here in summer evenings.2 -
How to: keep temperatures down while lacking aircons: Check outside temperatures frequently: open windows over night if outside T< inside T. Close windows and curtains if inside T > outside T. It's basically a full-time job. If inside T >30C you're basically *kittened*. I think I'm glad it's not getting 40C here.
edit: found a curse word that doesn't get the kitten treatment!3 -
6 TM miles today. Dreading tomorrow's long run outside 🔥

Happy Anniversary @kgirlhart! I hope you have a wonderful relaxing long weekend!
@Laurz9191 - Love the pictures and the story about your grandparents. So sweet!
@AlphaHowls - I laughed and cringed at your animal stories... I have a raccoon one too but not as great as yours. We live on a cul-de-sac with little traffic but I trained Hobbes from a pup to never go out the door unless I release him. Well he heard a noise in the garage and started barking so I went to the screen door and opened it just enough to reach my arm out and turn the garage light on. Hobbes decided he HAD to go out that door and took advantage of the opportunity. There was a raccoon rooting around in the garage and looked at Hobbes and took off running with Hobbes chasing. Younger Hobbes was very fast and quickly caught up with the raccoon who changed directions and was then chasing Hobbes. They went round and round the cul-de-sac with one or the other chasing until the raccoon must have got tired and ran up a tree with Hobbes barking and chasing. I swear they were just having a good old time playing.
@chris_in_cal - I think Hilary is supposed to start sending up rain as early as Saturday afternoon. Hope you are safe where you are. We should get lots of rain but be ok. I am just hoping the power stays on. The best part is the temps will be down for a few (maybe 3-4) days!5
