I’m sad about my garden. The heat has been brutal and the tomatoes haven’t produced in a month. At first I had many beautiful tomatoes, now the plants are barely hanging on. My oregano died. I’ ve tried oregano 2 years in a row and same result. Must be too hot here for that. My other herbs are doing well. Onions are starting be become ready, but come out of the ground soft. Pre-cooked! I have 3 kinds of peppers growing, the orange bell peppers are very small but producing, the ‘hot’ peppers are doing very well. No wonder New Mexico is called the chili capital of the world! My potatoes are still doing well. I haven’t harvested any of those yet. Waiting for the tops to die before picking. One thing I can say is that I miss TN for growing things!
The Sunk Cost Fallacy This interests me and I’m going to research it and try to put some of it into practice for me. Perhaps DH will pick up on it??

My son came back for the football. His team won!!! He watched it with DH in the study. I provided AF beer for them.
They were both very happy. I managed to find a chilli in the freezer for the two of us and a pork stew for DH. We had planned on having skate, but there's only enough for two. Then stewed apricots and caramel ice-cream. Not bad for a scratch meal.
My son is totally knackered. He is now having a bath. He hasn't had a decent bath in 8 months. Then he has to look at a few work emails, then bed.
Edie ran her Parkrun, but didn't put in a stellar performance, unsurprisingly. I'm amazed she managed to do it at all. Top marks for not bowing out. She could easily not have done it because they were on their way to the other grandparents.
Going to watch our recorded French series tonight.
G texted to say she was happy to get the train to see me for lunch this week. I managed to get a last booking for Petit Pois. Today is her daughter's birthday. They have been estranged for years. So sad. She has made several/many efforts to re-establish relations, but to no avail. It will be nice to see her. Haven't seen her IRL since before the cruise.
I owe her the money for the (very expensive) Guys and Dolls tickets, so will get some cash out of the bank.
All good. Back to routine tomorrow and editing my book. I did fit in some gymming today after lunch. Phew!
Cleaner will be coming.
Don't know if my son will be here overnight tomorrow. They are putting in the hugely expensive kitchen worktops at the house and he wants to be there to interfere. He spent today sorting out Max's room, but no electricity.

Phew finally caught chatty bunch we are..
My poor brother had a nasty migraine and upset stomach this morning so it was only 5 of us that went to Brunch.. but it was a wonderful spread..they had a little bit of everything. Me its a waste of money because I don't eat a ton of food, but bless my nephew he can pack it away. And my friend Rob and his girl came also .i had packed earlier so..Shane put the stuff in my car and I was on the road before 10:45 but sheesh the traffic...
Oh boy ..I got through it ok.. but backed up everywhere..
Luckily Alfie didn't get sick in his carseat this time. But it will take him all week to recoup .hanging with 4 dogs for the weekend is tiring lol.
Have a load of laundry going and go back to the Rheumatologist tomorrow, Jean seems to think there will be more bloodwork involved..5 -

Hi Gals,
Lisa and others - I knew of what you shared but had no idea it had a name! Sunk cost Fallacy! I don’t end up in this rabbit hole often, but have learned to cut losses and run pretty quickly.
I love to donate – whether to friends (I ended up with a jar of dill pickles that went to a gal I swim with), to a person in the neighborhood via our next door app, or via a thrift store…and in my mind the items are going to someone who needs/wants/ will love them more than I did. I think that mindset helps me pass things on reasonably quickly.

Kim-I find the idea very evocative. I believe I don't need my shell when I move on. We certainly come up with some thought provoking things.
So kitchen faucet is biting the dust. The set screw really isn't functioning correctly-hard to switch to hot water and hard to turn off correctly. Tried to adjust, screw came out, doesn't want to go back in. Decided my time and sanity are worth more that that device (actually I had it put in when I remodeled my kitchen several years ago and I have never really liked it (handle has always been finicky). So went to Lowe's, picked out another brand to try, arranging for installation (which costs about as much as the faucet!). However, after getting under sink checking everything out I decided I have put in enough faucets in my life-I'll pay for this and feel good that I can. Until then, no hot water available from kitchen sink-but no big deal.

Got home from mom's a bit ago- unpacked most of the stuff. I picked up extra dry goods that mom had from the food program to give to my friend who has 5 grandkids that live there either full time or part time. This is all extra food that the neighbors of mom's that she picks up boxes weekly for don't want. They come part of the time and when they do, they pick through the boxes for what they want.
A lot of the things they get almost weekly are things mom and the others don't eat, like peanut butter, tuna, mac and cheese, canned fruit, dry pasta, canned veggies. Mom was happy to have someone be able to use it and Martha will be thrilled when I give it to her after class tomorrow night.
Had a nice visit with mom. Was really great that my sister didn't come out so just a quiet/restful time.
Took up the Japanese left overs up with me. She enjoyed them as they were something totally different. Saturday night I cooked pork chops, red potatoes and yellow squash, sliced cucumbers and apple sauce for our dinner.
We were up at 4AM to go help at food program. It was pretty warm after we got home and too hot to go out in the garden. We were tired and took a nap. Mom always takes one, I never do but sure did yesterday. Off and on for 3 hrs.Mom slept almost 5.
One thing that was new at food program is one of the doners. It was fresh veggies from Guy Fieri(Food Network star) They film his Guy's Grocery Game up there so I guess this is what is from his set.(it is real ,well stocked store)
Got up early and took care of the chickens and the dogs before mom got up and made her tea.
She had church this morning then a memorial service on the way home so I didn't stay up. No telling what time she would be home and I had to come home this evening anyway.
It was already 98 when I left at 11AM. SO glad my car has AC.
Ate a big Armenian cucumber that I picked just before leaving on my drive home. Had some great whole grain wheat bread, triple cream brie, red onion(all from food program) and sliced cucumber for my lunch when I got home and unpacked.
Need to finish lunch and check emails then get dinner started. Got chicken yesterday so will cook that and a big bag of frozen strawberries I will cook down and make jam.

Anniesquats100 wrote: »Lanette - I found I had a lot of traditions about supper that were not helpful. These days I eat eggs and yogurt in the morning, oatmeal with protein powder and blueberries for lunch at eleven, then a smoothie and a small portion of boiled chicken around two. Whether that counts as supper or not I don't know. But it's nothing like the social meat and potatoes supper at five that I had growing up. I find that eating the chicken especially, gets a little dreary, but there's such a small portion that it doesn't much matter. I'm not looking for entertainment or excitement in my food anymore, unless I go out.
So that routine works for me until we have guests or some interruption, then it takes a few days to get back to it. Hope you find something that works for you.

Have you tried adding different spices to the chicken?
I had fun the last time I cooked chicken-pressure cook 10 min then air fry 10 min. After the pressure cooker, I put a different seasoning one each piece(color coded with colored toothpicks) to see which ones we like most. The maple bourbon was a big hit. All were good.
I will be doing that again today with the chicken I got yesterday. Not sure which spices I will use, maybe just the no salt garlic herb in the pressure cooker then Montreal before air frying it- Want to cook and debone it so it is ready for this week and takes up a lot less space(they are leg thigh quarters.2 -

LisaInArkansas wrote: »Canned my first preserved item ever today! Have been really craving sweet pickles, and Corey is strickly a kosher garlic dill guy, so I took a bunch of his young cucumbers and made about three pints start to finish. So far, nothing broke, exploded, leaked, or otherwise behaved badly! Not sure what I was dreading.
Every canning day was such a production growing up, but I've realized, watching Corey, who does small batch canning, that Mama was also canning vegetables and fruits and such from a large garden for a large family. Doesn't have to be hours of sweaty work. Corey is also a relaxed and calm cook... and I am not. Usually. But this morning, by just dinking around in the kitchen, and poking my neck in to ask him a question or two, it all worked out fine.
He's just back after going to the Saturday meat sale in town and picked up the fresh veg and fruits. I had a Walmart delivery early, with the paper goods, etc. He's now making sausage, and I'm going to go outside and get a thing or two done. Promised rain sprinkles haven't panned out, but clouds and a nice breeze have kept it more reasonable. Need to pull the laundry in off the line first!
Later, y'all,
Much love,

If you're wondering, I take none of this energy and joy in the doing for granted. Carpe diem, my chickens...
that is how canning season was for us growing up- we planted an acre of garden. It was either froze or canned if it wasn't eaten fresh. Everything in 100ft rows, multiples of every crop.2 -
RVRita - so sorry to hear about your garden. I'm getting ready to put shade cloth over the squash and tomatoes and keep pouring water them, getting ready for the heat wave next week that I pray won't materialize. Finally am getting a few more cherry tomatoes starting to ripen.
Joy - Your simple supper sounded delicious. I've picked a few zucchini, like to slice or chunk them up and steam/saute them with store bought fresh broccoli. Add basil and a few chopped kalamata olives if I have them to give it a different twist. I always like to have something from my own garden when I cook, even if it's just rosemary or bay leaves. Hope I get some storage onions - they might end up pre-cooked like Rita's. I'm growing them in containers/huge totes this year.
Lisa in AR - I forgot to mention how neat it was for you to get the rain. I do miss that powerful midwestern lightning and thunder. Good job canning pickles!
Debbie - nice that you were able to bring extra food back, it will go a long way feeding young tummies. Thanks for the chicken cooking/spice ideas. I know I have some Montreal seasoning in the spice cupboard.
EGG ALERT: Thelma finally did it! Gladys produced hers this morning at around 10, Thelma hung around the coop, helped me clean it and lay down some fresh straw and when I went out at 2, there it was. I know Almy went in the coop several times to check out Thelma's progress, lol. She'll probably be next but she and Fairy are a few weeks away.
If any of you gals want to me to add info to the Accountability post for tomorrow, either message me or I'll keep an eye out for your stats and add them in.

read quite a few pages- two more to go but eyes are too tired to read more. May end up taking a nap today too- I rarely nap and usually 10min at most. Feel like I need a few hours or more.
Going to go to bed early this evening- up early for my walk before Ezie comes in tomorrow.
If I get a bit more energy/eyes not so tired, I will try to catch up. I found my self reading the words but not really focusing on it- need to re read page 15 and then read 16

Lanette- Safeway had their McCormicks Grill Mates spices on sale a few weeks back. I got six different ones.
First at $1.49 then .99 the following week with the coupon(instead of $4.99). I got one of each of the varieties that sounded good. A few I got extra on. Having my spices set up has really helped. My go to is their Garlic Herb spice but enjoy trying all of them.
Mom ordered new baby chicks Friday night(has been saying for months she was going to do it that night) she is down to just 12 hens now after a coon got in and killed some along with her one lone rooster. She ordered 25. She is only getting between 2-4 eggs a day now so not worth the feed but that is ok. We gave them a big load of old produce/bread from food program. They enjoyed it.3 -

she sells some and gives some to people at church plus when she starts baking, she uses a lot.
They used to have a lot more hens and sold eggs and veggies at Farmer's Market until fees got too high and they stopped doing market. After that, sold on their own1 -

Lectored at the church Sat. and then we went to Jess’. I know she really wanted us to go up. Came back today. Went in the pool Sat, then took a walk, then a dip in the pool to cool off and off to church.
She really wanted to go out to lunch today so I got a salad and had a black bean burger on top. I swear, I’m getting more and more sensitive to something deep fried. The burger was deep fried and I had such stomach cramps! This is the second time that’s happened, and I know that the first time was because the burger was deep fried. I never would have thought they’d fry them, but evidently they do
mferoli – welcome
Clothing sizes – I, too, have given up. One pair of pants I have is a 4, another is a 10. Go figure! Each manufacturer is different. You just have to try things on. During the pandemic that was fun! You had to buy the item, try them on at home, and then take back what didn’t fit you. Silly
Jess is watching a friend’s dog so I took her dog and the friend’s dog for a walk this a.m. I tell you, every time her dog wanted to go home but I’d pull him to continue walking, I could almost feel “aren’t we done YET”. Then after lunch I took them out. At first her dog didn’t want to go, probably thought I’d take them for another 1-1/2 hr walk. It was too warm, but it was funny how he went and then wanted right back in the house.
Went to WalMart and bought gas. Vince needed milk
Rita – I agree that it’s really not the guns that kill, it’s the people. Taking away guns only takes them away from the law-abiding citizens. If someone wants one, they’ll get it. Where there’s a will there’s a way. I worry about our future generation
Annie – yea for Teddy going up and down the stairs. I’m so sorry about your aunt
I don’t ask so much “what’s for supper” as “what will Vince eat”. I feel bad going out to eat with someone else, everything has to be so very basic. Personally, I would have like to have gone to someplace for lunch other than a burger joint. But oh well….. It wouldn’t help for Vince not to eat, he doesn’t like to modify something. I have no problem saying “no this, no that, can I have this instead”. Not him
pip – I know you’ll get your lead back. You’re one determined gal, when you want something, you get it!
Dinners: I usually plan out the next week’s meals so I can take them out of the freezer to defrost or buy what I need to buy. I’ll make, say, chicken, freeze it in individual portions, then finish that up and go on to something else. I don’t mean we only eat chicken, what I mean is that once/week we have the chicken until it’s all gone. So in my freezer is usually a dinner of beef, fish, pork and some kind of pasta for Vince
Throwing things out: If I think I might not need something, I put it in a box for the Salvation Army. If I haven’t used it since putting it in the box, it goes to be donated
Seems Jess is starting to get into growing herbs and lettuce. She feels that romaine is too expensive so she’ll grow her own.
Lanette – if you find a source of free books, please let me know. I’d love it. Volunteering at a soup kitchen, to me, is very rewarding. I feel I am so blessed that I can afford to buy my lunch, there are too many people who can’t. And almost all of them are so very grateful.
Got a new hamper and Vince put it together while I was at church on Sat. Our old one was getting worn out. This one looks slightly bigger, but it should be OK
Debbie – that is so nice of you to give the food to your friend
Phew!

Got my new Fitbit yesterday and got it setup. It seems to be working fine. Still need to get familiar with some of the features it has that my old one didn't. I am looking forward to Tuesday and using it in the pool. It will be interesting to see how the tracker compares with the conversion table I was using.
Time to go out and do chores.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA4 -
Worked all day long between the craft room and the spare bedroom that has willy-nilly become storage over the last few years. Between the rain (which was wonderful, thank you Lanette!) and the heat, it was a good day to take a break from outside work. A few more hours work to go yet.
Tracey - Been thinking about your next big adventure starting tomorrow. Almost (but not quite!) makes me want to go back... Hope it's a wonderful, life-changing time over the months to come..
And, Lanette, well done for Thelma! One more productive member of chicken society joins the ranks of the sisterhood...
And... they're growing so fast, they're no longer babies. Out hiking in paradise...
More tomorrow... finally sleepy.

Heather - I’m happy that overall you enjoyed your family being with you.
What a sweetheart Edie is. They are being raised well.
Lisa - I hadn’t thought of it that way. I have learned over the years to be more thoughtful about my purchases.
I loved the grape Popsicle example. 😂
I didn’t know you could buy other straps for Fitbits. I may need to look at them again.
I think I need to tell my friend I spent the weekend with about hanging onto marriages. Her Husband asked her for a divorce yesterday. I feel bad for both of them but feel they need to do this.
I guess I’ve been learning some of these lessons. The last time I had a job I was so unhappy in I lasted 12 years! This time it was only 3.5. I have done a lot of purging and I donate stuff I no longer need every few months. The benefit of living in a tiny space is you can’t gather a lot and still have a neat and tidy home.
Terri - it sounds like you are going to have a nice day and visit.
I have been reading with interest those of you who write about your meals and how they are the same, shared with DH’s for the chore of it. I really need to set out a stricter plan here.
I have only held two garage sales in my life, one when we moved from NB to AB the other when we moved from our 1200sq ft townhouse to where we live now. I had a lot of people tell me I wasn’t asking enough for things, but I wanted them gone. There was only one thing I sold that I regretted. It was a little stack of snack/dessert sized plates that sat in their own rack. I had 12 plates and the rack and sold them for $10. Much less than they were worth. I missed them so much I went to yard sales and searched Marketplace until I found them again. I paid $25 to get an 8 plate set. I didn’t realize how convenient and well used those plates were when I sold the first set.
Lanette - I have been missing people in my life. I have my girls, DH and the grands but find I spend a lot of time alone even if DH is in the house. I have been thinking about doing some volunteering, I joined ceramics for a way to meet friends. The theory was it would be a common interest. I have met some nice ladies but we only visit at the shop. I miss the days of neighbours dropping in for a tea or coffee. It hasn’t happened since we moved to AB you would think I would be used to it now.
Barbie - my DH has done the same as Jake, he actually goes full force into something almost an obsession and then quit it shortly afterwards. Our daughter believes he has undiagnosed ADHD as it is just one of the traits of ADHD he has.
Rita - our summer has been hot too, my flowers are all dying early and I see yellow on some trees.
I had an exciting day. There was a smell in the house that I couldn’t quite figure out what it was. I opened all of the windows and puttered around, a whole later my tongue was feeling tingly. Jonah had mentioned earlier that he felt nauseous. I asked him if his tongue felt funny, he said yes and that he had a headache.
I called the fire department in case there was a gas leak or something. I get olfactory migraines, so never trust scents I get, but was concerned when Jonah said he smelled it too.
There were 3 engines, the superintendent, an ambulance, and the police. They then called the gas company in. There were no leaks and the smell is gone I don’t know what it was.
I have rearranged and have my desk set up for tomorrow.
Lisa - thank you! I’m nervous and excited. I have not been in any type of school since 1995 and this is all virtual.

Tracey - do you have any agricultural land around you? Someone could have been spraying something. Ugh!
I was so lucky, when we lived in the middle of the countryside, that it was horse country. Just a bit of fertiliser in the spring. I would not like to live, in fact I would not, live where they were spraying pesticides and herbicides. The council here have stopped spraying the pavements. It's a mess, and a lot of people complain, but better than being poisoned.
Also, some DIY products, and paint, can drift in the breeze. My friend has lung cancer from his long hobby of DIY. He never smoked, but rebuilt and renovated all his houses. In those days, no one wore masks. Even MDF is full of toxins.
Good luck for today! Is their any IRL contact? You could organise a meet up once or twice a term with those who are local. It often just needs someone to suggest it.
I'm hoping for a quiet day today. If my son wants to join us for dinner, I will make a massive frittata with frozen veg, including artichokes, and the cauliflower in the fridge. They brought lots of eggs with them when they cleared out the flat. He is GF, which complicates carbs a bit, but I might cook a whole lot of new potatoes in the IP.

We had a grand time yesterday at my younger daughter’s. Elder daughter and her youngest boy came by train and DH picked them up while I help with prep for lunch.
Elder grandson arrived with a ‘friend’ who had given him a lift, and asked if she could come in. She couldn’t stay for lunch, but he seemed keen for us to meet her.
DH and I are planning an outing tomorrow as we finally have a potential spell of good weather. We are going to see The King’s Coronation Garden on the other side of Belfast Lough, and then to visit a new walk that has been created at Randalstown along a defunct railway line, which has a spectacular landscaped viaduct garden. I will take photos.
Lisa: They look so happy.

Today will potter in the garden, and work on my crochet.

Debbie-glad visit with mom went well. I am in awe of how you quickly are always whipping up something like a batch of jam/jelly. Sharing food is something more of us could do I am sure.
Allie-glad trip went well and you are back home safely.
Lanette-congratulations to Gladys! I find hearing the updates here fits me more than growing the animals!
Sue-I think you will catch on to FitBit quickly. Hope any tracking surprises are positive.
Lisa-great picture of family-they look so happy. Good progress on rooms.
Tracey-scary stuff with the smell and symptoms. Agree with Heather-it could have been from the fields. We pick up on that in different parts of the county, and often they are spraying by airplane so not as noticeable at first. Good luck on first day of school! You are closing one chapter and starting another.
Terri-the walk sounds very interesting. GS wanting you to meet her-could be something there!
Barbara AHMOD-enjoy the 130-even if it does bobble it is there.
Woke to thunderstorms around 4:30 today (must have moved this way from Lisa. Won't go for walk before work-don't mind walking in rain but not thunder/lightening. Is going to be cooler today so I will walk after work. Will get stretches in this am. Slept really well last night-am hopeful this medication adjustment really works.
Off to start another week.
