WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR AUGUST 2023

Phew, Kylia, that is some overpay!
For some reason, nobody does other people's anniversaries in our family. We do our own, but no-one bothers about other people's.
Well, things are still chaotic at my son's house. I'm not sure when they came back, but DDIL asked if she could leave Max with us this afternoon while she collects the girls. Not sure where from. Anyway, he's coming over. We had scheduled a painting session, so he will arrive at the end of that.
Then my son texted that they need us to have all the kids overnight and could we feed them. The beds sre still made up, so it's not too difficult.
So I dashed off to the Co-op round the corner and bought gluten free pasta for Edie, goats milk for Bea, Weetabix for Bea's breakfast, gluten free rolls for Edie, bacon, salted caramel ice cream and strawberries. Should be fine with all that.
My son is hoping all will be well by Tuesday night!
Glad to be of service. It must be a nightmare with no electricity or WiFi. Especially for a 12 yr old boy!

Adventures in air conditioning: 🙃
So, I ordered a window A/C unit from Amazon on August 1, to replace the old one in our bedroom, with the thought that we'd move our little mechanical A/C unit into the guest bedroom before the kids get here on the 25th.
In the meantime, I forgot I actually ordered it and ordered another one from Walmart (brain glitch). Which arrived here on the 7th, and Corey installed this weekend. Rather than return the Amazon one, which still hasn't arrived, we decided to just use them both... which was a good thing, because when Cor started to remove the old one from our bedroom window, it fell about eight feet from the window to the stone outside. Not good for a mechanical thing, that.
Corey being Corey, he had to take the old one apart to see if he could fix it, and when he opened the case, I literally gagged. There were hanging strings of mold and growth everywhere, and smears of mildew and it was just honestly the most disgusting thing I've ever seen. Please note, I've cleaned whatever I could reach on that thing, with cloths and long swabs dipped in bleach, but it was not effective in the slightest, obviously. Good grief.
Amazon is slipping:The Amazon A/C unit still hasn't arrived, so I went looking online, and supposedly it's stalled out somewhere in Little Rock (about a three hours drive away). There was some small print, though, that said if I wanted to get a refund, I could. So I chatted online with them this morning to try to find out what was going on, and it was a distributor issue--in other words, it wasn't stalled out, they were out of stock and trying to get one in to send it to me. Could take weeks...
So, while I was on the chat with them, I opened another browser window, ordered another one from Walmart and it will be here tomorrow. And I got the full price of the Amazon one refunded. Pleased with that--and with the fact that I'll have an air conditioner in and working before my company gets here.
Amazon really is slipping on getting stuff to people. I've learned if I need it quick to order it from Walmart. Arkansas, if you didn't already know, is where the Walmart mother ship resides - about an hour and a half away from us, up in Bentonville, so their distribution here is absolutely spiffy, as long as it's sold by Walmart and distributed by them. Just got to read the small print!
Last week was getting everything placed and where I wanted it. This week is deep cleaning. Luckily, I did most of it as I was shuffling stuff around from and to the workroom, storage room and spare bedroom/exercise room. So all that's left is the bathroom, kitchen and our bedroom. Ceiling to floor cleaning... I wish I enjoyed cleaning, I really, really do.
Later y'all,
Love,

The hummingbirds here in Illinois are gone & I miss them. They’ve headed to warmer places for the winter.

When we bought our current house in 2011, the furnace was on its last legs and we decided that it was best to replace the furnace immediately rather than waiting to see how long it would last and end without heat in the middle of winter. In spite of the cost We decided to buy a heat pump along with the furnace so we'd have cooling in the summer. We bought at just the right time when an interest free loan was available. We had to be frugal for the three years it took to pay it off interest free,, but it's the best thing we've ever bought. What a delight to have air conditioning all over the house on days like yesterday when it got up to 90 degrees and heat in the winter when it gets down into the teens.

Today's little experiment. I wanted to do something colourful.
Before that I pencilled out a picture of Max, to paint another day. Too embarrassing to do it while he's here !
Max here, girls on the way.

Quick Question ...
What is something or are some things you do or would do to make travel easier, more comfortable and less stressful.
Might be physical things like your favourite sleep headband/eye mask that you can hook up to music ... or noise cancelling ear buds.
Might be your favourite sarong to wrap yourself in or your favourite pillow.
Might be arriving at the airport 2 hours early.
Might be travelling less than 6 hours a day, then spending the rest of the day relaxing somewhere.
What makes travelling an enjoyable experience for you?

MFP Accountability Post for August 14, 2023
Debbie in CA - Still at 152.2 this week. 25 lbs to loose.
Walked 5 days, Zumba two nights. One day a total of just over 20,000 steps.
Need to track foods more.
Kylia in Ohio - actually stayed at 124.3 all week. really weird! so no change. 9.3 pounds to goal.
Lanette SW WA – no change, 5# to goal range. Able to start fitting into some of my favorite jeans and sweats – waist not so tight. Not real comfortable, but wearable. What seems to be helping: cutting way way back on processed food/junk carbs and added sugars/treats. Delaying breakfast for 12-14 hours, until I’m real hungry.

Kylia - I bet when you do decide to downsize vehicles, having the low mileage will help immensely. That Bronco sounds like a sweet ride.
My mom was a stickler for remembering anniversaries, birthdays, etc. It used to irk me that when we moved out here and away from the family gatherings, she'd make it a point to call or write and say "your brother's anniversary is next Monday, don't forget to send a card," or " nephew's birthday is next Friday, don't forget to send a card/gift." I think the family was secretly glad when she got dementia and forgot her motherly reminder duties. Now, the only cards I send are Bday cards to siblings and their spouses if I remember, and a little $ to niece and her family - who've been good at keeping in contact with me and at least saying "thank you." And a few Christmas cards.
Barbie - what a blessing to have A/C these days when we get the unusual super hot weather for this area. I opened the windows early this morning to try to get some cool breeze flowing through the house before the sun came up.
I discovered one good way to keep cool is to NOT look at the thermometer or listen to the local news "Another super hot day for the county, hot all week. Breaking records! The hottest it's been for two centuries!" I'm exaggerating a little, lol. Yesterday, I covered up the display for the outside thermometer with a post-it. I tend to worry about things I can't control, this took care of it. Even with the A/C set at 74, I still keep a fan going in the living room. The house remained cool until around 1 pm when the A/C kicked on.
Lisa - good job getting the extra Air Conditioner and good job catching up on the cleaning!
This supply chain stuff has me taking inventory of things I might need/replacements. After our old heat pump died during a hot spell a few years ago, I bought a couple spare fans - I was going to give them away but think I'll hang on to them, the current fan I have going plus the old box fan I set in the doorway are probably 25 years old. Glad Walmart came through for you. When I was in there shopping last week, I did see a big display of smaller window units and they didn't seem that expensive.
Yesterday I watched a series of ZOE presentations on YouTube. They covered interesting aspects of nutrition and health. There are plenty more for me to watch today.
I'm keeping the chickies as cool as I can. The sun really doesn't hit their run until around 10 - huge trees on the east side keep them in the shade. Yesterday I dumped a couple buckets of water in their run so they could scratch around in cool, wet dirt, and gave them a few "popcicles" - frozen ice cubes with peas and corn. Last evening when it got shady, I let them out of their run scratch around, eat some grass and weeds and peck fallen apples. Thelma followed me around, panting. She let me pick her up and I dunked her feet and belly in a bucket of water for a minute. She didn't fight me. When I let her go, she ruffed her feathers and marched off. Her dignity was wounded but I think it helped her cool off a little.
Stay cool, ladies!

Lanette, here's a thing I have seen people do with rabbits. They take an empty two liter soda bottle amd freeze water in it. The rabbits will kind of snuggle with it. I wonder if that would work with chickens. They might peck at it.
I used to go to fiber festivals where people sold gorgeous soft fuzzy angora rabbits, but they don't do well in the heat.
Just a thought.

Annie- that's a great idea with the frozen water bottles and rabbits snuggling to keep cool. If my girls were snugglers I'd give it a try, lol. If I get too hot I might try that myself!
I read that if the chickens' crops are cold, it helps cool their whole bodies. (That's the first part of their GI system that holds the food when they eat, you can feel it below their neck.) So putting ice cubes in their water, giving them something frozen to peck at helps. I did refill their water bowl a couple times yesterday with cold water from the house in case they wanted to give it a try. I'm so lucky they are in the shade a lot of the day. I noticed yesterday when it was hot, they went under their coop - there's a "crawl space" - and they could take dust baths if they wanted. The dirt under there is probably cooler too. Thankfully we don't experience this hot stuff too often.

Sunk cost fallacy can be tricky to wrap your head around, and it’s not without nuance. For more clarity in these complex decision-making moments, completely disregard how much you’ve already invested so that it doesn’t hold influence. Then, look at the facts.
Are you satisfied? Have you repeatedly been met with dead ends? Is there still potential for a positive outcome if you continue investing your resources and energy? What are the benefits of walking away and opening a new door? These are the factors that should influence your decision rather than any previously sunk costs.5 -
Well, no nap yesterday. Ranger called for me to run the entrance booth while he went to deliver life jackets to another ranger from another park. They met half way. At least I was able to train the new host on that so that was good. I finish there and just got settled at home them my DH calls and yells there’s a shooting at the beach! I freaked got what he asked for then participated in that whole fiasco by using my car as a blockade so no one could leave or enter the area. No one got hurt thank God except the guy with the gun who tossed the gun just before the Ranger knocked him to the ground to cuff him. DH and new host stayed with Ranger and guarded the gun until the police made it here. We are way out in the county so it takes police at least 15-20 minutes to get here. Meanwhile it was just the 1 ranger and us. Had to block traffic until 8 PM when I went to get our heavy duty flashlights so DH could clear the rest of the park and lock down the gate for that area. That was when the police left with the arrested. What a crazy day!!

I responded about the chickens before reading this post- you already did what I suggested with the "popcicles"
We do not have AC here. Dh does have a window unit in his room and ds used to(his quit and he said he is ok with out it, just uses a fan). I have the doors open and can turn on a few fans in the living room if needed. That room usually stays pretty cool which is great during the summer, not so much in the winter.
Woke up early, heard son leaving. First day back at the JC. Going to a different one. The Napa JC where he took a class a year ago is his preferred one but the welding program there is for full time only. He is going to Solano JC where he can take a class at a time and still work almost full time(just taking one extra day off from work which he could actually work if he went in later but doesn't need to do that right now). Hope this is something that he likes and keeps going. He did say that it will take him 2 yrs to get his certificate at this school.
Got up, fed all the cats and the wild birds and then walked an hour. Already getting a bit warm.
Going to make the birria tacos today, or at least have the meat ready.
Did some decluttering in the living room last night while I watched tv- did the easy part. Will work on the far corner later today I think. Do need to clean out the catio. Nice to have all day and tomorrow and the next day to do what I want. Now, if dh was out of town for those three days, would be even better. No interuptions that way.
Dishes to get done first. That is after I finish catching up here and having my tea.
Breakfast was two string cheese and an apricot with my tea
Class tonight.

With my first husband, I was neglectful of all that. I allowed criticism to be a way of life. When I went on a course which told us to spend a week without criticising our partner, (he didn't know about the instructions), he told me that he felt so much better at the end of that week. Contempt is the biggest killer of a marriage.
Making small 'bids' towards your partner, noticing when they make a 'bid' and responding to it. Appreciating their love language. Yesterday DH said that we should go out for a meal one day this week. That was his bid to say, we need some 'close' time to do something together.
Sometimes it really does work to 'fake it till you make it'. If I make the effort to be loving, it usually turns out that I am.

Accountability:
Tomorrow is "accountability" day. If anyone wants to be added to my post, please message me today.
I have changed my criteria. I have often said, I don't care if the scale shows I weigh 800 lbs, if I can fit comfortably in my favorite pants, that lying scale be d@mned. I mean it.
I'll keep tracking how close or far I am from my goal range just for data, but not obsess over that pound or two up or down.
I'm starting to feel the same way about the tape measure. How can my waist be an inch or two larger than last week and my pants fit comfortably around the waist? Same with the hips - loss of an inch, ten years ago would have been great. Now, still tight - I guess I'm not taking into account the extra baggage in my saggy rear, lol. Gravity.
Have a great Sunday, peeps. Hug the one you love. Love the one you're with and all that.

We take days off by leaving the park. I’ve tried putting our sign on ‘Off Duty” and have a sign on the door with hours, but they are ignored. Once I had my sign on off duty for a month, didn’t make any difference. People have no respect for each other any more. If they want something, they want it now!!
I also had the toilet paper doll, a few crocheted blankets and most of the rest of the stuff in that picture! LOL.

Chaos here! But wonderful! Arrived with lots of baggage.
Managed to get them all fed and treated to dessert. DH and I ate shortly after, while Edie painted. Bea and Max are playing Nintendo. Edie very peaceful. Max being very patient.
We have to get them all ready to go to clubs by 8 am tomorrow, together with packed lunch! DDIL is coming over at 7.30 for a shower. Bea and Edie are at Tri club (triathlon training).
I was feeling a little frazzled, but I'm calming down now. They won't be late to bed.

Good Saturday!
Yes, the Bronco is fun. It rides and drives wonderfully. Yes, the insurance is the awful part of owning so many. They are all low mileage though which will help if we decide to downsize-haha!
Machka I am glad your husband managed. It does bring some peace of mind to us as well. I won't forget the trepidation I felt when leaving my DH for a week the first time even though his mom lived next door! His "friends" were suppose to take him to dinner a couple of times. No shows, but he didn't tell me until I came home. He didn't starve as I had left things he could microwave plus fresh milk and cereals. I don't worry so much now. I think it is good for caregivers to be able to have some alone time even if it is business.
So I made a not happy discovery this morning....
I have always been a member of the IBTC. About 10 yrs ago I got a bra fitting after loosing a lot of weight. I wasn't sure whether to hug the lady or smack her when she told me I wasn't an A cup but a C with side sag! Well, this morning, I noticed sagging boobs! When did that happen? I realize I am 60 but it seems to have occurred over night! Husband says they are fine
I started this on Saturday and here it is Sunday evening! I am glad I saved it!
Lisa Great Job on rooms!
Allie Self care is important! You have continued to be a trouper in spite of all things. Just because you accept it doesn't mean you necessarily have to like it.
Rita I hope you are feeling better today! Scary!
Machka Thank you for the brain injury explanation. My DH was in an awful Jeep accident when he was 19. Head vs tree. 9 skulls fractures and partial cut of the optic nerve on the right eye (hence the very limited sight on that eye.) He told me when we met that the injury had affected his way of life and thinking. Your explanation helps me to understand better. Since I didn't know him before, I just know him as he is now.
Tracey Congratulations on the computer! I need to set up my new tablet.
Rebecca Keep posting pics! I had a wonderful salad yesterday that I was unsure about but tried. Spinach, Grilled portabella mushroom, grilled chicken, black olives, tomatoes, red onions, cajun spices, and ranch dressing. It was wonderful!
Rori I am so excited for you!
Well, Happy Monday!
Made it through the weekend, unfortunately not unscathed! Went to the local Dairy shed last night with a bunch of friends. We were there an hour and I got stung on the back of the right leg by a yellow jacket. I pulled out the stinger and we headed right home. Ice, Benadryl, and Tylenol. Swollen larger than my hand this morning, so will head to doctor. Everyone wanted me to go to the ER but no need this time as no trouble breathing.
I stirred up a hornets nest with my youngest daughter again.......unintentionally.....
I was busy cleaning off my desk (yay- it is done!) When I realized that both my daughters have anniversaries this month. I wished her a happy anniversary, and apparently it was her older sister's not hers. I missed hers on the 9th. I apologized and said happy belated anniversary. She still went off on FB about her family forgetting all about important dates with them. Whatever.....I have always sucked at dates....even more so when I am overwhelmed, which she should relate to. I have bent over backwards to help them. Some people are never happy. We were even at their house on Saturday night and had a good time visiting. Oh well......
My accomplishments this weekend were clearing off my desk that was overflowing. It is so nice to not see it piled up. I also moved the shredder from the guest room to the side of my desk. Maybe I will get less pile up.Also finished up our reservation for this coming weekend in TN.
I overpaid on our cabin for September....oops....like $1600 dollars over. Owner is offering refund or keeping it as credit for next year, per my suggestion. As I have already paid that credit card I am good either way. She said she would have caught it next week when she did the books for the month.
Hugs to those that want or need them (((HUGS)))
Congratulations to victories both with the scale or NSV!
Love and gratitude for all of you,
Kylia in Ohio
I sometimes put TOO many flavors in a salad that it becomes a flavor I don't like. Now I do tend to saute onion, some garlic, mushrooms, with hamburger, taco spices, white beans and black olives. All the things extend the taco meat as I usually only put a bit in, (since its just for me). I sometimes fry up the hamburger with taco packet and put it in a container. Husband will eat that, but once I put in onions and mushrooms he won't. But I do like the sauerkraut in a salad! It gives it a kick! I also put the sauerkraut with fresh cabbage, a bit of relish and mayo, and put in a fish taco. My fish tacos are just a beer battered fillet, on a street taco sized tortilla.🤗

Rebecca--Happy for Lee's reports. I enjoy your food posts and gives me ideas. Thanks.
Allie--I would be surprised if you were not hurt by the wedding and the whole thing. It just means you are human. HUGS!!
Lisa--Glad to see your daughter and family are safe. Your room looks very nice. Lots of room.
RVRita--How scary. Glad you are ok. Between the ER visit and the beach shooting you have been busy. Glad you are ok.
Carol--Happy Birthday!
Michelle--I know hotel rates are crazy. It is peak vacation time so they up the prices.

Tracey--Great news on getting your new computer all set up. Very pretty.
Had a nice weekend. I was sorting though old pictures and was texting them to my kids and niece. It was fun sharing with them. I am just getting started on the picture project and it will take awhile. 50 years worth of pictures. I even found some of when I was young and my parents.

Afternoon ladies
Well it has been a nice day..
Took Doris grocery shopping..her eyesight is getting bad and its hard for her to drive,so I told her anytime she needs a ride to let me know..
And then I took her to a nice lunch at an italian restaurant.. we both enjoyed it..
Love spending time with her,she is like my 2nd mom and when she passes its going to hurt me so..
Today is my sweet Alfies 6th Birthday.. so he is getting extra treats..
Tomorrow is Toms 71st Birthday.. Alfie and I got him a card and a small gift certificate..they always get me something..
Went for a walk in the neighborhood with miss Josie and passed out on the way home..
Machka-traveling ..with Tom we drove alot and stayed at motel 6 alot.
Me I fly to where I need to go.. I bring something for my ears and a small soft throw that I can use as a shawl or blanket.
Only think I don't enjoy is the take off and landings... so I take a 1/2 a valium before we take off..and im good.
I also do wheelchair assistance because especially in the larger airports there is no way i could get from point A to point B and for a 5 buck tip.. im all set..
I like trying new things. And visiting with family.. when I went to the Wedding in Nashville I got to hang out with my aunt and im glad I did.. because she is in a nursing home now she had 2 small strokes one on each side of her brain.
She is still pretty much with it.. but im glad I got to spent time with her at home .6 -

Oh my! Two young ladies wanting to shower. Clothes everywhere. No idea what is clean or dirty. Bea needed an eye mask because Edie had the light on to read Little Women. I had to change the beds to summer duvets.
Max showered in DH'S bathroom and then stayed up for Monday quiz night. He got some of the answers right!
Now all in bed.
We have got to be up early to be ready for DDIL to take the girls to tri-club. Max is going to a friend. There are swimming costumes drying and towels all over. I will be making them packed lunch.
I do get tense about it all, but really they are marvellous Edie did a lovely flower/blob/abstract painting and then painted a postcard to thank the other grandparents for having them last week. She said that her grandmother liked bumble bees and her grandfather liked golf, so she did a picture of a bee playing golf and missing a hole! What a girl!
Hope I sleep tonight.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxxx8
