I have found if you keep things "at the ready" you are more apt to use them. Just a visual reminder. Now most of us have our coffee makers out on the counter 24/7. Can you imagine the thought of getting out a coffee maker every morning to use it? I shutter at the thought!😆 I have my rice cooker out these days. Its got a steamer basket so that's nice. There's a comedian that talks about never having to worry about not seeing around an Asian kitchen at night. There's always that red glow from their rice cooker going🤗! I like that thought though I don't cook rice at night.🙄😁

I don't leave the rice cooker on at night(unless by chance I forgot to unplug it-I don't eat much rice but it is a must for dh, even though, as a diabetic, it shouldn't be)
BUT, there are so many "little red glow lights" around the house that I never turn lights on at night. Red lights from electronics, fairy lights in both bathrooms, outdoor flood light in the front yard that lights up the kitchen. Last time I counted around12-14 different little "red lights" just in the bedroom alone. That doesn't help with me sleeping- need to pull the eye mask out again.
Debbie
We've got the lights from our clocks, but those are the only little red lights in the bedroom.
And I have trouble sleeping without my mask now.
M in Oz
I have used my masks but the ones I have tried I am not comfortable in- I don't like the feeling of the pressure on them- I usually loosen the strap so it is barely on.
Son and dh both have no trouble sleeping with the lights on- son says he doesn't sleep as sound so he can hear his alarm in the morning(otherwise, he sleeps right through the alarm)
Dh usually falls asleep with the lights on, tv on w/the volumn up louder than I would want it when I was actually awake and watching it. Many nights I am looking around for the remote, usually under him.
I don't like the fairy lights on in the master bathroom but have gotten used to them and the big thing is that it helps so dh doesn't turn the light/fan(one switch) on during the night to use the bathroom. That is the worst- light is bright, fan is loud, even though the box said it is quiet(quieter than the old one but not as quiet as I want it). I used to close the door but now have to keep it open for the cats-one litter box is now in there.
What if you just had a night light in the bathroom, for husband to see his way to the bathroom?

Oh, there are a lot more, just the others I don't see lights on during the night- the room is full of all kinds of electronics. DH thinks he needs all that stuff in there and his room too. I don't even know what some of them are. He even has a projector and big screen(battery operated that comes down and covers almost the whole closet door. He used it when he first got it to watch movies but rarely uses it anymore. There is one from the cat's fountain and the mini bug catcher that are both on my side of the room(bug catcher is on the floor- don't mind it beings I haven't gotten bitten by mosquitos since he put it there and catches any fleas that might be there).
Do you have another room, even a very small room, in which a single bed would fit ... where you can go to sleep in peace?
M in Oz
no, but I can, and have slept on the couch in the living room. Maybe one day I will get my sewing room cleaned out all the way and I can put something in there(don't think I will). Too much craft stuff in there.
Sleep is a very high priority for me ... above exercise and eating!
I would go to great lengths to make sure I have a quiet sleeping place to retire to each night.
My husband and I have a sleeping pod. We separated our king-sized bed into two twin beds, and moved them so that our heads are in opposite corners.
We each have a night table, there's my sock shelf and there's a very small, but tall chest of drawers for odds and ends ... nothing either of us need to access while the other one is sleeping.
The room is dark because the light blocking curtains are always closed.
It's a small room - only for sleeping and reading.
The room next to the sleeping pod is our dressing room. It holds all the wardrobes, dressers, etc.

Accidentally used something on my face the other day with essential oils in it, or possibly just one essential oil, but that's all it takes. A few years ago, I discovered I was allergic to essential oils so I've avoided them, but occasionally someone sneaks them into something.
Now suffering from an allergic reaction.
I need to get ahold of topical corticosteroids / hydrocortisone cream.
https://www.healthline.com/health/essential-oil-allergic-reaction
What are the symptoms of an allergic reaction to essential oils?
A couple are:
Contact dermatitis
"Contact dermatitis is an itchy, red rash that develops when certain substances touch your skin directly.
There are two types: irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis.
In addition to itchy, red rash, both types of contact dermatitis share other symptoms:
- dry, cracked, or scaly skin
- oozing blisters or bumps
- burning and stinging sensation
Allergic contact dermatitis is the most common allergic reaction to essential oils."
"It’s a delayed hypersensitivity reaction, which means that you might not notice symptoms until 12 to 72 hours after exposure."
Hives
"Hives (urticaria) have many possible triggers, including food, medication, insect stings, infections, and more. They can appear on any part of your body and are characterized by:
- raised red bumps (welts) that often itch
- welts that can vary in size and often repeatedly appear and fade"

The fire alarm chirped again in the middle of the night. This is driving me crazy. The only way I know to stop it is to start the air conditioning. So it is going to be mighty chilly. Maybe I can call the furnace guy in the morning. I tried to get my father to agree to have all the alarms replaced because they are all twenty years old. But he doesn't hear the alarm so it doesn't bother him. He is getting more and more adrift from reality. But he dismisses my input. What is that saying about the lunatics running the asylum?
Yesterday he had a dentist appointment while I went to visit Mom in rehab. I thought he would go by himself later, but he blew it off. He just ignores anything he doesn't feel like doing, like putting his stuff away or sorting the mail. I need to stop thinking of him as a responsible adult when his dementia is getting so bad. But I can't even nag him because he doesn't hear me. His new hearing aids come on the 17th so that should help until he loses them.
Then I get upset and lose sleep over the whole
situation. Because he is in great shape physically
so this could go on for ten years. A scary thought.
He does do all the yardwork, so I should be thankful for that. Except the weeding. That's gotten out of hand lately because I didn't take over.
Well, sure enough, the alarm stopped chirping. Thanks for listening to me rant. It helps to have you all in my pocket!

Can you just organise to have the alarms replaced, and take your father to the dentist?
Sometimes there comes the point where you just have to, as you say, stop thinking of him as a responsible adult, and step in and make the decisions.
If he questions why the alarms are being replaced, you could tell him he organised it.

Morning all. Just a quick fly by. I am out at Latin this morning and have 5 new members starting. A couple more will strat in November.
I’m going to card making after lunch. At least I just have to turn up for that.
Next Monday I have Creative Writing and Monday Painters. Then Latin again on Friday.
At least it all gets me out of the house and active 😝

Good morning,
My friend loved her gifts. We had a great time visiting with friends. The food was good.
Annie You are in a tough position. Your parents are lucky to have you taking care of them. I like Machka's suggestion. My aunt did that with my grandmother and smoking. She would leave a butt in the ashtray and tell GM that she had just had one and couldn't have another yet. Unknowingly my GM was a nonsmoker the last three years of her life. I hope you are looking into help resources. As always, try to remember to take care of you.
I love all the crafty ladies. Painting, writing, flowers, gardening, etc. It is inspiring that so many of you are active in so many ways. Most days I feel like all I do is work and sleep. And only one of those takes up lots of hours.....
Anxiety is high today. 😕 Not sure why. Was "off kilter" on Tuesday as well. Oh that was not the thing to do when anxiety high.....I stepped on the scale! I haven't seen that number but once since April of 2017! I KNOW it is just water weight from eating out last night, but still a kick in the pants. It took me 3 years to get away from that number. Water is on the priority today. Inflammation may also be contributing. Butt to toes have been cramping badly. Took magnesium before bed, but think it interfered with hormone, between hot flashes and cramps it was a long night. Will take again this morning instead. So tennis ball, hot tub, and water today. Like several other ladies I need to figure out sleep ( I average 6 hrs a night) but today is water.
So 13th, ask for help with something challenging... I reckon I will ask DH to check on my water today. Scary thought, but he is actually good at that. That is the most challenging thing in my current programming.
It is Friday the 13th...may your day be positive and maybe a little exciting.
Thank you all for visiting and sharing here!
Love,
Kylia in Ohio where I too am grateful for both heat and AC.

Heather – Hope your trip continues to be all you hoped it would be. Stay safe. Love the pictures! That Osage orange tree is what I grew up calling a “bo-dark,” tree, actually spelled “bois d’arc.” Those fruits are lethal if you’re the target of a brother throwing them, but aren’t edible, unfortunately. The French name, which translates as “wooden bow” is because the wood of the tree was used for bows by the Native Americans in the area where I grew up in Texas. Funny that you’re in France, where they call it the Osage orange.
Allie – The only one who knows you’re not allergic to smoke is you. Tell them you are! Tell them secondhand smoke is detrimental to lupus. Whatever you need to do so Alfie isn’t standing on your head at midnight yelling at people. Sorry the family isn’t feeling well, and hope you didn’t catch a cold.
Lanette – Hope your back is doing better… When it’s not working right, the whole body gets engaged in trying to protect it from being in pain, it seems like. Do hope it’s feeling well enough to attend your Master Gardener class. My dear friend, I KNOW this pottery class is good for me at the social level, even though I dread it… and that class would be good for you, too. Stop dreading the thought and just go, woman! You can always get up and walk around, it’s not like high school… This is from a woman who has to convince herself every single Thursday that I need to go, but I always enjoy it once I'm there. How are our chickens doing?
Terri - And speaking of busy people who DO get out of the house... Love that arrangement, it's just absolutely beautiful.
Vicki – Much traveling grace coming your way and hope it’s a particularly wonderful trip. So pleased you’re taking time off – you work harder than most people I’ve ever known and certainly deserve the nine days off.
Barbara – Hope the Medford trip went well.
Joy – No experience with the Ninja cookers or fryers – but the stove we’ve had for a bit over a year now is an air fryer as well as a convection oven and conventional oven, and we are finding new ways to love the air fryer function all the time. We do have a Ninja blender that we’ve had for eight or nine years, and it has been great – Corey still uses it for making his salsas, etc., each summer, so it gets a workout every year.
Annie – I wish I had advice, I just don’t. Many, many hugs, though, and so much respect for the dilemma you live in constantly. How’s your mama doing?
More in a bit... need more coffee!
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR5 -
Real quick to Annie- Home smoke detectors have a "shelf life" of 10 years. If it is a smoke/CO detector, they only last 5-7 years. It is not about the battery, the actual components inside of them break down. So...Google that and show dad. Time to replace them! Check with your local fire dept. Many of them have smoke detectors that they give away for free! xoxoxo KJ4

Lisa Kylia KJ and Machka, thanks for your support. I am so thankful for all the ladies here!
My mom is slowly getting stronger, and better able to move herself around the bed and transfer to wheelchair and such. People keep asking me when she can come home, and I say when she can climb the stairs without help. It's true that I could bathe her and help her to the bathroom, but I can't replace a whole staff 24/7. My dirty little secret is that I'm not eager for her to come home because it would be hard for me to leave the house at all.
Yes I have to push the issue of replacing the smoke detectors. The challenge is finding someone who can climb the ladder and do it.

1.Write down three things you can look forward to this month. 1. Another month of sobriety 2. Cooler weather 3. Decorating for Halloween11. Avoid blaming yourself or others. Find a helpful way forward. This is hard for me.
2. Find something to be optimistic about (even if it’s a difficult time). I am optimistic about cooler weather.
3. Take a small step to a goal that really matters to you. I need to call my uncle.
4. Start the day with the most important thing on your to-do-list. Updating this list and My Fitness Pal.
5. Be a realistic optimist. See life as it is but focus on what’s good. I usually hope for the best but prepare for the worst. I think this counts!
6. Remind yourself that things can change for the better. No matter how bad you think it is, it can always get worse. So enjoy life no matter where you are, or what you are doing, or your circumstances.
7. Look for the good in people around you today. I can do this if I try. This was not difficult to do with visitors. Employees were a different matter!
8. Make some progress on a project or task you’ve been avoiding. I need to clean the cabinets out. I am planning to start today. Didn’t happen.
9. Share an important goal with someone you trust. did not do this.
10. Take time to reflect on what you have accomplished recently. I have accomplished coloring pages, making doctor appointments, calming my nerves by taking some actions I never tried before, and more.
12. Look out for positive news and reasons to be cheerful today. With everything going on around me and in me this will be hard, but I will pay attention to good news.
13. Ask for help to overcome an obstacle you are facing. The obstacles I have cannot be solved by me, but by family members.14. Do something constructive to improve a difficult situation
15. Thank yourself for achieving the things you often take for granted.
16. Put down your to-list and do something fun or uplifting.
17. Take a small step toward a positive change you want to see in society.
18. Set hopeful, but realistic goals for the days ahead.
19. Identify one of your positive qualities that will be helpful in the future.
20. Find joy in tackling a task you’ve put off for some time.
21. Let go of the expectations of others and focus on what matters to you.
22. Share a hopeful quote, picture, or video with a friend or colleague
23. Recognize that you have a choice of what to prioritize.
24. Write down three specific things that have gone well recently.
25. You can’t do everything! What are three priorities right now?
26. Find a new prospective on a problem you face.
27. Be kind to yourself today. Remember progress takes time.
28. Ask yourself ‘will this still matter a year from now?’
29. Plan a fun or exciting activity to look forward to.
30. Identify three things that give you hope for the future.
31. Set a goal that brings a sense of purpose for the coming month.

Morning, ladies.
We replaced our smoke alarms a couple of years ago and for some unknown reason, DH put the old ones in the back of a kitchen cupboard instead of taking them to our local dump for disposal. Went to bed last night and about an hour later we hear the alarm going off and it's one that says words also....very loudly....evacuate, evacuate. Took a few minutes to figure out where the sound was coming from. We knew there was no fire and finally found the unit in the kitchen cupboard. Took a bit to figure out how to turn the thing off then DH set it outside. We will take it on our next dump run. Took awhile to get back to sleep.
Costco has shipped my Ninja and says should be here by the end of the day but I doubt it as I checked and it's coming from Calgary. My DD has a Ninja air fryer and loves it. I bought a couple of non stick fry pans from Ninja a couple of years ago and love them. Very well built and used quite often. Nothing sticks and so far nothing flaking off from the non stick surface.
Nothing planned for the day. Windy, cool and overcast here. Enjoying my second cup of coffee as I read through the thread.

Good day. Lovely weather, but due to change tomorrow. We have got to grips with the metro, which is great for me, as I can't walk for ever. Crawled back to the hotel this pm from the metro station, while DH climbed the hill to the basilica. We both went up there by funicular this morning.
In the cathedral we caught an organ recital.
There is an astrological clock.
I put a wish about my book in the prayer pot in the basilica.
Came back down the funicular and celebrated with a drink.
Bought a picnic lunch and ate it under jacaranda trees in a square. It was heaven. Onion puff pastry tart, carrot salad, (fab), and custard flan.
Then we watched a Palestinian demo. Loads of riot police. In France they call it a 'Manifestation'.
Wandered about looking in shops until my legs surrendered. Left DH to carry on
All good.
Off out to eat in half an hour. We booked one we saw near the cathedral. Having trouble finding a traditional restaurant open tomorrow. They are either full, or shut for the weekend!

Hello, all, from a cool and rainy Arkansas River Valley morning,
Washer is whooshing, dryer is gently bumping with the wool dryer balls, which I did buy and am very happy with. For the same cost as a box of Bounce that lasts about a hundred loads, or 20 weeks, I bought dryer balls that should last for about a thousand loads, or about four years. Economical and better for the environment at the same time...
Last night, while we're just quietly sitting in the living room reading, a raccoon peered into the living room window through the screen--had it decided to, it could have ripped through it with one claw... Corey scrambled and got the pellet gun, walked around the house, and popped it in the butt from around 20 feet away - it fell off its perch with a grunt and a lot of growling. Didn't kill it - we try not to, we just want to teach them it's not a good place to visit. He popped it again from further away (in the dark!) as it was headed for the fence. He's a really good shot. That will hopefully keep the raccoon away from the house, but closed that window anyway!
Also moved Egg's dish in the living room this morning to try to discourage the stray that keeps coming in to eat her food. Unlike Debbie, we're just not up to dealing with strays at all and try to discourage them. One cat is plenty for us.
After the rain stops gently dripping outside, I'll probably go outside and do some weeding, but for now, I'll enjoy the remainder of the morning inside. Woke up with an idea of what I want to make with some polymer clay. Going to play with that for a while this morning. I've already gotten four more file boxes filled in the storage room, and more than a dozen plastic bins and boxes out in the car for the next trip into town. For whatever weird little reason, every one of them that I empty makes me happy. I'm terribly tired of plastic.
Later, y'all,
Love,
Lisa in cool, rainy, but still green for a few more weeks, Arkansas

What's fun for other people may not be fun for me and vice versa. I am aware of this all the time as I read about your adventures. There was a time in my life when I traveled a lot and took classes and learned new skills. Now I am content to stay home, watch TV, knit the same blanket pattern over and over, walk 15,000 steps a day in my neighborhood, ride my exercise bike, read, and attend spiritual meetings on Zoom. I need nothing more and I don't worry about the fact that other people are doing other things and recommending that I do the same. My life is exciting not boring.
Vicki, I hope your trip is wonderful. You have been working so hard, you need time to make your own choices for awhile.
Allie, Stand up for yourself. You are an obliger and a people pleaser and that usually serves you well but sometimes you have to say "This is garbage, and I won't put up with it.".

Terri: Great that you are so active and doing interesting things!
Kylia: I hope your anxiety lessens
Lisa: I hope the racoon learned its lesson.
Barbie: Good going on the 15,000 steps! That is pretty active! When COVID hit I realized I was mostly happy at home except that I get ancy for an outing out of town every few months. I am always trying to make new friends in GA and when Covid hit it was a break from trying to do this. I also had to care for my
husband. I don't watch a lot of tv but really appreciate the streaming over the cable package we had. Now I can watch interesting documentaries and movies right from my family room.
Rebecca: Glad your son only had a small amount of damage.
Heather: Sorry about the flight delay. I am enjoying the pictures you are posting.
Lanette: The mother is about 20 pounds. I don't know the breed. I have had PBS Masterpiece but have not watched Forgotten....maybe I will do this. I did watch quite a bit of SeaSide Hotel but not all of the seasons. I hope your back is improving.
RV Rita: I hope the plans for cataract surgery go smoothly!
Vicki: So nice DH's sister will be buried with her MOM.
Annie: Living with your Dad doesn't sound easy. You are doing a great job providing care. Maybe sorting the mail is becoming too difficult. Will your mother be safe on the stairs? We had a chair lift for my husband for a couple of years and then eventually moved him into the family room.
I stayed up until 11 last night and then got up at 2 and cleaned the kitchen and went back to bed. Today I feel like I stayed up all night. I will have to nap. The MD says my fatigue is probably from the CoVID that I had on Labor Day. My vitamin D is 24 and she says 40 to 60 is what she wants to see. However she has seen levels as low as 8 so is not overly concerned about 24.
Best,

We have a FB group for our area, where events are posted, things people need doing, or businesses promoting something. You asking for a handyman to replace the smoke detectors falls in that catagory. You just buy the new smoke detectors, batteries and the handyman and you agree on a price. Pay in cash not anything with a card. You say you are living with your parents correct? But in actuality, they are living with you, just in their own home. You are their daughter/caregiver and you make decisions. Gone are the days you could ask your father to do some task, or your mother to take her pills, and you weren't concerned if they'd done them. Its a sad reality but for their own safety, and your sanity, you need to adjust to life as it is, not as it was. So its a quality of life question. Do you want to eventually have them at a facility that can monitor everything and you know they'll be safe, but reasonably not happy not being in their own home? Or do you keep things as they are, more and more tasks falling to you, and you're not reasonably happy? These are things I know you must wrestle with, but only you will know the best decision. My father was at a dementia facility in Oregon for about 8 years. I empathize with you, as its a disease that removed bits of his memory, and was hard for family to see. Every so often his personality would come racing thru, calling me Bec, or mentioning my boys, then it would be gone.
Hugs my dear friend!💖🙏💪

In my rush to get out the door for my Eye doc appointment (which turns out I was a day late for) I forgot to update my daily appreciation. So today I appreciate calendars! I have re-schedule the appointment but went for the 20 minute ride to town alone, so no rushing. On the way back, got stuck in construction traffic where they are paving the highway. Added an extra 10 minutes to the drive. No rush and no anxiety as I was by myself. I actually chocked it up to a long morning drive.

Today is my husband's 65th birthday. This morning, we took a short ride to see the changing leaves and stopped at a local dairy to buy ice-cream for his birthday dinner. He just wants a pizza for dinner so there's not much for me to do for his birthday. It's the last day of nice weather for a while so he is heading outside now to work on the house. The longest side of our house is done!! Yay!! I'll try and mow the yard before the rain heads in and then it will be an inside kind of weekend.

In honor of Heather and husband in France! My husband bought me macarons made by bakers in St. Valery-en-Caux, in Normandy France.💖
