Love the photos of Levi and the Maple tree and the beautiful things Heather is seeing in France!
Annie ~ My heart goes out to you! You have been given a great responsibility caring for your parents. Prayers that you will be able to get the confidence and help you need to make decisions that will be in the best interest of you all.
Thursday, my college friend and I went to see our other friend who has moved to assisted living because her COPD is so bad she can no longer take care of herself. We ate at a favorite Mexican restaurant and I was happy that I chose a large salad that was delicious.
Going to grandson's ball game this afternoon. Happy to see my family.

Last night, while we're just quietly sitting in the living room reading, a raccoon peered into the living room window through the screen--had it decided to, it could have ripped through it with one claw... Corey scrambled and got the pellet gun, walked around the house, and popped it in the butt from around 20 feet away - it fell off its perch with a grunt and a lot of growling. Didn't kill it - we try not to, we just want to teach them it's not a good place to visit. He popped it again from further away (in the dark!) as it was headed for the fence. He's a really good shot. That will hopefully keep the raccoon away from the house, but closed that window anyway!
Later, y'all,
Love,

I need to start using dh's airsoft gun on these raccoons.
I am trying to find the vent covers for the ones around the house(outside, venting under the house)
The ones I am looking for have springs so what ever is under the house can get out but cant get back under. I saw them once, years ago and didn't order them, now can't find them.
raccoons We have A LOT of raccoons in the park. The powers that be changed all the trash cans (except the dumpsters) into animal-proof ones. The are difficult to open with arthritis in you hands, but they are better than the trash the coons would strew all over the park. These make my job much easier. My DH took an electric fence thing and a piece of old fencing we have and ‘electrified’ our outside trash can. This taught the raccoons to stay away from our stuff. They get zapped once and don’t come back! Of course my DH and I regularly get zapped by accidentally touching the fencing. It doesn’t hurt but sure does surprise you! Since this idea, no more raccoon feet on our car or finding our trash spread out all over the place.

1.Write down three things you can look forward to this month. 1. Another month of sobriety 2. Cooler weather 3. Decorating for Halloween12. Look out for positive news and reasons to be cheerful today. With everything going on around me and in me this will be hard, but I will pay attention to good news.
2. Find something to be optimistic about (even if it’s a difficult time). I am optimistic about cooler weather.
3. Take a small step to a goal that really matters to you. I need to call my uncle.
4. Start the day with the most important thing on your to-do-list. Updating this list and My Fitness Pal.
5. Be a realistic optimist. See life as it is but focus on what’s good. I usually hope for the best but prepare for the worst. I think this counts!
6. Remind yourself that things can change for the better. No matter how bad you think it is, it can always get worse. So enjoy life no matter where you are, or what you are doing, or your circumstances.
7. Look for the good in people around you today. I can do this if I try. This was not difficult to do with visitors. Employees were a different matter!
8. Make some progress on a project or task you’ve been avoiding. I need to clean the cabinets out. I am planning to start today. Didn’t happen.
9. Share an important goal with someone you trust. did not do this.
10. Take time to reflect on what you have accomplished recently. I have accomplished coloring pages, making doctor appointments, calming my nerves by taking some actions I never tried before, and more.
11. Avoid blaming yourself or others. Find a helpful way forward. This is hard for me.
13. Ask for help to overcome an obstacle you are facing. The obstacles I have cannot be solved by me, but by family members.
14. Do something constructive to improve a difficult situation. I will have to think on this.15. Thank yourself for achieving the things you often take for granted.
16. Put down your to-list and do something fun or uplifting.
17. Take a small step toward a positive change you want to see in society.
18. Set hopeful, but realistic goals for the days ahead.
19. Identify one of your positive qualities that will be helpful in the future.
20. Find joy in tackling a task you’ve put off for some time.
21. Let go of the expectations of others and focus on what matters to you.
22. Share a hopeful quote, picture, or video with a friend or colleague
23. Recognize that you have a choice of what to prioritize.
24. Write down three specific things that have gone well recently.
25. You can’t do everything! What are three priorities right now?
26. Find a new prospective on a problem you face.
27. Be kind to yourself today. Remember progress takes time.
28. Ask yourself ‘will this still matter a year from now?’
29. Plan a fun or exciting activity to look forward to.
30. Identify three things that give you hope for the future.
31. Set a goal that brings a sense of purpose for the coming month.

I must get moving! We have a HUGE group of people here from a college Astronomy department. There is a full eclipse going on here today and so many cool and weird telescopes and ways for them to watch it. I have some glasses to watch it and some to give out. Starts soon, so I must get moving! Should be fun. I hope to get pictures if I can and will post here if they work.

Rita - What fun - a full eclipse! I think I've seen one, as a child.
Lisa - so good to have all those loving people in your life.
We both had a terrible night's sleep. No reason. But our day went well, apart from my troubles with my thigh. I did end up walking around 3 miles, with lots of slow walking in the market and art gallery, but it was hard. I decided to get the metro back, and DH went off walking down the river. I had a delicious nap before he got back.
We first went to the railway station to check it out for tomorrow, and then to the posh Market. That was spectacular! After that we walked across the river to the Town Hall and big art gallery. Some decent impressionist paintings, but I had to sit down in each room.
When DH returned, we went out to buy our meal for tonight's picnic in our room. Ended up with a goat's cheese and leek tart, a salmon and spinach tart, and an apricot tart. We added a nice box of salad to that.
Then we retired to a great local bar for a drink.
Came back to the hotel for fun and games and right now DH is snoring. Looking forward to our dinner!
I will post this before it gets lost and do photos separately, as I lost my last post.

Heather-Thanks for taking us along on your trip.
I never know if I should post pics of my travels or not. I enjoy traveling, whether through others' photos and stories or otherwise.
Joy-Great story about your mister and the smoke detectors. My mister does things like that too. "Who knows when we might need a broken smoke detector in the future? We must keep it." That is frustrating.
I'm struggling with back pain lately. So much that I can't sleep. I'm functioning at the moment, but if I don't get some good sleep soon, I won't be. I have been sleeping in the guest room, but if it's not one thing, it's another. I tried leaving the windows open, but the stupid dog across the street barks ALL THE TIME. I think every movement of anything makes her bark. Leaf falls, she barks. Something in the leaves crackles, she barks. I don't know how her owners live with her. Maybe 3 nights in a hotel room alone will do wonders.
Woke up to fog so thick I couldn't see past the deck. Oddly, it's perfectly clear and sunny at the beach (6 miles/9.66 km away), where the mister went.
I'm enjoying the coolness while he's out until mid-afternoon. I love my alone days, few that I get.
Have a great day, wherever you are.

Heather - thank you for sharing the photos of your trip. Really enjoying them and hearing about the area. Glad the weather has been good so far. I keep staring at the display case "Le Chocolat". And the ones you posted a little bit ago. I want to teleport to that market. Those tarts sounded so yummy.
My back is still "bitey". Better than it was, but bending in a certain direction shoots a pain down my left hip. So no car rides today. I did rake up a few leaves yesterday, just piled them on a tarp and pulled them behind the shop.
Tina - sorry to hear about YOUR back and that neighbor's dog. When we are in pain, aggravations get magnified for sure.
Rosemarie - why does your brother think you need to have your mom living with you? So you can be her caregiver as she ages? So you both have company? He probably means well. I think you are within your rights to tell him you don't want to take on caregiving again. You are enjoying spending time with yourself, going places with friends, being able to get away and not be tied down. Hopefully he'd understand, and that's not being selfish at all. You went above and beyond these past few years caring for your husband. Sounds like your Mom has a great place right now.
Carol - sounds like you had a great lunch with your friend and nice to visit your friend in Assisted Living. So nice you can get away and meet up with friends from time to time. We're rooting for you grandson's team!
Lisa - I love hearing about Corey and Kelsey's Cruz being so supportive and interested in their gal's happiness.
Shake the Sugar - This morning I watched Dr. Matt's latest "Shake the Sugar" video he recorded last night. He looked disheveled, lol. He has six kids, all under the age of 10 or so from what I can tell and he does a lot of family things with them.
It's over an hour long, and I thought he gave a lot of good tips. Like moving/walking after each meal. And eating the protein part of my meal first, saving carbs like bread and fruit for the end to dampen the glucose spikes and insulin response. I like that he goes into the "why" and just doesn't say "do this" and jump to the next topic. For example, how sugar and insulin spikes stress our immune system and that's why it takes so long to recover from viruses and illnesses.
If anyone is interested, here's the link. Sounds like he rushed into his office to record it after a quick drive down the freeway. So he didn't have time to prepare like he wanted. He does look a lot more "put together" when I see him for appointments.
He also mentions a list of 43 Considerations when we are looking support sugar and insulin regulation, and that if we're able to just incorporate a dozen of them we'll start to see positive changes.
Here's the PDF ( hope this link works.)

Pictures from the eclipse. My phone didn’t work as I wanted but I did add a couple of those. In a spoiler b/c my iPad would not let me size them. They also launched two weather balloons at the beginning of the eclipse to gather data. As my grandson would say ‘Way Cool’!

Machka- thanks for finding that info for Annie...
Yes believe me I did whatever I could for both Toms parents, his aunts, uncles etc...as I did with both my parent's.. thats just me though..
I truly believe I was brought into Toms life to be there for his family.
And for that I think even though he was a jerk he will be eternally greatful for that at least.
Annie - please look into some of those agencies its always better with a helping hand..1 -
Happy Birthday (belated) Jake!
My hand is getting much better. Still a little bit itchy. But, boy, has the swelling gone down! Now I have no problem holding a pen or pencil
Tracey – see, taking care of PJ in his house presents a wee bit of a problem. We have no idea of what that city has except for the park we took him to, the movies, and the bowling alley. We know of the ceramics place we go to, but that isn’t a very kid friendly place (well, not a 5 year old). Guess we’ll just have to google places and most likely drive. The closest Chuck E. Cheese that I know of is about an hour away. That was so nice of you to invite that person who was going to be alone to your Thanksgiving. Well, with all the help you had, feeding 10 people probably wasn’t a big deal
pip – Lenny absolutely did give you Kirby (((HUGS)))
barbie – you add so much to my life, also. Many times you don’t say a whole lot. But what you do say is very profound
You know, another lady at BK asked for a donation for her children’s school. I don’t mind donating, as a matter of fact, I’d rather donate than buy the overpriced junk at fundraisers. Well, as far as I know, no one else that works in the morning has children.
A friend came here. She’d hurt her leg when a wheel barrel full of bricks when down her leg. We loaned her a shower chair, a thing that goes over the toilet to make it higher for you and a transport chair. She doesn’t need them any more so she brought them here.
Jess came here and is going back tonight. I guess she wanted to pick up the christmas tree we were giving her and the lights and tree topper we gave her.
Lector at the church then Vince wants us to go out to dinner with Jess. Looks like I won’t get my walk in today. I forgot to go to CVS after work so I’ll have to leave for church early so I can stop there. I could swear I made a tree skirt for Jess but she can’t find it. Guess I’ll have to make another one for her. But we did give her one we had because I don’t think I can get it made by Christmas this year
Rosemarie – I don’t find HIIT hard. I usually do 10 seconds of sprinting and then 20 of recovery. I think it’s supposed to be 10 to 10. But I do usually do it for 45 minutes to an hour. Yea for you getting those dogs. One thing, tho. You said you like to get out of town every 3 months or so. Do you have someone lined up who can take care of the dogs while you are gone?
Allie – can’t you state your concern about the smoking to the board? Our condo just now said that you can’t smoke on the balconies. This was in response to some people complaining that the smoke was going into their condo. Many times I’ve “made up” stories to have something done, like “I need it for medicinal purposes” when I want to bring my own food somewhere rather than eat their deep fried stuff. Poor Myles with the runny nose. YOU feel better
I share things here that I would never share with others. You all offer ideas but no judgment
Tracey _ I swear, the first time I ever heard of narcam (is that how it’s spelled?) was when I took the CPR course. I never knew there was something for a drug overdose. I felt so out-of-touch
Heather – you had to stow your handbag??? I’ve never had that happen to me. Not like I do as much traveling as you do.
Lights in bedroom: CPAP, time display on alarm and on both VCR’s.
Lanette – hope you’re feeling better soon. Back pain can be such a pain… I find ceramics to be so very calming. When the leaves change on maple trees, they are so beautiful
Annie – I bet if you explain your problem replacing the smoke detectors to the fire company, they would be able to help you one way or another. Update: so glad to hear your dad agreed to let you call an electrician
Heather – love your trip
Beth – happy birthday to your hubby
Rebecca – I see your are back to the food porn….even if you didn’t make it….lol Better watch out! Looks like Heather is competing with you for the title of “food porn queen”….lol
Lisa – so happy for Kelsey that she found Cruz

I was cleaning and I noticed on my quilt that I had made for me, there was the Amazon picnic t-shirt 2003, 20 years ago. That got me thinking about the picture that I had with some of us and Jeff Bezos (with hair). I was kneeling right beside him, fun times. Also found a cap with the old logo , before the smiley arrow. Still have the slinkie.

Tina - As you can see from the response, all of us love going along on people's travels. I'm doing no travel at the moment, nor contemplating it anytime soon, so it's a lot of fun to see other's trips. I'm sorry your back is giving you a lot of pain! It really does make sleeping tough, especially in noisy or other uncomfortable environments.
Heather - Rebecca has it right, I can smell the fresh bread, the cheeses and the rest. Lovely pictures, too, from Johnnie.
Lanette - Sorry your back is still out of whack too... it really is such a pain, as there seems to be no movement that we do that doesn't involve our backs in some way.
Michele - You'll find something to do with PJ, or you can also just stay home and have fun--kids don't have to be entertained every waking minute, they just need to be loved and safe! It will be time to finally spend lots of quality time with him and bond with him in ways you both enjoy.
We took a whole bunch of plastic bins and crates, a cheval mirror and an old folding card table and chairs that we never used off to the Goodwill, and I finally got both the closets that need to be demoed completely emptied. On top of that, I was finally able to get all the winter coats out of my side of my closet, and a bunch of things off of a bookcase in the exercise room that just didn't have anyplace else to live, like a couple air mattresses for when the kids are here. We'll move the shelf out to the shop and repurpose it there, more shelves are always needed there.
Everything that we're keeping is now nicely boxed where appropriate, and on shelves that roll. From our warehouse days, I have about a half dozen king-sized flat sheets, and I will be making a couple seams in those and making dust sheets. That should keep things in good shape while we're doing construction in that space. Should be less than a morning's work to make the dust covers, if I don't overcomplicate things.
And, to keep things fair, a picture of my beautiful Haley... I sure miss my grands. This was from her mother-daughter morning with her mama on Friday.
Love y'all,

Look at it from PJ's perspective. His parents are gone ... and he'd be in a new place if he went to your place. That could be quite traumatic.
Google can help, but there's also nothing wrong with playing with him at home.

Only slept for an hour last night. Heart racing. Lots of meditation and reading. Got up before the alarm.
All went well from then on until this delay taking off.
They asked for one volunteer to give up a seat. Offered another flight, hotel, and £500. They got one! Another young chap was disappointed.
I'm separated from my handbag at the moment because I had to stow it. Will get it back later, but I hate that.
Not good at waiting 😕 😞.

Stow in the overhead bins?
I fly with a backpack (which goes into the overhead bins) and a very small handbag with the essentials, which goes under the seat in front of me during take off and landing.

I have had an interesting day. Got a message late yesterday that my favourite cousin Jamie, and his wife Helen were in our town today, and would I like to meet up. He lives in Nottingham, England, and was home to visit with his younger brother, Eddie, who was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. Needless to say, we met up with them in town, and spent hours catching up with them. His wife is from Donegal, so they had been over there for about a week between visits to his brother. Eddie isn’t up to many visitors, but I will try and go visit him some time in the next few weeks.
Then tonight I couldn’t find my pocketbook, which had my phone and cards in it. Panic stations, as we searched the house for it to no avail, and assumed I had left it behind at the cafe. It was over an hour until remembered I had ‘Find my Phone’ on my iPad, and switched it on to find that it had been at the restaurant until about the time we left, and miracle of miracles, it appeared to be at home. So we re-searched the house, and eventually found it under 2 coats on the banister in our back hall. Such a relief. Panic over!
Lisa: The bowls are lovely. I had a few like that myself when I started using the wheel. (Ceramics was my specialty in college)
Annie: I know how frustrating it can be when dealing with our elders. Its so difficult to become the parent figure. It’s a long furrow we have to plough. Dementia is a thief who slowly steals our nearest and dearest away from us.
Heather: Loving all the pics. Bringing back fond memories of holidays in France.
Loving the kiddie pics, too. It’s amazing how quickly they are growing.
Ah well! Time to climb the wooden hill.

2023 Optimistic October1. Write down three things you can look forward to this month.
Daylight Savings Time!! - which occurred early in the morning of October 1.
Spring's developments
Thanksgiving
2. Find something to be optimistic about (even if it’s a difficult time)
There's lots to be optimistic about!
Daylight in evenings so we can start exercising outdoors after work.
Work going well. Finished that instruction manual and got myself in a good position to make improvements to the project I'm working on.
Reading books. Colouring. Doing sudokus.
Getting stuff done on my home computer.
The garden!
My family.
3. Take a small step to a goal that really matters to you.
Taking steps toward the "organise the house" project.
4. Start the day with the most important thing on your to-do-list.
I've actually done quite a few things already today.
5. Be a realistic optimist. See life as it is but focus on what’s good.
I'm definitely not a pure optimist. Too much has happened, especially in the last 5 years, for me to call myself an optimist, but there are a lot of good things going on too.
6. Remind yourself that things can change for the better.
I know!!

The red lumps and bumps on my cheekbones seem to be easing a bit. That's a step in the right direction.
I hope the worst bit down the right side of my neck would start improving.
It's so itchy and sore at the same time, but I know that scratching would be a very bad idea.

Rebecca – love your Scrabble board
Lisa – how old is Haley? She’s beautiful, well, all the kids are
Terri – thank goodness you found your pocketbook! I know that I would really really be upset if mine ever got lost!
At BK they were going to throw away these lids for some sort of plate (plastic). I told them I’d take them to the soup kitchen. If they can’t use them, they can throw them out just as well as BK can.
Went to dinner, had salmon. Jess just left.
Don’t know why, I have a bad case of the munchies right now. Totally forgot to give Jess the coleslaw I made for her and the apple crisp. Oh well……

raccoons We have A LOT of raccoons in the park.

I SO wanted to do the electric fence around my nectarine tree in the front but dh told me I couldn't- Not to keep the four legged critters out but to keep the two legged thieves from taking all my nectarines. Two of the three years it produced, someone stole all of them over night. This year we didn't get any because of peach leaf curl-not one fruit this year
I walked MIL's dog this morning. Was a bit misty when we left our house but was pretty warm by the time I was done- was really wishing I hadn't worn my soft fleece hoodie.
Did some shopping, of course.
Got some great deals at Grocery Outlet. Boneless skinless chicken breasts for .99 a pound- bought three packs- one pack already cooked and ready for the cats(3 for the cats, 2 for us. All are chopped up.One has Korean BBQ sauce like pulled pork and the other is chopped to go in quesidilla w/ some canned green chilis and cheese for dinner tonight
Got some packages of dry soup mix- add water and simmer 5 min. Dh tried the tomato dill and I had the potato broccoli. I did add a diced baked potato to mine. They were good and super filling. 4/$1!! Also got a mushroom and a mixed veggie. These will be great add ons this winter for lunches and also for dh when he wants something to eat in the evening, after dinner, for a late night snack. I just need to figure out how to do them in the microwave so he can make his own when he wants them
Neighbors across the street are having a party- Filipino Karaoke- A few of the ladies are pretty good, one really good, but, one of the guys, I think he is our neighbor/home owner, he is trying
All the old tunes- The Carpenters, Frank Sinatra, etc
