Story about ghouls/silver/and garlic…. Right during and after the divorce to my abusive DH, my YDD started complaining about nightmares. Well we often watched or read stories about ghoulish monsters, so I explained to her that garlic ‘worked’ to keep vampires/werewolves/witches, and other monsters away from the house. So for about a year, my house smelled of garlic. I “had” to put garlic on EVERY windowsill, not only hers to get rid of her nightmares! Once I did that, her no more complaints about nightmares. LOL she felt safer with the garlic. Her bad dreams were always of monsters.
So in this Halloween time.. if any of you are having nightmares or afraid monsters will get into your house, I have proven that garlic works! 🤪👽🛸👾😈😹👻

FYI,,,garlic to fend out ghouls is a REAL thing! LOL see the article in the spoiler4

Hello ladies!
Thank you for your kind thoughts and support. It really helps a lot.
Meanwhile I am waiting for the electrician and researching smoke detectors. The newest ones have ten year batteries, a wifi connection, and a voice alarm that warns about the siren. And I could turn the siren off from my phone. Of course the new ones are pricey, and we need nine of them. Hmm. We shall see what the electrician says. Today is the estimate, and maybe some work.
I hope they are done in time to let us go visit Mom.

That photo of husband was back when we lived on the Oregon coast. He was growing out his hair and his mustache! Now he's clean shaven and I shave his head with a #3. This morning he took all his button down, collared long sleeved shirts and washed them. He's been just wearing tees with sweaters, and his heavy rugby shirts most of the time. So I said, well you should just wear your suspenders as well, (jokingly said) but he said, "ooh I have to find them"! Oh heaven help me.😁. He should very entertaining though.💖🤗

DH's daughter came to pick us up today . I thought it was tomorrow, but I suspect DH was not clear enough. Anyway, it all worked out perfectly. We are also being taken out for lunch by her for his birthday tomorrow. I'm going to try to book the fish restaurant near here.
We drove to her house in the village. It is much bigger than I imagined, but cluttered, dirty with pets, and smelly. Could be fabulous, but it made me shudder. Two dogs and five cats. I couldn't even sit down!!! So much hair and yuck. We walked around the village, met lots of neighbours, and saw a house and barn/garage below she has recently bought for £37,000 where she hopes to keep her classic cars. Her ex husband and best friend is planning to retire there and do up the accommodation above. I'm sure it's a ruin, but a good space.
Then we drove to a lovely, typical French café for lunch. Great lunch, but we had smoke blown all over us from a nearby guy. This is the biggest disadvantage of France. In Brighton and Hove almost no one smokes. We almost stopped coming to France because of this problem.
After that we drove around the beautiful countryside to an olive oil factory. We can only take back liquids in less than 100ml, so had to choose a couple of mini things, but we have green olives for tonight.
Then we drove along tha canal to a winery and tasted a few. She bought her dad a couple of bottles for us to have in our oom for aperitif and to go with tonight's picnic.
Came back and immediately went out to buy picnic. Lovely cured meats, Cantal cheese, carrotte rapée, celeri remoulade, bread. M&Ms. We bought a cheap corkscrew for the wine, paper plates and bamboo cutlery. It was all cheaper than half a meal out.
So, now relaxing and about to open the amazing white wine she bought us.

Ok, he found them.
Now he says when we go down south to see the kids, we should go to the mall there, and look at sport coats, or "waistcoat" sweater vests. He's excited, and its nice to see.
Heather, its hard to acclimate in environments you're not keen to, but you did great. My middle sons home has dog hair one side to the other, so husband and I don't stay there if its both of us. My son used to be hurt by this a little, as when its just me visiting, I do stay there. He just tells people, "my Dad doesn't like my dogs" which I kind of feel bad about that. Smokers in a restaurant would affect me greatly. My middle smokes and takes long drags when she's video chatting with me. I never say anything but to me if she didn't smoke she would not have the wheezing that she has when she talks. Pick and choose my battles is what I repeat in my brain.
Love all the photos, and you taking the time to vicariously take us along in your back pocket.💖👍🏼

Kim - so glad your questionable ouchie turned out to be a thorn. Good to have that worry out of the way.
Lisa - your talk of foccacia has inspired me to make a pizza tomorrow. For years, that was the Saturday night favorite at our house and I loved making the dough and that yeasty smell stuff. I had to buy new flour - the bag I had in the cupboard expired a year ago. That's how long it's been since I baked anything. I'll stick the new bag in the freezer once I scoop out what I need right now.
Carol - the nearest Lowe's is about 30 miles from my house. If I'm set on getting plastic roofing panels, I'll see if any of the local hardwares carry them. And I have other options - Charlie's wife volunteered to pick some up for me and bring them out. In that case, I need to sit down and figure how many I'll need so I don't have her wasting trips running for one panel at a time. I have my heavy duty snips and can cut them to size. I'm anxious to see how my jerry-rigged plastic panel works and just be content with that.
Have your DH's sleeping habits changed a lot recently? Just thinking maybe he's not sleeping well at night for some reason so is catching up with the long naps. Hopefully it's a temporary thing.
Beth - I was glad to hear the end is in sight on the house siding project before the weather turns. And I remember what you went through to get your mom closer. Glad it worked out.
Heather - I just read your latest update on DH's daughter's place. Interesting - a big change from your cozy well-organized house for sure. Sorry about all the smoke -I wonder if lung cancer and COPD rates are super high there. Happy Birthday to him, by the way.

Feeling sorry for myself. What do you do when your husband wants to sleep most of the day and then is up most of the night? I am beginning to feel like a widow. Can't plan to do anything together after lunch because he has to have his nap and it usually last 3 to 6 hrs.
Carol in GA
I feel that way about dh most of the time- mine isn't napping, well, sometimes he is, but is always in his room with the door closed(closed to keep the cats out so he can be on his laptop or working on a project without the cats in the middle of it)
He does nap in the afternoon if he gets a chance then goes to his mom's at 4:30(plus at 9:30AM and stays an hour and a half or longer each time). He has been eating over there, says she gets mad if he doesn't eat something- isn't hungry for dinner at home but then after I go to bed, he is up in the kitchen snacking on something, other than what I cook and stays up well past midnight.
Only time we spend any time together is to go shopping- that man LOVES to shop- shops pretty much every day. Mostly for his mom's stuff now but just to go shopping too.

Kylia - I understand now why SIL is the way she is. That was always the expectation and it doesn’t sound like she really wanted/wants to do more.
It sounds like a productive day. I need to go through cords and such again.
Lovely photos of your family.
Lanette - Im going to try to sell this at a craft fair here too. I think it will be a hit.
I haven’t tried to get wood cut here at Home Depot for quite some time, but I know they used to. It does say they still will on Google, but it specifies some stores.
My cousin’s son had a dislocated hip, dislocated arm in two places and broken in one. They put him to sleep to reset the hip and did another X-ray to find he has a broken pelvis. His wife and their children are ok. His wife has some bruises, his eldest daughter has seatbelt burns. Their friend and her son were also released.
They were on a side by side in unfamiliar territory and went over a ravine. Thankfully, someone driving on the main road saw lights and knew they were heading in the wrong direction and stopped. They were able to call for help immediately.
He is now in an Edmonton hospital and will have surgery today or tomorrow.
Carol - I have had the same problem with a husband that doesn’t want to do anything. I finally decided that I would just do on my own. I am a people person and can’t handle being alone all the time. As a matter of fact I’m upset about that myself right now too. DH has been off since last Thursday and has done nothing but stay in the bedroom and watch tv and play on his phone. Meanwhile I sit in the living room alone. It’s frustrating.
Lisa - I try to do my sheets every couple of weeks, my bath mat I don’t think about too often but will now! I just washed all of my curtains a few weeks ago when I did a deep clean. My downfall is scrubbing the floors. I hate my mop and really need to buy something new. I’m thinking of just a swiffer wet jet. It’s better than the nothing I do now.
I used to worry about having a schedule like my Grandmother.
Laundry - Monday
Iron - Tuesday
Dust - Wednesday
Vacuum - Thursday
I forget what Friday and Saturday were, baking one day I’m sure.
I gave up on trying to keep that schedule years ago because I worked. Then I tried to do all cleaning on Saturday and laundry Sunday.
Now I just do things as I feel like it.
Kim - Isn’t there an old saying when someone is grumpy, “do you have a thorn in your side”? It is kind of funny they panicked about cancer, but also good they took notice.
Heather - I don’t like going to peoples houses with a lot of pets, but when the person is important to me I suck it up.
Started a new session for school today, Autism Spectrum Disorder. Interesting really.
After class I tried the two walk ins in town to see a doctor. I have a bad case of vertigo. There were no doctors available. I truly don’t think this is an emergency situation so don’t want to waste their valuable resources, but I’m not sure where to go or what to do.
I could drive into Edmonton, but don’t think I would have much luck there either.
My own doctor can’t see me, I tried that too.
I took my dishwasher apart to see why it’s not draining properly, I don’t know if I fixed it or not, will have to see when it runs through again.

The smoking in France is only outside on the terrace, it is banned indoors. But it's so lovely to eat outside under an umbrella or canopy. I don't like music with meals, so inside often didn't work for me, and DH hates smoke, so it was a real problem unless we knew the restaurant.
The other thing we hate is that they allow dogs in restaurants. Last night the couple beside us had two dogs. Well behaved, thank goodness.
Our dinner in the room turned out wonderfully. All delicious, especially the bread. We bought it from a proper boulangerie, but the rest just came from a mini supermarket.
I've booked the restaurant for the birthday lunch. I used to really hate talking in French on the phone, but I'm better at it now. DH's daughter hates the phone- she is on the spectrum - so I offered.
We will probably go with her to the market in the morning. Pick up another picnic delicacy for the evening meal. There is a minibar fridge in our room.
Our cathedral opposite our window was lit up tonight.
Love you all, Heather UK xxxxxx8 -
MFP Weekly Check-in for October 16, 2023
Kylia in Ohio – what a roller coaster ride scale wise this past week! I was 128.5 last Sunday. On Monday I was 127.5. On Wednesday, that dang scale read 130.3!!!! It was a job to get my mind to accept that that number was not true. It just wasn't possible. I have however only seen that number once since falling out of the 130s in 2017. More water. More logging. I am happy to say I weighed in at 128.2. So a loss of .3 lbs
Rita in Roswell NM - Well only down 2/10 a pound from last week, and still about 1 pound over the end of last month. Junk food needs to go away!
Debbie in Napa Valley CA - Will report next week.
Lanette SW WA State – weight staying steady. Goal is clothing fitting better, and making progress overall. Health, at this stage, is priority over what the scale says. Incorporating drinking more water, getting more activity right after meals and pushing carbs to the end of the meal, starting with protein and high fiber foods.

Went to church yesterday then came home and changed. DD and I then cleaned the gutters on the back of the house. We finished just as it started to rain.
We changed the horses places as we are now feeding the old mare timothy hay pellets. They are soaked so she does not have to chew them. Hopefully this will keep her going through the winter.
Kim - hope you are able to carve out some me time.
Carol - I am with the others. See if you can find something just for you while he is sleeping.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA4 -
Carol, does your new car have Car Play? My cousin’s 2019 CRV had it, but my 2016 had built-in. If so, your phones map app will work through car play and it is actually better than built-in navigation. You can even ask Siri for directions while driving. I couldn’t do that with my built-in navigation. I had to be stopped in Park.
Re b]bathroom rugs[/b]: our housecleaner comes every other Tuesday afternoon. Tuesday morning we wash all the bathroom and kitchen mats so they are nice and clean and ready to put down after she does the floors. We also do the sheets every two weeks. We do a load of regular laundry every day. Towels get done with the Monday and Friday loads, because those are Dave’s clothes and he doesn’t care. I sort mine and do darks one day, lights the next so that each gets done once a week.
I don’t have a set schedule for the places the housecleaner doesn’t do, but just do them when they start to bother me. For example, I did the oven Saturday. It probably hadn’t been done in 6 months or longer.

Kim - so pleased that it was merely that "thorn in your side..." and not cancer. I think it's become such a kneejerk reaction on the part of the doctors, it's a little scary. I have not had a doctor actually touch me in years, other than them clutching their stethoscope outside my shirt and pressing it to my chest, then telling me to take a deep breath. Techs, sure... mammograms, cardiograms, echocardiograms... but the docs just look at the test results and talk to me.
Sue - how are your sarcoidosis symptoms doing? Better, I hope. I think of you often. I'm so pleased that you're making sure to give your old mare the best chance to make it through the winter.
Heather - Many happy birthday wishes for Johnnie, and hope your birthday lunch out is absolutely wonderful. The delicacies for picnics in your room sound lovely and wonderful. Glad the holiday row is completed already... such a relief to have that over with!
Rebecca - Such an amazing change in Lee, just absolutely wonderful. You had to be so scared all the time at that point. So pleased the transplant was so successful.
Lanette - I'm so pleased I've inspired you to make homemade pizza. The best thing I've learned here with all these lovely women is that I do best if I eat whatever I choose and control my serving sizes. It's simply much more effective for me than leaving out any type of food, like fats or carbs or whatever the latest style is... I do try to leave my early meal as late as I can handle it, but eating smaller amounts and less often has been the most effective thing for me for weight maintenance and control.
Time to go pull the focaccia out of the oven, the house smells wonderful.
Hope it's a lovely start to the week for everyone.
Love,
Lisa in AR

Stat for the day-
Partial walk w/family- 1hr 57min 26sec, 93elev, 97ahr, 121mhr, 3.02ap, 6mi= 601c
Strava app = 735c
Walked 5 mi w/me and just the kids. The plan was kirby was going to run 2 mi, then he would take over and I would run 2 miles. Unfortunately, kirby couldn’t do his 2mi so he went back to the trailer and I just met him back there. He called me and said he had an accident. Luckily he had a diaper on and it held everything in until he got back to the trailer. Central cord syndrome and its issues are forever going to be part of his life. I feel so bad for him.10 -
Any help with posting pictures from Samsung? I can post from laptop, just not phone or tablet. Just a wee bit frustrating.
Not being able to post photos is a special feature that the Samsung & MFP app offers!!
Try opening the internet version of MFP rather than the app, and posting photos there.

I have one little rag mat in front of the sink and the type of mat that is like a thick towel (like you find in hotels) in front of the shower.
They both get tossed into the wash each time I do towels.
I've read that people's phones are the worst ... so I clean mine every couple days.

Benadryl knocked me right out last night!! But between it, the stronger cream, and time, the rash finally seems to be settling a little. Thank goodness!!
But now I know that I need to be really cautious around essential oils ... and extra cautious around home made soaps and things!!
Sometimes subsequent exposures can result in even worse reactions.

Kim-I have never gotten a rose thorn that embedded, but just getting stuck really bothers me. It is amazing they did touch it to try to determine something-good thinking on your part!
Kylia-I think you handle your role in family business how you chose. It would be difficult marrying in to such a thing after other roles are already established.
Rebecca-Lee looks pretty spiffy with his suspenders. I think it's great he is taking an interest in himself.
Heather-sounds like you had a lovely visit with DIL. Her housekeeping may not meet your standards, but just focus on the visit.
Tracey-cousin's son sounds really banged up-glad others are ok. I had to look up what a side by side is! Good luck in dealing with the vertigo.
Machka-glad rash shows some improvements.
Felt much better today from shot. Took some ibuprofen in morning. After lunch got a bit achy, took some more. Think it faded away around completely at about the 48 hour mark. Just passing on my experience for any of you who may get shot. Of course, we all respond differently.
Off to get ready for bed.

Carol, I had the opposite problem with my husband. He was never ready to do anything before 2 or3 in the afternoon. Well it is hot in the afternoon! And for years Middle GA closed down after 5 pm. This has improved. Can you be more intentional about what you do together in the morning? And then some places have adult classes in the afternoons that are interesting. Emory has an Ollie program I know. It is not social but the streaming on tv has really improved tv. I think it is great that you have energy for afternoon activities! I am usually out of energy by 1 and am ready to read!
Best,

It was a rough time back then. Really no different than living with an alcoholic. Each day presented itself differently and there was no security in how he was doing. I think the hardest thing was he would be fine one day, driving, watching tv, then the next day he would be in an ammonia coma not able to comprehend anything. It kept me on edge the entire time. So now I appreciate each and every day with the man.💖👍🏼

These are all great ideas along with my favorite ways to spend time alone
Reading
Watching TV while exercising (I have blue tooth headphones so I can watch without bothering a sleeping husband)
Taking a walk while listening to a podcast or audio book
Knitting
I've lived alone for some significant parts of my life and the best gift I gave myself was learning to be my own best friend.
