Annie - Will be thinking about you today, I hope the homecoming is easy and that you can settle into a routine quickly with your mom.
Machka - Thank you for helping me feel not-quite-so-weird about being weird about my hands getting dirty. I struggle with handling raw meat, too, and the smell of it compounds the dislike. I always feel so persnickety when I wear nitrile gloves to do things like making hamburgers, but I wear them anyway.
Welcome to those new to the thread, we're glad you're here!
Home renovation adventures--kinda boring:When the roofer came yesterday, he said that Corey had pitched the roof joists for the sunroom at too shallow an angle, and he would need to change the joists to fit the minimum pitch and rattled on about birdsmouth cuts and various other things, all of which I parroted to Corey when I talked to him at lunch. The point was that the guy wouldn't give us a bid or guarantee the work unless we made the changes he wanted. He wanted the joists to rise three inches at the top end for every foot of length in the joist. So for a 12-foot joist, the end of the roof joist furthest from the house would need to be 36 inches lower than the end where the joist fastens to the house. Corey built it to rise one inch for every foot of length, so the top end is only one foot higher than the bottom.
After a discussion at lunch, Corey's boss (whose name is Cory, which can get quite confusing) got hold of a roofer who works for him putting up new developments. They don't have an issue with the pitch, and can probably get a crew here next week and get it done in a couple of hours. My Corey's willing to pay for it so he doesn't have to do it. I was already fine with the money side of things because it meant my husband wouldn't be crawling around ten feet off the ground for hours on end. So, he will make the phone call early on Monday morning, because he has to be at the courthouse at 9 am for jury duty again.
I understood what the first roofer was saying because I listened when Corey made the decisions he made about the pitch of the roof, and agreed with the shallow pitch. Like me, Corey doesn't do anything without a really good reason. The steeper pitch the first roofer wants would mean that my six-foot-tall husband is banging his head every time he stands up in that room. Heck, I would be bumping my head in some parts of it with that pitch.
However, I've learned when men like the first roofer are in full-blown "let's teach this little woman why things have to be the way I want them," to just let them rattle. I don't even mind it, it's easy to nod and smile a slightly confused smile, and then go do what needs doing. I love getting older. Experience has taught me which battles are worth fighting. Please note--if we lived in snow country, the change request would be valid. But we get snow once or twice a year at most, and it seldom stays for more than a day or two. Ice dams and other issues with snow just aren't a problem here.
Didn't mean to write a book!
Barbie - I loved your list of all the Christmas-oriented things you've done and that you just no longer need to do them. My experience has been pretty much the same. I've wrapped entire full-grown trees in my yard with lights in years past, and the overall memory is just watching my electric bill skyrocket before I took them down again. I don't even own a light string anymore, and I'm happier without all the decor. I appreciate the others who go all out, and happily go driving in early December to see others' decorations. I just don't need to do them myself anymore.
Rebecca, Allie, hope y'all are feeling better.
Kylia - Your bears have more personality than some people I've met!
Later, y'all,

We had a load of topsoil delivered and today we put down grass seed and straw. Soup kitchen today.
Pip – how I wish you lived closer so that I can give you some of our camping stuff
Allie – good savings
Tracey – as far as taking a casserole and not going in the house, I think Ken would have a very hard time with that. As it is, he gets on Lynette’s case because she’s not a good housekeeper and so they don’t have company. So if I were to give him something and not go in the house, I think he’d get on Lynette’s case again. Guess I’ll just do nothing. Your story of your tongue on the railing reminded me of the scene from the movie “Christmas Story” where the kid gets his tongue stuck to a pole.
Question: does anyone brine their turkey? If so, do you put it in the refrigerator to brine? Or somewhere else---where?
Lanette – we’re going to Jess’ and having dinner on Friday, too. Travel on the day before thanksgiving is a nightmare! We’ll come home the Sat. BK asked me to work on sunday. I usually don’t work Sunday but since I’d been away, I decided to be a nice guy and ask them if they’d like me to work
Had to pick up a Mary Kay order for Jess yesterday then went to the MD for a “you’re alive” visit. All’s fine. Then spread topsoil
Jerry smelled again today. I have this deodorant that I’m not crazy about. I’ll tell him that I was going to donate it, but thought he might like it.
They’re having a Christmas party at the ceramics studio on the 9th, so I’ll get a gift at Sam’s. It’ll be free since we have Sam’s cash (or whatever it’s called). Then on that Monday we have a bowling party. I’m thinking that for both I’ll make a chicken bacon ranch casserole
Rita – I don’t like getting more than one shot at a time in case I have a reaction. This way I know to which shot I had the reaction.
Will make a pumpkin pie, a kafli (casserole – pasta), sweet potato casserole, and a chocolate dessert that Jess would like
Allie – feel better fast. Thanks for the day brightener
Lisa – lovely pottery
Went to Kohl’s tonight and got stocking stuffers for Jess and Colby. Went mainly because I had $5 Kohl’s cash, a coupon for $5, plus another coupon for another 30% off. So in the end, my $30 purchase was only $5.
Debbie – we had a Sears grill, was having problems with it and since the Sears near us is gone, after 15 years we got a new one.
Need to take a shower and then get to bed.

One of the greatest lessons I learned on this thread was to compete with myself and not with others. Your accomplishments each day will inspire you to continue and that's what is important. I am thrilled every day that I eat below my goals. It will sustain me and improve my life.

R is getting next week off to recover from pneumonia. He is in poor health anyway. Dr told him yesterday if he didn't get better in the next week he would get hospitalized again. He has missed 5 weeks this year in addition to a week vacation. He has been with us about 2 years. So I presented him with the option of taking off until next Friday and giving up his Christmas bonus in exchange for getting the paycheck. He accepted.

Tough work environment!
It can be! As a small business though it is hard to pay when they aren't working. A lot of hourly pay positions come with very few benefits. If a person is lucky, it might come with a paid vacation. This is especially true in the service industry. After 25 years and salary I do get a little more leniency, but I average around 300 extra hours a year in spite of vacation time. PS......at 60 yo he has made lots of poor life choices and continues to live above his means. He is a very caring person, but often times to his detriment. I was trying to find a way to help him recover and not get deeper in debt.
It sounds like you had a GRAND time on the ride. I am so happy that your DH is improved enough to join you.
Kylia
It takes a certain personality to work in the service industry.
I've done it here and there throughout my working years, and it can be OK in the short-term. But it's not my thing long-term.
Even having to be there at a precise time, until a precise time, grates on me.
However, apparently there are people who aren't keen on staring at a database all day long!!
Thank goodness we're all different.

Machka, Your bike riding adventure sounds wonderful. I, too, would get up extra early to get to something that brought me that much joy.

We had a long talk about what to do about Thanksgiving. I would treat the day like just another Thursday, but Jake likes to do something food related to mark the occasion. A local restaurant has take out Thanksgiving meals for about thirty dollars per person with all the trimmings but what we really like is turkey and mashed potatoes. So, we finally decided to order a small turkey and Bob Evans mashed potatoes to be put on our grocery pickup order for Sunday, We'll roast the turkey and serve it with mashed potatoes and gravy and finish the meal with some Ben & Jerry's ice cream that we added to the order. We ordered bread so we can have sandwiches for a few days with the rest of the turkey. No need to drive anywhere, or dress up, or make conversation with other people.

Decided I would paint the cards for our anniversary and my brother's wife. I've ordered flowers for her present. I did paint something for John, which is not brilliant , but it will have to do. I went with an idea I saw on the Internet and my execution was a bit below par.
However, I was quite pleased with this improvisation I did for DSIL. She is a redhead, and loves autumnal colours.
DH is still painting one of his geometric designs.
I'm off for a nap.

Annie ... I'm behind on reading but wanted to throw this out there to you in regards to your parents. You've mentioned that your Dad is a regular church attender. Does he think highly of the minister or someone else there? You might consider asking someone he respects to have a gentle conversation with him about driving or any of the other issues you've mentioned. I can guarantee you that someone has more than likely noticed his decline. And please pursue the advice that the home care nurse will give you next week. If she suggests in-home care, take it, even if it's just for a few hours each week. You will hate it at first but you need it for your sanity. You cannot be the only care-giver! Hugs!

[/b]Rebecca[/b] I hope you are feeling better today.
Deoderant/antiperspirants- My DH was told by a friend that they were bad for you. Needless to say, he took that to heart. I won't leave home without it as I stress too much and then sweat and smell-YUCK! DH said he doesn't wear it because it balls up his underarm hair. He showers every morning so that helps, but.......when I roll over to cuddle and get pit odor, I am done. So I picked him up some aluminum free deodorant last night and requested that he wear it. We will see. I refused to ride in his friend's car because it always smells.
Better get out of hot tub and walking. KY grands will be here after work. Oh! Oldest DGS (the athletic one) just got accepted at Northern Kentucky University for his Junior and Senior year of high school! He will recieve both HS and college credits. 3k a year! When he graduates HS he will already be a Junior in college! I am proud of him!!!! His sister will also apply next year, but she is college bound driven. He is not.
Annie We are in your pocket! Hugs!

I am thank you! It usually only affects me for a couple days, and I kind of walk around really careful, sleep in a position that doesn't promote any swirls, then it gets better. This morning I laid on my swirl side and though there were some slow shuffles of my vision, not anything that I had earlier in the week. I didn't sleep though, and was up at 5:20 am. Husband was surprised!

Well so far so good. We got the bed rail thing under the mattress. I had to remind Dad to pick up his tools from the floor, of course. Now they are on the dining room table, which is unsightly but not a trip hazard. I ran the dishwasher and got a load of laundry in. And I did my Spanish early. And a little meditation.
Thirty minutes until lunch, then we are off. I still need to move stuff out of my car. So we are in good shape, I think. I rather expect her to sit in her spot on the couch all day, unless she can't sit up that long. We will need to rebuild her nest of pillows and blankets.
I'm sure there are things we have forgotten, but I hope nothing dangerous. And no matter what I do, she will push her limits so she won't be 100% safe. There is no such thing. So I do my best and then deal with whatever happens. That's the self lecture running in my head.

Saturday’s gratitude: Joe is relieved to be “off the hook” for participating in any Thanksgiving celebration so T and I can go and enjoy ourselves guilt-free.
Friday’s gratitude: found a restaurant in Gold Beach serving Thanksgiving and even offering fish or vegan options for T. T excited to go with. We’ll have fun! And maybe a stroll after if the weather’s fair.
Lisa your story for GS’ afghan squeezed my heart. Can he see Orion when he is at either parent’s? Found the roof pitch story interesting not boring. Like understanding the reasons behind the choices. Congratulations Sarah Bernhardt
Lanette thanks! Was going to go by NextDoor, but asking at church or line dance is a better idea As are your curses about the stove. At this point my main goal is to have the RIGHT part here when the tech comes on Dec 6. At least it’s not scheduled for the day of infamy. Joe amazingly offered to light Aunt Elsie’s stove for me but I declined. It was so hard to light when the oven repairman was here I’m afraid of it, regret all we went through to move it, convert it to propane and get it hooked up. Big mistake, just want it and its propane line gone. May change my mind it the stove repair goes south, might need Aunt Elsie’s stove to bake Christmas cookies this year. Good plan for the back side yard Share before, during and after pics? Surprise container carrots? I’ll give that a try. Home grown carrots are so very much better than store bought.
Barbie you are so right about the price we pay for living in paradise. The blinding angry frustration I felt Thursday and part of Friday has abated somewhat. A reminder to me that I would benefit from regular meditation practice ;} your Thanksgiving plans. The only thing Joe really likes about Thanksgiving dinner is stuffing with gravy, so I’ll make some for him when the oven works.
Margaret thanks for the ginger tea (boil grated ginger 7-10 mins dash salt, cinnamon and half tsp local honey) recipe. Have all the makings, will try next time I want a bedtime snack.
KJ look forward to hearing more about your home made potions and lotions. If anyone can, you can.
Heather pancake Christmas lunch sounds great, fish soup not so much Really like your autumnal painting. Thanks for sharing!
Debbie it’s so sad what happened to Sears. Their appliances used to be best value and reliable. Their service was great. Don’t understand why they went bankrupt, always suspected someone high up milked the company like they did Railway express. Now “Sears Hometown Stores” sell k-rap, unrepairable appliances. My friend T had to replace stove, dishwasher and refrigerator, all Samsung, all less than five years old.
Vicki Extra fees without notice? Grr. Back in Idaho to renew registration online incurred a fee. You COULD renew in person but back then I didn’t have the spare time during the workday. Rocks and hard places. ((hugs))
Machka bravo to Rowan for noticing and removing the dot of sap. Yours to Michele, truth. Alas the work culture in the US is not as enlightened as in Oz. :{ Corporations are solely focused on profit, making it nearly impossible for small business owners to compete, or even survive.
@hmjack1561 con VERY gratulations on the 6K steps and eating below goal. You’ve found the keys, you can do this!!!
Michele didn’t realize that Mary Kay is still a thing
Kylia which walking app do you use? Dancing at the counter sounds like fun, and would make customers smile Sorry to hear R’s health is so fragile. Good compromise, wouldn’t want him getting sicker and around customers. Con VERY grats to your GS. Please tell me his parents are not the ones who owe you for the house…
Annie glad the knob locks got sorted out. Hope you can connect with the home health care folks soon. Your “do my best and then deal with whatever happens” self lecture is spot on.
Beth thank you for yours to Annie. Well said.
((hugs)) and healing energy to Rebecca, Rita, Flea and all who need them.

1. Make a list of new things you want to do this month. 1. Start Christmas shopping, 2. Work on my happiness, 3. Walk the mall at least once. 4. Read a new book
2. Respond to a difficult situation in a different way. I will see what comes up, but the daily readings I do have helped a lot already! Did this!
3. Get outside and observe the changes in nature around you..Supposed to be in the low 80’s (f) here today and the week to come so will have plenty of time to do this. Didn’t do this today, sick.
4. Sign up to join a new course, activity, or online community. I’ll have to look around for this. Thinking about something to do with MCC. I joined 2 new groups on FB.
5. Change your normal routine today and notice how you feel. Will do!
6. Try out a new way of being physically active. I will have to think about this. Maybe do a YouTube video. Did not do this.
7. Be creative. Cook, draw, write, paint, make or inspire. I will Zendoodle. I tried out my DH’s suggestion for mirror letters.
8. Plan a new idea or activity you want to try out this year. I have a water color set. I will experiment with that.
9. When you feel you can’t do something, add the word ‘yet’. I need to remember this.
10. Be curious, learn about a new topic or an inspiring idea. I learned about Alonon and downloaded their app and read through it.
11. Choose a different route and see what you notice on the way. I did this on my walk today.
12. Find out something new about someone you care about. Research time!
13. Do something playful outdoors - walk, run, explore, relax. Took a walk.
14. Find a new way to help or support a cause you care about. Have to think about this.
15. Build on new ideas by thinking “yes, and what if…” I will remember this!
17. Try a new way to practice self-care and be kind to yourself. Staying in bed and resting today.
18. Connect with someone from a different generation. I do this most days at the park.19. Broaden your perspective: read a different paper, magazine, or site.

Heather - Absolutely love that tree - one of your best, gorgeous colors, nice use of perspective using intensity, and very nice construction. I would be so pleased to get that if I were your sister-in-law.
Rebecca - Glad it's getting better, the whirlies are so hard to deal with and still keep living your life. Really glad Lee is taking care of you.
Barbara AHMOD - So glad you have plans with your friend for Thanksgiving. Sounds like lots of fun.
Talked to Corey about Thanksgiving over coffee this morning, and we're going to skip the whole thing and just enjoy the day together. Neither one of us is that fond of the traditional foods, and there's no family nearby to make us feel obligated to do the celebration.
He is outside finishing up the joists; it's beautiful, sunny and in the low 60s today. However, it's supposed to rain for the next couple days, so he wants to be done with this part of it today. I'm having a high-pain day for some reason, so I just get up long enough to scurry around and get a few things done, then back to sitting down to fold clothes and watch TV or write to y'all. I did finish the Orion afghan for my grandson, and I've got it washed and dried. Hopefully the washing removed most of Egg's kitty hair. I'll have to hide it until I'm ready to pack it up, because she really loves it, and keeping her off it is impossible! I know it's weird, but Tyler does love astronomy. Hopefully, he'll like it.
Later, y'all,
Love,
Lisa

Hi Gals,
Pictures – all of them! I love them - I love the little glimpse into your neighborhoods; your lives sometimes they even tell me I skimmed too much – Lisa your wonderful pottery in my mind was a light very slightly teal color…. And I sat stunned looking at the picture, and was so glad to read the comment and find out that it came out as it was expected – The navy is stunning but a shock as some how I had a completely different picture in my head.
Annie – I had the same challenge they assessed the house after my mom was home, and then there were tons of things to order and get, and great challenges to make things work while we waited. Showering and toileting were the worst if you think she’ll need a riser or handrails around the toilet order them from amazon NOW and return them if she doesn’t .
RVRita – I have one teddy bear and a stuffed moose, both in the guest room from when I had regular kid visitors.
Machka – everytime you mention the support services available via the health system I am more jealous of national health care. So many of the things you mention are just not available in the us or are only available at a huge cost.
Lisa – the color of the Orion Afghan is stunning. There is an Orion in my extended family he is about 9 years old and I was talking to his aunt who quilts as asked if she had thought of doing a Orion constellation quilt for Orion – and she did not know there was a star constellation named Orion……
OPPS!!! Forgot to post this… so some more comments on more posts
Lisa – the quilt is beautiful. So glad Corey has connections to get what needs to be done done….
Annie – One of the toughest things I have had to come to terms with is that my mom will die, and it may be soon or may be in a few years. She is making choices that are not in her best interest, but she wants the independence and she is happy with the choices she is making. So unless she is putting someone else in danger I try to step back and accept that I may deal with her death a bit sooner but she will have had the best last bit as is possible.
There are not as many offerings of help in my area that I wish there were, and the few that are there are very expensive, but check into everything that might help and might give you a break.
Michele – I was thinking about what you said about the casserole and the reaction of Ken and Lanette, what about a gift card for door dash to bring them a meal from a local restaurant? Or even dropping something off on their doorstep and calling as you drive away – telling them you were in a hurry to get some other things done, so just did a porch drop? Friends and I did a lot of porch drops during the pandemic.
Love ya all,
Kim in N. California

Just checking in. Today was rough. Just rough. It’s religion and politics all rolled into one, so I won’t get specific. I got up at 5 to be there at 7:15 to help with registration, spent all day Wednesday stuffing name badges and validating voting cards. Let’s just say it’s a rough end to a rough week. I’m glad it is somewhat over.12

Putting up Christmas decorations is something both dh and I do- he does most of the outside, I do the inside. Son and his girlfriend now decorate the tree.Used to be son and I decorating it together. I am ok watching Jona and Rovin do it-sweet to watch. Decorating outside for Christmas is the only decorations he does- is a grinch about everything else(every holiday-like Thanksgiving. If son isn't going to be here, he said don't bother cooking-I will cook anyways because I enjoy it. Made apricot pineapple preserves this afternoon to go on the ham if anyone wants it)
I go a bit overboard with decorations.
We usually get the tree up and the outside decorations done the Sat. after Thanksgiving and the rest of the house, inside, started that day. This year it will have to wait a day or two- We have the big sale at FanCon in SF Friday and Saturday. I don't have to go Friday but do Saturday. Maybe I will spend Friday, while he is gone, moving things around so we can get the tree up(it is up in storage in Fairfield-will have to go pick it up Sunday or Monday). The decorations stay up until the second week of January usually- depends on how I feel. Fake tree so it can stay up. Let's see how the two little cats do with the tree. Squirt bottles ready!!
Had a productive day. Walked MIL's dog, even though it was sprinkling- just a 25 min walk but better than nothing. Came home, got dishes done, two loads of laundry done and two refrigerators cleaned out along with a chicken pot pie put together and in the oven. All but the pot pie was done before noon.
Stayed busy so didn't eat until after the pot pie was in the oven. Had extra filling(everything was pre-cooked) so had a cup of the filling- really tasted great. Could have used a bit more salt but better to have too little than too much. It is cooling on the cutting board. Dinner, for who ever wants it will be that and some sliced avocado- pot pie has plenty of veggies in it already.

Saturday ...
3:30 am - the alarm goes off and we get up.
There is one reason why I would be up at 3:30 am for more than using the toilet and returning to sleep.
Any guesses what that reason is??

If you guessed cycling or a cycling-related activity, you guessed correctly!!!
Off the top of my head, I can't think of any other reason I would willingly get up at 3:30 am!!! The sun wasn't even up!!
4:00 am - we were in the van and I was driving to the town where the cycling event was to start.
The sun did come up on the way.
7:00 am - 4 riders set off on a gorgeous morning from one of Tasmania's cutest historic towns.
We walked over to a historic bridge and took some photos, and then went for breakfast and I had the best almond croissant and apricot danish I've ever eaten!!
We spent the day in that town ... cycling, walking, checking out the shops, eating, and reading a novel while waiting for the riders to come in.
It did cloud up and the riders got caught in a shower, but they didn't mind too much and all of them finished the 200 km ride.
We got home about 9:00 pm. 17 hours!!

My husband and I organised this cycling event. It is the first one to run out of this little historic town, and I think it might be an annual thing for a while.
4 riders (not us) rode the 205 km (127 miles) and successfully finished. Although some unexpected construction did some damage to one rider's tyre.
My husband and I saw the riders off, then had breakfast etc. At 40 km, they came back through the town, so we drove up to the next town and met them there to give them food and water. Then they were on their own for the rest of the ride. They did go through a couple other towns so they had access to food and water.
Meanwhile, my husband and I drove back to the start/finish town and did our own 30 km bicycle ride. The roads around there are so lovely and quiet!! Unlike where we live.
I spent some time in the touristy shops while my husband napped in the van.
Then lunch.
Then quietly reading until the riders came in.
Last night, I slept 11 hours ... I was so tired!!
Depending on the weather, today might be a bee and garden day. Or if it rains, I'll do something inside.

Lisa – Vince is like you, hates to get his hands dirty if he can help it. Yea, that first roofer was a piece of work. So glad you got the second one. Wonderful afghan! I know Tyler will love it
After work stopped at Food Lion and got more sweet potatoes that are in the freezer right now. Cooked them and will freeze some for later
Another beautiful day so Vince put up the rope lights and the “official wire wrap clipper” had her work cut out. Put yogurt in the IP so it should be ready late tonight. Then took a walk to the dollar store to get sympathy cards and some more dish towels. Better leave for church.

Going to see TSO in concert tomorrow. We’ll meet Jess and Colby for dinner first. I’m going to take my counter-top roaster with me and I told Jess today that I’m going to put Colby’s gift in the roaster. I don’t think he will think of looking in a roaster for a present….lol
Kim – that’s a great idea. I never thought of it! They do a lot of take out since Lynette doesn’t like to cook
pip – lovely pics. Thanks for sharing them
Think I’ll work on the next towel topper

Rebecca - I had that type of vertigo a couple weeks ago. After doing that Epely manoeuvre three times it cleared up.
My doctor told me it’s one of the joys of aging.
Vicki - all of these little charges sure do add up. Wages aren’t keeping up.
Heather - I love the autumnal painting.
Annie - I hope you had a smooth day today.
Barbara - I’m here, reading along just not taking a lot of notes at the moment. I had my first craft show today, the next two Saturdays as well. I’m hoping to get a couple more on but may not.
Lisa - that Afghan is beautiful.
Kim - I am always thankful for our healthcare system when any of you in the States mention the costs.
Pip - what a beautiful view.
Allie - I am watching Hallmark movies too. I think they have more interesting stories this year.
Machka - that’s early! Looks like it was a good day though.
I had my first show today it went well. I had a couple of fumbles. My Square reader wouldn’t work. I forgot my paint pen for personalizing. None of my paper products sold, but was still a good day.
I had a lot of people talking about this, house set but no one bought it.
Tomorrow I need to really clean this house and start working on stock for next week’s show. I start a new course on Monday so will probably have some homework. It seems the first week is more intense than the second when there are two weeks of the same course. One week courses are a bit too short and I feel they are too rushed.
