MFP Weekly Check-in January 8, 2024
Debbie in Napa Valley, CA - Up a pound over the past two weeks- 152.4 Getting back to tracking and walking this week.
Rita in Roswell, NM - I’m proud to say that I lost 3 pounds since last week. My change in diet and attention to what I’m eating is worth it!
Kylia in Ohio - Good morning! Small changes equal nearly a pound lost this week! I am excited to keep this roller coaster going downhill. Cheers to a week of continuing small steps.
Evie in BC - up half a pound this week.
Sue in WA State - started the year at 227 pounds. Walked 5 min per day 5 days this week.
Lanette in SW WA State – staying on even keel weight wise. Have lost 5 pounds in 5 months just by walking a lot more- 5 or 10 minutes at a time. Kind of fast – like I’m “in a hurry” mostly in the house while carrying some weights. Eating a lot more protein helps me limit sugary and "junk food" snacks.

Michael Moseley has a programme tonight on what is actually in people's shopping baskets as opposed to what they say they eat. Yes, I know it's a TV programme and a bit of a set up, but I think we are all guilty of editing our consumption. I consume too much alcohol. If we ate what we said we do,we would all be skinny. We know who we are!
I'm looking forward to watching it.
The stuff we admit to eating and the actual stuff we eat/drink can be very different.
Said with love and empathy.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx7 -
Lanette enjoyed the video. On his page except for the grains. He didn't discuss meat or fish either. I am eating less of those too. They take a longer time to digest. A question do these microbes help you digest harder to digest foods like meat, milk, eggs? Watched the video on the heart and it as I thought. Diet, exercise, figure out healthy ways to handle stress, and sleep can keep the stent doctor away!I do need to up my blue veggies and use more olive oil. I did sleep better the past two nights.2

Welcome to those who are new, we're glad you're here! Please feel free to drop into any conversation where you feel comfortable, or ask questions.
Allie - Don't beat up on yourself, baby girl, just do something about it. The recent emphasis here about uncluttering has a lot to do with people who feel the same way you do right now, but shame isn't useful. Determination, on the other hand, is very useful. Make a promise to yourself to put one thing away each day. Then tomorrow, put two things away. You can do this!
Well done to those checking in with Lanette - Owning our journeys is always the first step. What Heather said about admitting what we eat is one of those steps, too, one that MFP really helps with. I can always tell when I'm veering into sub-optimal eating, when I don't want to write down what I'm eating, or decide not to measure my food. Makes it so much easier for me to lie to myself!
The storm here brought winds high enough that it snapped my metal flagpole... but it's the hazard to an all-weather flag - wet fabric is heavy. Anything not nailed down outside has moved around, but so far, no major trees lost this time. The wind has dropped for now, but still pelting down rain.
The last day my daughter was here, Egg (the cat) spent all day between the bed cover and the sheet. Hiding from the bad critter, one assumes. I literally had to make the bed around her. She's apparently decided that's the best place for the winter, and even with the daughter gone, I'm still seeing the Egg lump under my bedcovers. Pretty sure she's decided that is now her warm and cozy place of choice for the winter. Not a battle worth fighting.
Heather, I had great sympathy at the time for your fears when your son and family were flying to and from the continent or Greece. When your heart is in the air with these so-loved people, you can't settle until their feet are on the ground at their destination. Mine have another four hours in the air, and will be landing in a rainstorm.
So, I'm going to go do something to distract myself until dinner, which will be leftovers.
Love y'all,
Later,
Lisa in AR6 -
Today’s gratitude: 1/8 the puppy tummy time alarm clock team
Not such a good start. Steps and vitamins down, Sugar, sodium, weight up. PT nonexistent. BUT, when I mistyped wt as “142.3"was grateful not to be there any more. ;}
Lanette you are so brave to update to Win 11 by yourself! I’ll have to be dragged kicking, screaming and clinging to Win10 by my fingernails. May my laptop outlive me!
Carol prayers for your DH, your BIL and you.
Machka doing one thing is a triumph when you’re sick. Hope the warmth and humidity help your breathing. Loved the meme, reminded me of the time my cat took one bite out of each of a dozen muffins . . . Glad you spoke with the MD and are taking your sick leave. ((hugs))
Kylia I just love your “you do you” advice to Allie and others. Well said. This morning’s quote: “When you say ‘yes’ to others, make sure you are not saying ‘no’ to yourself.”
“…I felt isolated being on one, like I wasn't doing something right.” IMHO anti anxiety prescriptions are medicines when taken according to Dr.’s orders. You are doing something right by following Dr.’s orders. And YOU are classy, beautiful and smart, not to mention an Energizer Bunny.
Rita How do you clean your salad spritzer? Mine got gummy and rancid and had to throw it away.
Barbie would you remind me how old your puppy is?
Rebecca what a blessing your sister is to you, and you are to her.
Heather “Doing something is always better than doing nothing.” I needed to be reminded, thanks!
Ginny 13K steps? Well done!
Debbie hope you continue to feel better and don’t overdo.
Margaret “…My take away is you never know where an opportunity might lead especially when others can count on you.” Truth this!
Pip poor Chispa! Good thing you have the trolley and sling. . .
Michele would you remind me why you can’t mail Lynette her gifts?
Simone congratulations on the 3 lbs but most especially for the miles walked. Well done!
Annie ((hugs)) You are right, you do not have much control over your dad’s eating and taking medicine. ((hugs))
Lisa the image of you waking to the Elvis movie and your “knew the ending” response to your daughter made me snort my tea.
Welcome back @cayenneandcoopersmom ! Term 2 of nursing school? Brava!

Septic guy came for the second time this morning. He came last Thursday but couldn't get the lid up so came back today. Was supposed to have help with the lid but the other guy got stuck with a non-working truck and couldn't make it so they are supposed to come back this afternoon for the third try. I certainly hope the third time is a charm.
Called the appliance people. They delivered our new clothes dryer on Saturday, did all the setup and then it did not work properly. Sent it back and they are working on getting us another one. I currently have wet laundry hanging in my bathroom and walk-in closet to dry.
Annie - go see your horse, Henry, I think. My horse Moose absorbed a lot of tears in his mane over the years I had him. Cortisol which is a stress hormone is released in tears and it always seemed to help.
Everyone take care, Sur in WA8 -

Margaret - I'm not sure if the healthier gut has impact on helping digestion of meat, milk and eggs. I'm no expert but I think the protein foods get digested in the small intestine and not the "gut" - colon? I could be completely wrong there.
I think the emphasis of this video was on increasing fiber and colorful fruits and veggies which helps our immune system, helps heal our gut lining and prevents leaky gut. And other benefits. I'm drawing on lots of other ZOE presentations I've watched, not from what he said (or didn't say ) in this video.
Barbara - I'm sure downloading Win11 on this laptop was MUCH easier due to the fact it was a clean slate. Loved this morning's quote, “When you say ‘yes’ to others, make sure you are not saying ‘no’ to yourself.” I seem to be reminding myself of that a lot lately.
Sue - for Pete's sake! What next? Hope third time is a charm with the septic guy getting that lid removed. What a shame about that new dryer. Can I ask where you purchased it?
Pip - how's Kirby?
Heather - Mosley's program should be interesting. My shopping basket is generally the healthiest though I do have slip ups. But compared to the carts/buggies? loaded with chips, cookies and soft drinks all around me at the grocery, mine isn't bad. I don't know how they afford this stuff.
The wind has picked up a little. Hope we don't get what Lisa had, but there's always a chance. So far my temporary fixes to the chicken coop and run seem to be holding to keep the horizontal rain out. and Lisa - I've started logging a lot more since I'm curious about my protein intake.

Lynette - we got the dryer at Albert Lee. They are working on getting us a different one. We bought our refrigerator from them a couple of years ago and have been really pleased with it.2

Quick bio for those who are new: At the age of 45, I was 5'1" tall and weighed 303 pounds. That was 19 years ago now, I'll be 64 in 2025. I had a gastric bypass, and dropped down to 137 over the next two years, watched my first marriage die with a whimper and not a bang, and landed back in my home state of Texas in early 2008. Met the love of my life within the first month I was there, but we were both in the middle of a divorce and didn't start dating for six months. Married him six months after that, and he brought a 17-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son with him. They now both call me "Mom," and my grands call me "Gramily." Because I won't answer to anything else.
I was diagnosed infertile 40 years ago now, so to say my life is different than I could have imagined is wildly underestimating it. However, the happier got, the more weight I gained... But four years ago now, I began dealing with an autoimmune disease, and either the disease or the medications forced my weight from 219 down to 137 again, and forced me into retirement at age 60. In the last year, I've been able to start getting healthier and stabilize my weight between 150 and 155, which I'm pretty happy with, as I feel better than I did at 137. I'm back up to 5'2" tall, as it was the weight that was compacting me so many years ago, as well. Health is my main focus, naturally, and am working toward a way to eat that will not hurt me, but help me, as are we all.
Re: Protein digestion -Protein begins being digested in the stomach, and is digested in various parts of the small intestine, and finally digested in the ileum, which is the last part of the small intestine as it ends into the large intestine. Should be right around your right pelvic bone or thereabouts. It's also where you absorb B12, among other things. I'm reasonably aware of it because ileitis, or inflammation of the ileum, is what moved me from a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis to a Crohn's disease diagnosis, which simply involves further inflammation up into the small intestine as the major difference.
Relaxing now all the chores are done... the fire's burning merrily, and I'm chilling out, crocheting in between writing y'all and watching a little TV. Still need to shower before Corey gets home.
Later, y'all,
Love,

My doctor appointment last Friday was interesting. I told him about my heart rate going up and he asked if I had an apple watch. I said yes and he showed me an app on my phone that recordes differnt heatlh things and stores them. So he went back to Oct 22 and saw where and how often it goes way up. So Thursday afternoon I go back to had a patch put on I wear for 2 weeks. Then I go next month to get the results and see what the next step it.
Rebecca--I mailed a package of last years calendars. The note I wrote I found on the floor later. So when you get the package from Nebraska with no note that is me. Hope you can use them.
Allie--So happy Carmine and Seth came to the party.
Carol--Hugs you have been missed. Take care of yourself.
Machka--Glad you are feeling better. On the death of your ex. I do not think there is any right or wrong way to feel. I know when my ex passed I had mixed feelings and we shared a son so I felt I had to be nice for his sake.
They were talking about a winter storm last evening in to today. When I got up and came to work it was 33 and cloudy. But since then it has gotten cold and windy. Started with rain and now snow. Have several inches so far and no sign of stopping. I am glad my night help is on site. A lot of staff is staying in empty patient rooms. Good old fashion snow storm. Gald DH has big truck with 4 wheel drive so I know I will get home.
Blessings, Vicki GRAND ISLAND, NE where you can not see 10 feet outside the door.7 -
We had a few flurries of snow today, but nothing settled. Tomorrow should be fine, I hope, as it is school pick up day.
I will,be very, very upset and sad when my ex dies. He hasn't been well recently, with a fall and cracked ribs. I never stopped loving him. I mourned for four years from separation until the actual divorce. I still dream of him. It was a mutual decision, instigated by me, but I think we had both run out of trying. We could have tried again at one point, and I often think about that, but we were tired. Too much water under the bridge. He has a whole new family now.
I know it will hit me hard if I outlive him. We met when I was 17, turning 18, and married at 20. Three babies. 28 years married. Three years together at uni before that. He is an old, frail, man now. But I wish we had known how to practice love better.
Lots of love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx8 -
Barbara and Lanette Thank you both! I am on Buspirone for depression/anxiety. It has taken 10 months for it to actually make a difference in my life, but I believe it has. "Energizer bunny" still needs her down time and is learning to take it. Small steps and perseverance.
Simone I made note so I can ask my sister when she is reachable again.
Vicki Stay safe! We got an inch of snow Saturday, gone by 11 am. Forecasted for Lisa's storm tomorrow-high winds and rain high of 50 then falling. Wednesday snow. Next week our highs are 8n the teens! This has been a rough year for the seasons. They are mixed up.
Close to time to leave work. I wiped down all equipment today and replaced the door buzzer. Massage is next! Yay!
Stay safe wherever you are!
Make the best choice you can.
Just take the first step, it really is the hardest.

My cleaner took the knives and I finished sorting and cleaning the kitchen drawers. Three oyster knives anyone? Random picks? Two nutcrackers. Haven't cracked a nut in 20 years! I've moved them to the utility room under 'pending'. Divested myself of random bits of silverware!
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx
I have two nut crackers, haven't cracked a nut in a long time BUT I do use them for cracking crab- Have two crabs I just picked up that are sitting waiting for me to crack out now. Store still had them on sale(seafood manager said he ordered too many so keeping them at the great sale price of $4.95 a pound) Hope they are as good as the ones we had last week. Would not pay $12.99 a pound but the 4.95 we will enjoy them again. Will need to make more cocktail sauce

Was starting to worry... but daughter and youngest grandson and granddaughter are on the ground in Oahu, after circling for nearly an hour, due to the storm. My heart has finally receded from my throat.

Worked then senior bowling. I actually broke 100 one time out of three games! Admitted, not by much, but I still broke 100! Ceramics tonight where I worked some more on my praying mantis and picked up my California Raisin. It’s supposed to rain tomorrow so looks like I’ll be doing a walking DVD at home. I really prefer to walk outside but I’m not about to walk in the rain
Ken & Lynette are coming here for dinner Sun. She has a radiation treatment tomorrow and another one Fri so she said that Sun would be better. That’s fine by me.
Terri – condolences to your hubby
M – so sorry about your first husband. I would at least send a card. Good that you are Covid negative
kylia – yes, I do use gloves. But for things like the onions, I don’t wear them when I’m peeling them, but I do when I’m separating them. With the lettuce, I don’t wear them when I’m slicing the lettuce or rinsing it, but I do wear them after it’s been rinsed and put in the containers. So my hands are in water a lot.
Annie – what a scare you must have had being told that your father was in the hospital! Glad he’s OK, tho. Ride your horse, they are good companions when you are down
Rita – one of the best skills I learned was typing. It amazes kids today that I can type and not look at the keys. I laugh around here when the “s” word is even suggested. From living in the Poconos, I learned that you keep a loaf of bread in the freezer and powdered milk/eggs in your pantry.
CooperandCayennesMom – WB! How much longer for you in nursing school?
Vince got all the lights off the arches today. So that’s all that’s left of the outside decorations. And we figure if the wind blows the arches and they crack, it only means we have to but more PVC pipe. Not a big expense.
Barbara – interesting that you mentioned mailing Lynette her gifts. I would stop by her office, but I know that Ken would want to see Vince. See, ever since he retired, it seems that he really doesn’t do much. He plays his guitar, but that’s about it. No real hobbies.
Sue – how aggravating that the septic guy has to keep coming back. And then your dryer!
Pip – good for you keeping Kirby in line. We need him
Jennifer – welcome! Tell us more about yourself
Lisa – I know I always worry until Jess calls to say that she’s home safely. I swear, some of these gray hairs are attributable to that

Well yesterday was not fun. My dad collapsed at the early church service. There was a very tense ride to meet him at the hospital, but he was awake when we got there. Then we spent the rest of the day figuring out his thyroid was low because he has been missing his pills. His heart is fine. Got home after dinner.
So I have to be sure he eats right. Not that I have much control.
Meanwhile my anxiety levels are rising. I wanted to dye my hair yesterday. I have a list of errands for today. So many things to remember. I'm trying to stay calm and steady. I should meditate some.
Hope today is a better day for all of us.
Annie in Delaware
Can you have a carer come in for your father? Even just for an hour to set up his medications and keep an eye on him so you can go out for a walk, run errands, etc.?
I have depended a lot on lists and my Google Calendar over the past 6 years. Every time I think of something I need to remember, I add it to the list, or if I don't have the list at hand, I send myself a text or email. I even do that at midnight when I'm lying in bed and all of a sudden I remember things ... I send myself an email.
These are for you too @grandmallie ... one thing at a time.

Regarding my ex husband ...
I haven't seen or spoken to him in 20 years - 2004, not long before I moved away from Winnipeg. I actually didn't think he would last this long. Because of his weight, eating habits, smoking, and numerous health issues I figured he wouldn't make 60. But he was in his early 60s.
A bit more ...I presume the remaining family (and him at the time of his death) are all living in the same house they lived in forever, but I don't know that for sure. His parents had 6 kids and I think only one ever left the home & family. My husband did for a short while when he was with me, but even then he spent a lot of his time over there and would frequently drop everything we were doing or planning to do to dash over to "help" his family.
I was often left to do my own thing ... which ended up suiting me just fine.
Memories ... I guess there are a few good ones. The first 2 or 3 years were all right when we weren't living in Winnipeg, but as soon as we moved to Winnipeg, I realised I had made a big mistake. His family was his priority and I was nothing more than his money-maker and housekeeper. We were together 12 years before I finally snapped and we separated. I had stopped loving him, but kept trying to make things better for us for a while because I didn't want to just give up. I hoped maybe one day things would get better. So mainly I remember being frustrated and angry all the time. I would come home from work and as I opened the door of the apartment, I would feel angry.
About a month after we separated, I remember opening the door of the apartment ... and not feeling angry!! It was such an amazing feeling!! Like a huge weight or dark cloud was gone. I went to see my parents several months later and they commented I was like a different person ... noticeably happier.
We were married another 4 years before the divorce came through. It would have happened sooner, but after telling me he'd take care of everything, he "disappeared" for a couple years - had to send a detective to find him.
And ever since we separated, I've had recurring nightmares of him deciding that he has a right to move in with me because I was his wife. Maybe those will stop now.

Kylia - I looked up "energizer bunny" in the dictionary and there was a photo of YOU. I need to get you out here to get my shop in order. Congrats to your sister on her accomplishments. Beautiful gal!
Rebecca - sorry to hear about your sister's friend passing and her not going to the funeral. I totally understand. So glad you are there for her.
Machka - happy to hear you are no longer covid positive. Hope you get over the sinus infection quickly. Re the death of your ex - I think it's normal to take a little trip down memory lane.
Simone - good job on the walking.
Annie - sorry to hear about your dad and that your Sunday plans were shot. Good that it wasn't his heart and his thyroid can be regulated if he'll just stay on his pills. Keeping older folks on track with the pills can be challenging. My husband always took his pills at night after I went to bed - I'd sometimes get up in the morning to make coffee and see one on the floor or in the sink.
Heather - the first thing I noticed when I started leaving the highly processed and sugary foods alone was no more bloating. I was surprised - and grateful - it was that simple.
Lisa - sounds like you and Corey had a nice time with Kels and love hearing about the progress in getting your sun room usable and comfy. Back to the old (but good!) routine this week, right?
I decided I'm not going to focus on the weather report for anything out more than two days. The weatherman can't seem to get it right anyhow. I think I'm ready for whatever comes. Some big rain today and tonight, but I'm pretty sure I have the girls' run fairly protected now and won't get a repeat of the flooding I had several weeks ago.
Wishing everyone a great week! Back later-
