Good mornign ladies. I missed my morning workout. I'm really sore from Insanity yesterday. I wanted to see how working out tonight went with food and hydration in my system. I think maybe yesterday I was dehydrated and that's why I got so light headed. I'm supposed to leave work early tonight so I'm gonna try and get my workout in tonight. Gotta push through! Didn't track yesterday. I'm back to tracking TODAY! I measured my breakfast and off to a good start. The scales moving in the wrong direction. I had been maintaing a 207-209 and I'm up to 211.2 this morning. I hope it's the sodium from Pei Wei!!

Heather-I did not get my 30 minutes in last night. I sat in traffic forever last night and after dinner I sat and relaxed for a bit and passed out. Guess that's what getting up at 4:30 will do to you.

    Checking in for yesterday:
Cals - Over by 142....hmm, almost exactly what my notfat chai latte was. So while it was delicious, it did make me not meet the challenge. 1342 total
    Water - 88 oz - CHALLENGE MET
Exercise - nada, but that's ok, there's always today
Proud - Made lunch for today and tomorrow last night. Seems silly, but it feels good to be prepared w/affordable and portioned meals!

ladeb - Julie will be able to give you all sorts of info on not eating enough and how you can add things in to get to your calories!

Check In for Yesterday & a Question

    Calories - over by 179
Water - 80 oz - still need to meet goal of 100
    Exercise - none
Proud: Still caffeine free (over 30 days)

Question: Can you eat to little? If so, what are the negative side effects? With the exception of yesterday, I have had struggled with getting all the way up to 1200 and with exercise, I never make it. Thoughts?

Yes, you can certainly eat too little. The first effect of eating too little is likely to be the slowing down of your metabolism. But, if you eat too little to an extreme enough degree, your body will begin shutting down "nonessential" functions to conserve energy. This could go so far as to cause serious damage to your organs. Also, if you're eating so little, you're likely not getting in enough good nutrition which could potentially have many detrimental effects on your health.

I'm not trying ot be a fear-monger here or anything and the above examples may take it to a more extreme degree than what's in question. But I guarantee if you eat too little for too long (and this varies from person to person) your metabolism will DEFINITELY be negatively affected. I have struggled with metabolism issues all year because of the damage I did eating way too little last September - January. I was eating about 1100-1200 calories/day but I was exercising a LOT so that I was netting 0-700 calories most days. Hoping others will learn from my mistakes. I knew it could happen because of everything I had read on MFP, but I didn't realize it would be so difficult to overcome once it did happen.

Edit: suggestions on how to eat more healthy calories? Spoonful of peanut butter & a glass of milk (2tbs pb & 8oz 2% milk = 320 calories). Avocados and olive oil are my other favorite calorie packed healthy foods.

Ladeb, if you haven't read the posts below, they're great at explaining why eating less may not be the best idea.

This is just my opinion but depending on your body type and what your physician recommends it may be ok for you.My doctor told me I would be fine on a diet of 1100-1300 calories a day with no exercise or light exercise and still lose weight efficiently without putting my body into starvation mode as long as they are good calories because I am obese. But he also said as I gradually lose weight and start to exercise more my body would need more fuel.Does this make sense? I am putting myself back on this for awhile and slowly building myself back up to my 1 hour of exercise daily but for now I am keeping it low cal because I have been naughty for the past few weeks and I need to retrain my brain.Once I teach myself to clean up my poor eating habits then I will begin exercising again.

I do agree with Julie and others that you can eat too little but everyone is different as to how much they should or shouldn't eat.Check with your doctor is my best advice!

    Yes everyone is different.

I would check with a registered dietician if you're really concerned, though, and not your doctor. Honestly, your doctor will probably dole out some advice but they've probably had very very little education on nutrition/weightloss. And that's okay, the doctor is plenty knowledgeable about all kinds of medical things we need them to know about. But it's impossible to know everything, even if it's related to the field you're educated in. Even your doctor doesn't know exactly how your body is going to respond to something. That's why we have specialists like registered dieticians to help us out. There may be some trial and error but I really feel it's so much of a better idea to be cautious about this stuff. I do wish I had listened to those who cautioned me. I will definitely approach it differently next July when I'll start the process of rocking on down to my goal weight.

I completely agree!!! You are living proof that it works!! Believe me it has been trial and error for me as well.Even though my doc said I would do ok on 1100 cals a day I feel much better at 1200-1400 cals a day without exercise and I still lose weight. So I think you are absolutely right that doctors don't know everything. And as long as those 1200-1400 cals aren't junk and they are good wholesome foods then I am getting proper nutrition and when I begin to exercise like I was before I already know I will need more calories to keep my metabolism going.THANKS JULIE for educating us we really do appreciate having you around!!

Laila: I'm thinking about starting the 2 week jumpstart on Monday 12/6 because it will give me a chance to go grocery shopping this weekend after I get paid. It doesn't sound hard and definitely makes sense. Getting the sugar counts down will be the hardest park after the initial two weeks, but like I said before, her points about it make a TON of sense to me. Darn you, sugar!

Julie: Thanks for the reminder about registered dietitians. I'm thinking I should go to one to give me a better idea of what I should be eating for calories. I just can't seem to lose weight!

Thanks to all for the feedback.

I think I am doing pretty good. I read the posts about the calculations and reviewed a handful of mine. I went to the BMR said 1557 and trainer has said between 1200 and 1500 (high end on exercise days).

Based on above, I think my calorie intake is good and it is becoming amazingly healthy too! Now for more water...

    thanks again!

Hello all! I'm new to the group and just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Rachel and I'm currently a student that's working on living a much healthier lifestyle. I started working on my health in March 2010 at 285lbs and I'm now 209lbs. It's been a long journey, and I've done most of it on my own, so it'd be simply amazing to have other people to talk to and share my journey with.

    Check in:
Calories: Slightly under my limit by 100
    Water: 12 glasses
    Exercise: 30 minutes of cardio
And up way too late for my liking, time for bed! :P

Well I didn't get my evening workout in last night. I got home got dressed and my Mom came in and just piled on the bad news. I wasn't in the mood after that. I just wanted to be. My littest niece Carolyn was taken to the hospital last night with black and blue marks on her legs. I guess their first thought was meningitis. Found out about midnight last night that they think she has a rare blood disorder. My sister said she's in a lot of pain and her little body is swelling up. They are taking her to a children's hospital this morning for a second opinion. The hospital she was at last night said that you can't treat it you just have to let it run it's course and hope it doesn't do any damage. She's only 4 years old. Please keep her in your prayers. She needs them! I'll be back later to chat more. I gotta finish getting ready for work.

Jess I will definitely be keeping your niece in my prayers. Please keep us posted!!

I am changing my diet to vegetarian.I started today and so far so good.I will officially start next week because I haven't made it to the grocery store. The reason I am going vegetarian is because meat really upsets my stomach so I am going to give this a try and see how it works out for me as far as weight loss!! Can't hurt right?

By the way Niveous welcome to our group and congrats on your success thus far!
  • Hi Ladies,

I'm new to this board and this site. My name is Veronica and I have 2 sweet children that I stay home with. I currently weight approx 240lbs the heaviest I have ever been even heavier than during my pregnancies. I want to lose weight and you ladies seem to be doing well and sticking with it even when you have slip ups. Could any of you point me in the right direction on this site for figuring out what to eat? For exercise I think that I'll be walking either using my treadmill or going outside depending on the weather and kids.
