Someone please tell me when I'm going to have the opportunity to use my 500 pound grip strength in the real world. What world are you folks living in where you need to grip 200+ pounds? Is it a Flintstones couch?
Why did I train with straps? WHY???

Tell your SO- tell them its' going to be ugly and you'll whine
Buy stretchy pants
set a window of bulk- a min and a max- will help you to keep from bailing out before too soon and on a day when you want to abandon ship.
buy more stretchy pants
pack your jeans away the first month or two you're there.
Bulk over winter
buy more stretchy pants.
Be fickle in tracking- it's easy to cheat yourself subconsciously- because of all that.
seriously. its' not as "easy" as people like to make it out to be- the steps are easy- but fighting the confidence and sheer power of will to get through it are big.

I quite believe that only 1% of the population can deadlift 400lbs, however, a lot of people don't lift. I don't believe that only that small amount of (male) lifters who put a significant amount of effort into their deadlift will achieve that weight. I don't know what the % is but I'd bet money it's way more than 1%.
I started 5x5 back last November. I think my first deadlift was 135. I've changed up my program since but for my deadlift I've pretty much been adding 5lbs a week (10 lately) for at least 1 max rep and I'm just got 365lbs this past Saturday. Your interpretation of the stat kind of echos my sentiment. Does it mean total population, males and females? Does it take into account children? Does it mean 1% of lifters? As you implied, all it takes is a little focus and decent gains can be made relatively quickly.
He's exaggerating, 400lbs deadlift is nothing special.
Anyone who lifted more than 2 years and sticked to proper routine can do 400lbs for reps.
The ability of being able to lift that is highly dependent on size, gender and genetics.
Any healthy male over 160lbs should be able to deadlift 405 after 2 years.0 -

If you're training for aesthetics, it's questionable whether you even want to do deadlifts to begin with, much less a bunch of grip work just to improve your ability to do strapless deadlifts. If you're training for power lifting or strong man though, of course grip strength is very important.

Birthday was in Feb- BF was taking me to dinner- said where something you don't mind getting dirty <questionmarks>
so I stuffed myself into jeans- got in the car- figured we were going to all you can eat Brazillian... half way there I was so upset about being in my pants that were uncomfortable to sit in... so I made him stop at Target so I could buy new pants (none of them fit- so double wammy) and just ate dinner with my top button unbuttoned.
Tried to make the most of it- we went to the after dinner thing- got home and he had THREE EFFING BIRTHDAY CAKES for me.
Fortunately I was still bulking- but still- mentally it was almost more than I could take. It is to date the most memorable and worse day of my bulk.

Wow! Lots of good back and forth going on here. This is the first time one of my posts ended up longer than 1 page.
I use straps a lot. I'm 49 and I haven't deadlifted in a while, but I may start doing it again. I've tried to build up my grip strength from time to time. Eventually, I get blisters under my callouses and it hurts too much to lift. The straps make quite a difference. For instance, I can barbell shrug 315 for 8-10 reps with straps. Without straps, I would probably use 275 for 6-7 reps and my forearms would be burning and I would barely feel anything in my traps. With or without straps, my grip strength increases as long as I'm working out consistently.
I have never used anabolic steroids or growth hormone. I've been taking one pump of Androgel to keep my testosterone in the mid 500 range for about 6 years. The Androgel never felt like it helped my lifting much, but I wouldn't mind if it did.0 -
I'm a 6'1" 40-something and went from not lifting at all to DLing 5 reps at 325 pounds over the space of about 4 months. Legs, back, core etc felt fine, it was my grip that gave out (I don't use belts/straps/etc). This while in a caloric deficit, where I was dropping about 1.5 pounds a week. No, I wasn't gaining appreciable amounts of muscle, but I could feel myself learning how to get "explosive" (ie, CNS improvements).0

What research shows adding deads to a bodybuilding routine improves cns recovery and increases growth? None. And mosy bodybuilders will tell you based on experience that it can often hurt.
Good luck developong a bodybuilding routine that relies solely on peer-reviewed research. There isnt much of it in this world0 -

Squats have about zero relevance. Deadlifts are much more cns taxing. Do any successful powerlifters, let alone bodybuilders, make good progress Deadlifting twice a week? Nevet heard of a single one who preferred that over once evey week or better yet, every 2weeks. 6x weekly and you'll be removing weight every workout. Couple that with a volume bodybuilding split and deadlifts every week or more are just plain stupid if mass is the goal.
But sure, give it a shot. /shrug

I've already had this discussion with Mity through messages, but what I intended by my comments earlier in the thread is exactly what trojan is saying. Not everyone uses deadlifts as a primary builder because deadlifts are pretty much the most taxing exercise out there, and while that can be good for many purposes, they're not optimal for every goal and every person. Some people are going to see better results doing deadlifts infrequently and focusing on less-taxing exercises that help pack on mass and that they can do more frequently (i.e., because they're less taxing). For a beginning lifter looking to put on mass quickly, deadlifts are great. For a powerlifting competitor, they're a no brainer (although even then, as trojan points out, a lot of routines will program DLs maybe once a week yet you might squat 6x a week). For an advanced bodybuilder, I'd say it's a maybe and it depends on your programming, but a lot of the top guys do not do them routinely. And that's not to say those guys can't go out and pull a stupid amount of weight on any given day - it's just that they don't always do it routinely because it's not always optimal for their goals. You see a lot of football coaches recommending against deadlifts for similar reasons (taxing on CNS, risk of injury, etc.).
Really though, I'm not anti-deadlift, not even in the slightest - I do them myself and never intended my comments to be read as "don't lift heavy and never do deadlifts" or even how the discussion went down that road. But while I may personally think that deadlifts are a good choice for many people, I'm just saying they're not optimal as a primary builder and for every training program regardless of the person's goals. As I said to Mity though, as popular as DLs are around here, I should have known better than to ever suggest that deadlifts might not always be optimal on a public forum. :laugh:0 -

I'd be willing to bet there are successful deadlifters who pull at varying intensities and volumes twice per week. Such as 1 heavy and 1 speed day or a similar set up. I also know for a fact that some very successful prep coaches have at least some of their athletes pulling twice/week. But it's typically not 2 heavy-*kitten* sessions.0 -

For PL comps, because a belt is allowed and straps aren't. And yes, wrist wraps are allowed.
For general fitness, do whatever you want but don't claim it as a "raw" lift. That is why people have gym PR's and comp PR's as a comp PR is judged to a certain standard ie. no hitching on a deadlift. Refer to strongman/crossfit for a good demonstration of hitching

to play devil's advocate, Andy Bolton's program is 3x a week deadlifting.
I agree with you though. As soon as you can lift a decent amount going heavy more than 1x a week is generally not going to be very beneficial as it is very hard to recover from.0 -
