Everyone has their preferences about what they wear. Like the OP, I like to keep myself more covered, but it's really important to recognize that this is a personal choice, not one that you should judge other for. If they feel confident being in a bikini thong, then that's awesome. Life's too short to worry about what other people do so much especially when it has no bearing on you at all.

This thread makes me fear for my daughter. I do a lot of the things I do so she can know it's ok to love herself and be confident and proud no matter what the hell she looks like.

Here's my pic again just to annoy the judgmental people on here.

If we're fat, we should be ashamed to flaunt the fat. If we're ridiculously boney skinny the same thing. Its disgusting and its disgusting because of what it equates to... bad health and bad diet and lifestyle or a combination. Wearing a bikini is a privilege for those in great condition.

A second unrelated point is that not every body suits everything, likewise a bikini... there are different bits of clothing and swimwear for every frame and they should be worn accordingly/appropriately. No-one likes looking at a fat person showing every last inch of her cellulite off to "show how confident she is" It's all fake confidence because why would they be on a dieting site if they were proud of that body aesthetically, health wise or for both reasons?

Bikinis are a glamour piece of clothing and should not be work by underweight or overweight people to glamourise both extremes of health. Wear something that suits you.

Society's expectations didn't come out of nowhere... they came from knowing what healthy looks like and that's not an underweight or overweight person... both bad health!

Actually.. I came to a fitness site so I could find people who were on the same page as I was.. NOT because I hated myself... Every inch of cellulite is shown when I wear my one piece too you know... my legs have cellulite.. and actually my lumps and bumps are more evident in my one piece than when I wear my 2 piece..

My 7 year old niece actually said "Aunty, that 1 piece suit is just no darn good, it makes you look ugly." I put on my 2 piece and she said "ah that is much better" so Eff off with the bikinis are for one kind of person...

There is also a thing called health at every size.. Some FAT people are healthier than SKINNY people, just because one is skinny does not mean they are healthy, and fat people are not all unhealthy, some of us fat people are quite physically active. I say if it makes you happy wear it...

If someoen doesn't like looking at it they really do not have to.

I am appalled by this post. How dare you be so judgemental of people that took a lot of guts and bravery to post such proud and beautiful pictures of themselves? On a site that is promoting healthy lifestyles and healthy people it should be ENCOURAGED that people post CONFIDENT photos of themselves, even if that means in bikinis, and in return receive positive feedback on those photos. I would be ashamed to be your daughter as you are such a prudish c*nt.

THIS is disgustingly judgmental and YOU should be ashamed of yourself. Seriously, the lady who started this post is allowed to have her opinion and just because you don't agree with her post doesn't give you any license to say such horrible judgmental things. I was never allowed to wear overly revealing clothing as a child and as an adult I have made the choice to continue to dress modesty. There is nothing wrong with this and this woman did not say ANYTHING unkind or discouraging Seriously, get over yourself and your opinions and try to be more open minded. I am just disgusted with the things you say and then accuse her of being judgmental. WOW

I already posted on here once, but I have come to a brilliant idea after reading more. I think tonight I shall do a bikini photo shoot with myself and post the pictures all over MFP, and I challenge all of you to do the same

  • I think body confidence is hugely under-rated.

However; is it really confidence that leads a woman to feel she needs to display her nearly naked body for comment?

Personally (and yes, this is my OPINION) I prefer to keep some parts of my body a secret for only my husband to unwrap. I don't wear a bikini. I don't wear a sports bra without a shirt over it. I don't wear "ta-da!" shorts. Or any number of the myriad of revealing clothes that I've been told I should aspire to wear. I don't let my daughter wear them either.

    Thoughts....

I have to agree with you OP.
It's one thing to want to show off the hard work you put in, but you don't have to show off your @ss or boobs to do so.
Like you, I prefer to keep myself for hubbies eyez only.
I still have a long ways to go to my goal, but I'm modest enough and smart enough to know scantily dressed photos can cause marital/relationship problems and that's drama that I DON'T want or need.
    Thanks for posting =]

sooooo, wearing a bikini equals being scantily clad?!? Really?!?

I feel like I need to say a couple of things... 1. I believe in modesty, and in not flaunting everything in a public place. 2. There are various different cuts of two piece swimsuits and even bikinis. I feel like in many cases, you almost have to be more in shape to wear a one piece bathing suit, and I find them very uncomfortable because I have a somewhat long torso.

You can choose a bikini that is made up of more than "nipple covers" and a thong. My two piece, if you read the original bikini thread, has boy short bottoms, which cover more than even some one pieces, and my top is a halter style with wide straps, and good coverage. My tummy and back are the only thing showing that wouldn't normally show in a one piece. I think you can definitely own a "bikini" that is somewhat modest, but the idea of modesty might be different from person to person and body type to body type. I wouldn't wear a string bikini because I wouldn't feel covered up enough on the bottom, and the top would more than likely not be supportive enough. I have a sister who could easily pull off a "smaller" suit without looking immodest because of her frame.

Besides all of that, I feel like this site is an exception to the rule. I'll admit I don't particularly like pictures of people in lingerie; I just don't feel it's appropriate when there are tons of other ways to show off your progress, but on a fitness site, I don't see why tasteful bikini pics are a problem...

Edited to add: By the way, I just noticed that my bathing suit top shows less than what you're showing in your profile pic. :-/

So while I'm on my journey to a healthier, more fit me...I should cover up until I get to my goal? No thanks. I'm not "flaunting my fat" when I go to the beach. Guess what I AM doing, though? I'm going to the ****ing beach! I know--hard to believe. Not everyone goes to the beach to "flaunt themselves." They go because they find it FUN and I don't know about your beaches, but here in Florida, the beaches are usually hot. I'm not going to wear a wool coat while I walk in the nice hot sand to please someone else. Also, I know people who are overweight yet completely healthy...healthier even than some people who are looked at as "fit"...so I guess those people, by your logic, should cover up, because even though they're healthy, they don't look it? Give me a break.

You are, and never will be, in any position to tell anyone what is and isn't confident for them. You can only decide that for yourself, no matter how much you'd like to dictate otherwise.

As for the OP, your opinion is just fine and dandy for you, but it's exactly what you said--your opinion. I personally laugh at the idea that a woman's body is nothing more than a "secret" for a man to "unwrap." The only one who owns my body is me. You do what makes you happy, and everyone else will do what makes them happy.

I agree whole heartedly. As a husband I don't want everybody to see what's there on either my wife or my 3 girls. I try to teach modesty whenever I can because Lord knows what's going on when I'm not around. Besides. I think it's more intriquing when there is something left to the imagination. Be proud of what you have but that doesn't mean show it off to everybody!

So whilst you're having a go at me... I wasn't just fat "bashing", I was also underweight "bashing".

I'm not stopping anyone wearing a bikini and I'm entitled to my own opinion... You all just want to hear one thing...why bother posting asking for thoughts if you don't want to know genuine thoughts?

I was overweight, I was appalled by it and I certainly didn't deserve to wear a bikini because of the way I had abused my body through lack of exercise, binge drinking and over eating rubbish. I turned this round and am now closer to a position wear I deserve to wear one.

Don't "bash" the person who's being honest and don't try to make others with my opinion feel unwelcome to post and silenced. We have an opinion and we have our reasons for having that opinion just as you do. It is after all, JUST an opinion. I'm not going round forcing people to cover up or anything and well, if those with far from suitable bodies for a bikini choose to wear one, more power to you, but don't expect me to like it. Why not have a bit of self respect and dignity and choose a nice one piece suit that flatters your figure?!

i like to see what the actual body looks like - not whats hidden under layers of clothing, a woman showing off clearly defined abs is much more inspirational to me than a woman wearing a t-shirt -

i'm not being pervy at all and there shouldnt be any embarrassment about the human body god made you naked didnt he? i like to see what hard work looks like and for me its many many times more powerful if i can see muscle definition, you cant see that under clothes.

I PREFER my daughters wear bikinis. Bikinis on babies and small children are wonderful. Easier diaper changing and/or going to the bathroom. Ever try to wiggle a 3 year old out of a wet once piece in time for her to pee? Not easy.

I think this forum needs more burqa pics personally. I mean what can a bikini shot show about improving body composition that a burqa can't?

And what do you think should be done with these "*kitten*"? These brazen women daring to dress as they choose, almost like it were a free society or something...

Is public shaming enough or should we start stoning them?

Um, I'm pretty sure we should form a Beauty & the Beast-scene mob with all the MFP villagers and go stone the slutty wenches! And bring the magic mirror so they can see their whorish selves while they're being stoned.

the same ones who turn down the fatter candidate at a job interview?

^offensive. And I dont even wear bikinis. You're blaming society's expectations, when really it's just your own. If you dont want to see an overweight/underweight chick in a bikini, look the other way. They have every right to wear whatever they want to wear.
