My brother had surgery on his spine last week and the surgery went fine, he just didn't want to wake up... a drug that usually dissipates in minutes lingered for hours. He is awake now, thank God. but now we are investigating why that happened. And I say we because the doctor thinks it is an hereditary deficiency, so tomorrow I go off to be tested... strange... I am also going to get a shingle's shot, because our insurance will cover it and it will reduce the probability to get shingles by 50%. My dad got them and was miserable for weeks, so I think this is worth a shot, literally.

So, many, many moons ago I used to post on this thread and I thought it was time to return to the forums. Especially, as I missed this thread and I am looking to get back into the forums.

So here is a bit of an update. I have lost quite a bit of weight over the last month (but not in a good way) which I want to keep off and continue to lose more. However, I have made the decision this is going to be a slow loss, as I am putting myself at 0.5lbs per week loss. I also am having to go back to basics for my exercising as I have been unable to exercise for over 2 months.

The reason for the absence and the (non-good) weight loss was due to illness and hospitalisation. However, the hospital stay was beneficial as they identified that I have Crohn's Disease which I am now in treatment for...especially as originally I was referred as an outpatient (which wasn't going to be until the 30th September...so hospitalisation was good in a weird way).

So with the diagnosis I have decided for the slow loss, especially as current treatment includes steriods which is increasing my appetite. Ok, so this is my update and why I am back.

So on with the thread updates...

GOALS and IDEAS for daily posts (Not mandatory)

Tuesday - Goals (do you have any Goals you want to update us?): So my goal, is to get my calorie intake back under control.

Here’s the JULY CHALLENGE: (I know I am a bit late)

    The July Challenges:

    1. Lose 4 Pounds this month. - done from the Crohns

    2. Drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. - one of the few healthy things I regularly do anyhow.

    3. Try a new recipe this month and share it with the group - we'll see if I get the chance

    So hello everyone.

@Robin -- So sorry to hear of your break-up and car troubles. {{Hugs}} You've been doing so fantastically lately.... I hope you won't let this derail you and will instead channel your frustration/heartbreak energy into the squats and arm work-outs. Perhaps? :flowerforyou:
@Karen -- sounds like an incredible adventure you are having! Glad you made it to the Tour!
@Kris -- Dr. McHottyPants went to the specialist with you? Wow! He is invested in your success! I know you will work very hard to get this figured out so he will be proud / feel successful. Glad you're getting meds to bring the levels down, end these darn gout flares, and allow you to eat in the way that has worked for you.
@Kelley -- were you #3 in your local gym's spring weight loss challenge? That's crazy impressive, especially since you were struggling with being benched from so many of your workout routines! I know you can win this one! :drinker: But I fear I will have to step up my steps to keep pace with you.
@Toots -- Plus, good luck with your deadlines!!!
    @Anna -- Have a great vacation!!!
@Tom & Tammy -- I have been hanging out just a few pounds shy of the 250s for several weeks and it's driving me batty too! :grumble: Let's all get to the next milestone together, soon!!!!
@Cath and Kaye -- So sorry to hear of the tragic losses of such wonderful young people! My thoughts are with their families and communities.
@Angelika -- How did the interview go? Plus, yes, get the shot. Shingles is horrible!!!! :explode:
@CelticHippo -- Good to see you again and I'm glad they got your diagnosis figured out so you can get back into your routine.

Well, my river trip was a success! We set the goal low (only planned to paddle about 7.5 miles in about 8 hours on the river, with an overnight at the campground around mile 2. We ended up going more like 10 miles, because we went a mile or so past camp the first day, and had to turn around and go back up-river. Oops. The deer flies were horrible, biting us a lot, so we retreated to our tents after dinner. Still had a good time, and my friends are up for another challenge, since this one went well! We were all pretty amazed (and a little disappointed) by how quickly we reached the end point. Over the weekend, my sister-in-law and youngest niece visited, on their way from home in Ohio to camp drop-off. In a couple weeks, my sister-in-law will be back with the older niece for a week, prior to Mom's weekend at camp. It's nice to spend time with them, even if it throws off my routine. I'm headed to Oregon in a couple days, to visit my mom, aunt, cousins, and dad. Was going with my brother to visit Dad on the PCT in Northern California in a couple weeks, but he broke a bone in his foot, so his hike is over. Thankfully, we were able to change the ticket, so I can still give him a big hug! He's already planning his return to the trail next year.

Tuesday Goals: Getting through this week until vacation starts on Friday. I'm really going to use my vacation time to regroup and refocus. I know what I need to do and need to finally make the commitment.

@Beth - Congrats on the river trip. It sounds like you had a really nice time minus the deer flies. Yuck!
@Karen - Thanks for the update! It sounds like your having a wonderful time. I know how much you were looking forward to the Tour and it sounds like a huge success. No worries on the blip on the scale. It will be back down in no time.
@Kris - My BIL has gout and I know how painful it can be. Hope the meds help and get you back on a regular schedule.
@Kelley - You've got this!! I have no doubt you can take this challenge. When you set your mind to something, I know you are so dedicated. I can't wait to follow your progress.
@Angelika - Glad your brothers surgery came out OK, but a little scary on his reaction. I know my father has had issues with anesthesia. Luckily, I haven't had any major surgery (minus child birth and a tumor - a little major), but I know I have to let them know about his condition. Keep us posted on your results. Any update on your hubby? I figured you would share it with us.
@Cath - I can't even imagine. I have an 11-year old son and just could not fathom something so tragic. My thoughts and prayers are with this family, friends and the community as they have to handle a young boy leaving this earth too soon.
@Kaye - The same goes with this child as well. I don't care how old they are. It's just a tragedy when we lose a child.
@CelticHippo - It's good to see you again. Welcome back and sorry to hear about your hospitalization and diagnosis. At least you know what it is now and can move forward with treatment. Thoughts to you!!

Karen glad you saw the Tour and had a great time. The sprint point must have been very exciting.
Cath and Kaye- Sorry to hear about the loss of the children. It is very sad when kids that age die. Wishing you both peace during this time.
Celetic- Welcome Back. Sorry to hear about the Chron's disease but I know that diet can help with that as well.
Angelica- Glad your brother's surgery went well. Hope he has a speedy recovery.
Kris- Glad to know that your doc went with you that is awesome in this day and age. Now that you know the problem at least you focus on the recovery to reduce further flare ups.
Beth- Glad your adventure was successful and fun except for the flies. Looking forward to hearing about more of your adventures.
Kelly-I know you will kick butt in that weight loss challenge so go for the gold.
Tom and Cathy, Beth- I have also been hanging out around the 200's mark and itching to get below that number for months now. I just keep plowing along hoping it will go down. Like time I may need to change my eating habits.
vertigo-The 5K prep that I am doing is under the guidance of my trainer. She told me that I was beyond the couch to 5K program that I was going to use. Right now I typically do running drills at least 1x a week, then run 1 x a week with her. Plus I swim and bike as well. It seems to be working since I can run 1.5 miles straight. Thursday we are heading for 1 and 3/4 miles straight. I think I should be able to accomplish this goal. I have not decided on my first race yet but am toying with the idea of doing a 2 mile fun run/walk on August 17 then a 5K in September in Stevensville.

Well today I went to look for a bike and think I found one that I liked. It is the Giant brand of bikes. It would be a step up from the entry level bike with several upgrades. My trainer says they are cheap bikes but I can't justify $650.00 as cheap, the road bike is over $1,000. I will talk with her more Thursday about the bikes and why she recommends Trek. I am almost scared to see the cost of those bikes. The bike shop has several female bikes on order but I will email them and see if he has any Trek bikes for me to consider.

Goal- To stop eating ice cream at night. I have been getting into this bad habit of eating ice cream about 8:30pm instead of just saying no to it. I know a treat once in a while won't kill me but I still need to refrain from making this a nightly habit.

    e Goals 7-21 to 7-27
Sunday- Bike- weather permitting (could be storms tonight/tomorrow- hope it breaks the heat)
    Monday- Trainer 5K DONE
Tuesday- Rest or gym GYM DONE cardio (spin bike and ARC trainer)
    Wednesday- Rest
Thursday- Trainer - may climb in the evening as well with a friend.
    Friday- Rock climbing
    Saturday- Swim (I hope)

machbeth and susan said everything to almost everyone that I wanted to say and I echo their sentiments and appreciate their efforts in writing them out - as I am loafing about and feeling sorry for myself a bit much these past few days - too much so I should say. I have to admit I have not exercised, and had to deal with the ex BF coming over today to install shelves for me, then a very mature discussion of our friendship surviving this. Sigh. Sorry, TMI. Again at age 62, this is what we do, we value friendships and strive to find ways to salvage them!

Hi y'all! Happy Tuesday! Started a new blood pressure med and it's kind of draining me, but I wanted to let you all know that I am thinking of you! I made a commitment to myself to read and post every day and as always, you all inspire me to keep pushing forward. :) I want to respond to some personals, but am afraid I will have to catch up on that tomorrow.

Hugs to you all and drink up! Have a nice tall glass of water, on me :drinker:

CathEsh - I'm so sorry to hear about your student. :( That is terrible news. Teachers get so close to their students too, I can't even imagine.

lmackbethl - I like your picture! Makes me want to go swimming!

RobinsEgg - Your a brave one Robin. Hope you get some exercise in this week maybe those endorphins will help bring your mood up.

    Tuesday - Goals -

Sticking to the basics still. I want to stay under calories all this week and throughout the weekend! (not going anywhere so this SHOULD NOT be an issue...but we'll see). Also drink more water and hopefully add in some exercise.

I do have some weight loss goals, which are to be at 265lbs by August 12th. This is the end of 3 out of 4 of the dietbets (www.dietbet.com/) I'm currently in. I just added on another one today (I think I'm addicted...substitute one addiction for another!). The pot for the bet I joined today is $23,775!! I couldn't resist joining. Though the way the website works you never win very much. Usually double your money if you make your goal because the pot is split between EVERYONE who makes their weight loss goal after 4 weeks. But still when you see so much money its like...maybe I'll win lots this time! haha...gets me every time....

Hope you all have a good week!

    Hi again-
For some reason I'm an early riser in Zurich--2nd day in a row I've woken at 6:30 feeling refreshed and ready to start my day.

Thanks for all of the well wishes for my trip--it's still going wonderfully. Tuesday we went to Bern which is the capital. It was pretty, but there was a lot of construction on the streets which made it a bit hard to navigate. It's certainly not as gorgeous as the Locarno area, but worth seeing. Today (Wednesday) we are going to Luzern--the forecast is for rain in the afternoon so we will try to get an early start.

Also, thanks for all of the support about the weight gain while vacationing. I was thinking at least some of the gain was water and last night I got confirmation of that. As we were walking up the stairs to the apt. at the end of the day, Amy said my left ankle looked swollen. A bit later when I took my shoes off, I noticed that foot looked all puffy and "square"--like all of the curves were gone b/c of water retention. The other foot was also a bit swollen, but not as bad. Anyway, I made sure to drink a lot of water last night and the swelling is gone this morning. I think I mentioned in my last post that it's really hard to stay hydrated with all of the walking in the heat--guess I will just have to try harder. :ohwell:

@angelika--get the shingles shot!! I got shingles when I was just 30 years old and it was THE MOST PAINFUL experience ever!!! It was also very scary b/c it's so rare in young people--doctor did all sorts of tests to make sure I didn't have HIV or leukemia or something. In the end, he decided it was probably a result of being on keflex (sp?) after cutting my fingers and needing 17 stitches--apparently really strong antibiotics can suppress your immune system's ability to fight viruses.

@anna--where on Lake Michigan is your vacation?

@cath--so sorry for the loss of your student. My 2nd year teaching I lost a student to a freak accident--he was a freshman so only 14 years old. It's so hard to lose anyone, but especially kids.

@laurie--one reason I don't want to take up cycling as a hobby is the cost of the cycles. I really love the stationary bike at the gym, and we live near a wonderful bike path, but I just can't fork over thousands for a bike. I'll stick with hundreds for my running shoes--at least for now.

    @celtic--welcome back!:flowerforyou:

I would do more personals, but I'm on my friends' computer and don't want to monopolize it. Will catch up with everyone in a few days.

Hi...I have been enjoying reading this thread and all the positive support everyone gives. I have been staying under my calories for the most part except over the weekend which was birthday celebrations for me and daughters. For the Tuesday goals I can say that I met one goal which was to swim one mile of laps. Daughter and I did Saturday and Sunday. Needless to say I was extremely sore yesterday! I guess a new goal could be to speed the swimming up...I seem to have forgotten the correct breathing technique so that slows me down! My long term goal is my daughter's and I are hiking some of the grand canyon next spring (not all the way down just a mile and a half or so) and this kind of kick started all of us to get in shape and me to realize I have to lose a lot of weight. Hope all have a good week!

@skinnyjeans- it's an hour south of Traverse City, MI. It's beautiful up there. My mom's family has spent a week every summer up there since before my mom was born! This year is going to be hard though. We lost my grandma at 68 last August and this will be the first trip with out her.

AFM- It is a gorgeous morning today! The sun is shining and it's nice and cool out! <3 Scrambled eggs and salsa are done for breakfast and I'm enjoying my iced coffee before working out this morning, then shower, wake up my sleepy head daughter and take her to her Grandma so I can get to a meeting at school.

    Have a great day everyone!

    Happy Hump Day!

@Beth & Tom~You probably gained some ground with steps yesterday, my Fitbit went all wonky. It never reset from the night before, it was about 6 hours behind until I was able to sync it last night – I think all is back to normal this morning.

@Beth~So glad the kayaking trip went so well this time around. Enjoy your trip to Oregon and your family.

@Laurie~I think doing a 2-mile fun run before your 5k is excellent prep, you’ll kind of know what to expect and have an idea on your pace. Giving you time to improve your time (if you want) before your official 5k. I was looking at bikes last year and found that Trek is definitely top of the line, they can be expensive – I think the model (road bike) I was looking at was around $800, still high dollar.

@Robin~I know your emotional and sad right now, try and move a little – it boosts serotonin which may lift you up emotionally a little. {{{hugs}}} :flowerforyou:

@Angelika~I recommend you get the shingles vaccine as well. I got shingles when I was around 40, I was miserable – doc said mine broke out mostly due to stress.

@Ronni~Welcome. When I returned to swimming after a long absence, I think remembering the breathing technique for certain strokes held be back for a while – I seemed to be the slowest swimmer in the pool. Once I got breathing down and back into a rhythm the laps got easier and faster.

@NeuroticVirgo~I’m a terrible sleeper, so can relate – hope you were able to get some ZZZ’s.

@Susan~Just a couple of more days then it’s time to play, relax and regroup! I hope you and Cyrus have a fabulous vacation! :glasses:

@Nicole~I thought about you yesterday afternoon, I hope your interview went well.

Welcome to the other newlings that stopped by.

Wednesday Wish~Thanks for the support with this weight loss challenge. My wish is that I actually win this thing – maybe the 3rd time is the charm? I’m getting ready to change my ticker to reflect a goal I’m setting for myself.

    Exercise Goals:

    Sunday~Training DONE!
    Monday~Rest Day DONE!
Tuesday~None, worked late (budget is due July 31st - ack! :explode:)
Wednesday~No trainer today, he’s on vacay so weights on my own.
    Thursday~Cardio at Gym
    Friday~Rest Day - going shopping.
    Saturday~HIIT on Elliptical at Gym

    Have a great day.

@Kris~I’m sorry you had another gout attack, I know it’s painful so I hope the hot/cold packs brings you some relief. My administrator gets those attacks anytime he goes on a steak binge – he’s always out a couple of days when that happens. Good luck with the nephrologist today.

Thanks! I'm back. He isn't as worried about my numbers as my regular doctor is. It was a LONG appointment 'cause my regular doc met me there and went in with me (after the urine test of course  ).

THey want to do an ultra sound to be sure my little kidneys aren't shriveling up from lack of blood but if that pans out OK then my numbers are up because of my meds which I take because of the Fibromuscular dysplasia (they ruled out Renal Artery Stenosis... same end result, just not MY fault if it's FMD). So it's all a vicious circle... the FMD is giving me high blood pressure and the meds are messing up my kidney functions... blech.

We talked about the surgery to fix the FMD but this Dr tells me that it's VERY invasive, painful, and the possibility of complications is so high that he'd rather we c ontinue on fixing things through diet.. which means I'm back to behaving.

They ARE putting me on meds to bring down my uric acid levels so hopefully that means no more gout, I just have to wait until this flare passes and then I can start taking it. I also can start eating meat again once a day, I just have to give the meds a chance to bring down my UA levels first. So I see a steak in my future next month!

Nice that your regular physician met you there. Its refreshing, too, that a doc doesn't want to push any kind of surgery and would rather take a therapeutic route. I hope the gouts meds work and the ultrasound results are favorable. I know you're looking forward to that steak!

:embarassed: Hi all! Oh I am so behind! I need to remember this thread grows so quickly! I will work on keeping up- so as for today I wont reply to many people.. sorry.

    Happy HUMP DAY!

Wednesday Wish- I wish I could be on vacation forever (still in a haze from my travels  ) I also am wishing my boyfriend gets motivated. I know its silly to worry about others so much because it doesnt change anything- but I cannot help it. Him and I have so much fun when we do things together- the gym is actually fun! He also thinks so, but he never makes time to go because his job wears him out. I hope someday he makes more time to go. Until then- I will just keep asking him if he wants to go with me when I go

Ok- well I have only a few more days left at my job and then I transfer to a dif. department. Its scary and new and exciting but Iam ready! I have worked really hard to get this job, so its very rewarding now that its actually happening. I will miss all my friends at my current job.... I am a little worried about the stress of a new job. I really need to focus on my new healthy habits and not fall back into old ways because of stress. I have worked so hard to loose this weight- and I cant forget that when times get tough.

Sadly, hubby did not get the outcome he was hoping for and he is struggling with it a bit. I have had my dreams crushed in the past so I understand where he is coming from and I know he will bounce back. I woke up early this morning, have yet to go to the doctor. My brother says the bulk of the pain is gone and he thinks the "tingling" is getting better so we are hopeful. One of the mainstay members of the Petanque club died suddenly this week. It just seems like this is a season of change... hurray for the new Royal Baby that is something fun to think about. My Wednesday wish is that all the vacations that are in progress or planned will be everything hoped for and will leave the participants rested and happy.

Wednesday wish - that my gout flare heals FAST so that I can get on those meds and get back to eating meat! It's not as painful today and I was able to go to work, but I'm hobbling pretty slowly. LOL. Taking my shoe on or off is... well it's just horrible. It brings out the sweats, tears, and much cursing.

@CathEsh - I'm so very sorry to hear about the young student. It's always such a tragedy when a young life is lost.
@ Toots - LMAO! A werewolf.... it wouldn't shock me to if there were such secrets hiding in the royal family.
@Angelika - How scary for your and your family about your brother...thank goodness you know this is a possibility in case you ever have to have anethesia! Yes, I agree with getting the shingles shot... it looks like something ot avoid at all costs!
@Celtic Hippo - Welcome back!! I'm so sorry about the diagnosis, but glad you got diagnosed and can move on now!
@MacBeth - He did go with me, his office is in the building next door so he walked over for my appointment. He is very invested in my health, I feel blessed that I've got such a caring Doctor and am determined not to let him down. Since I'm his first real patient ever, I want it to be a positive experience for him as well as for me. Your river trip sounds so exciting! I always think I'd LOVE to try camping (not to mention the other amazing outdoor activities you do). I don't know how I'd do 'roughing it' though.
@Karen - I'm glad ot hear your having so much fun! This sounds like the trip of a lifetime, yay for yoU!
@Susan - I hope you have such a great time on your vacation! I know how hard you work and how stressed you get. Just use this time to relax, re group and take care of YOU!
@Robin - You're a better woman than I am. I was NOT able to hold onto the relationship with my faux beau. It was just too painful to hear/watch him talk about moving on, marriage, and kids when that is what *I* wanted with him. The extent of our friendship has been his occasional 'likes' and comments on my FB statuses. He seems to have very little interest in my life now a days. I hope you guys can remain the best of friends and you pain eases up.
@Doing this - WElcome, this is a wonderful group of amazing and loving people. You won't find better support or better 'vibes' anywhere on MFP!
@NV - Wowza, good luck on being part of the group that makes taht goal... for that amount of cash I might be mailing everyone else a cheesecake once a month! :blushing:
@kAH - I really AM looking forward to that freaking steak. I've already planned that meal! Going to go easy the rest of the day so I can add baked potato with sour cream. Then top that steak with french fried onions with sauteed mushrooms! NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM!

actually, now that you say that i have a vague memory of one of the Dr. Who plotlines being that Queen Victoria was either a vampire or a werewolf. Can't remember which. Maybe it was true...
