  • I live in Alaska. For those who aren't familiar with AK, it's HUGE, and legal to carry loaded concealed weapons at all times...no permit necessary. Need less to say, I walk with a .38 or a .45 strapped to my hip. AK is also known for meth heads and bears. :) It's not always comfortable, but neither is being attacked by a 2 legged or a 4 legged animal.

You're gonna need to throw a whole lot of lead down range to stop a bear. I'd go with a bazooka to be on the safe side.
  • Gotta tell ya... I am glad I live in Canada.......no guns ....phew!!!!!

Yeah, luckily your government doesn't sell millions of dollars of military grade hardware to drug cartels in Mexico.

I would rather carry pepper spray (mace) than a gun or knife while working out or jogging. My reason is that IF anything were to happen, I would rather spray the person attacking me than shoot them or stab them. Any of these weapons can also be used on you if they are able to get them away from you & I would rather be maced than shot or stabbed.
  • What about pepper spray or a tazer? I think those would be simpler and less deadly.

My LC9 is my running partner. I carry concealed under my left arm (clip holster to side of sports bra). I prefer the cross draw and it is usually out of the way as my arms are slightly raised when running. There are some belly band type holsters that also work well. Gotta do what works for you. All hail the 2nd Amendment! :))

    You are awesome!
  • knife-wrench, it's practical and safe.

Guns don't make you safe. If guns make you safe, then the USA must be the safest place on Earth.

It just means if you get mugged, someone has to die - probably you, I might add, unless you're the kind of person that has no problem killing another human being.

I am not a "gun" person so my answer is not to carry one. If my neighboorhood becomes unsafe and I fear walking or running guess I will invest in a Pitbull.

Thank God I don't live in America, is all I can say.
    Sorry but true.
  • I am living alone in the university area, mistly open field. Often I return home late so I carry a pepper spray and just keep my eyes open. I don't like guns. And here unless you are a guard or something you can't even carry one.

If I needed a gun or knife to run outdoors, guess what I wouldn't run outdoors. I'm American and I don't get this and so I have to stand with Europeans and Canadians on this one. . I'm from New York City, Brooklyn at that and I used to live in the projects. I used to run around the projects and never once thought about having a weapon. Maybe you wouldn't need a weapon if you just used common sense when out on a trail or jogging. Avoid desolate areas, run in the daylight, keep your IPOD low enough where you can hear what's going on around you and know your surroundings. That has never failed me. Even coming from a large city where there have been incidents of joggers attacked, in most incidents common sense would have prevented it. Re gentrification is big in NY right now, In some of the city's up and coming communities, I can't tell you how many times I have seen some of the well to do yuppies who have moved into predominantly minority neighborhoods jogging late at night with IPODS blasting. I almost want to knock them in the head to just to tell them to learn some street smarts.

WOW is all i can say to this!! This has to be the most ridiculous post i have ever read!

Running with guns and knives? Mate.....i dont care how busy and hectic your life is with your kids...there is a way to solve this. ERRRR dont go running in the dark in the rough areas. Get a gym membership like normal people.

And to all you people posting actual suggestions for seriously concealing a weapon.... ...feeding the problem!!

Thank God I live in NZ.
  • Thanks for posting. I've been considering this as well for a very similar reason. This has been quite knowledgeable and also entertaining for this night shifter, lol!! I workout after I put my kids to bed, and before I come to work, and it's dark out. Thanks for all the great advice. Proud to be an American where I can choose to carry or not!!!
Oh, and let's not forget that the gun itself is not dangerous, but rather the person behind it. If the intentions are criminal the person will find a way to get a gun!!
Guns aren't legal there, but running nude is ok? *gasp!
    Right!!
Take a look a Chicago it is one of the most violent cities in the world and it has the most strict gun laws in America conversely Texas has an extremely low crime [rate] and some of the most liberal gun laws.
Never had nearly the problems in TX as I do in SC!!
  • So sorry you even have that option...Thank god I live in New Zealand!

I live in Canada. That stuff doesn't happen here. I'd be more worried about being run down by someone talking on their cell phone.

I live in Australia and it's pretty safe here, plus it's a lot harder to get a gun license here than it is in USA I think. Over here hardly anyone owns a gun!
  • Glad I live in Holland...

I've never ever heard of anyone running with knives or guns. I have trouble finding a place to put my iPhone in, let alone a gun. Besides, seing me run probably scares the **** out of people  .

Oww.. haha I just got censored for writing ****. Onother reason why Holland isn't such a bad place  .
  • For the Canadians and Europeans who cannot fathom running with a gun...

I live in the country. My neighbor is 1.5 miles away. I have seen alligator on the road, had dogs attacked by bobcats, and cattle dragged off by black bear. I have a 4 year old that sometimes runs with me. What would you suggest I carry? A knife? A taser? I don't want to give these things the opportunity to get that close.

    Don't judge.

I'd like to know which part of the US has alligators, bobcats and black bear roaming the same countryside (and joggers with machetes, guns and pepper spray)....so i can never go there. cheers.

    I'd suggest Krav Maga

Gun technique is basically grab gun pushing to left. Twist back to break nasty mans finger. Punch square to face. Elbow on way back then for good measure stamp on knees to break. In close hand to hand weapons are a disadvantage.

No one gets killed - just maimed

Sorry if this has already been discussed but I hate these topics when they turn from advice to let us debate the politics of guns.
As someone who runs with a gun {professionally and recreationally} it sucks to have too, but you do what you gotta do. I did see that the .380 was discussed and this is my choice when it comes to carry while doing recreation. It is light; compact and easily concealed I have also carried several Derringers’ slight disadvantage is that they are two shot and a brass knuckle. The lighter and smaller the gun, the better for comfort and conceal ability. I am unsure what you have in your arsenal, fanny packs as was stated may make you look like a “dork”, but invest in a good holster fanny pack and you will actually blend into the fitness crowd. A friend of mine uses a hydration waist pack with a holster he had customized into it. I have issues with recreation running and ankle holsters or T-shirt and unless you plan on always having a jacket on shoulder holsters’ are going to be confining.
So here is me; I carry a Kel-Tec .380 while out walking and running, self protection from humans and animals. I would not say I live in a dangerous area, I just have a job that causes some people not to like me so much.

To the person who sometimes runs with a 4 year old.... really? Your 4 year old runs with you? I dont believe that, i mean, how on earth would you keep up?

But on the advice note, id take a knife with you. That way if an alligator happens to cross your path you cut that b**ch up and show it whos boss. Not only are you getting rid of the danger of the alligator your setting your child a wonderful example!!!!!!

However, it's generally not the LEGAL gun owners you have to worry about, it's the criminals that obtain their guns ILLEGALLY that are generally the problem.

Uhm.. Even if I am a certified instructor of krav I would just be really aware of guns and especially knives... if someone wants your money or anything replaceable just give him/her all she wants.
If someone wants you dead.. simply he will pull the trigger from 3 mt and not even getting near to you.
If your life is in danger is a pretty extreme situation and you have to do your best to return home. But seriously.. I don't believe we are in the middle of a war. At least I hope.
The best thing is just prevention, a little bit of attention to your surroundings. Usually aggressors are going for "prays" not for people that are aware of what is happening around them. It is just a matter of opportunity. And it is just a matter of brain not to be hurt for 10 bucks or an Ipod...
