Embarrassed to go jogging because of pervs.

When you get older it is nice to be noticed, but the Op is a teenager. I'm sure you remember how overwhelming the amount of "attention" is as a teenager.
BP, I am not trying to make a hobby out of taking an opposing stance as you. In this case, my experience as a teenager was much different. There is a main road where I grew up where the teenage girls liked to walk in order to get attention. If you honked, they smiled and waved. And I met a couple of my past girlfriends that way. Pull over, exchange numbers, etc.
I just don't view this is a big epidemic. The issue is with the OP's self esteem. Not with guy's honking their horn.
I can see it being an issue with the Op's self esteem also. She has the feelings and I hope she can find a way to work past them and not have it hold her back. I think that self defense would help with her comfort and confidence, even if she (hopefully) never has to use it.
I agree with you. I saw a post earlier where someone questioned how dad's would feel about this happening to their daughters. I would tell my daughter if someone honks at her, to take it as a compliment. If someone says something crude, just ignore it and continue her jog. If someone stops to harrass her, use whatever martial arts move she deems appropriate.
My first reaction to the thread was that it was absurd and ridiculous. But, then I saw that she is a teenager.0 -
wow... started at page one... scared to run because someone may whistle... to this page... where attractive female will be yanked off the path and gang raped. In a van no less. WOW
Taking everything too literally much?
No one is suggesting that someone whistling at you automatically means you're going to be dragged off the street and gang raped.
That's a response to a guy who thinks that because he isn't creeped out by women heckling him, that all women should be feeling the same sense of safety and write it off.0 -
I've been cat called by a group of women before. They weren't at a construction site they were in a limo celebrating something I can only assume to be a bachelorette party. So it really does go both ways. This isn't a male vs. female thing.
Also since you brought up entitlement what makes you the voice for all other women?
Oh please.
A guy being catcalled by a group of women has 100% never had to worry about those women dragging him off the street, throwing him into a van and gang raping him.
No man has ever had to fear for his safety by women shouting something at him in the street. Unless she was armed, or trying to drive over him, which is far less likely.
:huh:0 -
If I was afraid to go outside because someone ogled my goods, I'd never leave the house. Just be smart about where and when you exercise and if you're going alone, let someone know where you're going and when you'll be back. If you're really worried, take the following precautions that you're comfortable with: a dog, a can of pepper spray, a gun (with proper permits, use knowledge etc), a running buddy or whatever else you feel you need.0

That IS what you suggested though. In your original comment you said 'no man has ever feared getting dragged off into a hite van and getting gang raped' therefore implying that because a woman has been cat called the next step is to kidnap and gang rape her.
Unless you're admitting that, that would indeed be an irrational fear?0 -

why yes, I often do take things literally.
oh wait? was that not a literal question? perhaps it was rhetorical and I wasn't supposed to answer it.
oh dear, what should I do?
/sarcasm
with all due respect, I was referring to the fact that the forums tend to escalate from the common to the dramatic in a heartbeat. THAT was what I was referring to in my comment... going from whistle to rape in 8 pages.

Keep at it, ignore them, buy an ipod or something. I'd like to see more women getting in shape. Not saying I'd honk, but a woman taking care of her body shouldn't be messed with.0

mp3 player, phone or ipod and earbuds, blast the music and you wont even hear those a**holes! :laugh:0

Whaaatt? I run outside for the pervs! Let them try to take me... Take a self defense class and run like the wind woman.0

I suppose I asked for that by over generalizing. Message received, Captain Literal.0 -

I'm saying that it HAS happened to many women, therefore it's a fear we need to keep in mind. An irrational fear is being fearful of something that could or would never happen.
Did you just not read the posts some women have made on this very thread of having guys in cars chase them, or try to grab them?0 -
I'd quite like to start running outside, but I'd have to go on busy roads with other people and cars. I'm scared that people are going to take the piss. I already get honked at by pervy old men and stuff randomly while walking sometimes. Ugh, it just creeps me out and makes me angry. Unless I wake up super early and go while not many people are around I don't see a way to avoid this... help!
There is nothing pervy about someone honking a horn at you. Aside from that most people don't pay any attention to joggers so i wouldnt worry.
Wow, thanks for mansplaining. I find it pervy.0 -

Fact. Women who walk around fearful of being raped are typically the victims of rape. The vast majority of men have no interest in raping you. A vast minority of men rape women because they are cowardly sickos who are incapable of relationships.
Stop being afraid, woman up, get strong, and dare a man to approach you via your confidence and behaviors.0 -

I've never been raped, because I'm careful. Or maybe just lucky.
The majority of my friends however, have been. and yes, the majority. like 80 percent.
I've heard the statistic is 1 in every 4 women have been raped. However I think the majority of them were raped by friends or family rather than strangers.
still though.0 -
It sucks, but I just tune it out! You can't avoid the gawkers or the whistlers, and so I just ignore it and go on my marry way0

My sister will only run in the dark because she thinks people are going to stare at her. I'm trying to convince her that people may look, but that's usually the extent of it because they're uh...I-dunno... going about their own lives and not all that interested in what she's doing. Lol! Sounds like you're using it as an excuse not to do it. If you want to run, run. Who cares if someone looks at you?0 -

Personally I highly doubt that figure is even close. Also heard that 1 in 4 children in the US goes to bed hungry, which is crap. Statistics are used every day to sell something.
Not saying its not an issue at all...just that 25% is BS (is my opinion). Do you know 25% of your friends who have been raped? Really?0 -

Actually I know more. Gotta love how men always call BS on this, do some research.0 -
I don't have that problem being way out in the country I have no neighbors but when I did live more in the city and some pervs did that I just said excuse me I have 3 step- brothers that would beat you up they are 6ft tall do you really want to do that.0

That's great for you. My subjective opinion is that men shouldn't tell women what is or isn't offensive to women.0 -
1 in 4? I do not believe that. If it's real then yes, the rape is by men in their family or people they know.
Or worse, 1 in 4 cry rape after having consentual sex with a man who does not call them the next day, or ever again. I know plenty of those girls, and it diminishes the real crime when it happens to real victims.0 -
Make sure you run where there are plenty of people. Wear headphones (maybe only keep one plug in one ear so you can stay alert). Get some running pants with pockets. I have some with a pocket in the back. That's where I keep my pepper spray.0

I really am shocked to hear such ignorance coming out of a woman's mouth...very sad that so many people who have no knowledge of this stuff just presume whatever they want with zero evidence to back it up. Lovely.0 -

Much more than 25 % of my friends have been raped.
See the above quoted post.0 -

I do have personal knowledge. Do you?
I will not derail this thread further, but if 25% of the women you know have been forcibly raped, you should probably get to know different types of women.0 -

Actually, the reason why men rape is because of an imagined wrong by that woman or all women, or because they are sadists who like the feeling of power. A lot of the time they are in a relationship or married.
There is no woman who is safe from rape no matter how confident or aware of her surroundings she may or may not be.0
