    My $0.02: It was you who said that you have "gained 10 lbs" in the last 6 months. For sure that is FAT gained. (Maybe 1 lb of muscle gained....if you are a newbie weight-lifter....maybe only 0.5 lbs of muscle gained, if you have been weight-training for some time...)

    I think most people OVERestimate their calorie burn (by a TON) and UNDERestimate their calorie intake (also by a LOT).

    To clearly lose the fat, you could measure and weigh your food (to have a decent idea of intake) - and I usually apply a 10% - 15% margin for "error".

    And, for me, I do NOT eat back "exercise calories" because there is no sure-fire way to know what those "burned" calories are.

    When I consistently do the above things - I lose scale weight, which is FAT (because I continue to lift heavy weights throughout a "cut").

    So, that is what works for me.

    I agree with beeps! it really all starts with your diet and exercise is the icing on the cake. I thought I could eat my exercise calories back for a long time and it left me with 20lbs to lose.....no more eating those back!

    I hit a wall yesterday while doing my treadmill run. I intended to do 25 mins but ended up having to walk at 10 mins. After four mins, I started doing 2min intervals for five sets.

    What kind of foods do you guys eat to keep the calories so low but not be starving all the time? I'm eating oatmeal, nuts, dried fruit, quinoa, homemade low cal/fat muffins or bars and then just whatever I make for the kids for dinner and I'm trying to keep to either greek yogurt or nuts for a snack in the evening.

    I eat protein and veggies, almost exclusively, when I am "cutting". A little bit of fat (to help feel satiated).

    For me, if I cease ingesting "white foods" and fruit, I can usually keep my calories low enough to lose the bodyfat.

    Sucks, but it is what it is.

    If I had SHUT my piehole to begin with, I wouldn't NEED to lose the bodyfat. So, I kind of look at it like a bank account....by eating too much I simply "mortgaged" my future self and when I have a fat-debt to pay back, it's gonna be uncomfortable for awhile....

    I'm bulking so my food ramp is loaded and when I am cutting its pretty much the same foods (less bevies, more water) just in lesser quantities.

    I struggle with eating my workout calories back too. I never used to do that until I started on MFP and that was so much hype about it. I think as we get older it is almost impossible to eat them back and lose weight. It comes off too slow for us women as we get older and our metabolism slows down. I try to stay around the 1300 -1400 range if possible but if I am truly hunger and need something more I listen to my body and will eat something with protein. I am not lifting heavy like Beeps is on a regular basis but I am doing hard core cardio. I need to vamp up the lifting but have not got that down as a regular habit yet.

    When I really get results I am eating oatmeal, nuts, almond milk, chicken and lean meats, veggies (cannot get enough), natural peanut butter, apples, greek yogurt, eggs. I try to really watch the carbs even if they are whole wheat, they still cause me problems.

    Hi I'd like to join. I'm 42 years old and been on here since Jan. I've lost 6lb already of my 28 lb goal. I've let myself slip these past 5 years. Had a few injuries which has haltered my fitness regime.Looking at being really fit again and changing lots of my eating and drinking habits. A fresh start to my healthy lifestyle.

    Hey MLB, I recently joined our local gym. I was very athletic in my 20s & 30s, and already familiar with proper form & technique with free weights & various gym machines, BUT I couldn't figure out where to start when I returned. I had one session with a Personal Trainer who, after some testing, set up a 4 day per week strength training schedule for me. So it's mixed up. I can do it on my own. I love it and don't get bored. I just needed someone to tell me what to do LOL :p . I'm pretty good at following orders.

    I called to set up an appt with a personal trainer at my local gym. :) He won't really follow me, but will help to set up a program. Hoping I can get someone to go with me, as I am so unmotivated to go out in this freezing cold weather. I just want to drop my final 5-6 lbs and finally feel better about myself and my body. I really hate being so out of shape and deconditioned.

    This is for MBL512- I think that you should not try to go all out for a hard core exercises routine, but rather start with more gentle but consistent classes. Try gentle yoga, stretching, aqua aerobics if you can find it. Or fun Zumba or similar. If you have a community Ymca or other gym, start there. If do classes rather than relying on yourself to go solo. And I would search first for the right exercise classes and see who is taking them, maybe you know people already taking those classes, or just get to know them and take the opportunity to make new friends there. Don't complicated and double up the task by trying to talk friends into going to new exercise classes with you. They will become extra weight for you to carry. Just my two cents. Good luck. I used to hare exercise and in my 20's and 30's avoided it. It's tasked a long time, but now I exercise 4-6 x week and it is so important to me and my mental health. I particularly like spin class, hot yoga and a small group class with a trainer 3x week.

    Good Evening Cool Kids.

    My plan for the day was to run to town and do my shopping early, while it was still cold, then do a few more hours in the pine trees. So I skipped my AM cardio and lifting, thinking I would have another huge burn like yesterday. When I got back from town, there was a message from work, saying I had to come in. So no huge burn for me. Luckily I had ate pretty light.

    Speaking of eating light and not feeling hungry, when I was doing 5-2, I used stir-fry veggies and chicken breast or fish as my go to foods on low calorie days. Never got overly hungry.

    There is a new member of the extended Larro family. My neice out in Denver had a little boy yesterday. They named him Camden. Here is Avery with her newest little brother.

    Curious- I did join the biggest loser contest at work. It's not anything like the show- we do the initial weigh in and then we are on our own for workouts and eating until the final weigh-ins in April.     I took Jacob to see Hubby yesterday! He was so awesome! and had a great time visiting with his PawPaw! Hubby cried when we left, but my daughter-in-law will be back up that way in about a week and a half and will be taking the little guy for another visit.
    I did my biometric screening at work today. We have to do it every year for a discount on our health insurance, but this year it was basically manditory in order to be covered next year- even for spouses. Most of my numbers were very good. I am still not happy with my BMI or my weight. More reason to keep pressing on!

    Did not have to shovel again today- three days in a row with no shoveling- it's a miracle! That will probably end today though- There is a lake effect snow watch for my area starting tonight. Fortunately I don't live right on Lake Ontario- I am about 17 miles from the lake- they are supposed to get dumped on over the next few days.

    FEves, I thought you would give me the recipe for a magic potion!!!! :s But glad I asked because you reminded of everything I have done in the past that has worked for me. I just have to get my butt back in gear!!!! I have no problem exercising and I do like to lift heavy. My main problem is my diet!!! I do really well most times but I do succumb to peer pressure.

    Hi! This looks like "my" group! I'm 44, eat mostly clean and am trying to get fit again. I don't have a lot of weight to lose, just about 7 lbs to go to get to the weight I was 3 years ago, before my son got cancer. I went from marathon training to couch- & hospital-room, researching and care-giving. My son is becoming more independent again so I'm trying to get myself back in shape. I especially find itore important than ever to cook and eat clean because my son needs it, so bonus motivation there. I've signed up to run a marathon in October, trying to finally finish what I started three years ago. Very excited for new beginnings and meeting others with similar goals!

    I'm well over 40 at 57, but I've been inconsistent in maintaining myself over the years. Despite whatever slides I've had, I'm glad my active periods have kept my heart and muscles strong enough for another try to get to and stay at a healthy weight/fitness level. Now I'm really focused on what habits I need to develop to stay fit once I get to my weight goal. (and what old habits to lose).

    hewhoiscd: That's basically what I follow. I've lost 20 lbs in 2.5 months with 10 lbs to go. Good luck with your race.

    I don't post much on the forums but I'll make an exception in this case and do so.

    I'm in. I'm 48 and have been on MFP since I began my lifestyle change last August.

    Dropped about 44 lbs since joining and am now at maintenance. Lost the pounds with no fancy diet. Just logging and moving. Rowing/Walking/Running and a small dabble of weights - all from home.

    Happy Friday Cool Kids. Looking forward to a pretty busy weekend. Our team is finishing preparations for the Houston Rodeo cookoff next wee. That will be a caloric challenge for me to say the least. I know I will be doing lots of walking the three days or so of the cookoff, but need to make sure I eat right. Hard to turn down all that yummy barbeque!

    I am at doctor this morn for my annual physical. So, no workout for me.

    And, a house-full of company this weekend (hubby's dad + step-mom) with visits also planned with B-i-l, our eldest son and my godson.

    No workouts this weekend.

    I will flop on couch for Oscars.

    Been fighting vertigo the past week ... ruled out stroke &/or heart issues, now trying to get in with an ENT specialist (good luck, hope I still have a job! ) sooner rather than later ..... starting to get a little down & desperate the longer it goes ....

    I've never been a cool kid. Can I play?

    47 next month. Married, 6 kids (3 adult stepchildren, one adopted adult daughter, two teen age boys), two grand children, full time student, full time financial analyst. I had an accident a few years ago that led to 6 surgeries in 5 years and a weight gain of 30 pounds. Now, I am working it back off again.

    I would love more friends on MFP.

    Very interested; I'd like to be part of this very cool, very elite club. I have about 5 pounds left to hit my goal. I have teetered close to my goal and just not able to stay at or below it. These last 5 have been the most difficult.

    Hello everyone, it sounds like you all are doing good. I am still doing good. Have lost 14 lbs since Jan 4th. I am doing the elliptical for 30 minutes 6 days a week. Making much better choices eating and logging everything. Its a slow progress, haven't noticed in my clothes size yet, I think my pants were so tight I should of been in another size. Maybe a little more comfortable now. I am feeling really good and am very glad that the scale is moving down.
    Went snowmobiling a little while with my husband and it was so pretty out. Hope you all have a nice weekend.

    Just found this thread - I'm 44 and I've been overweight my whole life. I'm down about 50 pounds from my highest and could stand to lose 50+ more. I'm making mini-goals though so right now I want to be 180 (I'm at 213 presently). I've only been using MFP for a few weeks, it is helping a lot.

    Good Afternoon Cool Kids.

    I did my full AM cardio {including squats and push-ups} this morning for the first time since my back started acting up last week.

    I came into work a couple hours early. My boss's dad is having some trouble with dementia and she went to spend the afternoon with him. A couple of days ago he was missing and they were thinking about calling the Sheriffs Department when I got a call from the Sheriff here at work. Her dad had went to the jail and told them his best friend had been holding him hostage. {he can't remember any of it} So for now his truck is off limits to him. Her sister had stopped working and was staying with him, but he seemed to be doing real well, so she had recently gone back to work. Not sure what they are going to do if this episode continues.

    It's Friday, so here are the numbers for the week:

    20.8% Body Fat
    23.8 BMI
    170.6 Pounds

    At this point I'm thinking about changing my goals to .5 pounds gained per week and see if that will help me any. I've gave up on 176, so I'll set my new goal weight at 173. It's a prime number anyway.

    Hey furballs ... I haven't scrolled ahead to see what others have offered, but here are my thoughts.
    The nuts & dried fruits are pretty high in calories.
    If your greek yogurt is flavored, it's going to be high in sugar.
    Try cooked beans and whole fruit. Especially apples. Very filling due to pectin and full of fiber.
    I personally avoid oatmeal, muffins & bars due to the high carbs.
    "BAS" = Big *kitten* Salad. Lots of that. And by lots, I mean LOTS. Use seasoned rice vinegar for dressing if your calorie bank account runs low, otherwise add a little olive oil & lemon juice.
    Then there's the usual carrot, celery, jicama, radish, etc. snacks. Cut them up and keep them in a snap-tight or jar with a little seasoned rice vinegar for flavor.
    Sardines.
    Hard boiled eggs.
    Water.
