I thought maybe he just disliked being photographed and that was his camera face. Good thing I don't have a dog like that or I'd spend all my time shovelling treats and toys at him, thinking I needed to cheer him up. Smart tactic, Plankton!
oh, i tried! treats and toys, anything he wanted!
it wasn't until i got wolverine that i fully realized his "I AM YOUR ONLY DOG" complex. he constantly steals wolvie's treats and i feel terrible because he's gained an extra pound or two and nothing i do seems to make it better. i restricted treats so he can't gorge himself, so then instead he just inhales the regular food.
i will get him back to his sleek sexy self so help me god! LOL

I have no problem with the existence of this thread. I just stand by the belief that suggested reading (ie, stickies), should be educational and pertain to the topic of the forum. As far as fun items to give people a reason to return to the site, that's what Chit Chat is for. But that's just me, don't let me rain on your parade. Obviously this thread is popular, just not informative.

Sure, informative is a matter of opinion. And I also agree that knowledge is good, I seek out lots of it! I simply fail to see the value of directing members, often times who are new, who are seeking information and knowledge about General Diet and Weight Loss (the purpose of this particular sub-forum) to this particular thread. And thank you for making my point with examples of non-diet/weight loss things your learned from this thread.

There have been hundreds of diet/fitness/weight loss questions and tips posted throughout this thread, you just have to wade through 783 pages to find them. Several of us have learned a rather effective upper body workout right here.

Listen, we aren't suddenly convening before some sort of MFP Supreme Court (and you aren't some sort of Chief Judge (though you do appear to be embracing a role akin to that of a Prosecuting Attorney)), and we don't suddenly need to justify the actions of someone (let alone, someone who has nothing to do with this thread!) doing something we never requested in the first place (and, frankly, involves a reality some of us don't *want*) -- and so we shouldn't be expected to have you or anyone else 'set up kleig lights', and expect us to 'subject ourselves to interrogation' (as though you were some sort of self-appointed attorney, judge, and jury... or some such entity hellbent on seeing a perceived form of 'justice' done)...
If you don't want to participate in the thread, then please, by all means, move on...! -- that is, unless you need to rant about something (other than 'this', or 'us', that is), in which case you are welcome to rant away...!

Hi there aggressive one! I have no desire to see this thread removed, pretty sure I made that clear. But I stand by what I believe to be a valid point regarding MFP choosing this as a helpful thread within the context of the sub forum in which it exists. Not attacking the participants of this thread, not the purpose of this thread, simply stating that it's purpose isn't necessarily on point with the purpose of why a thread should be a sticky. Sorry you have such a personal attachment and felt offended as a result, but I prefer logic over emotion.

if you're struggling so much with the purpose of this thread, and can't see how it might help newbies who are normally ripped apart for the most simplest of questions elsewhere, that's on you, not us.
There's no struggle, the purpose of this thread is not currently related to General Diet and Weight Loss. Again, I have not said it serves no purpose, it just doesn't serve the purpose of this sub forum to the point of being a sticky. New members should have a central location, supported by MFP, to find valuable info to assist them in gaining the knowledge requires to successfully navigate through the contention that occurs in the forums. There are no questions in here that are being clarified, so I don't follow your argument of it being a safe haven for newbies. Is this designed to educate? I don't see it if it is. If you have a rational argument as to what this brings to newbies as far as helping them reach their fitness or weight goals, I'm all ears, but don't chastise me for making a valid comment that none have been able to debate within the context of my point.
Off the top of my head from just the past few weeks:
Binge eating related to stress, hormonal issues, depression, and death in the family
Overeating due to travel for work or vacation
Undereating due to underlying disordered behavior
Dealing with a family member who potentially has an eating disorder
How to handle food situations when you have out of town guests
Unlogged food, the potential psychological impact, and whether or not it's better to log it or ignore it
Workout schedule interruptions due to illness or injury
Advice for starting new workout routines or expanding existing ones
Recommendations comparing and contrasting different lifting programs
How to deal with alcohol in relation to eating and overeating
How to deal with alcohol addiction and its impact on health and weight
Exactly which of these is not relative to General Diet and Weight Loss?

Thank you for actually engaging, I appreciate a good debate, especially with one who cares. Do you feel that a single thread, addressing all of those topics, quite briefly, and scattered throughout 789 pages, is helpful to the average new member? I really am not picking a fight, and appreciate different points of view. Here's mine, in more detail, since a couple seem to either care, or are perturbed by my presence. And my confession, is that my point of view is from a former newbie, who came to this sight with many assumptions, unknowns, and misguided beliefs that I held to be true. It took me a long time to understand what people talk about, and fight about, in these forums. And longer still to piece together how that all applies to what I am trying to achieve. I simply want to see new members have an easier time than I did. So here is the picture, as it is in my head....
New member joins, hoping to lose weight and gain knowledge about how to reverse whatever caused them to be where they are today. They head to the forums, to read up on current discussions, since that's what forums tend to be about. They signed up, and signed in, for the purpose of learning how to make a plan. The MFP goal setting confused them somewhat, so forums seem to be a good place to go for help. They bypass the chit chat, because they are here for a purpose. General Diet and Weight Loss seems a reasonable place to start. But they are quickly overwhelmed by numerous threads debating the validity of various acronyms they don't understand. They see a link, right at the top, created by MFP staff, "Most Helpful Posts", so they figure, good place to start, especially if it's suggested by MFP. Where I lose the story is how, with 789 pages of randomness, even if there are some good topics in here, is this thread useful enough to be given the status of "most helpful posts", as it equates to General Diet and Weight Loss. Especially for the newbies that we all seem to care about??? I accept that this thread has value to many. I accept that mental reprieve is useful, especially for the overwhelmed. The responses and number of pages alone are evident that this has become a repository for that. But, with complete honesty, I can't see how it is one of the most helpful threads in regards to THIS particular sub topic. It doesn't focus on General Diet or weight loss, and is nothing more than hundreds of pages of what happens to be on someone's mind at that point in time. Let the thread live on, but don't raise it to the level of most helpful, when there are still very simple topics that new members don't understand, and would benefit by threads clarifying the basics, without clutter.
I can't make it any more clear than that, so if anyone really wants to continue a debate, which I am happy to do, I offer to do it via PM, or a new post. Hope everyone has a pleasant evening.
I appreciate your further explanation and I will add my pov. I started on MyFitnessPal not knowing the forums existed. I stumbled across them and this thread when it was only like 20 pages in. I laughed so hard over those pages but felt like wow, here is a group of people similar to me or who have even more idiosyncrasies than I do. I felt welcome and safe. In here I can ask what CICO and DH and IIFWYM means. As a newbie the level of meanness and the way certain "knowledgeable" people attack other people is unacceptable to me and scary to a "newbie".
In addition to providing support this thread provides a safe have to explain your struggles with food and the other triggers that can easily lead to overeating. Plus it provides a level of accountability. I have explained my desire to do X. I put it in writing. I feel I am now accountable to do X because the folks in this thread are waiting to hear how I did. I am therefore more successful at achieving X.
I can't imagine in MFP a safer, more supportive place for a new person to enter into. And therefore to be more successful.0 -
This is when I wave the white flag and admit there is no way I can keep up with y'all. I take off for less than 24 hours and I'm 700 posts behind and you're probably talking about something interesting like area rugs in Bilbo Baggins' Bag End house (and why they are boring) and I can't even imagine trying to keep pace. So what's new? I got the Usually Lovely Lady Nuffer to join MFP last week but I haven't yet showed her the forums because I'd be embarrassed that she saw I made it to page seven hundred and sixty mumble and that would thoroughly explain why the laundry is not folded.
Welcome to Mrs. Nuffer and you must get her to come on in! As a NEWBIE she will be warmly welcomed and feel she can ask anything she needs to to get up to speed!

I confess that I feel like a failure today. After fighting cravings all day long yesterday due to extreme tiredness, I went to bed thinking I had won. Then, I tossed and turned for FOUR STUPID HOURS, trying to sleep and still fighting the cravings.
After those four hours, I was bored, annoyed, fed up, and hungry. So, I got up and made brownies. Then I ate eight of them. Yes, EIGHT. They were small and not very rich, but UGH. Seriously, self? -_-

Quite frankly, I believe the entire forum is about as unhelpful as possible to a new member, especially those who are also net-illiterate in general. The search functions are lacking, the group forums are completely broken, and even the most well meaning stickied threads generally devolve into arguing and trolling along the way, to the point that they are occasionally locked down just so the mods have time to delete some of the trash.
I really don't care if this is stickied or not, nor do I consider any of the stickied threads especially useful to the average newbie. I simply object to the idea that just because this thread meanders, it's not useful. You suggested it would be better suited to chit chat. You apparently don't realize that at one point, the mods moved it there. Within 6 hours it was being spammed with sexual fantasies and "confessions" about checking out women at the gym while they worked out for material to *kitten* to later. It was immediately moved back here, and lucky it survived its very brief visit to the cesspool. If it was left there, the entire tone would have changed. It would no longer be a place for new members to see that their weird habits and perceived failures were normal and not catastrophic. It would be a place for yet more fake accounts to play hot or not.

I confess, I sometimes latch on to one particular aspect of a food to try to justify it to myself as somehow being hugely beneficial.
For example, I'm keen to eat plenty of calcium at the moment, so found myself drinking about a pint of chocolate milk (and not the low fat kind either) because calcium. I could just drink standard milk and forgo all the extra sugar/calories, but that's boring!
Chocolate milk is an excellent recovery drink. Highly recommended by many experts. I am sure you were recovering from some form of activity right??0 -

This is going to be me today. I fought cravings all day yesterday and was up a lot through the night thinking about food. I hardly sleep as it is...but last night was bad. I did my workout this morning which is good but I've already had 3 cups of coffee and it's not quite 8am. I will do my best to fight the cravings again today...but I don't see it going well. I'm just so tired and that always plays a role in whether I give in or not.

I just want to thank you all so much for your well wishes! I am overwhelmed by how amazing and supportive everyone in this thread is I don't have the energy at the moment to quote every single one of you but please know that I have read and appreciate every single reply.
Re: not blaming myself.. The logical part of my brain knows deep down it wasn't my fault it's just being her carer I feel responsible for her y'know? Thinking of what I would say to a friend if they were in my situation was good advice.

Ok folks! I wasn't going to look at this thread again until tonight but I had to jump on to share my excitement. After months of getting close and then jumping up I am officially at goal weight today! Actually .4 below. 210+ days later and 31 lbs. Yay!!!!!0

But I stand by what I believe to be a valid point regarding MFP choosing this as a helpful thread within the context of the sub forum in which it exists. Not attacking the participants of this thread, not the purpose of this thread, simply stating that it's purpose isn't necessarily on point with the purpose of why a thread should be a sticky. Sorry you have such a personal attachment and felt offended as a result, but I prefer logic over emotion.

New members should have a central location, supported by MFP, to find valuable info to assist them in gaining the knowledge requires to successfully navigate through the contention that occurs in the forums. There are no questions in here that are being clarified, so I don't follow your argument of it being a safe haven for newbies. Is this designed to educate? I don't see it if it is. If you have a rational argument as to what this brings to newbies as far as helping them reach their fitness or weight goals, I'm all ears, but don't chastise me for making a valid comment that none have been able to debate within the context of my point.

Exactly which of these is not relative to General Diet and Weight Loss?

Thank you for actually engaging, I appreciate a good debate, especially with one who cares. Do you feel that a single thread, addressing all of those topics, quite briefly, and scattered throughout 789 pages, is helpful to the average new member? I really am not picking a fight, and appreciate different points of view. Here's mine, in more detail, since a couple seem to either care, or are perturbed by my presence. And my confession, is that my point of view is from a former newbie, who came to this sight with many assumptions, unknowns, and misguided beliefs that I held to be true. It took me a long time to understand what people talk about, and fight about, in these forums. And longer still to piece together how that all applies to what I am trying to achieve. I simply want to see new members have an easier time than I did. So here is the picture, as it is in my head....
New member joins, hoping to lose weight and gain knowledge about how to reverse whatever caused them to be where they are today. They head to the forums, to read up on current discussions, since that's what forums tend to be about. They signed up, and signed in, for the purpose of learning how to make a plan. The MFP goal setting confused them somewhat, so forums seem to be a good place to go for help. They bypass the chit chat, because they are here for a purpose. General Diet and Weight Loss seems a reasonable place to start. But they are quickly overwhelmed by numerous threads debating the validity of various acronyms they don't understand. They see a link, right at the top, created by MFP staff, "Most Helpful Posts", so they figure, good place to start, especially if it's suggested by MFP. Where I lose the story is how, with 789 pages of randomness, even if there are some good topics in here, is this thread useful enough to be given the status of "most helpful posts", as it equates to General Diet and Weight Loss. Especially for the newbies that we all seem to care about??? I accept that this thread has value to many. I accept that mental reprieve is useful, especially for the overwhelmed. The responses and number of pages alone are evident that this has become a repository for that. But, with complete honesty, I can't see how it is one of the most helpful threads in regards to THIS particular sub topic. It doesn't focus on General Diet or weight loss, and is nothing more than hundreds of pages of what happens to be on someone's mind at that point in time. Let the thread live on, but don't raise it to the level of most helpful, when there are still very simple topics that new members don't understand, and would benefit by threads clarifying the basics, without clutter.
I can't make it any more clear than that, so if anyone really wants to continue a debate, which I am happy to do, I offer to do it via PM, or a new post. Hope everyone has a pleasant evening.
I appreciate your further explanation and I will add my pov. I started on MyFitnessPal not knowing the forums existed. I stumbled across them and this thread when it was only like 20 pages in. I laughed so hard over those pages but felt like wow, here is a group of people similar to me or who have even more idiosyncrasies than I do. I felt welcome and safe. In here I can ask what CICO and DH and IIFWYM means. As a newbie the level of meanness and the way certain "knowledgeable" people attack other people is unacceptable to me and scary to a "newbie".
In addition to providing support this thread provides a safe have to explain your struggles with food and the other triggers that can easily lead to overeating. Plus it provides a level of accountability. I have explained my desire to do X. I put it in writing. I feel I am now accountable to do X because the folks in this thread are waiting to hear how I did. I am therefore more successful at achieving X.
I can't imagine in MFP a safer, more supportive place for a new person to enter into. And therefore to be more successful.

my original goal was monday through thursday sober.
i didn't make it for the four full days. but i did make it for three.
and given that prior to this my last sober day was 29 days ago, i'm ok with where i'm at.
i'll start again monday and try to get to thursday. it's a constant work in progress.
but i'll keep trying...

I can't do spiders. Period. I took kiddo and nephew to the zoo last week and there was a tarantula on exhibit. Naturally, both kids wanted to see it, I had a panic attack! It can be embarrassing, but not as much as my catfish phobia (and I mean the actual fish) lol.
Did you have a catfish incident or does the look of them just gross you out? Curious to know as I've never heard of anyone being phobic of a catfish. I am a spider liberator myself, since we don't have any that could actually hurt you in the UK. As a kid I used to go camping with the Girl Guides, and the camp loos were inevitably full of wildlife. Even the Guide Leader would have me go in there to liberate all the spiders first. There should have been a badge for that, it's a useful life skill!
When I was 11, I went fishing with my parents and cousin. My dad caught a catfish and had it laying on a rail (we were on a sheltered pier), me being the ever curious one decided to go look at it. Apparently, even if they aren't moving they're not quite dead, as when I bent down to look, I immediately took a tail fin to the face. After that, I've been terrified of them, nearly 13 years later.

So my confession for today- I've lost 15 lb now (yay!) I think my body doesn't like it. I'm lazy as anything today, and yesterday I was too. I had energy the last few weeks, now my body is all "nope". My Fitbit isn't smiling at me, I just want to curl up on the couch, and I'm totally phoning in the exercise. I did my 15 min walk this morning and I'll go on my breaks/lunches so I get the 75-90 mins I'm aiming for, but I'm just blah today... And usually I LIKE exercise now. *grrr*0

You should see me at the lake. I am constantly moving my legs, and if something brushes against me I run to the shore so fast... I'm terrified of fish touching me. Any fish.
So I'm not the only one! I had to write an essay about classical conditioning and phobias in psychology once and I wrote about my catfish phobia. My professor actually told me later he had never heard of that before and thought it funny, but unique haha!
I have a really strange, but also extremely severe phobia that I'm almost sure nobody else shares, but I'll never ever admit to it in this thread. Very few people even know about it, maybe 4-5 including my sister and husband. :-/
I have trypophobia, arachnophobia and I'm afraid of heights - but just ones that would maim me, not ones that will kill me if I fall.

Twist of irony, hubby works in pest control, can handle just about every type of insect/spider and rodent. He's absolutely terrified of flying bugs (bees, flies, etc), and this is busy season for "bee jobs" and the like. It's absolutely hilarious to see this grown man running around and shrieking at a fly or bee. :laugh:

my husband hates bees & wasps too. One time we were stopped in traffic in a construction zone and a wasp flew into the car. He screamed like a girl jumped out and ran around the car. Do you feel that a single thread, addressing all of those topics, quite briefly, and scattered throughout 789 pages, is helpful to the average new member? I really am not picking a fight, and appreciate different points of view. Here's mine, in more detail, since a couple seem to either care, or are perturbed by my presence. And my confession, is that my point of view is from a former newbie, who came to this sight with many assumptions, unknowns, and misguided beliefs that I held to be true. It took me a long time to understand what people talk about, and fight about, in these forums. And longer still to piece together how that all applies to what I am trying to achieve. I simply want to see new members have an easier time than I did. So here is the picture, as it is in my head....
New member joins, hoping to lose weight and gain knowledge about how to reverse whatever caused them to be where they are today. They head to the forums, to read up on current discussions, since that's what forums tend to be about. They signed up, and signed in, for the purpose of learning how to make a plan. The MFP goal setting confused them somewhat, so forums seem to be a good place to go for help. They bypass the chit chat, because they are here for a purpose. General Diet and Weight Loss seems a reasonable place to start. But they are quickly overwhelmed by numerous threads debating the validity of various acronyms they don't understand. They see a link, right at the top, created by MFP staff, "Most Helpful Posts", so they figure, good place to start, especially if it's suggested by MFP. Where I lose the story is how, with 789 pages of randomness, even if there are some good topics in here, is this thread useful enough to be given the status of "most helpful posts", as it equates to General Diet and Weight Loss. Especially for the newbies that we all seem to care about??? I accept that this thread has value to many. I accept that mental reprieve is useful, especially for the overwhelmed. The responses and number of pages alone are evident that this has become a repository for that. But, with complete honesty, I can't see how it is one of the most helpful threads in regards to THIS particular sub topic. It doesn't focus on General Diet or weight loss, and is nothing more than hundreds of pages of what happens to be on someone's mind at that point in time. Let the thread live on, but don't raise it to the level of most helpful, when there are still very simple topics that new members don't understand, and would benefit by threads clarifying the basics, without clutter.
I can't make it any more clear than that, so if anyone really wants to continue a debate, which I am happy to do, I offer to do it via PM, or a new post. Hope everyone has a pleasant evening.
Quite frankly, I believe the entire forum is about as unhelpful as possible to a new member, especially those who are also net-illiterate in general. The search functions are lacking, the group forums are completely broken, and even the most well meaning stickied threads generally devolve into arguing and trolling along the way, to the point that they are occasionally locked down just so the mods have time to delete some of the trash.
I really don't care if this is stickied or not, nor do I consider any of the stickied threads especially useful to the average newbie. I simply object to the idea that just because this thread meanders, it's not useful. You suggested it would be better suited to chit chat. You apparently don't realize that at one point, the mods moved it there. Within 6 hours it was being spammed with sexual fantasies and "confessions" about checking out women at the gym while they worked out for material to *kitten* to later. It was immediately moved back here, and lucky it survived its very brief visit to the cesspool. If it was left there, the entire tone would have changed. It would no longer be a place for new members to see that their weird habits and perceived failures were normal and not catastrophic. It would be a place for yet more fake accounts to play hot or not.
I have to say I agree wholeheartedly with the first bolded statement. The most basic tenets of weight loss and fitness can become controversial here with opposing views being presented as solid facts, degenerating into arguments about semantics and the validity of scientific studies. (You can sure pick out which members were on the high school debating team, they know all the fancy terminology for dissecting an argument!) Until you've been around the forums for a while and get to know the personalities, you're going to be awfully confused as to which 8,000-post member's advice is decent and which is junk.
I remember the move to ChitChat but I missed all the salacious stuff. Damn. I must actually have been doing some work around that time.0 -

I almost want to look. But the reactions have been unanimous so I think I'll spare myself.
The first thing I thought of with tiny holes was a colander. Specifically, The World's Most Useless Colander, which I happen to own and it's only good for draining something really fine because it has TINY HOLES. (My SO insists on using it to drain pasta, which is incredibly ineffective, and I hate watery pasta but I can't seem to steer him toward one of the other two perfectly normal colanders. Sigh.) Anyway, the colander is annoying but not exactly horrifying or freakish so I assume no one is googling pictures of my colander.
No it's organic things. Like lotus pods. Tiny bubbles all together. Stuff like that.
Or if you've had a pilleated woodpecker have a go at a tree.
Nice. So this is turning into one of those "do you see the old woman or the young woman?" "do you see a blue dress or a gold dress?" things. And it means I may end up looking just to see which camp I'm in.
Except I don't sleep that great as it is and I don't want to risk a night of insomnia, just in case.
@ythannah, look at this picture. It's a benign image, not a gory shock-value photoshopped image.
If you truly have it, looking at that flower will make you feel uncomfortable. If you don't have it, it won't bother you. There's a thing where people photoshop that texture onto skin and make creepy horror pictures, and those get really disgusting, but being disgusted by them isn't a sign of trypophobia, that's just a sign of being disgusted by gross photoshopped picture.
It's just an ugly flower with weird things in it that look, to me, like blueberry boobs.
