  • My friend emailed me this. I thought it was pretty cute, but I wouldn't trade the one flawed guy I've had for 51 years for all four of the others.

    Five tips for a woman....

    1. It is important that a man helps you around the house and has a job.

    2. It is important that a man makes you laugh.

    3. It is important to find a man you can count on! And doesn't lie to you.

    4. It is important that a man loves you and spoils you.

    5. It is important that these four men don't know each other.

I get weighed every Wednesday and part of my being accountable is to report my results. I gained 3 pounds from my lowest weight.:ohwell: It does not surprise me as I have had an off week with eating foods I don’t usually eat:embarassed: …. as well as not exercising because I hadn’t been feeling well. Yesterday and today have been very clean days and I’m sure I will drop those unwanted pounds:bigsmile: . But this is exactly why I love this program. :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: If I track…..honestly….I can’t blame the weather for bad results:laugh: . I KNOW what I went over on so it makes sense that a couple of pounds came back.:ohwell: Before MFP I would have avoided the scale for months:noway: . Now….even though I REALLY wasn’t looking forward to weighing myself, I’m glad I did.
My hubby has a virus:sick: and a cold and I’ve been fighting it. I exercised this morning anyways but I could tell I was pushing:yawn: . I had a very busy day at work and am very tired, so this post will be brief.
I haven’t even had time to read the posts but will try to catch up on them later.
Have a lovely day, everyone and stay positive! That’s the engine that keeps us going!:drinker:

Good evening ladies but oops, because I just looked out the window and it's getting dark so must first go out and shut the chooks away for the night. I think we are supposed to have a lunar eclipse tonight but no way of seeing it as there's too much cloud in the sky. The hens are now safe in their house and I saw my cat Boris curled up for the night on top of the compost heap so he'll smell sweet in the morning!

Connie ~ That is such good news about your older dog's weight loss as it must mean the new medication is working. If I found two Afghan hounds on my bed I'd probably head for the spare room rather than try to squeeze in!!

I agree that we should be aiming to meet our calorie goals and have learned that being too low stops the weight loss. On the whole I try to be honest with my friends but am aware, as Sandy says that we also have to offer moral support, especially to those that are making massive alterations to their calorie intakes. As ever though tough love is offered for all the right reasons isn't it!!

Sandy ~ Yes I did just manage to squeeze in amongst my cats but couldn't move much once I was there!! As for the flat screen tv, yes you were very generous but may I say NUTS!!! That was definitely the wine talking!!

Marie ~ I think our grandmothers would be horrified at the lack of needle skills today and I'm afraid that includes me.:embarassed: I remember my gran would use every spare piece of material to make something useful. I have a doll that was given to my mother when she was born in 1919 and can still recall my gran making the clothes that it still wears today. The material was from baby clothes I'd grown out of. If it's not too late when I head for my bed I'll take a photo of the doll to post for you.

Barbie ~ You did make me laugh.  Standard poodles AND a 14 lb cat. No chance of ever getting into that bed!! Boris who sleeps on the compost heap weighs 6.6 kilos which is a similar size to your cat and I know I wouldn't be able to shift him with my knees if I needed to turn over!!

Irene ~ That was funny. Four men!! The mind boggles.

Birdie ~ Hello, I was the same and never weighed myself when I knew I wasn't eating healthily. Total denial!! MFP has been a godsend to me and keeps me focused so I'm sure once I reach my weight loss goal I'll continue to log and keep up with everyone.

That's me for this evening. I had pizza for dinner only because I went food shopping late having not eaten much during the day so of course was hungry. I'm now regretting it because even after several glasses of water to wash it down I feel stuffed. Serves me right!!!:explode:

    Our Yearly Dementia Test

It's that time of year for us to take our annual senior citizen test.

Exercise of the brain is as important as exercise of the muscles. As we grow older, it's important to keep mentally alert. If you don't use it, you lose it!

Below is a very private way to gauge how your memory compares to the last test. Some may think it is too easy but the ones with memory problems may have difficulty.

Take the test presented here to determine if you're losing it or not.

The spaces below are so you don't see the answers until you've made your answer.

OK, relax, clear your mind and begin.

    1. What do you put in a toaster?

Answer: 'bread.' If you said 'toast' give up now and do something else..
    Try not to hurt yourself.
If you said, bread, go to Question 2.

    2. Say 'silk' five times. Now spell 'silk.' What do cows drink?

Answer: Cows drink water. If you said 'milk,' don't attempt the next question Your brain is over-stressed and may even overheat. Content yourself with reading more appropriate literature such as Auto World.
However, if you said 'water', proceed to question 3.

    3. If a red house is made from red bricks and a blue house is made from blue bricks and a pink house is made from pink bricks and a black house is made from black bricks, what is a green house made from?

Answer: Greenhouses are made from glass. If you said 'green bricks,' why are you still reading these??? If you said 'glass,' go on to Question 4.

    4. Without using a calculator - You are driving a bus from London to
Milford Haven in Wales . In London , 17 people get on the bus.
In Reading , 6 people get off the bus and 9 people get on.
In Swindon , 2 people get off and 4 get on.
In Cardiff , 11 people get off and 16 people get on.
In Swansea , 3 people get off and 5 people get on.
In Carmathen, 6 people get off and 3 get on.
You then arrive at Milford Haven ..

Without scrolling back to review, how old is the bus driver?
Answer: Oh, for crying out loud!
Don't you remember your own age?
It was YOU driving the bus!!

PS: 95% of people fail most of the questions!!

So, here I am one more time. I totally screwed up and I mean totally! I used every excuse I could find to allow myself to eat nothing but garbage and I mean nothing but garbage. Excuses yes, reasons...NO! Even today, I screwed up but just a litle. I managed to go by all of the cakes and pies but at the last minute, I saw just a slice of cake, not to big...only about 1/2 slice really...bought it...ate it!!! If I can get thru the rest of the evening with just my planned snack, I will only be a little over. Wish me luck!!!! :blushing:

Dee: Katy has been on my mind since you posted her passing. I know that it's true that for some, they are in a much better place but they've still left a giant hole here in our lives. I'm building my bridge over the hole and I hope her friends and family will be able to the same in due time.

    Irene: you crack me up...4 men.......wait, that's not a bad idea...hmmmmmm:wink:

Phyllis: I think, as others, inner ear. Man can that little thing mess you up. But as Arnold said "It is not a tumor".

Connie: I agree about the calories....too few, too much...oy vey.....:grumble:

Sandy: You are a true winner. Wine or not, you made a generous decision. You go girl!!! Did your husband leave you?

    Buzz: Luv ya!!! {{{{{{{:heart: }}}}}}}

Deb: Where the heck are ya????

That's enough for my first day back.....I talk too much anyway!!:drinker:

tip8rb...thank you for the link to the answer of if we should eat the burned calories. I read it and it made a lot of  say that I have also noticed that if I have not eaten my 1200 calories when I hit finished that MFP will let me know that I have not eaten enough calories. I am usually not so low that I have to worry about not eating enough.

:flowerforyou: Sandy..love your quiz. Maybe because I got all the answers right. The one about the bus really kept me busy, though. I was doing all the adding and subtracting in my head and for nothing.

:flowerforyou: BirdieM...the three pounds could be nothing more than water. We can hope..right? No, it really can be.

:flowerforyou: Irene, I loved that. So funny. Just goes to show that we really should be happy with who we have.

:flowerforyou: Phyllis...I abolutely LOVE my HRM. I wouldn't know what I am doing without it. I love being able to track things.

My husband just called to say that he is done picking strawberries. He could live on them. I like them a little but not as he does. He also asked about this years pea crop as this is what I in interested in. Aparently it is not a good one. I love fresh peas.

    Sandy said:
Connie, now you have me confused. MFP gives me 1200 calories a day, today I exercised and gained 328 calories. So I eat my 1200 calories along with my exercise calories which today will be 1528 (unless I take Daisy for a walk later). Is this right or not?

Sandy, like I said in my post - this is one of the biggest, longest standing debates on MFP. The "experts" all seem to feel you should be eating your exercise calories since MFP has already programmed in a deficit for you that will allow you to loose 1 pound or so a week.

And that's what is said in the link I posted.

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/188509-my-take-on-exercise-calories-please-read-if-you-are-new

HOWEVER - if you want to loose weight at a faster rate than MFP suggests, you should NOT eat back all of your exercise calories. And, as you said, you don't when there are hundreds of them but it is still important to take in an adequate number of calories to maintain your health - and its generally felt that for a woman that's about 1200 a day.. There are days when I work all day in the yard, AND walk the dogs and burn off 1200 to 1500 calories. If I added those to the 1337 that is my base, I'd be so stuffed I wouldn't be able to walk.

You've done very well doing things your way. Don't worry about whether you're doing it right or wrong - what you're doing is obviously right for you.

As far as the congratulations are concerned - if you're encouraging someone to eat fewer calories than they should, it's kinda counter productive don't you think? All it says is "so and so" finished their day and were under their calorie goal. Maybe they only had 200 calories that day, or only logged one meal -- not good, and not to be encouraged.

And again - this is just my humble opinion, not carved in stone anywhere.

 When I got up this morning I walked the dogs individually on the hill. After breakfast I walked the frisky poodles for 65 minutes before going to my two hour line dance class. I came home for lunch then met my friend for four and half mile walk. After dinner I walked the poodles again for another 35 minutes.:bigsmile:Right now my pedometer says that I've walked over 30,00 steps. If I tried to do that on 1200 or even 1400 calories, I'd collapse. I eat some or all of my exercise calories every day and make every effort to make every calorie I consume a nutritious calorie. So at the end of the day when it says that I am under my calorie goal it means under the basic 1200 calories plus exercise calories

:flowerforyou: I don't congratulate anyone for being under their calorie goal if they are way under 1200 calories or have a day full of non-nutritious food.

 Sandy, I loved the quiz

 Irene, I loved the suggestion about four different men to meet all our needs.

:flowerforyou: Phyllis I hope the dizziness has gone away by now.

:flowerforyou: Marie, I love all the cute things you post......you are a champ with the computer

I have been busy going through boxes of old papers.......do I really need every piece of paper about the houses I sold years ago? So I need every birthday card I ever got ?

Just stopped by to prove I'm still alive...when I saw Barbiecat's question about finding papers. Yes Barbie, in case you make a profit on your house, if you can prove what you sold the previous house for, and then what you bought this one for, you will probably not have to pay taxes. Although the rules for over 65 have changed I think! Anyway, they are in the real estate records of your former county if you don't find the records at home!

Happy Thursday!! It is indeed a great day, since the sun is shining the weather is warm and I lost 2 pounds!! Yipee! I am .06 away from my second goal and I am excited. Unfortunately, I am meeting friends for dinner tonight but plan on good choices and riding the exercise bike this morning. I can't make my meeting today as I have to go back to my eye doctor to see the specialist for my macular degeneration. My regular eye doctor just wants to be sure everything is ok and doesn't anticipate any problems.

Buzz, I think you were tired when you read Barbies post. I think she meant papers from previous houses that are long gone and no Barbie I don't think you need them, but on the other hand I also have all the cards and notes my husband has ever given me, just sentimental that way. I think I have lots of drawings and crafts my grandchildren have given me and you know when I die all this will go in the trash but I can't bring myself to throw it out.

Connie, I understand what you are saying but realized that if I don't eat each and everyone one of my exercise calories that maybe the weight would come off a little faster, case in point last night I had left over calories and today I am down. My son also gave me good advice in saying if you are active during the day eat more, if not eat less. Our body listens to what we tell it as long as we don't abuse it. Your link explains it perfect, so thank you for sharing that with us. I agree with the starvation mode and do try to tell people to eat more if I see so many calories left over on their diaries. Soon I will be able to maintain and as the article stated I will up my calories which will seem strange to me, but will do what it takes to keep this weight off. Thanks again.

    Have a great day everyone!!

:flowerforyou: Barbie, you have to be the most active woman I know. Great workouts.

Husband picked fresh strawberries last night. I sliced some and put them on a sandwich of almond butter. Very good. The strawberries are quite sweet this year.

Just stopped by to affirm that I am still alive also and have gotten “back with the program”. I was reading my newsfeeds and saw Marie’s advice to Connie about not letting your guard down. I did and proceeded to go down that road that led to losing double digits of my accomplishment. When I saw the second number that I swore I’d never see again it scared me back to the right path. Luckily I maintained the exercise through that.

I never finished all of the Harry Potter books when I was working so I began at the beginning and started listening to the audio books while working out, sewing or gardening. I took a temporary break now to listen to a book Oprah talked about on one of her last shows, “Women, Food & God” by Geneen Roth. It’s about compulsive eating and self-loathing and has really struck a chord with me. She’s written other books about food that I think I will explore after Harry. One line that I’ve listened to over & over and this is a very poor paraphrase but it’s “love and misery are not defined by how much money we have, what we look like or what we have achieved”. So anyway I’m trying to focus on now and not how life will be better when I’m thin because that will not fix the inside.

A couple of days ago I bought what I refer to as “my dangling carrot outfit”, white Capri leggings and a very cool orange tunic that that says Love Life and also a tee with the most amazing 3 paragraph quote about living life. Let me tell you the white leggings are a leap of faith for me  They all almost fit but that "dangling carrot reward" is a realistic almost and not a they will fit me in 30 pounds. I’ve hung the tee in the closet where I can read the quote every day and know that continuing down the road, the leggings will fit and I will look good and feel good in them. So anyhow, that’s where I am.

On another note, we’ve finally gotten some rain and the plants in the garden are loving it. DH dug holes for me so I could put in 4 more daylily varieties . Now that the larger patches of the garden real estate are filled in I’m going to start collecting different varieties of sedum and hens & chicks to put in nooks and crannies between rocks. Have to take the flannel rag quilt I finished to the laundromat so it is ready for a graduation party on Saturday.

    HI SNEAKER PALS:

Jeanne_ Piquilter_ I Love the pic of the quilt on your profile pic. Are those rag time quilts the kind that you make lots of squares that already have batting in the middle and then you sew them together and clip the edges and then wash so they fluff out? If so. those are the kids that my mom and dad make. I love them. I have one and in the winter my husband and I fight over who gets to snuggle up with it on the couch.

Sandy_ I never did tell you that I think you are amazing to give up the big screen tv that you won. WOW Good things will surely come back to you. That is how it works in life. You sound like a very generous person always giving giving giving of your time and talents. Good job on the almost reaching your goal. I must say I am jealous but I am on the way so I'll just keep plugging along.

Buzz_ You really are a night owl! I am always glad to see your posts and hear how you are doing. How late do you sleep in when you stay up till 1:00 surfing the web!!! I have been staying up later now that school is out but by late I mean like 11:00 and then I am dozing on the couch and waiting to drag myself into bed.

Becky_ That almond butter sounds interesting. Do you buy that in a jar or make it yourself? I love strawberries too but have never had good luck growing my own. WE get lots of them in Winter over here so I buy up and freeze bags of them and they come in handy when it is time for a smoothie.

Barbie_All day I was thinking of you ask I walked from room to room in my house and then to get my mani and pedi. But I wasn't anywhere near all the steps that you took. you are the Queen when it comes to kicking butt on exercise calories. 2 hours of dancing class too. You are rocking the world.

BirdieM_ What kind of work do you do? congratulations on the loss of the 2 of Those 3 pounds. I lose a couple of those mean ones too but don't seem to be dropping after that. I have stayed at the same weight within a pound or two for about a month and I am getting ready for a big lose! I guess I need to shake things up. I seem to do the same exercise every day and eat about the same types of food. I look forward to getting to the states and diving into piles of lettuce and salad greens.

Well It is just 2 more sleeps until I get to board a plane and head out WEST! Bye Bye Middle EAST. Can you tell I am excited.
    Have a good day. Phyllis

I work in an office as an Office Manager so I don't move around a lot. I work 40 hours a week so that's why I'm so religious about getting on the treadmill every morning. Also my hubby and I are hoping to get on our bicycles now that the weather is getting better.

I went to a cookout last Saturday and my niece, who is a gourmet chef, brought this salad. I thought it was delicious, so I cornered her and got her recipe. I thought I’d share it with you. It’s great if you love greens and are looking for something unique, tasty and a lovely addition to any buffet.

“Raw Kale and Sesame Salad with Maple Soy Vinaigrette”
Tear one bunch of Kale (any variety) into bite size pieces and discard center ribs.
    Wash and set aside.
Make vinaigrette in large liquid measuring cup.
¼ cup of pure maple syrup
¼ cup of soy sauce (or Braggs liquid aminos)
    ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
¼ to ½ cup Extra Virgin Oil (or combo of EVOO, toasted sesame, and flax oil)
A dab of Hot Sesame Oil
    2 cloves crushed garlic
    Big pinch ground black pepper
Use blender or put in jar with lid and shake vigorously.
Pour over DRY kale and mix. It’s best to massage the dressing in, making sure to coat every leaf. Let sit for at least 15 min. to allow the vinaigrette to “cook” or break down the kale a bit.
Just before serving, mix in a handful of sesame seeds and enjoy.

:flowerforyou: Today is one of the three days a week I go to line dance classes. Today I got to teach a beginner dance (the same one I taught last Friday----a dance that I learned at the workshop at the beginning of the month). I got up really early this morning----I love the long days in June
and had time to take the poodles for a walk for over an hour.

:flowerforyou: Sandy, you are an amazingly principled person to donate that big screen TV back. most people would not have been that principled and generous. Congratulations on your continued weight loss.....i noticed that you have been really consistent about riding your exercise bike.......more exercise burns more calories and boosts your metabolism so it's a double winner.

 Buzz, a lot of the papers I'm talking about are things like all the paid utilities bills from back to the 1980's for houses we sold over ten years ago.

 Becky, I love almond butter but found that I can't have it in the house because it doesn't take me long to go from spreading it on a sandwich thin to eating it out of the jar with a big spoon

:flowerforyou: Jeanne, you are so right about staying focused on what is happening right now and not falling into the trap of thinking "I'll be happy when ________________________"

 Birdie, I'm glad to hear that two of those naughty pounds are gone  you are an inspiration to us all the way you get right back on track after a detour.

 Jane, welcome to the group. I hope you will post more and read more and become part of our family.

 Phyllis, I started being a walking fan by being more active at home and gradually started walking outdoors and then walking whenever I got a chance instead of sitting. for a lot of my life I brought a book with me when I traveled and sat in airports between flights and read. Now, when I travel I have a backpack as my carry-on so it is easy for me to walk all over the airport between planes so I get some exercise  Where will you be when you come back to the States?

:flowerforyou: Jeri, be sure to tell us exactly when the surgery is (when you find out) so we can all be thinking healing thoughts for you

 I took the dogs to the dog park after lunch but now that the temperature is in the 60's they think it is too warm and after a bit of running they wanted to lie down in the shade with the Old English Sheepdog that was there at the same time

When you sell your primary residence, you can make up to $250,000 in profit if you're a single owner, twice that if you're married, and not owe any capital gains taxes. So - if you sell your house for a half million dollars more than you paid for it, and invested in it, then you may have to pay capital gains.

Wheeeeeee that's exactly what we've all been waiting to hear. I must have checked this thread twenty times looking for a follow up post from you. You remember the Gloria Gaynor song from the late 70s?? It was about some guy who walked out on the girl but some of the lyrics are perfect for you......

At first I was afraid I was petrified

    I will survive. Hey hey.
It took all the strength I had not to fall apart
And I spent oh so many nights
Just feeling sorry for myself. I used to cry
But now I hold my head up high
    I will survive.

Hi everyone. I did get some yard work done before the rain came. It looks so much better. I am struggling with my diet and don't expect to see a loss this week. What is wrong with me that I can't stay focused on my healthy plan?

Jeri -- I am so happy that you are feeling better about your diagnosis and treatment plan. Just having a plan always makes things feel better. Prayers for you.

Take care and keep smiling. Gayla

CONNIE. Thank you. Those lyrics are absolutely right on. Thanks.

GAYLA thank you too. Sometimes it's just hard to stay focused. If I religiously record everything I eat, even the slips, I stay better motivated.

SWISSMISS all prayers are welcome. Thanks

And everyone else who has said a silent prayer or wished me luck. It's working and thank you

I tried to keep very busy today. I made myself a loaf of bread to freeze and I'll do another tomorrow. Phoned another friend who had breast cancer a couple of years ago to compare notes. Got some books from the library about breast cancer. Really I am doing pretty good. We went over to Moms tonight to play a couple of games of cards. I don't want to neglect her. I know she is feeling scared about this too. She is being so sweet. I love her so much..

Anyway, I recorded my food today and will try to tomorrow as well. I don't really care I'd I lose weight, but I sure don't want to put it on.

Hope tomorrow is a great day for everyone. Cheers.

Thank you so much. Those tulips put a real smile on my face.

My appt with the doctor went well. They will schedule the surgery within 1 to 3 weeks. It is very treatable. I am scared but know that I will be just fine in the end.

We had a great weekend get away. Sure glad we did it.

Sounds good Jeri. Glad you enjoy your weekend. Blessd your Mom and bless you. , Jeri.
You are just too sweet for words.

    Hope everyone is doing great.

I have already blown it today. Had a mocha frappe. Wow, didn't realize all the calories in one of those. More than half my daily allowance. Guess I will really have to work hard today to burn them up. :grumble: I should really know better.:embarassed:

Happy Friday! Another beautiful day, sun is shining, my weight stayed the same so life is good.
Might try to go to pool today although my children's grandmother is in the hospital and I should go see her. Even though I am divorced from her son we remained close friends, she is the one Bryanna and I went to see in Arizona, who now moved back to Chicago. Her daughter posted on face book that she was in the hospital with congestive heart failure but should come home in a few days. She is 94 years old but still is doing well for the most part.

Becky, years ago I found out the calories in Starbucks coffees and drinks and never went back.

Jeri, love your positive attitude, you are like Irene, two special angels here on earth.

Gayla, I think it hard for all of us to stay on track, some days harder than others. Just do the best you can and maybe posting your food daily would help you keep you focused. Just keep your diary private for your own benefit. If you see what you are going over in you might decide not to eat that again. Just don't leave us again, please.:love:

Connie, I sang that song often after my divorce, I was going to survive with four kids no matter what. It is a good motivation song that applies to lots of things.

Marie, I know nothing about quilting but is sounds like hard work to me. I thought of you yesterday when our weatherman said how hot it is in Texas. Stay cool and don't venture out in that heat. :noway:

Barbie, you are always so nice with your compliments, thank you for being so sweet. I never thought I would get down to the weight I am at and it makes me want to keep going. I will tell you that I got lots of compliments at the benefit asking me how I lost the weight and I have to admit it felt so good. :blushing:

Birdie, thanks for sharing the recipe, it sounds really good. Congrats again on losing the two pounds, let's get this last pound off together.

Phylis, I had to laugh with your comment of two more sleeps until boarding, my granddaughter measures time the same way.
 Have a safe flight and great trip, hope you will keep up with us once you are in the states. Thank you for the compliments not sure I am worthy of all of this praise. :blushing:

Jane, hope you will continue to visit with our group, We welcome all new comers and are here for support if you need it.

Jeane, we missed you and welcome back. Love your dangling carrot story. Anything that helps us keep focused is worth doing.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day, enjoy !!!
