What nobody tells you about losing weight

How cold you will feel in the winter. Experiencing the seasons in a different way due to fat loss. I don't get nearly as hot in the summer as I used to and freeze in the winter11

I can relate to this! In my heavy days I could tolerate cold down to the mid 20's without much discomfort. This winter I was shivering in temps of low 40's even with my heavy winter coat on! I do seem to be more comfortable in the summer though.6 -

Yes- it's called vanity sizing. Kind of irritates me when I read someone's weight loss story and they say, "I now weigh 160 and I'm a size 4!" I'm like, no you're not. I was a size 8 in high school and I weighed 115. Sizes have changed over the past 20 years. Now if you're a bit taller and shaped a little different than me maybe you wear a smaller size in relation to your weight because of where you carry it (I'm more of a pear shape). Anyway, if I go to Goodwill I can fit into an 8 in pants and maybe a 6, depending because they are donated clothes that have been sitting in closets for years. I'm 5'4" and now weigh 125. If I go to JCPenney or somewhere like that I am closer to a size 2 or 4, I'm like, really? No I'm not! Kind of silly when you think about it and it would make things a LOT simpler if women's clothes were like men's- just inches for the waist and inseam- you can't change the size of an inch!![/quote]
Vanity sizing is ticking me off! When I weighed 130 pds in the late 80's, my pants were size 10. Now at 138, I'm size 4 or 6. I shopped in Kohl's last week, and the size 6 Vera Bradley shorts were Huge on me! Then, I tried on "Small" tank tops that were too big. Sounds like a nice problem to have, right? Not when there are no "X Smalls". Luckily there was one pair of size 4 shorts. So frustrating!

How when you were obese, you loathed the summertime, but now you are glad it is here so you won't freeze all the time, and wear a sweater in the air conditioning!19

4. I was VERY surprised to find out that it is now even MORE difficult to find clothes that fit than before. Why can’t women’s clothes be sized like men’s, where you look for the waist/inseam number in inches that matches your measurements? I am disabled, and it is painful and exhausting for me to try on clothes in a store. Last week, before leaving the house, I went to the websites of the brands I intended to buy and consulted their sizing charts. But when I got to the store, NONE of those clothes fit - I only found out by trial and error that what used to be size 10 is now size 6. Also, I tried on multiple pair of pants and shorts from the same company in the same style that were labeled the same size, but no two pair fit the same. When I brought the size 6 pants home, I compared them to the old size 10 hanging in my closet, and the waist band was EXACTLY THE SAME!

Same. I'm 5'7" and 145, and wear a 4 in Lucky Brand jeans, which is utterly ridiculous. I should be an 8 at best. It's flipping nuts.5 -
@sadsongkrysy If I could "awesome" your post about 800 more times, I would.
You'll remember that you have a "bucket list", mine are:
1. Look good in a kilt
2. Cosplay as The Punisher
3. Learn Martial Arts
4. Do one of them zip line things26 -
When you go to do one of them zipline things and realize you are 60# under the max weight and nobody looks at you like you don't belong there... awesomeness!30

I hear so many talk about feeling colder but I really don't feel colder at all. I wonder why?1 -

I must say, I haven't noticed too much vanity sizing here in South Africa, but when you buy branded clothes from the States it is a doozy! I currently fit nicely in Medium shirts (South African); But had to buy an extra small shirt a month ago, because it was made in the States - and it is getting too big at present...
Also bought a pair of billabong pants. Sizing showed US 6; UK/RSA 10 and it is now way too big. I actually still fit in nicely in UK/RSA 12 (which should be US 8) at present. So yes, vanity sizing is very irritating, especially if it is not something you are used to.
Ps. I'm 5'6" and currently weigh 142 pounds...
Other things they don't tell you:
You will mostly hear compliments from other fit/slim people. Those friends that are overweight will not say much/if anything.
Sitting long periods of time in a car can be very painful on the glutes/back.
You may require smaller shoes
As you get closer to goal, your goals may/probably will keep changing.

So what do you do if you're a very small woman shopping in the states? It's not really a problem I'll ever face (I'm 6'1'') but if the sizes keep getting smaller, a woman who used to wear a size 2 would now wear what... a size -4?11
-
-Skin gets saggy
-And how much more sexually active you get. Hubby and I seem to be in the honeymoon stage all over again!
-How much I'd check my butt out on a daily basis
-How you have to eat a lot to lose weight. I'm never hungry!16 -

That's what I want to know! I don't like to buy clothes without trying them on, so online shops don't appeal to me. I know that Junior clothes run smaller than Misses, but this 57 yo woman is not buying teen clothes lol!9 -

I felt colder at first, but as time went on, I stopped feeling cold all the time. Maybe you just happened to have quickly adapted to any temperature perception shift?4 -
I buy from Goodwill- the sizes are more like they were years ago and you can find a lot of good things, some barely used and a lot of name brand things for much cheaper. I also don't want to go down to the junior sizes to find clothes. Last time I had a hard time finding jeans at a regular store because they didn't run small enough. But someone above talked about clothes in Asia- you do have to buy like a large or an extra large if you are wearing a small in the USA. I've bought things on Amazon that said medium (they came from China) and they were WAY too small- like dresses that didn't fit over my hips and I weigh 125 at 5'4" so I'm not skin and bones but I'm a lot smaller than I was. I ended up giving them to an Asian woman. So maybe the clothing manufacturers are going by the average sizes of women in the population. I am also thinking that women would be more likely to buy a size 2 in a certain brand which helps that company's sales I suppose.11

I love this thread! After losing 35 of 99lbs: My toilet seat magically got bigger. I can put my thumb and middle finger around my wrist and they touch. The driver's seat in my vehicle is actually quite roomy. Healthy lifestyles are catching - three people in my life have recently signed up for MFP and are starting their own journies.22

Several stores have started labeling zero and double zero - absurd!
If you shop on line, some vendors offer Fit Predictor. You can enter specific sizes in other brands that fit you properly (and I think you can enter numbers for tops/dresses and bottoms separately, which is useful) and it will tell you not only what size they recommend for the item you're looking at but also how good a fit it will be. The couple of times I tried it it worked.2 -

I think wedding dresses are like that. my sister was a smaller size but 14 for her wedding dress. I have an old 10 formal dress, it's so much smaller than an off the rack 10 now. US sizes.2 -

I'm with you on the drivers seat. For years I claimed my legs must be longer sitting than standing, i had to put the seat back where my hubby did to comfortably reach the petal, now that i have no butt and i'm considerably smaller I have to scoot it way up to actually reach properly.5 -

Yes I have been sewing for years. Lesson one forget about the sizes in shops. Totally do not align with sewing patterns4 -
What they did tell me is that as I got closer to my goal my rate of weight loss would slow down. It hasn't . For most 30-day intervals since I began on January 25, it's been 10 lb per month. Maybe 50 lb remaining isn't anyone's idea of "close to goal".
On the topic of women's clothing sizes ... I had the opportunity to see a dress that my great-grandmother wore. She married during the 1860's, so this was way more than 100 years ago. It was tiny, not more than a 19th century size 2. It was made from one bolt of fabric and the fabric was a big checkerboard pattern of blue and white blocks.12 -
Oh yes I know about the sewing thing- like I said I'm probably a 2 or a 4 in the store but more like a 12 in sewing patterns. We have a sewing class at the school where I work and the girls who take it are often very upset when they are measured and told what pattern size to get and the teacher has to get out an old skirt she wore in high school to show them that sizes have changed and sewing patterns have not- by looking at the skirt it looks like a size 3 or maybe a 5, but it is a size 9 (has a tag). It's a 35 year old skirt. I sewed a lot of costumes for a musical years ago and there were girls that looked so tiny to me but they were a size 10 by the sewing pattern.3

For ages I was going 'cold all the time? What are these people talking about?', even after losing 50kgs. This current Aussie winter though, blech. Leggings under my pants, thermal tops under my work shirts, hiking socks for being in the office. I bet I look like I've gained weight because of the extra clothing I'm wearing.8 -

So then I must be cold all the time since I have Canadian winters haha.2 -
