Long run planned today....going to slow it waaay down at 70% max heart rate, hopefully 10 miles today...still very hot at Naptown....84 degrees, 91HI, and 52% humidity. Will check in later.

Achieved goal of 10 miles.....but unable to slow to 70% ...at all. First mile, averaged 75%, then next 6 miles at 80-82%; Felt good, breathing well, focused on posture, arm placement and slowing my steps. Then legs and feet became very sore and I felt like I had to pick up the pace to stretch out my hips...and I noticed that my heart rate decreased by 3%. Co-incidence? It happened on 3 other occasions in the last couple of miles...I really tried to focus on keeping the heart rate down, still at 79-83%. After completing mile 9.25, sprinted the last 3/4 mile...ended with 96% heart rate, but not really breathing hard or bent over trying to catch my breath like I usually am when going full out. ...it took forever (nearly 2.5 hours for 10 miles)....but going to try it again in a couple of weeks. Not sore at all. Even cut my recovery walk (jumping jacks, high knees, etc) short due to my husband needing me to help with the yard.

    August 1---poison ivy....rest day
    August 2....;poison ivy....rest day
August 3....dr.'s visit for the poison ivy....put on Prednisone....rest again
    August 4....4 miles....
    August 5....husband's 65th birthday....celebration with friends.
    August 6.....10 miles
August 7....still with poison ivy....rest day...actually I work the night shift.
August 8th...weight lifting, Spinning class...then 3.87 miles on the treadmill.
    August 9th.....6 miles...
August 10th....rest day....lots of walking at the Indiana State Fair.
August 11th...weight lifting....treadmill (rolling hills)....3.89 miles. Worked in some sprints, otherwise running at slower pace...averaged 11:45 minute pace. Drenched in sweat afterward. Last day of Prednisone.

4 pages of posts that I haven't read yet...you guys are killing me.

The prednisone taper was rough. Didn't feel like working out today at all. Slept hard last night 5 hours and then another 3 plus 2 extra in the afternoon...total of 10 hours. Legs today feel heavy esp. around the knees. I don't think that my legs are more sore today than normal but that Prednisone masked my muscle soreness for a week, and I am now feeling it. Skipping my long run this week. Also have a long stretch of work nights ahead....5 out of the next 6.

Do any of you track how much sleep you get? Quality of sleep?

@ereck44 My Fitbit tracks my sleep and how restless I've been. It's sometimes handy to know (or be surprised by) how much rest I've had.

Are they taking you off the Prednisone because you're at your goal weight?

@Orphia The routine I do is a mash-up of a runner's sequence I found in a book and a few other poses that I've put together that have been working well for me so far. I'll post the sequence once I'm back from the dreadmill. It's too hot to run outside, and we finally have some rain this morning. I ended up with a bad case of nausea yesterday due to the heat/humidity, so staying in AC today as much as I can.

    @_nikkiwolf_ CUTE doggy!!! :smile:

@_nikkiwolf_ -- Too funny about your runs. What goes through the mind when out running and the negotiations with self.
@virkati - cute dog! I hadn't ever heard of that kind of dog, so I looked it up when you mentioned it the other day. I think he'll be a great running partner after not too long.

Two mornings in a row I have seen a falling star on my 4:30 run! It's been a couple years since I have seen one. They fall so fast if you don't happen to be facing that way and looking up, there's no way you'd see it. If I see some next week, I'm going to feel like Chicken Little - the sky is falling!

Anyway, it was a nice steady run today. Yeah, it's hot and humid, but I think I am finally used to it again. Not that I could do it in the sunlight. Lots of biking this weekend. Hopefully strength training this afternoon -- husband has car in shop so not sure if I can make it.

    8/1 - 5.1 miles
    8/2 - 4.6 miles with intervals
    8/3 - 4.6 miles + Strength Training
    8/4 - 5.67 miles
    8/5 - 5.1 miles + Strength Training
    8/6 - 43 miles biking
    8/7 - 30 miles biking
    8/8 - 3.1 miles
    8/9 - 18 miles biking
    8/10 - strength training
    8/11 - 5.2 miles
    8/12 - 5.3 miles

@orphia - here's a nice yoga video for runners. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hTllAb4XGg. She also has a warmup and cooldown sequence on her you tube channel. I love Yoga with Adriene.

Thanks so much for you wishes for my dog. She's doing better today. :)

Didn't get out to run yesterday due to toilet-related struggles (surely a running forum must me the only place on the internet you can chat about poop as if it's a completely normal thing to talk about? Anyway...) but my stomach seemed much better after some toast for breakfast this morning. I ran with a sports drink, which I wouldn't normally do for 6 miles, but I'm glad I did as I felt very thirsty and had to start drinking from mile 2. Clearly ended up a bit dehydrated as the result of spending my entire day yesterday on the toilet :flushed:

But anyway, I ran today to make up for it, even though today is usually a rest day. I'll slow my runs down over the weekend just so my body doesn't protest too much at running 3 days in a row for the first time, but it should be fine. Looking at my mileage to date, it doesn't look like I'm anywhere near being on track to make my goal but I actually am. I haven't missed a run yet this month so I'm still sticking to my training plan. There's a first time for everything!

@ddmom0811 That's awesome about seeing the stars!

@kristinegift, @9voice9, @5BeautifulDays and everyone else suffering with the heat - all your talk about heat has made me even more relieved that the 'heatwave' they were forecasting for the UK (which would still not have been nearly as extreme as what you guys run in) seems to have taken a turn and the hottest we will see is about 26C/79F instead. How you guys do it, I have no idea!

    1st-6th - Holiday
    7th - 5.22 miles
    9th - 3.06 miles
    12th - 6.51 miles

    MTD - 14.79/70 miles

    Upcoming races:
18th Sept - Run Reigate Half Marathon
2nd Oct - Tonbridge Half Marathon
30th Oct - River Thames Half Marathon
    9th April 2017 - Brighton Marathon

8/7.....yet another rest day, still sick :(
8/8.....walking & bike riding with Pandora

    Goal: 40 miles
8.69 miles done, 29.46 to go

I'm way behind on reading posts again, and going out of town for the weekend so I won't have a chance to catch up. So, good luck to anyone who's racing this weekend! High fives to all for your awesome efforts & hugs to those who are recovering from injuries (or anyone who just needs one!)

    Have a good weekend y'all!!

Not a happy run. Managed to get out early-ish, but almost 70% humidity makes for an UNHAPPY runner!

Today's notes – I'm calling it a daily double, but it felt like 4 separate runs today.
    ...
Average pace would have been 6:18 per mile on nominal distance, 6:11 per mile on Garmin distance. Garmin reported the temperature as 90º and the humidity was enough that the coaches were warning about dehydration and heatstroke before the trial started. (No incidents along those lines, fortunately.) Average heart rate was 153, max 162.
    ...
Reading the posts today has me thinking about the heart rate. Garmin claims my max heart rate is 185. I am 60 years old, so 220 - age puts my max at 160, and 217 - 85% of age puts it at 166. Running a short race like a 5K with my heart rate averaging in the low to mid 150s is no big deal; running at marathon pace in good weather, my heart rate will be in the low 140s. On long runs, I tend to gravitate toward a heart rate somewhere around 130 unless I'm artificially slow to stay with other runners. I don't think I understand where my heart rate ought to be well enough to train by heart rate, but I find it interesting to look at it after the fact and try to figure out what it's telling me.
Just. Day-yum. I'm in AWE, man!

I think I saw one this morning?! It's the time for the Perseids, so I'm guessing it was one of that cloud - but then again, it was just inside the "corner of my eye" so I can't be entirely sure that I even saw it. But I'm claiming it.

    I SEEN A FALLIN' STAR!

@ddmom0811 That would be the The annual Perseid meteor shower, best visible over North America in the early morning hours of Aug. 11 and 12, produces more shooting stars than any annual meteor shower, according to NASA.

For anyone thinking about doing some Trail Run I stumbled onto this link from MEC.

8/1 - Intended to run 4, but oversleeping and a thunderstorm kept it from happening :-(
8/2 - Bodypump class, followed by Abs/Core class. I may be too uncoordinated for this ab stuff...I feel like a bull in a china shop for sure.
8/3 - 4.11 miles. Cool but foggy/sticky. Felt like running through a shower.
8/4 - 5 miles on treadmill (Trek class). The Y was so humid, kinda felt like I was outside anyway.
    8/5 - Bodypump class.
8/6 - 6.33 miles with HM training group.
    8/7 - Rest Day.
    8/8 - 4.25 miles. Felt good!
8/9 - Unplanned rest day. Some annoying back pain kept me awake all night, so I "overslept" without actually getting any sleep.
    8/10 - 4.3 miles in 75°, 90% humidity...plus, owl.
8/11 - 4.95 miles on treadmill (Trek class). Then, some quick upper body weights. Again, humid.
8/12 - Spin Class...not sure I have ever sweat that much in my life

@katharmonic - Oh no! Sorry about your pup! As you know, we are a dog group that likes to run. Lotsa love for the canine companions. Hope she feels better and more comfortable soon. Way to sneak that run in!
    @Stoshew71 - Hmmm...apparently you've angered the MFP gods?
