What nobody tells you about losing weight

I've only lost 46lbs so not much, but so far:
Negative
- my mother in law is threatened by my loss and is telling me I'm about to fade away and to stop now (I'm still 90-100lbs overweight and morbidly obese!)
- no one at all can tell I have lost any weight. I have to tell them and they look surprised
- the baggy skin isn't on my stomach, it's all on my inner thighs and it looks terrible
Positive
- my skin looks glorious
- I get asked for ID when buying my husband some wine (I'm 32 and haven't been asked for many years)
- my boobs haven't shrunk much at all
- my period is morr regular
- walking makes me feel awesome rather than tired
- confidence when talking to others
- men in shops will smile and ask me how my day is going now
46 lbs is a lot and you're doing great. Just smile at your mother-in-law and don't respond, or just say 'Doctors orders'. My granddaughter lost about the same amount of weight you're striving for. She has kept it off through her last 3 pregnancies, looks great, and has the energy to be a great mother to 4 kids. Keep up the good work.

My shoulders are broad, and my wingspan is huge for a woman, so when my boobs and belly go down to a sensible size I find it impossible to buy feminine long sleeve tops, or most tops in woven fabric.
When I'm fatter, I still struggle, but with persistence, I can often find something, because the sleeve length and shoulder breadth goes up with larger dress sizes.
That must be discouraging but think of the health benefits can you afford to get some clothes made or join a class and learn to sew. Don't give up
I'm really pleased with my loss but because of my age 71 I have loose skin and hate my arms but hey I'm fitter and stronger than when in my Thirties Good luck6 -

Heh. well done on that! You probably notice your own loose skin more than anyone else will. I won't give up - I look better at a healthy weight, as well as feeling better. I am thinking of sewing myself a couple of tops when I reach goal.
I'm fine with T-shirts, and can shop judiciously in men's departments for pullovers, sweatshirts etc, but all my life, smarter and nicer tops and jackets have been an issue. I recently realised that they had become less of an issue when I was into the "overweight" bracket.
Tall women's shops don't help, because my trunk is hardly any longer than average, so the waist is too low and the tops are too long on my body. Also, I think their range is meh.
All my extra height is in my legs, and longer length trousers are easily available these days (they weren't when I was a teen). It's my swimmer's shoulders and gorilla arms that do the damage.3 -

Amen lol! I darn near feel stuffed when I eat and still not quite hitting calorie goals.
I see quite a lot of posts about eating low fat. I've seen several people reach plateaus and couldn't lose anymore until they added a little 'good' fat to their diet. I use olive oil to cook my egg in the morning and eat a tablespoon of peanut butter on toast occasionally. So if you get stuck give it a try and just add it into your calories for the day.2 -

- Clothes looking flattering on me again
- Going back to my skinnier clothes and feeling like I had a whole new wardrobe
- Sweating right away
- My husband couldn't keep his hands off me
- being thought of as anti-social at pot lucks because I just stayed away as I knew I couldn't resist the spread of yummy fatty foods
- Dreading going out to eat because I didn't meal prep it myself and really know what went into it
- Not cringing when it was photo time
- Seeing my cheekbones again
For me, I discovered that being treated nicer by everyone was more of a matter of my own self-confidence. I had thought that my family and friends loved my husband more and I was along for the ride. I had heard that if you act a certain way that's what you'll get back. So I decided to do an experiment for awhile. I acted like I thought everyone was glad to see me when I saw them. The change in my attitude was what allowed them show me they were glad to see me. Maybe you have new-found self confidence that allows everyone to treat you nicer now.22 -
How most guys notice you more, the more weight you lose. It happened when I lost weight before, and it's happening again lately. Ya'll guys are shallow. Sorry, but it's often true. LOL
I had to think about this. If the man is overweight too then, yes it is shallow. On the other hand if they take care of themselves and go to the trouble to stay in shape and be fit, then they have every right to want someone who is interested in being in shape and fit too. I feel I should make as much effort as they do to take care of myself.22 -

This may as well be the case, or you perceive people to be kinder because you are kinder to yourself, perhaps. I really haven't noticed any difference in the way people treat me to be honest, apart from my weight being a recurring subject now when back then it wasn't.5 -

Not a bad problem to have. It could be fun finding out. I have no advice for the bust but I do for the bottom. My grranddaughter never had much of a butt but she took up running, usually around 3-5 miles. One day I noticed she had a nice little round bottom now and she said it was from the running. (I am now running).4 -

But on a much more serious note, what shocked me the most about losing weight was...myself. I've heard that losing weight gives you confidence, but no one told me that weight loss would give me a whole new personality. Being overweight my ENTIRE life, I never realized how much my weight and insecurities affected my personality. I was hiding behind my weight my whole life and I never even knew it. Once the weight came off, the true me that had been hiding for years emerged. And she is radically different from the person I always thought I was! My pants size is down to 20 from 26.
My shirt size is down too.
Sweat shirts that were tightish last winter, are baggy as hell now.
Yet I feel bigger than ever.11 -
The icky feeling you get when you go off healthy eating and consume calorie- and fat-laden foods. That's what happened on my birthday. Hubby took me to our favorite Mexican restaurant, and I was looking forward to it all day! And I chowed down, believe me. Then we came home to cake and ice cream, which I had not had since his birthday, months before.
Afterwards, I felt SO SICK! Couldn't wait to eat good-for-you meals the next day.
The unbelievable satisfaction I feel after hitting the gym and lifting and doing cardio for about 2 hours. Exhausted but on such a high! I can't imagine ever going back to my old lifestyle.[/quote]
Exact same thing. However, it was a wake up call that it wasn't that hard to eat right and when I thought about eating more I didn't because I didn't want to make myself sick again.

Yes so true. When really heavy men talk to me i ask them what are their health goals. Most of them just give up easily. I explain that i want to be with someone who has goals to become healthier. Some understand, some get an attitude.8 -

This is me too. Those long sleeved fitted women's shirts are impossible for me, because they're always too small through the shoulders.2 -

Funny thing is i was plenty confident 65 pounds ago not sure why weight loss makes all these insecurities come out.
You have lost your Fat Armor, Love... you are exposed to the world. It takes some getting used to.
(Hugs!)
YES. sometimes i wonder why i keep sabotoging my wtloss moment. It's losing the fat armor. I don't want it but it's scary to lose it.
Breathe. Just bteathe, & let it go.7 -
Gallowmere1984 wrote: »Every single person would ask me what my secret was. I didn't have the heart to tell him it is just hard work and dedication.
So very true! My response is always 'Eat less, Move more'. They look at you like you're taking the p!ss. I think with all the media attention on fad diets people have become conditioned into thinking the only way you can lose weight is to pay over the top prices for some quick fix powder type thing that basically just does the same thing as CICO
I even leave out the "move more" part most of the time, as it's barely applicable to weight loss. Most of the actual deficit comes from caloric restriction, unless one is borderline athlete training. Granted, they still think I'm full of crap, but I've pulled my 1400 kcal/day logs out before, which was my caloric target when I cut from 195 to 150 in a few months.
The actual hard part is trying to convince them to accurately measure their damned food.
But yes the scales bit i by far the hardest bit to explain as they just look at you like your some kind of weirdo, weighing your food. I still have co workers look at me funny when I bring my lunches into work with my pre made snack packs thats all pre weighed and measured
That new coworkers tell me that I'm going to gain wt because i eat "too much". I exlpain that I've lost wt by calorie counting, & use MFP. It works. Eating 5 meals a day within my calories is not eating too much & it's doctors order. I only consume about 300 cal or less per meal.
That other heavy women at work ask me how I'm losing wt yet they assume calorie counting is too much work. I'm so accustomed to it & i know it works.14 -
This one hit me at the grocery store while shopping for our Thanksgiving Day foods.
I am comfortable existing.
I used to be very much a "get in and get out of other people's way" kind of person. I didn't realize that, for me, this mindset coincided with me not feeling like I had a right to be out in public anymore because I was heavier. Like I didn't deserve to exist in the world because I was big.
As soon as I realized it, I had to take a moment to not cry right there in the store.
I exist, and I deserve to exist, whether I'm a size 8 or a size 20. The same goes for everyone else!
ETA: One that I learned just now: You can be a year in maintaining at your goal weight, and things nobody tells you about losing weight will STILL pop out at you.59 -
When you see how much space is between your stomach and the steering wheel now.
***(this one is my pain)
When family members or people you know ask you "how you did it" and you tell them... you ate right and exercised... and they look at you like you're lying and want the exact map of what you did!!!
How living in an upstairs apartment isn't a pain anymore. Especially when you see the neighbors struggling to get up the stairs.
When you realize you park hella far in any parking lot now and look forward to the walk.
When your child (my daughter's 4)doesn't comment on your big bouncy belly anymore.21
